HELP! Trying to help a friend out. - Vibrant General

So a friend called me today and said he is having problems with his Vibrant and wanted me to come take a look at it. He explained that he flashed a rom and now everytime he boots it up, it gets stuck in a force close loop hell. I got there and verified that's happening and said that I could just flash him back to stock. Well, come to find out he's also hardware locked! I tried to figure out a way to enter safe-mode (have used this on my Mytouch but it had actual buttons to make this work) but it was no-go since it's capacitive. On top of all this, he doesn't have debug mode enabled and I can't get to the settings due to the force close loop and no working launcher/home. I couldn't get any adb commands sent to the phone due to no debug mode, so that means I can't even adb reboot into recovery. I spent almost 2 hours on it before I had to give up. Does anyone have any suggestions that I may have overlooked or not thought of?
Greatly appreciated! XDA has some of the smartest damn people around!

Yes, in fact I had that very thread open on my netbook as I was working on his phone. There's one (of many) problem with this:
"turn on USB debugging in Settings-->Applications-->Development"
As I stated in my OP, he doesn't have debugging turned on already, and I'm unable to get to it in settings because at startup it's in a FC loop and I can't get to settings either by holding MENU or using the launcher.
Is there another way to get to phone settings besides those two methods? How about going into safe mode? I've done that before with my MT3G, but it has hard buttons that facilitate this with ease. With capacitive, not so much. Is it possible to enter safe mode on the SGS phones with capactivie screen?

I seriously doubt this has stumped the brains of XDA!

Email me lets see if I could help

What do you think caused the force close loops? Was your friend tinkering with his phone? Did he install a lagfix? Are you doubly sure he's hardware-locked?Did you try Download mode?
Lots of questions...I had this problem once. It was due to the fact that installed Ryanza's early lagfix and tried to remove it. My phone had a force close loop, BUT I had enough patience to wade through the loops and in the very short gaps at which they appeared, I managed to navigate the phone into settings (~an hour). The moral is: Try very hard to get into settings and don't lose your patience.

You can try booting into safemode, maybe that will help. Just turn it off and when it powers on the second you see the animation start press and hold the home button.

From what I gathered, he tried installing the FrankenTwiz rom and something went wrong. He couldn't fully explain exactly WHAT went wrong, and so I'm coming into this whole thing without a lot of answers to help troubleshoot it. I know he's HW locked because that was the first thing I tried (recovery mode) and it's not able to get into it. When I fist got my Vibrant it was HW locked and the behavior is the same. I exchanged mine the next day for a non-HW locked. I tried every method to get into recovery/download mode but unable to. I remembered "safe mode" from my MyTouch 3G, but it needed the hard button (menu) pressed on bootup. Being capacitive screen, it doesn't respond the same way so I couldn't even use safe mode. He doesn't have USB debugging enabled and I can't get to settings to enable it due to the FC loop. I sat there pressing CLOSE a million times to find that "break" in the process to try and get to settings with no luck. Hope that answered everything.

That didn't work. I thought safe mode was MENU, not home? (btw- which animation? The tmo pink or the Galaxy S? Tried both an no result.)

Ok, figured out SAFE MODE!
Power up the phone and start pressing the capacitive buttons. As soon as they light up during boot up process, press and hold MENU & HOME all the way through until you see SAFE MODE appear in the bottom left of the screen. At that point you can release the buttons and you will now be in safe mode.
Now I just need to get in touch with my friend and meet up with him to try this. Hopefully it will break the FC loop from Hell and I can get into his settings to enable debugging mode.
**MODS - I didn't find how to get into safe mode anywhere in the Vibrant forums. Maybe it can be added to the Bible to help others? Thanks!**

That's new for me, mine goes holding the home key. Timing is of the essence though. I have to press and hold the second the S forms on boot.

I tried multiple times using your method and no dice. I get consistent results with my method (MENU + HOME), so not sure what to say...
Anyhow, it looks like he's screwed. Met up with him after work and even though I can get into safe mode, the TW Launcher is still going nuts, FC hell! Unable to get it to stop long enough to get to settings to enable debugging. He's going to put it on Ebay for parts. Dude had it for a week and is out $400. Feel so bad for him, but I guess it teaches him a lesson. If you don't know what you're getting into with flashing ROMs, better step back and either ask for help from someone with experience or just not attempt it at all. This was his first flash attempt and he crashed hard.

