[Q] Music quality declined after updating to newest firmware - Legend General

I own a Legend that I bought in Singapore and it came shipped with the 1.31 or similar firmware. I was blown away by the music quality as it reproduced bass better than my iPod.
After upgrading to the newest firmware (2.03 & 2.05) that changed at its now pretty damn weak. All my base are belong to god-knows-who now.
Could anyone confirm this? Give your opinion on the music quality and your level of "impressed-ness" in the poll.
I've got some type of in-ear skull candy headphones so they should not be the issue as they've been solid with other music players.

I don't find the legend having any sort of bass in the first place actually. (default player)
If you are a bass lover, try powerAMP. It's equalizer really allows for loads of bass without distortion.

PowerAMP ? Gonna find out more about it, thanks. Default music player on any android version for my legend sucked balls hard actually. No bass what-so-ever. Had to use mixzing, which worked for a couple of months pretty good. But now it just refuses to work after everytime i pause music, and minimize it. That was just a offtopic.

Strange.. Did your Legends come with newer firmware or did you update? What's your current versions? I want to downgrade back to 1.31 to try it out and verify this but it seems too cumbersome. I am 100% sure about the decline however, the bass was amazing before.

I think you may be right about this. I'm using a pair of Sennheiser bluetooth headphones (MM-450 I think). I was amazed with them to start with but the last few weeks I have really noticed that the base is not as powerful as it once was. I was beginning to wonder whether the headphones were damaged.
It's hard to conclusively confirm this as a bug as it is quite subjective, hard to measure and not immediately noticeable. I am convinced that bass quality has reduced sometime since the last (shockingly awful) update. Lets hope the elusive Froyo update fixes this.

Yes i think you may be right... I'm using the SuperFroyo ROM and have noticed a big change in the quality of the music

Best custom equalizer settings?

hi guys, i use the stock music player and wanted to know if anybody knows a good setting for the custom equalizer... Now i use the Rock preset and Clear audio, but maybe i could get better sound.
So, anybody?

How can I make the equalizer and effects setting to remain the same, instead of it resetting every time i close the music player?
There is no "one size fits all" when it comes to EQ. It all depends on your personal preference, the type of music you listen to, and the headphones you are using. What sounds good to me may sound horrible to you (and vice-versa).

This is absolutely accurate. Hell, it could all come down into the difference in shape of your ear canals. Realistically, if you don't know, it's probably not worth messing with.
Anyone should appreciate a -3dB reduction in the 4K area.
Agreed heygrl. Though If you want a good eq, use mixzing. Much more powerful.

Honestly, get better earphones.
Equalizers can help with the cheapies that come with the phone or the <$50 garbage headphones that all come from the same factory in China, but the best results vary between genre or even track. If you don't want to have to mess with EQs to get good sound, you should probably invest at least $80-100 on good earphones if possible. That way you can listen to your music the way it was intended.
Just mess around with the preset ones and see what sounds best for you. Most "normal" users prefer a lot of bass, guess they think it sounds better. What you want is to get an even mix of highs, mids, and lows. But again you're the one listening to it so what ever you think sounds the best.

Oh please, spare us the nonsense on how we shouldn't have to mess with an EQ if we had "good" headphones so we can listen to music the "way it was intended" to be heard. I would like to get my hands on some lightly compressed alternative music so I can actually get a glimpse of what it sounded like before it was compressed to **** but we can't always get or do what we want. Music today is meant to be loud/harsh and not much else, and an EQ can work extremely well to tweak out harshness regardless of what you're listening with.

I personally didn't think beats was all that great but alot of users like it so i made this flashable version for my rom. Figure everyone else would enjoy it as well. It does replace some files though such as services.jar and framework.jar. I have only tested it with my rom but it should work with any rom but i suggest making a nandroid backup just in case.
This is the full beats with icons and eveything
Now with HotSpot working (Thanks Leoisright)
Sense Roms ONLY
Anyways just flash it in recovery and enjoy
Now has universal updater-script so it can be flashed on any device But probably will not work so try at your own risk !!
A few have reported that it flashes on other devices and it boots so it may just work on some.
This is developed for the Evo 3D it is on the portal and because of my title it says for ANY Sense rom but it was made for the 3d. but if you want to try it on other devices i strongly recommend a nandroid backup before testing. I'll be looking into the possibility of multiple devices soon. Sorry for the confusion..
If you are getting FC with Music try the FC-FIX and see if it works and post if it did or not. I am trying to figure out what the problem is

