why i bought my g2 - G2 and Desire Z General

i bought my g2 because i was sick of being on 1.6 with my g1 and i was due for a phone upgrade. i really wanted a nexus one, strictly because i wanted new android updates asap. then i found out the g2 had vanilla android, there was hspa+ in my area and a physical keyboard. whew i was sold
now im wondering....
without the ablilty to root does this mean the g2 cannot be upgraded? will it allow real updates to be written or will it jump back to 2.2?
i was under the impression that having vanilla android meant we get all the updates asap.

If you are asking if HTC can update the phone through OTA, the answer is yes, HTC will have Super User access and the key to open NAND.

sweet, yes that was what i asked.

Waiting for the official 2.1 rom almost drive me crazy!

lots of apps can not run on the 1.5 rom,1.6 rom does not support HSDPA well, meanwhile there is no such official annoucement can confirm whether the magic will be updated to 2.1 or hell not!!!
what the ...!!!
Rogers has long time ago told that their 32A is going to get the 2.1 treatment by mid-summer, and that should quickly give all other rootede 32A an B's the same

Means if Rogers keep his words, it will be only two months to wait? But how can that happen? HTC always tell us that have no plan to upgrade the magic...

Link me to where you see that. I've never heard of that. If it's assumptions, then stop it.

Straight from HTC
@xyq105113: Please get your facts straight and your charm polished.
First of all: if you never been promised a 2.1 update for your magic i don't see what this complain is about. What will be next? That you want the 3.0 as soon as that will be released. You can't expect that old hardware will support or get updated software just be happy if you do.
Another thing is: welcome to xda developers who actually makes this update possible for you already unless you got an unhacked spl. If that's your problem then maybe a little research before buying or updating official software would have been a good idea.
My guess is that since HTC already announced update for the Hero and for the Rogers magic it will most probably come to all non-google branded magics.
But again i don't get why everyone got that attitude cause they haven't got any updates for their older mobiles.
There is several reasons for not giving updates to everyone.
1) More sales.
2) Less work making new drivers
3) Less support cases cause of people who can't figure out how to update.
4) Less phone replaced cause of people ****ing up under update.
5) Did i mention more sales ?

thank u for explaining, but there are still several bugs in those roms, right?
Plus since magic been published did htc ever update our magic once? Even Tatto have its 1.6 sense UI rom, why not update our magic, due to magic is still for sell, it seems no reason not to update magic. What I want is just a official 2.1 rom for my magic after this long time since 2.1 been published.
P.S. I do not consider my magic as a too old hardware to be updated, my BB 8320 still get new roms........

Many countries got an update for their magic just not an android update but update with Sense and Android market for those without. Think we all would love an official update with the new Sense and Android 2.1 for easy rom cooking to Magic. But i would think twice before updating the RUU if it comes, cause it might be impossible for root it for a while after if it will ever be possible after that update. I wouldn't consider it old yet either and hoping for the update as well. But i'm just happy that i got xda where i can get most of the things i need. But the mobile industry is moving really fast at the moment and i think that HTC decided to put focus on getting market share instead of pleasing their existing customers. Then we can discuss what the smartest move is in this case, but somehow i think HTC know what they are doing at the moment. But again i actually think that non-google branded HTC magics might get the update now that its official that Hero and Rogers magic does, cause with that done it wont require much work to release it for the rest of us.
But maybe they wont cause of the reasons i mentioned last post for not giving us the update. For now we can only hope, and enjoy the work the developers does for us to make it possible to have a good and stable HTC sense rom running Android 2.1
http://androidandme.com/2010/01/phones/t-mobile-mytouch-3g-users-to-get-android-2-1-this-spring/ look at this
as long as i'm using 32a, regardless of any carrier, will i be able to use that official rom on any htc magic 32a?

All US android phones to receive android 2.1.
HSPA has nothing to do with ROM version. It's a setting in build.prop. I have HSDPA and HSUPA working on Donut, as do many other people. It's on by default in CyanogenMod and probably some others.
Look in this thread for how: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=595108
are we another day closer to 2.1?

I just finished reading that and saw this.
Here is my question: Is this ROM Android 2.0/1, or is this just a new look/options for 1.6?
Its 2.1 but international magic didnt get any update :' (
Dont worry... When T-Mobile released android 1.6 for MT 3G it was ported to HTC Magic 32a VERY fast..
And the ported versions even run better on 32a.... Just go ahead and try Amon_Ra's 1.6.3 rom for 32a Magics....
I'm very sure 2.1 Epresso will be poted to 32a too...
Tmonews, Tech(something?) and androidandme have posted this "story" now.
My guess is its actually TURE?
is this for both the original mt3g and mt3g 1.2, or just 1.2?
I dont want sense tho

You have to manual tell it to preform the update, so just ignore it....if it comes out

but the million dollar question is which mytouch will get it the 1.2 mytouch or 1.0 mytouch i know the article said all first generation mytouches will get it so it would lead one to assume that the 1.0 version will get it but who knows

ding ding if i had a million dollars you would win it lol. cant wait for it!!
I would be very surprised if the original myTouch (aka 32B) got SenseUI, since XDA devs have been trying for over a year to get it to run well with not enough ram ... stock roms do not use swap or compcache so if this is true then they must have something very clever up their sleve. If it is true I will definitely give it a go, SenseUI is great but so far every "Hero" rom I have tried has not had working bluetooth.

