look at these videos it compares the hd2 screen to desire hd screen , i really see no dfference in colors also DHD is 16m color , here it is the videos

HTC Desire HD (Ace) vs HTC HD2 display quality Part II

Iam not who did these videos , i found them on DHD forum
They look pretty much the same to me ..
yep id put my money that its the same screen from the same manufacturing line(maybe the cabelling is different to the circuitboard but thats it)
the only difference you will see is the "banding" on the HD2 due the lack of true colors.
try for example this wallpaper

however if you get a wallpaper in it's natural size (960*800 for a scrollable wallpaper or 480*800 for a static one) it won't band and will look perfect. Know how to use your device and you won't see the banding at all, no matter what image you use.

There is a reason that picture bands, and it's because the quality of it is rubbish. Whoever made it it it's current form above didn't give it high enough quality when saving it. There's artefacts in it which are visible in a zoomed in version (you can easily see them in photoshop @ 200% zoom) and the Hd2 screen just accentuates those. That is the FIRST picture (and I have dozens of wallpapers on my HD2 with gradients, both radial and uniform) I've ever seen that bands.
However I stick to my original point, a picture made in the correct way will not band on the HD2, no matter what it's content.

regardless of how bad the picture quality is, when you put it as wallpaper on DHD or galaxy S, it will be fine. but not on HD2.
is there a way around them ? sure why not. i am not goint to argue there.
the point of this thread is to show how close HD2 and DHD screens are. and talk about hardware limitations if any
and the HD2 lacks in this area due to less colors.
the HD2 has bad screen ? no. hardly. but its not the same as DHD like the OP or others wants to believe. its less. whatever you like this fact or not.
is there away around the banding pictures ? i would like to believe there is " i am not very expert to be honest. but i am sure some people can come up with the same screen with no banding on HD2.. who knows "

i know there is a color differencebetween the hd2 and DHd screen , but my point was that in real life it is not noticable , the videos compared allotof pictures with different colors and i haven't noticed any differences , my sony ericsson satio looks allotbetter tan the desire hd in colors , that is why i think that the DHD screen is not really 16m colors or it is a bad quality one by the way the 65k in hd2 limitation is a software limitation (kernel limitation ),
another thing this picture bands on my 32 bit samsung desktop screen (not so much but it bands )

1- the HD2 is 256k Colors. not 56k
2- i hardly think its karnel limitation. otherwise it would have been unlocked time ago with all those android roms and karnels.
you cant really judge 2 phones from a youtube video. sure they look the same here. but when you hold them face to face. it might not be the case.
its nice to see a 2 years old device like HD2 hold its own against a phone that is barely released. this is to show how HTC shuffle some crap and sell it to us as wow super amazing etc.
but it doesnt mean they are the same screen

on android we still shows 65k colors, hd2 is only a one year old phone ,i holded the Dhd and the hd2 yes there is a difference (not huge ) like the difference btween my se satio with lower resolution and hd2 ,satio screen looks alot better and more colors than both hd2 and desire hd ,that makes us conclude that htc is a big joke and like what you said cheating on us
Erm... Is it possible to change the tone of colors on the HD2 digitally with some software, like setting "digital vibrance" in the PCs videocard drivers?
The first time i thought about this when i put my Xperia X1 next to my HD2 and the Xperia's screen was much much more colorful (under wm 6.5.3). Strange, because i think the X1 also has a 65K or maybe 256K (doesn't matter) color panel and win mobile can use 65K on both devices...hmmm So there maybe a way to improve the colors on the HD2, by a software of course.
Is there a thing like this?

More than enough for any human, 65k like any other good ppc.
I think I saw in the specs that it's an 18-bit screen.
I also read that WM only supports up to 16-bit colour.
16-bit isn't enough for all purposes, especially photos with smooth gradients such as blue skies. Of course 18-bit would still give some banding.
OK, I did some mroe reading and the screens are 18 bit (both Touch pro and Touch hd) but the software is set for 16 bit because its easier on the processor. The 65k colors will be enough. I had thought my iPAQ was more but its the same. I jsut wanted to make sure I could run my AnywhereMap software on the Touch HD.
I heard that the Touch HD can't do 3G on US networks. Is that true and, if so, is there a hack to get around it?
"I heard that the Touch HD can't do 3G on US networks. Is that true and, if so, is there a hack to get around it?"
no htc device ever supported a hack to change the hardware supported frequencies so
doubt blackstone will be different
about the colour nr
then i'd say on such a small screen
16bit should be enough very large screens
one can see the diff with large colour changes on surfaces
but small pda screens one would have to be close
to touching ones eye with the screen to see and then
be being blinded by the backlight would make it impossible anyway
Looks like it CAN do US 3G afterall.