TB-beats fix (only flash if you are seeing fc's in music app
I'm currently running gingeritis 3D and Chingy ported this over in his ROM, now I hear a slight difference but i assume by HTC it was made to best be heard using beats earphones/headphones. Have you tried this and confirmed it working?
Yeah. most are saying its best used with Beats headphones. But those already have amplified bass. So I dunno if they are just thinking it works better or not.
I cant flash it on my phone (well not yet at least) the stock music player wont load on my. I broke it somehow. . I do however own a set of very nice headphones that are better audio quality than 'Beats' but cant test the new audio stuff yet... Would be nice to get a little deeper bass with stock music app (once I reflash a clean ROM)
What difference did you notice?

a very slight difference on stock ported gingeritis, but when time permits I'll make a backup and flash this and test it out. Hope someone has tried or is trying this and keep us informed, I also read from adrynalyne that 95% of the beats ports where fake so...I'm not sure if this on a software level or if this includes hardware.
Most people commenting in the original thread are saying they hear a difference. But it might be all in their head.
As far as trying this out, he stated this was is based off desire HD roms because of the sense 3.0. And Im pretty sure our roms are also based off the Desire HD rom for the sense 3.0. So theoretically it should work... but we all know how well those go... Hense all the warnings i put in the OP.
All it is is some compression and.altered eq...maybe a bit of gain....on a pair of studio monitors it.makes everything sound ****ty but for a pair of cheapo headphones it might have some benefit, I also noticed it accentuated audio clicks, glitches, things that overshadow the whole objective of the app/dsp in the first place.

Go to the software part, it tells you pretty much what "beats audio" does to the output. That being said, I have a pair of beats pro's and *maybe* noticed a tiny difference at the most. Most likely all this does is take the stock EQ and bump it up in certain places, if it actually does anything at all.
No go on synergy r267. Shows install went ok. Cleared davlik and cache.

that made me LOL. Beats optimized output device...? So... over priced headphones?
I tried the beat mod on chingys Gingeritis. It does slightly increase the mid bass. That was the most noticeable change, well besides the fact it also greatly increases the hi's so the sound doesn't become muddy. And as stated before you will definitely hear crackling on max volume.
I have played audio out both to my car stereo via head phone jack and to my headphones (definitely not cheapys, and better than any "optimized beats equipment") Its all the same noticeable difference. I haven't tried on my cheap ear buds yet, but will give them a good run tomorrow when I take my street bike out for a Sunday put put.
Using this mod does disable the stock EQ that is built into htc music app. or at least it did on my phone.
I will officially classify this mod as 80% hype and 20% function.
If you have anything professional you wont need to eq anything that was recorded and mastered properly. I promise.

Its not like I need more bass or high end out of a radiohead album, the Guy who's best at deciding the equal of everything already determined that. All of this post processing bull**** is just to make wank headphones sound "Fuller" "richer" but by no means more accurate, and to be honest a complete waste of CPU.