I would love to know exactly what timeframe he had in mind when hhe refered to it a "soon". That is a very relative term, and not knowing what he was thinking in relation too coud leave this anywhere from hours to years... :hs:
I'd like to at least try this out when it comes, but will it be easy to re-root and install CFW again after the update? They wouldn't try to block hacking with this update (like they do with iphone updates), right?

I would bet that they would try to prevent you from rooting after the update, but that's just me. I can't wait for this, though as someone mentioned before, not sure how it is going to work on 32B phones. I'm just praying that first generation mytouch devices doesn't mean the mytouch 1.2 (which may still be considered first gen after the slide comes out). At the very least, it will be interesting to see how it pans out.
As of this announcement, ALL Magics (32b, 32a, 32a 1.2) will be getting this update. When it does come...
DO NOT APPLY THE OTA UPDATE
Just ...wait... for the *proper* version to be released here on XDA and you don't have to risk unrooting your phone.
And yet again no news from Vodafone about their Magic. Let's hope this means good news for Vodafone Magic users.
Vodafone might get 2.1, but it wont be the same Espresso update, since it is custom made by T-Mobiles Devs...

Buying an EVO

I've strongly been considering buying an EVO but a few things concern me:
With the hero it was rather hard to root/get a custom rom going, I really want a stock or rooted version of Froyo on EVO to take advantage of free hotspotting and other features. It seems that there is a push to get a froyo rom going but I have no idea.
The nexus one seems to have a ton of support but less features. I'd rather not get a nexus one but it gets stock everything and the mod support seems to be a bit better.
Any ideas on what to do? Should I be patient and wait for the support for the EVO to come in? Is there a big push to get stock/root/modded version of froyo going on the EVO? What to do xda?
Wait for the Evo. As soon as it's released to the public, there will be a HUGE push for getting it rooted and customized. This is HTC's best phone to date, so there's no way the entire XDA community is just going to ignore it.
thats what I'm thinking. As soon as I watched the I/O conference though I fell in love with Froyo. I wanna avoid the 30 dollar hotspot premium as much as possible and when I saw it was gonna be in Froyo without having to go through a carrier I was ecstatic. I sure hope there's a push for it.
They're already working on rooting the EVO. It is supposed to get an official Froyo update in July, but it will most likely be rooted by then.

I see, well the only problem with the official froyo update is that sprint will most likely take out the built in hotspot capability in place of their own.

G1 2.0 update

Does anyone believe that the G1 will get an official 2.0 update at all for stock ROM users??
google has already said that the G1 will not get anything higher than 1.6 officially. If you want 2.1/2.2 on the G1, you have to root and do it yourself.
Yeah.. defiantly not we got told to pull our g1 stock off the shelves last weeks and we're no longer selling it... so guess it's Cyanogen time for you.
People, people, people...
Google has officially stated that Android 2.2 will support the Google ION. This basically means full support for the G1. Does anyone read these days?
supoort doesn't mean the g1 will get an OTA update, since we no longer carry the phone in stores or even sell it online I highly doubt that G1 users will be seeing it unless you get a clean rom dump and Cyanogen & other devs build it up for you.
Officially, neither google nor tmobile have said anything on the matter of G1 and 2.0. The MT3G will be getting the expresso version of 2.1 once the slide comes out (rumor says), and since the mt3g and G1 have almost the exact same hardware (minus some ram) you will be able to run it. Cyanogen has made a superb version of eclair for us though, and you won't regret rooting just to be able to run it.
Officially I can tell you this as someone who's worked with T-Mo for 4 years. We do not release OTA's for phone we no longer sell. Simple as that. G1 will not ever get an OTA or 2.0 release. I could tell you it's a possibility but I'd be blowing smoke up your ass when I know you'll won't get anything. But as the person above me said it's defiantly worth rooting to get CM5.0.7
hehe...yeah u wish.
even if there is an official update i'll still go to CM 5.0.7...best ever

Picked up used Mytouch (3.5mm)-confused!?

Picked up a used Mytouch3g (3.5mm jack) and am confused a bit about what version of Android has been/is being pushed to it.
The phone has stock 1.6 on it now. Which is fine as the phone is for my wife. She was using my old rooted G1, but that phone was becoming unstable (constant random power cycles etc)
I'm just curious if 2.1 was ever pushed to it, or are they going right to 2.2. Even then, depending on what you read, 2.2 has or hasn't been announced for it (most articles say it is being pushed to the original Mytouch3g and not the 3.5mm or Fender edition).
Not interested in rooting this phone since I won't be using it (I'm on a Vibrant). So, can anyone enlighten me?
Yes T-Mobile is going straight to 2.2.1 Froyo. There was never a 2.1 for the MyTouch. Although they have started pushing out updates for original MyTouch they have postponed them due to many problems(I think it is mostly problems related to people not knowing what to do). All MyTouch phones will get the update, but for your version and the Fender it will be later. They have not officially announced when, but have officially announced that all MyTouch phones will update to 2.2.1 eventually. Original MyTouch is getting the update first and then hopefully we will get it.
Thanks for the info. Tried calling t-mo but they are doing system maintenance and, of course, couldn't answer my question. Even the chat "specialist" online seemed confused by it.
The tragic part is that my wife's new used Mytouch will probably see Froyo before my Vibrant does!
