Dockbar Preview-video is up!
Note: The dock and assets in this video are outdated already. Take a look at the new screenshots below to see what we have improved.
Update 2: Official website now online!
Update: Added feature-descriptions.
--------------------------------------
Introduction
So, what is 'Slick UI'?
Like other apps, such as LauncherPro or ADW, Slick UI is a Homescreen-replacement Launcher. It will replace your stock homescreen and add in some great new, more functional and aesthetically pleasing features to make the everyday use of your Android-phone more... well, fun!
The goal of this project is to make the Launcher silky smooth, functional and highly customizable.
Sounds great, but how does it look?
UPDATE: Deleted old screenshots and added new below. Notice the enhanced/space-saving 'WonderWheel' and the redesigned app-drawer.
No more 'pull'. The app-drawer will be full screen. We needed this space to include the full featureset. A full screen app-drawer also opens up a lot of possibilities for eye-candy/animation.
Let us know what you think!
How far along is the project?
As you can see in the video about our dockbar, we have made some decent progress on the development. Things are going very well. But remember; we're a small team, so we can only do so much in our spare time.
In the future, we might require some testers to report back on bugs etc, but for now I'd like you to just tell us how you think it looks and let us know what features you would like to see implemented. Please stop asking for the Beta through PM's.
Currently announced features
Feature: Innovative app-drawer - videodemo demo coming later
We're aiming to make the app-drawer the most powerful ever seen in an Android Launcher. Some of the features will be:
• Support for tags. Tag your apps, choose a tag-color and quickly access all apps assigned to that tag just by tapping on a shortcut.
• Side-swiping withing the drawer. By default, the app-drawer will show all apps on your phone (there will be an option to hide certain apps). Swipe right to browse through your tags, swipe left to access the 'Recent apps', 'Most popular apps' and 'Memory info' (Number of apps installed, available memory etc). A great example of this can be found in Tweetdeck.
• Re-arrange your apps within these tag-'columns' by holding an icon and move it over the grid. Other apps will 'automagically' move out of the way.
Feature: Customizable dock
Like in Launcher Pro, there will be a custom dock at the bottom of your screen in which you can drag-and-drop your shortcuts. You can either directly drag-and-drop them from the homescreen, as well as from your app-drawer. This will not be limited to applications. Any kind of shortcut can be dropped into the dock, such as contacts, bookmarks and even 'tags'. Clicking on a tag will automatically open the app-drawer and swipe to the appropiate tag-'column'.
Feature: Customizable content-wheel (WonderWheel)
Coming soon. Currently working on this.
Also, you can have up to seven homescreens, and we're aiming to add in the popular 'birds eye view' feature as well, making it easy to quickly navigate to the desired homescreen and organize the order in which they are displayed.
--------------------------------------
FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)
Q: "Please do folders in Slick UI!"
A: There will be folders in Slick UI. Both our own interpretation and Android native folders will be supported.
Q: "Can I be a Beta tester?"
A: Yes, but right now, we're far from providing you with a working code. When we feel confident in sending out Betacodes, there will be a seperate Beta sign-up page which you will be informed about through XDA and the official Twitter-account for Slick UI.
Q: "Do you have a releasedate?"
A: Currently, we dot not have a releasedate. The project is still in it's very early stages.
--------------------------------------
If you want to help us out, because you have mad coding skills and experience with Android, be sure to send me a PM.
I'll be doing most of the graphics, but if you feel like helping out with things like icons or other stuff, just let me know!
Note: I cannot respond to all private messages at XDA, as there are too many coming in right now. I appreciate all the feedback and Beta help offerings, but I have over 100 requests already.
Don't worry, if your PM is important, I will get back at you ASAP.

I would be willing to beta test on my device

Count on me
Not only for testing, but also with any help with graphics designing. Love the idea to change things around and this project looks amazing and it would change the way we look to our phones. Nice concept UI idea.

Good looking project! I don't have any development skills, but be sure I can beta-test it 10+ hours a day.
Good work, pretty interesting. Good luck with this innovative UI. Hope to see it working soon.

Looks like an absolutely amazing app. Can't wait for this to come out. Would be willing to test this on my Droid 1

can't wait to try out this new UI

Does it matter what the resolution of the screen is?

As long as I'll be able to change the four parts of the "wonderwheele" and still have one screen to either side to put my widgets - im ready to go all in on that

hi,
what will be the minimum resolution?