I wrote this on rootz, figured I would share it here too.
People seem to forget what beats are about. They don't make the music sound "better" they make it sound "clearer". You want "better" sounding music then yes, the others do a good job of that. But if you want to hear the music, how it sounds to artists in a studio, without extra filters, eq's, etc. put on by Bose, Sony, and the other manufacturers, then Beats are the way to go. I'm going to guess none of you have ever been inside a real studio (not your friend's basment with a mic and a padded wall, that isn't a studio) so you saying that beats don't do this, and are all marketing bs, don't really know what you are talking about.
I have had the Solos, sold them and got the Studio's, and sold them and now have the Pro's and I can say I have never heard music clearer before than I have with these. Want to know why the base sounds "deeper" or the treble is "louder" with other headphones? Because that's how they are made. Beats are made to sound exactly how the artist made the song in the studio and wanted people to hear it.
/endrant
I am an audio production major, my school has a multi million dollar studio and no one uses beats. AKG, SENNHEISER, AUDIO TECHNICA are the three major brands for lower end accurate audio reproduction. Truly "clear" headphones are electrostatic such as the ~$1000 stax in Japan, they require their own amp. I think its hillarious that you think beats (which have over accentuated lows and highs...to give compressed music come off of a ****ty audio driver (like the tbolt) a bigger richer sound? More accurate? Absolutely not recessed mids are guarunteed when you "eq" a set of headphones like beats chose to do. The most hillarious part is were in a discussion thread talking about a plugin that does that same eq/compression/gain bull**** and above poster is repping beats to be about accurate sound reproduction. You obviously know a lot less about audio than you pretend to....
Sent from my ADR6400L using Tapatalk
Not to mention with all of the money they put towards marketing, Justin bieber beats, p diddy beats, lady GaGa beats....its obvious that its directed at the commercial consumer market, NOT FOR THE AUDIOPHILE/PRODUCER. Go test a pair of ATH-M50s if you don't believe me...

Case and point, beats useless, if you really know how you want your music to sound use playerpro with dsp pack, if your getting cracking, then lower your preamp and get a better output. My brother works the sound board for the starland ballroom in nj, very big venue, and I'm assistant production manager. We have had everyone from Justin bieber to as I lay dying. Beats that you guys are using isn't even the true beats that comes with whatever phones its coming with these days. Do some research and you'll find that out
You should have killed me, when you had the chance
And what I mean by beats optimized is its set up to work best with the way beats headphones are set up...is that alittle easier to understand?

Aww. I thought this was a free pair of Beats Audio for Gingerbread users.
Darn it ... I've been waiting for this, but I'm on ICS
I would post in the original topic asking for help, but my posting privileges don't allow me yet so here it is. I tried flashing that zip using OpenRecovery on my Motorola Milestone with CM7, but I keep getting an error: Status 0 and then "Installation aborted". Can I only flash that using CWM, or is there something wrong with the files? I already renamed the zip to "update.zip" just in case.

In the original topic, someone already responded to this question: you first need to mount /system manually.
Turned off equalizer and tuning in Poweramp and listened before and after flashing this. Undoubtly a huge difference, at least I like it
Problem is its an equalizer with settings non changeable .
Does it make any difference ???
My tests 50% No 50% maybe .
But beauty is in the eye of the beholder and placebos can also work for some .
Nandroid backup install and try is all you can do as its not removable .
Further tests
Volume level is probably up by 1%.
Playback is the same as my current setup apart from a bit of distortion at the peak with louder sounds . A bit like standing next to the instrument rather than in the audience .

Holly f*ck, it works like hell with Voodoo LOUDER, Mixzing and the Eq on it and a AKG k518DJ
You don't have any icon, if you want, just check with RootExplorer "System/bin", you'll see some file like this "basimage_ibeats_isolo.bin"
So yes you can flash the zip with any GB (mine is Hyperdroid with Siyah)
---------- Post added at 05:29 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:46 PM ----------
If you have a good Eq AND you know how to set it, you'll not have more bass!
It feel like a filter, the bass is deeper, clearer, the med also and the trebble too
-> It really makes the sound clearer
It's makes a huuuge difference with a 320 Kbps mp3 or FLAC and a real headphone and with high quality earphone, and it's even better with voodoo LOUDER wich hacking the hardware of my phone
Who said for GB only?
I flashed it before my work was over, so I was able to directly hook it up to my car stereo. I am running AOKP (ICS 4.0.3 AOSP), so I didnt expect it to work.
So, I fired up PowerAMP and played right away. It wasnt much of a difference, since the PowerAMP EQ and Tone-Filter were still active. I know how it sounds without those 2 options, since I drive alot within the week and my Phone is hooked up to my car stereo like every time.
I listen to heavy tunes, bass-focused, mainly Dubstep and DnB.
So I switched those 2 options OFF within PowerAMP and WHOMP!
I mean, really! There is a pretty significant improvement in sound quality.
It sounds better than with activated EQ and Tone-Filter from PowerAMP.
Very crisp bass, but with more force and power.
Mid-Tones are clearer when heavy bass lines kick in.
I was like "WTF"...
Then I fired up Simfy (german edition of Spotify) and even there I got a significant improvement in sound.
I am pretty surprised, since I didnt think it would work on ICS since its been promoted for Gingerbread "Only". But I can say, there is a difference, and if not, I must be high on crack or something ....
PS: I even have the imagination it increases the default Volume Levels. I usually have a pretty fixed setup while driving and listening music (Volume Levels) and I really had the feeling that it was louder in general...
As I have said earlier, I guess supercurio confirms it on his twitter.

