SD card junk - Droid Incredible General

my 6gb card is totally clogged with junk, from TI backups rom backups, and random other fluff from my old bb (i never really sorted the media / wiped the card clean when I switched phones)
I backed up my sd card on my comp, to be safe. what do i absolutely NEED to keep on the sd card, or can I just format it, wiping it clean and then add what I want back?
i'm running sr vanilla with kk #4 bfs

You answered your own question in your last sentence. Wipe the SD card clean, format it (FAT 32) and add back what you need/want.
Keep the Nandroid(s) you may want to restore, the TB & media items you want to keep, and enjoy all the space.
Keep a full copy of everything on the PC in the event you want/need it later - ie make a copy of the copy of the SD card for safety.

Installing applications on SD card instead of main memory

Everytime I install new program to HD2 it asks me if I want to install into main memory or SD card. My PC windows experience says that it is advisable to install programs to main drive (C: usually). Does the same logic apply to WM devices? Or is it safe to install apps into SD card (which would leave more space on actual device)
It's really up to you where you install them. The only things to bear in mind are that the internal storage cannot be expanded, and you can remove the storage card.
The way I do this is to install anything that I think I'll really want to always have at hand on the device (essential apps like coreplayer, nitrogen etc..) That way, if I remove the storage card then my device still has my most favoured apps on it. Anything that I'm not too fussed about (games in my case) goes on the storage card.
It's your call completely, but there's absolutely nothing wrong with installing things on the storage card. In fact, I'd recommend doing it when you're installing non-essential apps so that you save internal storage for things that you don't have a choice with (MarketPlace apps, for example, or tweaks and mods).
Hope this helps mate.
ok, thanks for detailed reply. I will try to install apps to SD card, if that option becomes available during installation process. I am not switching SD cards, so it should be fine then.
one more question that is related to the first one... If I install application on SD card, then if I take the memory card out, put new ROM into phone and insert SD card back. Will applications run as before installing new ROM? Are all program files saved to SD card when installing or does it do some registry entries or save some files onto maine phone memory???
In my old JasJam I found that programs loaded faster when stored on the device storage as opposed to the SD card.
Is this the same on the HD2?
If you upgrade ROM then you will need to do a backup first then restore afterwards otherwise you will lose everything including the links to the programs on the SD Card (although the programs will still be there).
I use SPB backup to do this. It works well. I used it yesterday after I upgraded my O2 V1.43 ROM to HTC 1.66. The restore worked great
All Micro D cards aren't the same I paid a bit more and got a Class 6(fastest) 16GB card. Class 2 is the slowest.
I hope this helps?
Things to remember
SD card usage eats battery.
SD card usage is slower than phone mem.
SD card usage can cause conflicts and freezes.
SD card usage creates app associations that really should not be carried over to new ROM flashes.
Installation to phone mem gives smoother and more stable operation of phone.
You have plenty of on phone storage space so why not use it?
Links to apps gone
i have loads of applications on my SD card for my HD2 but when i reset it i lost all the links to them so now the only way to get to them is to go to the file explorer but i dont have any icons anywhere else on my phone, any suggestions?
Either reinstall the apps, or simply browse to the executables, copy, and paste as shortcut in \windows\start menu.

Bought a new SD card (how do I copy everything intact)

Hey, I just got a new larger and faster microSD card for my phone. I tried just doing a straight copy of the data from one card to the other, but it doesn't work. How do I do a copy that works like the old one does and keep my Fresh ROM intact as well?
couple ways of doing this...
#1. If you do NOT use a2sd
just mount your old sdcard to your computer and copy all the stuff into a folder on your desktop or something.
Then unmount the sdcard on your phone, replace with newer one, move everything back
#2. if you DO use a2sd heres what you do, or im guessing
First star on #1
Boot up into recovery and make a nandroid + ext backup.
Replace sdcard with newer one then partition it like you did to your older card
Move the nand backup you just made onto your new card
Nandroid restore it, then move all your other data onto your card

[Q] data.img

I tried to do a backup of the sd card and I think I may have taken the card out whilst android was still running. When copying the stuff from the sd card, data.img would not copy, some error. Now when booting in Android it gets stuck on the circle boot screen. I would guess that the data.img got corrupted. What happens if I just deleted it, would android create a new one when booting? I am using android on sd card Core droid with 1GB data image. Will I lose settings/programs?
unfortunately you will lose your data. next time instead of taking off your card use usb transfer.
SHould I delete it and Android will recreate one?
delete all the files related to the rom. the best format the sd card.then put a new sd rom and flash from beginning. the rom will create a new data.img.if you arent using titanium backup (from the market) i recommend you to use it in the future for similar cases to this.
format your card and do a clean intall

Partitioning SD card. Need a little advice.

Hey kids. I've just flashed to CM7 and i figure now is as good a time as any to FINALLY partition my SD card and use it like i should. Problem is, i've been moving apps to the SD card for months. No doubt there are remnants of app installations from prior ROMS. How do i go about cleaning out the dead weight before i backup the card and partition it?
You can backup your SD Card the reformat it with Windows in a card reader, put it back and partition it, boot up and the required files will write themselves, then move the stuff you KNOW you need back to the SD Card. Flash a new ROM or A2SD and you should be set

Cloned SD card with data2sd failed to mount, ROM back to reset state, any workarounds

Here is what happened:
The SD card is with two extensions - fat32 and ext4, ROM uses data2SD
1. Bought a new class 6 8gb card.
2. Cloned my old 8GB with dd - image was OK
3. New copy failed to clone properly, ext partition was corrupt....
4. Upon reboot of the phone with the new card, the phone entered bootloop, so I had to re-do the dd restore process again. Sadly, upon next start the phone was in almost clean state (all apps gone) I have no relevant Titanium back-up.
My question is : can I restore these apps ( I need to get back to some saves f cheese tower, nothing fancy ). The old SDcard is in the state it used to be in the phone. Any way to force the phone to "re-install" the missing apps ( since all apps are on SD, /data anyway...
I solved the problem - mounted the old SD card. The ROM fell back to the old state, so I made a Titanium Backup, copied the Titanium Backup folder to the new SD card . Then switched Sd cards again and restored apps I needed, alongside with data
