A friend of mine and me are trying to find a solution to disable Data Roaming for Virtual Network Providers (VNP). Here in Austria we have only 4 real mobile phone providers while we have a lot more virtual ones.
For example we have BOB which is a virtual network using A1 Mobilkom. To get a working data connection data roaming has to be enabled.
We think that we found a solution but we need to prove it.
You could help us if you post the result of:
Code:
adb shell getprop gsm.sim.operator.alpha
This is only for people who have data roaming enabled to get a data connection with their mobile network.
Please post like this:
Code:
Provider: your_provider_name_here
Value of gsm.sim.operator.alpha: <value> or <empty>
If the value is empty (no string) post <empty>.
Thanks!

Hey there folks.
I'm going away to australia tomorrow and don't want to pay £7.50 a mb!
I think I have managed to disable the data connection by going into the settings:
Menu> Settings> Wireless Controls> Mobile Networks> Access Point names
And then geting rid of all except the T-mobile UK settings and then renaming the APN to general.t-mobile.uks (just added an "s").
The little data arrows have dissapeared from the top of the screen and nothing internet based is working but I can still send MMS and connect to and use wifi!!
Anyone else want to try this and confirm that it does actually totally disable the data connection?
Thanks
its very easy, change the name of you APN server, if you do it the phone can't stablish a data connection and force the data connection to 3G.
The phone dont use more the 2g or 3g.
If you want to do it better maybe you need to configure any iptables for deny connections or something
I agree. Easiest way to be to change the APN so it can't be used.
Not sure to what extent this would apply to you as you're apparently from the UK, but this is not good news for traveling abroad w/the G1, at least if you're from the states :/

It's been tested and proven that disabling the APN (e..g by misconfiguring it as the 2nd poster has mentioned) would prevent any data consumption, period. If you have an understanding of how telco network systems work, you would understand as well that this is not specific to any telecoms service provider -- if the data APN is incorrect, it simply cannot authenticate against the home data network, and hence data would not work. If roaming, incorrect login credentials would prevent the SIM from logging onto the roaming partner's data network and thus data service is unavailable.
if you download droidsan tweak lite, you can try to activate various apns until you see no 3g or 2g icon then you know you aren't receiving data
let me know how it goes!

Could very well be; I'm not versed in wireless tech enough to argue one way or the other. Someone in that thread specifically said changing the APN did not work for them however. Whether that's because they did it incorrectly or something else entirely, I have no idea.
From the thread I linked to:
by patuf4e
Actually I tried to change my APN settings to something incorrect. However, the phone keeps connecting to internet, apprently using some internally stored configuration by the time I initially synchronized with my google account. Is anybody experiencing the same?

Does anyone know the GPRS/EDGE settings for Aircel for the HTC P3400? Their customer care is useless.....
Aircel GPRS Settings
Go to start>>Settings>>connections>>add a new modem connection
Now Enter name of the connection aircelgprs
select a modem cellular Line (GPRS)
Now click next and type aircelgprs wherever asked
thats it
it works
Well sometimes that doesnt work you could also try this
Start => Settings=> Connections=>
connection name: Aircel Online
select a modem: Cellular line GPRS
Access point name: aircelgprs
Remember alphabets are case sensitive.
OK, so can anybody give me GPRS/EDGE settings for Vodafone, India ?
I called the customer care but they don't know a thing.
So, if anybody knows then do share.
Thanks