Nope. It can't.
It's also pointed out in the fourth reader comment at that same URL. The author just missed a very crucial "or" in the specs. I would assume the service manual states what the hardware could be configured to do. It seems that the current hardware is set up for only the first half of that "or".
I'm using the Touch HD on AT&T in the US. No 3G.

-3.5´ WVGA OLED (increased from 3.0 from X1)
-GPS, aGPS
-Accelerometer
-Faster processor
-512 RAM
-Custom Windows Mobile 6.5 (SE engineers customized Win6.5 which runs very. very speedy. in par with iphone and better in some cases)
-XPERIA Panels are modified with plenty of innovative features (PS3 remote play being one of them)

really??????????? wtf SE no serious cpu update come on ¿¡¿¡¿¡¿
and LESSSSSS storage?????????
i believe the hardware pics but that About screencap better be a joke!!!!!
furthermore if they try n shaft USA on fps again ill be writing letters!!!
Edit: after calming down a bit, slightly more formal thoughts emerge...
closer examination of the pictures seems to also reveal what appear to me to be two spearks on the back = sweet jesus stereo sound that i can hear! without hacks/cabs/whatever .. and do i also notice a HARDWARE lock switch on the side?! near what appears to be the cam button!? i'lll be dipped n **** n rolled in breadcrumbs! i've longed for this ! i really hope we get upgraded to a magnetic stylus.. so many cool features available from that..
also someone mentioned it looking like a bunch of plastic = i can live with that.. i baby my phone as it is.. hardly a scratch on it.. and seeing how i don't drop it in toilets or on concrete... i'm fairly certain i can care for a plastic smartphone just as well.. not too mention it makes the overall unit LIGHTER! a lighter xperia is a great thing imho
but reallly? the same cpu ? we've got serious competition across the board in Q4 09 and beginning of 2010 phones coming out with 1GHz cpu's and UP! why bother with this outdated CPU that doesn't even support 30fps if using the MSM201A i mean why have an 8.1 mp cam that can't even record 30fps?
INSANITY!
they keyboard= EXACTLY WHAT THE XPERIA NEEDS! an independent key keyboard so we don't have the same keyboard issues we did with the X1.. *(my current x1 isn't even a year old. has been repaird once (jammed power button) and babied the rest of the way and my keyboard is going out.. i key x key m key v key spacebar key alll have issues.. at this rate i'm wondering why i didn't just get a touch HD?
"insider specs" = obviously not a faster cpu
same or less internal memory? that doesn't even make sense with an 8.1mp cam on board! wtf!
wm 6.5, while not a huge improvement seeing as how most of us are already running 6.5 it's still a better UI *titanium* than the standard 6.1 today screen
Accelerometer = Thank god! whippe! the fun begins!! *was very sad when i found out my x1 en route didn't have one *
larger 3.5 in screen possibly AMOLED = this is a huge selling poing... the damn lip on the x1's screen is veeeeery annoying especially since i rely so heavliy on touch now that my keyboard has started going bad...
It looks like pice of plastic. But 3.5" and Accelerometer, cool.
But I dont believe that's X2, or why SE start using that much plastic?
I just love that brushed metal of X1.
That "insider" is Ronka, he's not exactly known for his accuracy. Or sense, half the time. I'd take it with a pinch of salt.
AFAIK it's the early proto,
possible processor change.
I still don't see a mouse cursor on the screen. It would be nice if that were included in the new release.
damn wrong... SE really screwed it up
Well, ya know people complained about the X1 being too expensive. So if SE is going to correct "that mistake", then they have to make the device cheaper/cheesier
My next phone will be a WM7 phone. I'll cram WM6.5 into my X1 when they officially release it.