!! if anyone can help please do not hesitate, mostly appreciated.
Try to hold the Down+Menu+Power combination while INSERTING the battery into the device.
i try that seem to have no response and when unplugged from usb it loop at&t logo
or plugged in usb screen goes black and no response seem from pressing buttons
I had a similar problem as most phones in Canada seem to have Download/Recovery mode disabled, and here is what worked for me.
Grab something like One Click Un Root (all models), and click one click un root (obviously phone has to be on and plugged into the computer).
This should automatically reboot you into Recovery Mode!
All you have to do is "wipe data/factory default" or something like that (should be the third option).
As it states, you will loose all your data, but at least you will have a functionning phone!
did it work?
Hi. I have similar problem. Can anybody give instruction what can I do?
I have this problem too. Please help somebody
Add me to the list. Bell Galaxy S, went to unlock my phone the screen went black. Now it will not boot into the OS, the galaxy S splash screen displays then nothing. The menu and back button light up, thats all. ****[email protected]@
I have not rooted or anything.
Of course my download mode does not work.. Going to try this one click root thing if I can find it.
NOT HAPPY
This is not working. Probably because the phone is not in USB debugging mode as I can't change it... Is there any other way to get the phone into recovery mode?
**** me
i had the same thing happen to me the other day with my bell galaxy s and my phone wont do the 3 button combo trick. i left my phone plugged in to a wall charger for a while until the back of the phone became a little warm. i pulled the battery and then left the power cord plugged in and put the battery back in. i held the volume down and enter button until the battery charging indicator showed up, then i also pressed and held the power button until the boot animation started (this is the blue moving swirl and music, not the galaxy s splash scree) and then i let go of the power button. it took a few attempts at this before it actually worked, but eventually it will go into download mode at which time you can open the odin app, then plug in the usb cable and flash your phone that way. it did seem to make a difference if the back of the phone (around the camera area) was warm. if i let go of the power button while the music was playing and the phone did not enter download mode i would keep all 3 buttons pressed until it shut down again, then i would only let go of the power button while the phone initiated the charging screen, then once the battery logo was displayed i would hold the 3 buttons again and would just keep doing this until it went into download mode. i have flashed it at least 5 times today and i have been able to do this each time.
i also had an issue where odin would not recognize my phone was plugged in and windows would show a message saying the usb device was not recognized. i left the phone plugged in and while in download mode i pressed the volume up, enter button and power button until the phone went blank and when the galaxy s logo showed up i let go of the power button and the phone would go into recovery mode and then the usb drivers would be installed. i would then do the 3 button combo for download mode and odin would work fine. it took several attempts but it does work. i hope this helps you guys
If I hold all three buttons the splash screen does not come on, it just keeps looping the Galaxy S logo until I let go of the power button....

That's what mine did too, several times in a row and then it worked. For some reason it only works after the battery is charging for a bit and the back becomes warm. then it works at will
No luck. I am probably screwed getting it exchanged now too as I am passed the 14 days from Best Buy.
the on click thing doesn't work, if your phone is already bricked.
also it is not the phone's fault for not working, the phone was working properly before you tried the hacks.
whenever you do these kind of things you know you are entering into the "not supported" "not covered by warranty" zone.
in the worse case scenario, if you can no enter download mode to recover your phone, it'll be to take the phone back to bell and claim warranty on it, and prentent you don't know what happened to it.