Reminds me of the SE Bravia nonsense that was floating around. This is why companies like Bose and Monster Cable make money hand-over-fist.
You're likely listening to 192 kbps (or less) MP3 files on a set of sub $20 headphones, no amount of compression/EQ can help that.
Improved the audio quality quite a bit. Specially on WIDE effect in settings. Crisp & more clear

[Q] Music volume is so low!!! Help?

So from November 2012 when I got my phone I have tried any thing came to my mind to solve this problem but nothing worked for me!!!
I'm very sensitive about music quality and I really can't stand this anymore!!! My volume is very low even when I crank it to the max!!! I mostly use my Dr Dre Studio headphones and sometimes my Beats Tours... I've tried several other headphones and didn't get any result
When I connect my Studio headphones to my laptop and I listen to the same track that I have on my phone it's super load like if I turn up the volume to the max I really go deaf!!! So I'm pretty sure it's not from my headphones... I know that the phone's amplifier is not as powerful as my laptop but still ... I think it is not normal, I also notice some other people have the same problem as me!!!
So these are the things I have tried already:
1. Using other mp3 player apps such as PlayerPro, PowerAMP, Winamp and .... none of them made any difference and the equalizer simply just mess up the quality of the track...
2. I have used all the mods like Beats Xlouder and such and they also just lowered the quality
3. All of my tracks are MP3 320kbps/flac audio format... still I tried to increase the audio using Audacity by amplifying the dB... It helped but not really noticeable.
Currently I don't have root access but if something can really help I'd be willing to root my device... like kernel or something! Please help

Google Nexus 4 Volume low you can probably see people having the same problem I you think I'm lying
If you think you can help please give me a solution to my problem...
Imma be as descriptive as possible with my fix.
ROOT YOUR PHONE!
1. Install Trinity kernel. (Its the only kernel I've gotten this to work with)
2. Flash Misledz audio mod, keep up with the latest ones as in my opinion she really knows what she's doing and the quality gets better and better.
3. Once the mod is installed Titanium Backup / Rom Toolbox remove the 4 system apps installed by Misledz audio mod.
-Awesome beats, -Noozy Player, -Noozxoide, -Dolby Digital App.
4. Reboot wipe cache / dalvik in recovery, reboot.
5. Go to the market and download the latest Noozxoide, set up to your musical preference.
Now you can omit some parts such as keeping 3 of the apps, but I find awesome beats not to work at all, the libs in the mod does though. That's why I remove the apps. I listen to a lot of bass heavy music (rap / old school hip-hop). This method is a night and day difference in loudness and audio quality.
I genuinely hope this helps everyone.:good:
dude Awesome beats is the worst ... plus I'm not rooted any more
but I heard there is a kernel that increases the volume
Not awesome beats. Misleadz audio mod. Trinity kernel makes your audio louder naturally. With the audio mod trust me you'd give me an e-hug in gratitude (no homo). I had the same problem. This method I posted works.