Well Microsoft seems to be on a roll lately, with mainly everyone praising windows 7, it could translate to an awesome OS for mobile as well.
On another note, if X2 is supposed to be compatible with WM 7, therefore it would have to meet the requirements of it, like multi-touch, faster processor, and such...

True for the third time!
Ccccombo breaker?
What exactly makes WM better?
Performance? No
Look and feel\UI? Hell no.
Open source? No
Free? No
App store? Coming, but only for 6.5 (WTF?!) So, no.
OS updates? If your manufacturer bothers
Third party software? WM is better at software now, but Android has just started. And I believe android got more possibilities when it comes to letting third party's use every single piece of hardware in the phone.
Android got the donut update and 20 phones incoming this year so popularity will increase a lot. Androids strength is in its potential (of stuff we know are coming).
And we got the amazing integration of a tons of googles services, and lets not forget google wave that we can safely assume will be tightly integrated in android. Oh and android is the only mobile OS we've seen spotify on.
Then again, im no expert. Tell me why you guys think WM is better (besides the fanboyism I mean).
edit: oh and xda exists in order to FIX WM, but that does not make it good...

... part of the price you pay for your WM phone goes to Microsoft. None of what you pay for an android phone goes to google. Is this hard to understand? We're talking about the OS here, jesus.

Agreed 500%. Yes to all of them.
Ok,
App store: there are many dedicated WM app stores, so I don't really care now who owns that. Instead of one there are many to choose from. No problem here.
As for open source - just look at this forum. WM is definitely open source and is tweakable to the extreme.
Look and feel: well, a bit individual part. I REALLY like WM look and feel with plethora of available customizations around added to it's default look.
And I would say that the overall functionality is also on WM side.
Updates: Yes, we get free updates.
And in opposition to Android,
there's less things to improve or especially to ADD to the functionality of the OS,
so naturally you get more updates..
You talk about the connection to Google services: well, that's a bummer since I rather like to have easy connection to any services I like.
If you want to rely completely on ONE provider - your choice, I'd never do that...
And performance: well, where did you find your info?
IMO WM performance is generally great, with glitches as ANY other platform.
Plus: the amount of functional and diverse software is unbeatable on WM.
Android is young and it's one of the drawbacks too.
Well the question is in the title...
Is it unwise to upgrade an HD2 for a Desire HD ? (Average Cost of upgrade is around 250 dollars at the moment)
It's almost the same phone on paper... Is it really that noticeable ?
Sure, why not?
1. Do you have $250 to spare?
2. Do you prefer to have a native android phone?
Also, this would be better fitted for the Android lounge
its ultra stupid , miscellaneous differences if ur not gaming , buy some clothes for urself or somthin for ur girl(cough android phone cough)
unwise... much worst, upgrade? better think downgrade, Desire it always be a Desire, your HD2 could be what ever you want... think wise.
Thats my advise.
desire hd uses the new snapdragon processer so i say go for it, i sure would.

processor is still 1ghz, difference in performance is most likely base on marginal differences between the architecture between the hd2 8250 and the new desire chip, most likely though, differences are very negligible.
I say just use the desire hd build for a while. m-deejay's one is quite good right now, especially with the hasterin 7.6 and the newest libhtc_ril_wrapper.so and save some money.