Vodafone has two services, Live and Mobile Connect. Which one are you talking about?
For Vodafone Connect:
Provide www as the access point.
For Vodafone Live:
Read this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=390035
I think the access point name for aircel gprs is "aircelgprs.po" for post paid and "aircelgprs.pr" for prepaid. correct me if i am wrong. Restart your phone after configuring the connection.
I got same problem doing this also no internet conn.
error is cannot connect with current settings.
APN aircelweb, send PI to 121 first.
I am not sure if my setup is causing this issue or not.
I have a US Dell AT&T unit running with an iPad unlimited data plan SIM card,
I have an APN configured with "Broadband" as the cingular APN's dont seem to work
with the iPad data plan.
It seems that the 3G data connection seems to drop randomly and I have to go into Mobile Networks and change the apn from and back to the Broadband entry to kick 3G back on.
I also have an issue where I go into any APP that uses GPS i.e Google Maps and it instantly kills 3G when the GPS kicks on. I can get it to do this every time.
I think it may be more related to the iPad SIM than anything, but I dont have a 3G SIM with a standard plan and voice.
I also have had major issues with the Rebel Sim II v1.1 and TMobile where EDGE data works for about 20 min and then never works again.
Anyone else see anything like this?
Also wondering if I have a defective Streak.
G
unlocked dell UK with 2.1 MCR, same problem.
I also initially thought the gps was the matter, but with Radardroid I don't have any issue. Also if I switch-on the gps from any widgets..
The connection shutdown with GOOGLE MAP
When i put my simcard (TIM italy) on streak, it set the apn for GPRS, WAP and MMS
I always use gprs and I have a limited (3G/month) flat-plan (in italy don't exist a full flat mobile connection!).
I don't have a plan for wap connection, because I do not use more than ten years!!
For me it is not the first time that I lose $$$ using involuntarily the (very old) wap connection, because some app call this connection. And it has always happened configuring gmail or using google map.
So I think that these google apps try to switch to using another connection with different apn
I tweaked my wap apn with a fake address.
So when i launch googlemap, it try to switch to wap connection but it fails due the fake address; I save my $$$, but I lose the umts/hsdpa and need a reconnection.
Maybe at the same on your dell, the app don't find the apn e lose the connection
Sorry for my bad English, but I think I've given you some good clues
Same exact setup (pad data sim) and same problem. Using 2.1 and beta unit.
Sent from my Dell Streak using XDA App
Hi,
make sure you had checked "supl" of APN type in your new APN profile.
The SUPL (AGPS) protocol was trying to work.
YESS! your advice was very helpful and I have solved my problem. Now googlemaps no longer shutdown the 3G connection
Thank you very much
That also worked for me, Brilliant! Thanks so much.
Think this was my main issue with the Rebel Sim too, going to try my TMobile SIM later.

I've placed my iPhone 4 SIM in the device and I can use the phone (calling) all I want but the data does not function correctly. I've used the default APN information and also made my own:
ATT Wireless
APN: wap.cingular
user: [email protected]
pass: CINGULAR1
MCC: 310
MNC: 410
I've also tried my iPad SIM. The data will work a for a few moments and then stop responding. I keep the AT&T network identifier and the (H) network indicator the entire time. When the data is not working, the arrows fluctuate back and forth but I alway receive a timeout message or a data failure error. Any one have any suggestions? I had AT&T reprovision my iPhone 4 SIM with the standard unlimited smartphone data plan but it did not help.
Thanks.
I was able to get my iPad sim working by adding a new APN with the name "Broadband"
This worked without any issues on my streak.

Hi all,
I have booked a data package for data roaming but the SGS3 (i9300MBDDBT XXLE8) won't connect. (germany -> france)
Data roaming is enabled of course, but all I get is the warning message, that data roaming has been disabled.
I have found very little information about this problem, only that some SGS2 or HTC Sensation users have been complaining about data roaming not working anymore after updating to ICS (from GB).
Is this an android bug of some sort or is anyone familiar with this problem?
BR
I have contacted my network provider, they had the gprs-roaming locked down for my contract for some reason...
Have you tried entering the network settings that you are roaming on to .
jje
Yeah, I guess the APN is set right to "web.vodafone.de", as it is stated in the service portal of my provider.
Althought I have read, that someone with a different provider had a similar problem and solved it by changing the APN...
I was just wondering, because the system tells me, that data roaming has been disabled, even if I have it enabled.
Try to manually search for some other network in France, maybe the one you are on right now does not offer data roaming (although I think all networks in the EU must offer it).
I can only connect to the "F SFR discoTel" network.
Since my home-network is discoTel (germany/vodafone network)
I guess this is their french partner network...
I have already contacted my provider via their service portal about this matter,
but they are quite slow and I think this problem might be connected to ICS, because all I can find about android not allowing data roaming on google is mentioning ICS.
Hi! I have a problem with roaming, in particular with mobile data roaming.
Is there a way to whitelist or blacklist operators for roaming? I live a the bordes of Italy and France and I would like to avoid my phone to connect to certains french operators, this is because there are commercial partnership between my home operator and some foreign network and I want to use data mobile on certains foreign network but not on some other that are very expensive.
It will be ok to just disable Mobile Data when on certain networks or at worst to deny the roaming.
I am not rooted. I remember that at the time of old GSM mobile there was a preference list regarding roaming network, and now that we have phone that can make almost everything a lot of important feature are missing!
Any suggestion?
Many thanks!