Its my fault??
I did not hack my phone. Its not rooted, I did nothing to it.
By "unlock" I meant exactly that, unlock as in swiping the screen to unlock it.
The more I search the net the more posts I find of Galaxy S phones randomly bricking...
on the original message sounded more like you went to Unlock the phone, as in SIM unlock the phone using any of the tools available out there, and there has been already several people which had the same problem.
if you go back to Bell for an exchange, you better not use the word "unlock" rather use Swipe
as the message on the phone "swipe the screen to unlock"
there are no known issue about this causing the phone to brick.
if that is what happened to you, you should have started a new topic for people to help you, instead of hijacking the topic from the OP, as your issue is different from OP, the OP actually screwed up because he/she flashed the wrong ROM to the i9000
... anyways, Does it work if you reboot the phone?
I have rebooted the phone about 100 times. The phone crashed when I unlocked it to check a text I received. (not hacked). Has not booted up properly since. I have found many others with the same issue who have also not hacked/rooted/unlocked/ their phones.
Waiting on Best Buy to call me back. I am so pissed right now, I have been bragging to my friends and co-workers how awesome this phone is, one has already picked one up, I hope his doesn't brick too. Not recommending it to anyone anymore..
did you load a lot of MP3 to the phone?
can you boot into Recovery Mode?
in the recovery mode you can wipe the Cache and wipe the data
that should make your phone work normal again
it'll be best to open a topic to help you trouble shoot your interesting issue, as it's the first i've hear that you get a black screen after Swiping out of the lock screen
I can't get into recovery mode. I have tried every button combination I have found. I had about 2 GB of music on the phone. I also installed the Android SDK to try ADB, but since the phone is not in USB debugging mode it does not see it.

on the other topics relating to the 3 button not working.
have you tried the heating up method?
or the plugging the battery in, when all 3 buttons are pressed? (of course for this one you will need help from a friend, unless you are very skilled at keeping the 3 button on hold meanwhile able to slide in the battery in with out a 3rd hand)

3-Button disabled idea.

Ok, My phone's internal SD decided to quit on me a couple of days ago, so I'm sending it back to Bell/Samsung for service. However, when I was speaking with the bell tech, he asked me to put the phone into recovery mode by doing the following with the phone off.
Hold Vol Up, Home and Press the Power Button.
When the Samsung GT-I9000M logo appears, let go of both Home and Power. (Keep holding Vol Up)
Now, I did happen to have one with 3 button modes enabled. But I tested it anyway and it worked.
Hopefully it's worth a shot if someone could try this with 3 button disabled.
Tried and no go for me (i9000m)
Didn't work for me neither..
Any Idea why the 3 buttons are disabled yet?
Wanna try the same thing, only keep holding power and vol up. Let go of the home button when the logo pops
If I Hold Vol Up, Home and Press the Power Button, I go into FORCED UPLOAD by KEY PRESSING mode, not recovery mode... what is this mode for and how can I get recovery mode? So my buttons arn't disabled, they just go into this mode. I am on JM1. Is this going to cause me problems if I have a bad flash? I have seen elsewhere that this FORCE UPLOAD mode should be accesed by vol down home and power
don't work
the 3 button combination you mentioned is the normal method to go into Recovery Mode, there is no secret there
for a moment i though it was a new combo

The normal way of doing it was to release ONLY the power button. He asked me to release the home button and not the power button. Hence me asking someone without the mode to try it. Nothing more. My phone is working and goes in every time, so I had no way to know. I apologize for wasting your time.
Ok, well i'm glad this thread is started, i was about to do it before i noticed this one!
Right well, i've spoken with an engineer yesterday at a Samsung service centre near me - and he said that the 3-button recovery/download modes has to work, as this is what they use themselves in order to flash customer handsets with their own flashing equipment. So basically, he said if the 3-button modes don't work, it's a fault, and they would send the phone back to Samsung! He did in fact add that he hasn't come across this problem himself as yet. However, he went on to say he's not sure if you could get the handset swapped out purely to access the recovery/download, as customers are not meant to be using this feature!
(By the way the method given by OP didn't work for me, and i've tried quite a few!)
Recovery and download mode work on sasktel i9000m's
hi there, i'll be getting my Galaxy S later on today, just want to ask a noob question here, if the 3 button was disabled and i tried it with the combos, what will happened to my phone? will it brick and i have to send it back to repair? or i can unbrick it myself?
thanks,
Kiay

ah.... thanks for the quick reply, but how come people are saying that they bricked their phone and need to send it for replacement or so?
kiay reason why people have their phone bricked is because when your phone doesnt have the 3button enabled and you try to flash your phone to another FW and it stuffs up during that time you will get a PC->!->phone pic on your screen which means it wont respond to any button presses unless you put the phone in recovery/download modes ... obviously if you dont have the 3button to be able to put them in its respective modes you will have no choice but to send it in for either a fix or replacement
hope that makes sense... thats why phones with 3button disabled will have to return their phone to get fixed where as phones with 3button active it will be hard to brick a phone