ok . i really think you should read my post as it might be really helpfull for you.
i also had an HD2. Tmobile version " even tho i dont live in US but i wanted the extra rom "
however, i sold it for Galaxy S. mainly for :
- i wanted better screen. the HD2 screen is perfect size. better than 4 inch screen the galaxy S " for my own taste anyway "
however. the HD2 colors are really lacking. did you try the roms available in the HD2 ? some of the widgets like google voice command. youtube, facebook etc really look like ****. the colors of the device as far as i have been told is 65k only.
even some of the wallpapers you see stupid haze of different colors in between the wallpaper {pics} because the HD2 color lacking wasnt able to mix the 2 colors in between.
the Desire HD. doesnt have this problem. the colors are in millions.
also. with all respect to HD2 devs out there. cooked rom is a cooked rom. it will never be perfect. and 3 mins booting every time you restart the phone is ****ty.
HD2 are for owners who want to try Android before they buy it.
but if you come to love an android OS. u will need a native machine to run one.
i do agree that 250$ is alot of money. and you would want to think twice before you spend this money.
to be honest between my HD2 and Galaxy S was only 130$ i paid . thats why i went for it.
but since your asking if its worth it or not. it means you really into mobile phones and new tech just like me and many others here. and when you see the Desire HD in your hand you wont resist.
go for whatever your heart desire man. life is too short not to have fun with things u like. its not like your gona die because u spent 250$ on something u like.
one more thing.
i think u should hold on buying Desire HD for while. it seems most units have a defective problems. sensor etc. whatever HTC issue a recall or release a software upgrade, you should wait.
Havent you seen the threads around the net waning ppl that the phone is malfunctioning, what is a phone when you can't properly call with it..

the performance difference is not marginal. its around 1.5 faster. dont let stupid 1Gig number fool you.
HTC G2 is 800Ghz and it destroy the nexus 1 and Desire 1 Ghz. why ?
however. the base of the android software development is nexus 1 "google actually give you a free nexus 1 phone to develop if you are a developer "
so with nexus 1 as a standard. it will be almost impossible to find a game / app that use Galaxy S, Desire HD, G2, whatever super phone available " right now "
so aside from less lagging while scrolling. lil faster fps during games, faster booting etc. he wont tell the difference.
its not a jump from G1 to Nexus1 .
I got offered a Desire HD on contract the other day, and I was tempted but declined (mainly as they wanted £35 a month and I'm not paying that much for a phone over two years).
I asked to play with one and it was nice software wise, I prefer the feel of my HD2 in my hands tho. I use the MDeeJay FroyoHD build and software wise I really couldn't see much difference.
I love the fact that I've got a 4.3" screen and if I were to upgrade to an Android native phone it would definitely be the DesHD, but not right now with so many possibilities coming up for the HD2. You won't be able to run WP7 or MeeGo on the DesHD.
As for the comment about the screen only being 65K colours... Microsoft themselves say it's a 262K colour screen here ok so it's not the 16M colours of the DesHD, but it works perfectly for me.

65k or 256 is not much of difference.
also
i am sorry but how can you say its perfect when half of the wallpapers look like **** ?
when you try to click on the voice command in the google widget and an ugly pop up of black get in ur face and tell u " hi say i am ugly "
or when you download the facebook widget and you see the white level is not the same with weird ugly difference in color ? or youtube ? or any gray solid wallpaper in the background ?
any picuter that is rendered using " millions " colors. will look bad at HD2.
thats a fact.
now. is it worth to upgrade? up to u. are you happy with ur phone ? up to u.
but dont compare both phones as if they are the same when they are not

It's perfect for me because 1: my wallpapers don't look **** (why do you have to resort to swearing to try and get your point across?) I have noticed one tiny part of banding on one wallpaper I made myself but it also colour bands on my laptop so no biggy, and 2: everything that I use my phone for (calling, texting, internet, market, games, DLNA, music, satnav, msn, appointment reminders, emails) work perfectly on my current build. I use my phone probably about 6 hours out of my working day and 2-3 when I'm at home if I'm not with my gf and I get no errors, no force-closes, no times when I think "I wish I'd never bothered". If you're not happy with Android on your HD2, don't run it and don't complain.
The things that don't work for me are:
Youtube: I have a laptop and a desktop for this so don't care that it doesn't work
Camera: That's not the devs fault and I own several digicams anyway
And that's it as far as I'm aware.