* What music player app do you like the most on your Atrix?
* What audio format do you listen to normally (MP3, FLAC) with it?
* What apps make your music sound better on the Moto Atrix?
* What rom makes the audio sound the best for you?
* What music sounds the best on your Atrix?
To keep this thread in this subforum however, and not the General Android Discussion section,
I ask that you only provide answers to these questions regarding the Atrix, and make that known.
This is not a "I love this artist!" or "I don't think you know very much about music." thread.
Please keep replies to a minimum, so that this does not get flooded with flamers or Nazi's (no offense meant...sorry if I offended).
Everyone has their opinion, and they have the right to defend it, but they don't have the right to attack with it.
Be mature. Pushing opinions on others will get you nowhere. Opinions are opinions, not facts.
Without further ado, let's get started.
And I will start with the main reason audio sounds generally better with your Atrix.
The reason your Atrix sounds so good is... (dun dun duuuuuh...badum ch!!)
The Atrix 4G has a dedicated audio chip in it! =3 It's a medium-low end Wolfson chip.
Hard to find the info for it, but I wanted to know what made PowerAMP with FLAC
sound so good compared to an iPhone with ALAC. (both with equalizer off, charger port on iPhone -> Audio jack/headphones)
If you do some digging, you'll find this to be true.
I'm going to miss my Atrix when it becomes time to move on to another phone
I have my eyes set on the HTC One X+ or the Samsung Galaxy S4,
depending on what my budget is when the time comes.

Cool. I haven''t heard of XenoAMP. I'll check it out.
I guess I can answer the questions with my answers. Also, future readers, please don't think that you have to use these questions, specifically. This is a discussion thread! It's not just a poll!
1: I've used PowerAMP since I got into FLAC. For me, nothing has beaten the audio quality and ranges I can get out of PowerAMP.
2: I guess I answered this in #1 and my OP. I love and always will use FLAC. With that said, the best way to do this is to purchase the CDs yourself! To be honest, most local CDs are the same price, or even less expensive, than iTunes or other markets (Import albums, of course, cost more usually). Not only that, but you get upwards 10x the quality! How can you beat that? Seriously, try sticking an official CD (not burned from iTunes) in your car radio, if you have one, and hear the difference for yourself!
Of course, I understand that MP3's are way smaller, and going along with what andresrivas said, not everyone has a 16+GB SD card. xD
3: I will say that when I used to use GB, and I was testing out audio, I didn't feel like spending time working on PowerAMP's 10-band equalizer. It was just too much. So, I looked into other apps, and found that Equalizer helped to make things sound better, using its 5 band equalizer and many presets that I actually used to use. Check it out if you're looking for a better equalizer for your entire phone! (I'm guessing XenoAMP does something similar?)
4: Actually, recently I trying CM9 out (krystianp's version with the 3.1.10 kernel), and my phone sounded better than I heard it immediately upon restoring my PowerAMP app+data through TiBu (Titanium Backup) Pro. It was amazing, and I hadn't even changed the usual preset's settings that I used. For some reason, CM10.1 by Epinter doesn't sound as good though, which saddens me...
5: Drum & Bass. The phone and the audio systems I regularly use are able to really pick up those residual base backgrounds along with the short, punchy beats up front. Also, Hifana's albums sound amazing! You can check one of their songs out here, if you're interested. I linked to track 12 because it's awesome and shows you their style, but you will need to sign in to listen. I highly recommend this site for listening, because it's much higher quality than Youtube (almost lossless, it feels like), and they have a lot of albums available for free listening...
If you want more of Hifana, listen to that whole album, and then check out their Channel H album. All of their music is good, in my opinion.

Sorry to hear about that.
You should try searching the forums, something like "Atrix 4G no sound" or "Atrix 4G sound issue". Adding your rom name or searching "stock" in addition to those might help if they apply to you.
I realize that you're just commenting on your situation (and not asking for support). Thanks for this.
If you're on stock, I can't help you much anyways. I haven't used stock Atrix in 2 years. I would search first, as per XDA rules/requests (plus it's just being courteous), then ask in the Atrix Q & A section of the forum. Perhaps a rom reinstall might help? (You can Factory Reset without rooting/unlocking bootloader)
Make sure to read instructions in the General threads, and of course the Beginners' Guide. They might help as well.
Just thought I'd try to help
(For future readers) This is in the general section, so support questions don't apply here. I'd also prefer not to have support question clutter. (I know you weren't exactly doing so, crack.mech )

Thanks for the suggestions Drakonas. I have been flashing different ROMs for a while now, and it doesn't seem to help. Though I hear some sort of crackling noise through the headset when I turn up the volume to full while playing music. As per my (re)search this seems to be a flex cable issue, but seems a bit wierd, as the speaker is not connected via flex cable ( I have opened up my atrix a few times!1 ). So I seriously doubt replacing the flex cable would help. But except for the audio issues, my atrix is still going strong, all thanks to the great developer community here.
And, I am seriously sorry to hijack this thread. Please accept my apologies.