Because something happened to their phone (via firmware upgrade, changing system files, or other things) and most of the time to restore these easy fixes, we need Recovery/Download mode and it's disabled on a lot of Galaxy S's.
can some one try these buttons?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=8130971&postcount=31
when i do it on my phone all it does is bring up task manager and volume max
still disable
So, is there an alternative if the combo is not working on the phone?
coz, as i read in the earlier posts, end users are not supposed to know this...and the dealer might refuse to take the handset back for this "fault"...

Enter U.S. T-Mobile Vibrant Recovery Mode Guaranteed

THIS GUIDE WORKED ON USA T-MOBILE SAMSUNG VIBRANT BUT MAY VERY WELL WORK ON ALL SAMSUNG GALAXYS PHONES
After reading many XDA-Developers Forum Posts to try and figure out how to get into the Recovery Mode / Download Mode without any success, I gave T-Mobile Support a call.
After the usual noop run-down, "did you take the battery out" questions, I simply asked them how to get the Samsung Vibrant into recovery mode.
Unline the many tutorials that claim to require the Up or Down button pressed, along with the Home button then the Power, the true process is as follows:
1. Press the Up and the Down button at the same time (yes both). I too thought that button was a Toggle which only did either Up or Down, but found that in fact it does do both.
2. At the same time, press the power button.
3. As soon as the Samsung / Vibrant logo comes up on the screen, release the power button.
4. Release the Up and Down buttons.
5. PRESTO
Download Mode from Recovery Mode: Allows File Push through ADB
UPDATE
Once in Recovery Mode, to swith to what I believe is Download Mode, due to the fact that it now allows me to push files to the phone:
Click on the MENU Button from Recovery Mode.
You do relies the people with this download mode problem have hardware locked phones, rite?
Therefore they cant access recovery because the volume buttons dont work
I had a hardware locked vibrant and got to recovery the exaxt same way he described. Ill attest its true. Don't know about download mode though. Sounds interesting.

You do realize that "hardware locked" means the volume buttons don't work ... right? Otherwise what do you think it means?

Then it wasn't a hardware locked Vibrant...
How do you know if your phone is hardware locked? Is the only impact that you can't get into recovery mode?
This technique has been around for a while and it simply does not work for hardware locked phones. There is no known way to get the HL phones into recovery from a power off.
ive tried this method many times on the 2 vibrants ive had over the past 2 weeks. hasnt worked. although i can get into download mode just fine.
Never mind wrong mode I was trying to describe
He used to think people don't know they should press both volume keys...
I dont think there is such a thing as "hardware locked" vibrants. I know people think they do have one but why would some be locked and others unlocked? It doesnt make any sense, the vibrant has only been out since July.