1- you are right about its perfect for you. so i edited my msg. you can have a htc magic and it can be perfect u. for that i am sorry.
2- i am not cussing to make a point. and if you think saying the word "****" to an object is cussing. then you need to go out more. no hard feelings.
3- no one said the phone cant run Android very well. it runs perfect. i am sorry but where did i complain about the HD2 being flawed aside from the fact it screen is bad and it takes 2 mins to boot ? i am a new owner of samsung galaxy and i already hate the fact i cant switch roms from Desire HD / HTC G2 etc like i used to do with HTC HD2. there are many things HD2 have nice things in it.
dont read my posts as a challenge to you or your phone :/

It really did sound like you were trying to slam the HD2 as the capable device it is. (I remember when the Magic came out, trust me that phone is perfect for no-one lol)
I honestly don't think it's a bad screen. Yes it has a minor limitation, every phone has something that's less than perfect. You learn to live with it as there are no perfect phones out there. I am being honest tho when I say I notice no banding on almost all wallpapers, pictures, games or anything else I use on my phone so it's never been an issue to me.
Anyway, think the OP wanted a pretty direct comparison between the two phones, which he's had a few of. Let's let someone else give their opinions.

You, by your own admission, don't even have an HD2 anymore. Go and troll in the Samsung forums
What if the upgrade cost is 150$ from HD2 to Desire HD ? Go for it ?
I love the HD2 but I am sick of following updates on new ROM developments and all that, I just want it to work now.

I'm really looking forward to upgrading to this phone when it launches in the UK
I'm sure I read a review a while ago that implied that, when using the multimedia dock, it was possible to wirekesslt stream media from locally networked storage. but I cannot find it now
is there any way you could test this?

Unfortunately, I don't have a WiFi network to test it over (I'm connected via LAN) on video.
However, I have already tried out this feature, called DLNA, and it works seamlessly with Windows Media Player. You simply set up a shared playlist in Windows Media Player and then click on the DLNA application on your Atrix while connected to the same WiFi network as the server (computer).
It works well. My only gripe is that the Atrix cannot play back .MKV files.
@Stunno
I found a stray WiFi network to use. Obviously, my computer wasn't connected, so I can't set up a playlist to stream.
But I took a screenshot of the DLNA application. Overall, fairly easy to set up.

Great stuff! Thanks for the reply, Kenneth! It's very much appreciated, any thoughts on whether it could access samba shares?
I have a TV upstairs in the bedroom, and rather than run an aerial wire to it I was going to buy something like a Revo and set up media streaming (I have a couple of TBs of DVD rips on a NAS) Then I saw the Atrix + multimedia dock and it all became so clear

Hmm. I'm not too familiar with Samba. Here's an official Motorola rundown of DLNA on the Atrix 4G:
https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/60673/p_country_code/US
Thanks again!
From the list on http://www.dlna.org/ it looks like my NAS is supported by DLNA, so, hopefully, I should be good to go!!
Now we just need Motorol;a to get their fingers out and release it over here!
Many thanks again Kenneth!

Many of the folks here are seeing average to below performance with the battery. But you have rated it as exceptional. Can you provide more details on your usage during those 16 hrs?
Nearly every topic you listed had negatives for the phone but you say its a solid device? Id give it 2/5 stars at best. Really disappointed.
The screen is horrible - cant even display yellow properly. Not to mention its pixelated and washed out.
Battery life is abysmal.
Really the only thing I found "good" with this phone, was the call quality.

Im quite sure the color issue is software related. This phone was rushed out the door, lets not forget. I also think the camera could be optimized better through software also. This phone is just an infant. If we can get some custom roms on it the future is sky high for this phone. Right now it feels like a beta.
I read your review and while it was thorough I do have one criticism, and it can be levied against pretty much anyone who has used an AMOLED device prior to the Atrix.
Everyone falls prey to the "Ohh shiny!" problem of the AMOLED screen. Oversaturated color is NOT accurate color. It's just like in big box retailers where they crank up the contrast and backlighting to make TVs "pop". My Blu-Ray player even has a "store" mode in the settings menu that turns on different lights and displays that aren't normally running just to draw your attention. If you had it setup that way at home you'd go insane (not to mention not being able to sleep from the light in the room). Just because it's bright and shiny does not mean that it's at all representative of the real world, and the average person just doesn't understand that.
Also, the picture you used in the screen portion of your review comparing the two phones has to do much more with the different screens' viewing angles than their perceived color reproduction accuracy.

I usually use the device every other minute while I'm in classes or at work. I surf the net, usually visiting my blog and other tech blogs. Then I check out Analytics applications. I also watched a full episode of The Daily Show during my test... which was the biggest drain (Flash over browser). I don't know how anyone could say battery life was terrible. Battery life on this device matches my iPhone... and it's better than the battery life on any of my past Android devices.