Did you try to connect your atrix through an external portable amplifier? This may help.

1. Yep... I like it too.
2. Hey, whatever suits your preference.
3. Yeah, with some tweaking of it, you can get good sound. (This is from/for CyanogenMod roms for those who don't know) If I'm listening to music with PowerAMP, though, I don't like DSP Manager on. It's my preference, since I've customized PowerAMP's 10-band equalizer myself, vs DSP Manager's 5-band equalizer. Running 10-band through 5-band can defeat the purpose of the 10-band, but it depends I suppose.
4. Love CyanogenMod! Are you using a popular rom, by chance? I don't have the knowledge to customize a rom yet, so I usually just use one of the pre-built roms out there. My favorite for CM7 on the Atrix was Neutrino, but I changed to Atrix-MROM because it had the same battery-life and even better performance for me. Plus, the developer knows more what he's doing. He's part of the new 4.0 Kernel Project team.
5. I don't really listen to heavy metal, not anymore at least. I guess I grew up around teens that listened to it and thought it was the most amazing thing ever. (plus they often didn't care to try any other music. This probably differs you from them, hopefully ) I soon learned that there are thousands and possibly millions of styles of music out there, and there's more around every doorstep. I've spent the last 5 years building my music tastes, and I've switched favorite genres about 20 times, until I found the underground 20-year-old Drum & Bass scene.
But to each their own. Any specific artists that you like? I used to listen to DragonForce a lot, but I guess that's more Power Metal than Heavy Metal.

1. Hey, saving music in the cloud can be really useful. I guess the only reason I wouldn't want to is (A) I prefer FLAC which isn't usually provided and (B) I don't have a data plan currently, so playing on the go would be impossible. I have a lot of space anyways... I suppose you have a phone without much space to hold music?
2. Again, space. Plus I suppose it's the best format to use with Play Music.
3. Yeah, DSP really helps with MP3. I agree. I will say that if you get better headphones, you'll get better bass and clarity. I recommend some $10 to $20 Koss in-ear headphones for the lowest price, if you're not the person to have money laying around. Off-brand are usually crap, like Skullcandy. And for goodness sakes, if you want high-end headphones don't buy Beats by Dr. Dre. It is well known that they are overpriced pieces of crap compared to what you could get for half (or even less) of the price. Get some Audio-Technica Over-the-ears if you have that kind of money.
4. I love MROM. Best CM7 for Atrix in my opinion.
5. Nice! Make sure you check out Autechre and Flying Lotus, if you haven't already!

Iron Maiden, Chrome Division, Черный обелиск and little Ария. I also listen other genre of rock and metal . List all my favorite groups take much time, so i attached screenshot
Sorry for my bad English
How about adding links to all music enhancers... i.e. dsp manager, beats, voodoo or what ever else they have for Atrix... And I know voodoo is not for Atrix...
Sent 4rm My O.G. Atrix on it's Lapdock using Weptop+... Which let me add is so Extra F***ing Beast... Galaxy S4 can't touch this...
Atrix MROM with Shure E4c
Nice to know there are still Atrix fans. I am addicted to the sound quality delivered by Moto Atrix since 2011. Now I have three of it (one 2.3.4 as mobile, one MROM with minor touch screen defect as music player and one brand new as spare).
music app -> DoomPlay (it plays additional ALAC, 24bit96 WAV, BUT play mp3 may distort);
audio format -> mainly 16_44 WAV, some ALAC;
app sound better -> DSP manager with enabled bass boost set moderate, enabled equaliser set acoustic;
rom sound best -> MROM with DSP manager
best music sounds -> M.J., The Carpenters, Korea OST like ht tps://m.youtube.com/watch?v=6n5Ho9n9OPM
Moto Atrix drives my shure E4c earphone pretty well. No portable amplifier required.
Instead of MROM, I find the music sound seems a bit better from my Atrix 2.2.2.
I can feel the pure silence, position is more accurate and more crisp clear.