Whether they are defective or locked the fact of the matter is yea there is such thing, people are not imagining it.
Take me for example My first vibrant was fine...my jackass friend knocked it out of my hand and chipped very tiny piece of the fake chrome bezel. I only had for week so I returned and said it had issues.
I made sure I could access recovery with new phone before exchanging. They only had 2 left both with Sept date. Powered it up and no go, tried couple more time and still nothing...it was locked, we didn't even try 2nd one.
He ended up calling a friend at T-Mobile store in mall and had him look and see if he had any with the same date as the one i was returning "August ".
He had one and he had him test before i drove down....he did and he was able to access recovery, went down to mall and sure enough it was fine, able to get into recover first shot....so yes there is such think as "hardware locked" vibrants
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
I have flashed a vibrant with a i9000S software but the radio did not work quite well. Since the two have different keys, now i cant get it to boot mode. i was able to get into recovery mode via ADB but all i can do is use vol to go up or down and not select an option. the device wont even get out of recovery mode.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Yes, some phones are locked. I had to get my Vibrant replaced, and was bitten by a different bug.
I went to my mom's and my niece locked my phone out by entering the wrong pattern incorrectly while it was charging (brand new phone, had to charge it... I typically don't use a pattern lock but since my first one was stolen....).
Now, the phone does not allow you to get into it using your Google Credentials.
Called T-Mobile and the woman said I'd have to send it in for a replacement because it's a "software glitch."
I asked her to try to factory reset it. She said her "researchers told her not to try it because it can brick the phone." We tried anyways.
Hold down both volume keys and power until the Vibrant logo comes up, then release.
Doesn't work. Hung up on her and went to a T-Mobile store. They tried for over 2 hours to factory reset this phone, and spend half the time on the phone with Tech Support to do it. You cannot access recovery mode on this phone. The other Vibrant here, that we checked, also cannot go into recovery mode. It boots straight up into the phone.
So:
1. Lots of Vibrants are unable to get into Recovery Mode/Download Mode
2. There is a bug in Android that will soft brick your phone if you or anyone enters the wrong pattern lock too many times - you will NOT be able to get back into your phone with your Google Credentials - at all. The phone will be useless.
Even though your phone can download emails from Google, and your sending them to yourself using the same login/password, you will not be able to authenticate your phone and unlock it.
Two pretty catastrophic faults, IMO.
When this next phone comes in (it will be brand new, like my first/second one - they're on backorder) - I'm immediately selling it, ETFing my account, and going to go phoneless (can use Google VOIP from a laptop/desktop over WiFi/Internet) and wait for a decent Win7 phone.
I doubt they will have such issues.
BTW, the Android bug I mentioned (not being able to unlock) has existed for 2+ years (since version 1.5 or before) and despite many people bricking their devices (and some devices being unable to hardware reset - like many Vibrants), Google has turned a blind eye to it, and keeps either closing the tickets or setting the priority to "medium" (Bluetooth functionality is critical, however - if you get my point).
For a long time i was under the impression that my phone was HW locked. i was on my last legs before sending out my phone for repair (im past the exchange date) so i called my carrier (Bell Mobility in Canada). They informed me i could do a restore through recovery mode -> to which i informed them that i could not enter after i had tried for 3 days previously. So the rep that i was speaking with advised me to do the following;
Turn phone off
Hold Vol+ & Menu & Power
Once screen displays Samsung release Power while still holding Menu & Vol+
Viola -> RECOVERY MODE
So, this got me thinking because if this got me into recovery mode -> download mode should be similar
Turn phone off
Hold Vol+ & Vol- & Menu & Power
Once screen displays Samsung release Power while still holding Menu & Vol+ & Vol-
Viola -> DOWNLOAD MODE
So, i thought my vibrant was hardware locked when infact it was simply just the wrong key combination to get into each respective mode. Not sure if i just wasnt reading some of the posts correctly or what but thats what worked for me.
That doesn't work on T-Mobile Vibrants.
The phone simply shows the Vibrant screen, then goes black and goes back to the Vibrant screen...
Over and over again. It can do it until the battery runs out. It will never get to the Galaxy S Screen as long as you have that Power Button down.
The only reason yours worked is cause your phone is not defective like many of ours.
I think I'm going to make a YouTube video of me using my Google Credentials (from a computer) to send myself emails while the phone syncs them in the background, yet refuses to allow me to use these credentials to unlock my phone - as well as rebooting to the Vibrant screen over and over again when I try to get into Recovery to reset it.
Because some people on this forum really like to act like problems don't exist, and tend to think their ignorance or operator error invalidates other posters' posts.
Congratulations on not having a defective device, though!
Looked it up and its real

[Q] Safe Mode? What is it? How to get out of it?