It might seem like every category was negative, because I was trying to be critical of the device and point out its flaws. You must remember that all of the categories are weighted more than others. Speed and processing power is more important than the lack of video codecs... for example.

This is partly true. Over-saturated colors aren't accurate. It is also true that the angle of the picture makes the Atrix's colors look worse.
I did that angle for a reason. It was the only way that I could show how the two screens look side by side in true life. Every other time, the camera would balance the colors and the Atrix would look equal with the Captivate. The picture under the screen section is actually a very accurate view of the comparison between the two screens.

I understand the reason but it really provides a skewed view of the phone which is unfortunately a common problem in the media.
You must have a very sophisticated camera for it to compensate for different colors in different areas of an image. Mine (Canon Powershot S90) is only capable of adjusting white balance or hue/saturation/brightness/contrast over the whole of the image.

Canon Rebel T21. It's a friend's.
Not sure if it was balancing colors or if my lighting was just poor, but it wasn't communicating the major color difference when I took a straight shot.
I did include a straight shot with screens on in the gallery of pictures within the review FYI.
But, the color difference is much more dramatic in real life. Whites look more accurate on the Atrix. Other than that, blacks and ROYGBIV look way better on the Super AMOLED.
However, I would still buy this phone over the Captivate any day. The screen is still wonderful... and the resolution is useful.

This is not poorly encoded video, its due to bad gamma settings on the Notes screen, I get the black clipping even on the highesy quality encodes, as do many many others. I even get this on pictures taken with the Notes camera, yet I view the same images on other devices and they look perfect.
Your right, I just tried it on my 50" plasma and i black areas do have more detail but not a lot more, and i can see why my notebook and the note are having problems.
My first note had really bad black clipping, and i returned and bought a second and this one is much much better.

Nah, it's quite encoding dependent whether you get black clipping or not. On certain encodes the blacks are perfect and on others they clip.

So the Notes camera is encoding pics taken with its camera to look like crap on its own screen but good on all other devices?
This has been discussed in a million threads, there is deffo an issue with the device, not the encodes.
Videos that look great on my Nexus s, wifes gs2, ipod touch and my hd tv look like crap on my note when displaying shaded / dark images.

Incorrect. This video is just poorly encoded. Whether its the source or youtube compression, it clips on my laptop & desktop.
There are notes out there that do not have black clipping. I have one, as far as I know. I've never seen black clipping on my device so there are a few good ones out there.

Well I am on my third one now, kinda given up on ever getting this problem resolved.
This issue with black clipping/pixelation is a known issue called black crush.
It currently affects almost all notes, but for some odd reason only while watching videos, and sometimes photos (not playing games/regular usage).
Yes viewing a video which has been encoded well does somewhat help this issue, it does not fully resolve it.
The only full resolution to this issue will come from Samsung in the form of a new ROM or a patch.
Please search the general and development forums for a thread regarding this for more information.
Cheers!

where did you get such info about that samsung will released a fix for this issue in the form of a new rom or patch?
I believe that this is a driver/firmware issue to do with the screen, and not the technology itself, seeing that it is uncommon in other phones using similar technology for their display.
I do not have a particular official source saying that Samsung will release a fix, but in the occasion that they do it'll be some sort of patch to fix the firmware or install new drivers. This may come on its own, or I believe that it is possible that they may not release it unless it is fully integrated into a ROM they distribute. (Explaining my argument that it'll be released in a patch or ROM)
I am not saying that I am absolutely correct, but this is what I have come to a conclusion on based on my months of following this issue.
Take it as you wish.
Sent from my Paranoid Note (N7000)
I think it is a hardware fault with the screens or the controller, as notes with identical software one has bad black crush and another may only have slightly.
Also the "screen adjuster" app, setting that work on one note, don't work on another, each note is slightly or major difference, and if a fix is found will have to calibrated individually.
My second note has a great screen, virtually zero black crush, my first note had it really bad, and was returned.
One thing i don't want is Samsung releasing a update that adjusts the screens on all notes to the same, as i don't want my good note screen changed.
John.