I am having all sort of trouble with my newly flashed G1, the main issue being the keyboard only has 4 keys that work after a HBOOT flash back to stock..
It boots up to the google log in screen ok but in the bottom left corner it says 'safe mode'. I can find nothing in the G1 forums about it but one of the other forums (myTouch) mention it is where it loads a minimum amount of apps or something if booted while holding the menu button down.
Anyways, is there anyone who knows how to get out of safe mode? And why it might be in there in the first place?
figured it out. ( I searched xda using google )
hold the red and green buttons down together.
Some people say the menu button sticking causes this 'safe mode' to occur.
unfortunately my keyboard still only has 4 keys that work even without the safe mode issue.
edit: And upon rebooting its back in 'safe mode'. I would assume that means my menu button is stuck down? I wonder if that is why my keyboard is having issues too. I will have to tear it apart now.
hmmm yes good idea.. clean it all out than tell me what happens i will help you out from there
I think this safe mode isnt save at all...
One of the rep's told me to turn off the phone. Take out the battery for 20 sec. then reinstall and turn on. Should be out of safe mode.

Can't hardware boot into fastboot.

I think I'm bricked. My shield is stuck in a simple bootloop and should be considered a softbrick. I can't seem to get into fastboot. Forget adb, that's not responding, but I'm still getting the android boot logo. I've tried so many ways. Holding the button, mashing the bettenbetter, plugging at the brick, power at the console, just about everything. Anyone figure out how to get into fastboot with hardware? If so, please let me know or I'll be throwing this out. It just won't seem to respond to fastboot. Such a shame.
EDIT: Android figured it out somehow and just booted, but I'd still like to know how to get into fastboot for when I'm not so lucky next time. Or any other way to get into recovery.
EDIT 2: Thought I posted this in troubleshooting. My mobile data was lagging somethinf fearce. Sorry.
It can be tricky mate. The way I did it was to unplug the device and then put the power cable back it. As soon as you plug the power cable back in hold the power button down until the fastboot menu appears. It took me a few tries. Of course if you have adb working the easiest way is "adb reboot bootloader"

It can be tricky mate. The way I did it was to unplug the device and then put the power cable back it. As soon as you plug the power cable back in hold the power button down until the fastboot menu appears. It took me a few tries. I have done it once before, but it didn't work the way that their confusing instructions said. I'll give that a shot though. When android just flat out won't boot enough to access ADB, it can be problematic.

It certainly doesn't help that there isn't a physical button on the Sheild, so your not absolutely sure your pressing in the right place after re-inserting the power cable.
In my experience the whole button is sensitive, bit that's still a pain. I have no problems booting my phone to recovery or fastboot, but that's just nuts. Oh well. Hopefully teh learned something as I'm sure their techs are complaining too. It is a consumer device, so I guess I can't be too mad, but still, they expect us to reflash before an RMA when needed sometimes, and that's not fair to ask with thes device lol.
I have the same issue here. I was able to get in fastboot hardware wise a bunch of times before. Now I think the device is done. I've tried every combination. What's weird is I did get a flicker of the bootloader continuing once. What could have changed that the bootloader is not responding anymore? How did you get lucky, let it sit there loading for a day? I've tried to see if fastboot commands can reboot the bootloader when I plug it in timing it correctly. So frustrating.
Yesterday from many many trying times I did it only once and don't wanna go cross again and don't ask me how I don't know how and still don't know how. I did everything by "book/instructions" finally give up and just randomly (panicly ) pressing / holding finger on it, power on / off...and then somehow bootloader screen appear. That should be fix by Nvidia

I hope some developers out there will create some magic solution how enter easily in bootloader mode, like using micro sd ports some modded scripts or usb ports where in plugged in mode console entering bootloader mode or recovery etc.

Glad I'm not the only one having issues. I've been trying everything with no luck. I'll give it a few more tries and then It's going back. Following Nvidia's instructions is BS. There is obviously an issue going on here that needs to be fixed.

It will definately go into fastboot, it's just a matter of timing. It's really tight. In the end I stopped following their directions and just tried a bunch of random stuff. I tried so much I don't know what worked, but doing what they said wasn't working for me.

Same here, mine is stuck on on screen and stating production fused , and couple of options like recovery kernel forced recovery, none works fallowed nvidia instructions , tried downloading SDKS And followed commands nothing working , as well tried holding power button , and unplugging and nothing works, I will try what you guys did and see maybe I get lucky somehow
I have a Shield TV power device but the screen is black and I can not go to the Hardw