Yes, you'll be able to choose what content will be in the Wonderwheel, and third party developers can also - in the future - create modules for it.
You will also have up to 7 homescreens, and you'll be able to modify them to your liking.

dare i say it - looks better than htc sence. for this to be good however, please make it possible to update facebook without launching a app, and have some way of viewing comments for posts. would love to be a alpha/beta tester. (i have a htc wildfire if it helps) pm me if you would like me to be a tester.
UPDATE: if it helps i have a htc wildfire (QVGA, Qualcomm MSM 7225, 384MB RAM etc)

This looks brilliant! Like other people, I'd like to test it as well.
I'm sure how to improve it though, because I think that less is more, in this case, to avoid overcrowding of the UI. This is just my opinion, though.
Anyway, keep up the good work, guys!

Wow, looks... uhm... slick?
I have some Java experience but didn't look into android development yet, but wanting to start that soon. Though I don't think I could help in this project soon.
But I can help testing, I have both a desire and an adp1. So if you need any help with that: I'm in.

great; I will be following this thread

I can help for graphic & designing

I wouldn't mind being a tester for this launcher. Can't wait for it's release.

[Rada-Dash] Launcher Design

Hey everyone. I'm working on a new launcher for my T-Mobile Dash (S620). Its in its infant stages. i have a few sketches, and 1 fleshed out concept. I'd like to get some feedback and see what y'all think. The pin-wheel above the clock would rotate to show day and night. It was inspired a bit by the layout of the xbox 360 dashboard... and every other according menu ever made (microsoft wasnt first)

love your mock up. Imo, I would see what those tabs cascading from highest on left to lowest on the right might look like. then make every one a different color- user customizable even. I really dig what you got there othrwise great work.
I don't have a dash, but that looks pretty sweet. I would use it if I did and I do have a few friends with Dashes and I would definitely let them know about this.

I have a little bit of documentation reading to do before i get started on development. I'll try to keep this thread updated for y'all. I'd love to work along side someone who knows what their doing. i can write actionscript and parse xml all day long... What will hold me up this project, is my unfamiliarity with developing software for wm6.
looks great.. hope to try it soon..
Radakast,
Looks good. Hope to see the finished article soon.

Looks like the blade style like the xbox360 uses. Nice! This would be an awsome launcher for my 8525. I must commend you on taking the launcher gui in a different direction. Most people are stuck in the Diamond/Iphone theme rut and its causing a lot of repetitive results. Enough of my babbling. I definitely will be keeping an eye on the development of this launcher.
Brilliant idea! Your design is way too dark however.
Seriously one of the best home screen concepts!
Forgive my ignorance but is your device a smartphone? What program will you use to develop your screen? Having just left a smartphone (Moto Q) I was under the impression that the homescreen customization is limited except for a few programs (i.e. SBSH Facade, phoneAlarm). If there is hope for homescreen customization, i'm all for it. I am just curious how it is possible.
Hey guys. I spent a few hours working on this this weekend. thanks for everyone's replys
@Vision77
Thank you. I'm a web interface designer, and im trying to bring alittle bit of that action to the smart phone platform.
@N1c0_ds
Yes it is way to dark. I designed it in my pitch black room at 2 in the morning and it looked plenty bright. I made a demo for my phone (linked below) and i was tryign to show it off to people yesterday and had to cup my hand over it... not good! my next revision will be much lighter.
@jerkules
You are forgiven. Its written in Flash Lite (Targeted Flash Player 7 written with Actionscript 2). I can blabber on and on about the technical abilities of flash player 7, but I'll spare you. pretty much its going to work like this:
dash.exe will be written in vb or c# and will work as the glue between the phone's api and flash. it will interpret the phone's commands (ie: display that you have missed a call) and my flash api (which will be open source when im done so you can all make custom phone aps in flash...) will update the flash movie with the new information. and then wm6.1 will be told to use dash.exe instead of regular home.exe.
And now for the update.
I'm really excited for this project. yall seem to enjoy it so ive added it to my stack of things to work on.. Here is the progress i've made
And because its made in Flash. i can post a real example, not just screenshots of it.
http://www.motionharvest.com/forums/xda/dash/radadash/examples/clock_and_sliding/
I've made a small movie too. this examplifies N1c0_ds analysis that its too dark. im also not going to win any cinematic awards for my camera work.
http://www.motionharvest.com/forums/xda/dash/radadash/examples/clock_and_sliding/dashexample.wmv
enjoy
reserved for possible update
Great Idea!!! i really like it, if i may just make a suggestion, maybe on the slider for texts, have some type of notification that there are unread texts. maybe something for missed calls as well? cant wait to see where this is going. Good luck!!
Great idea, love simplistic designs. If you need any help with the flash stuff I would suggest twolf, he's done really great work with flash for throttle launcher.
I've just seen this & I must say it looks really interesting. Has there been anymore progress on this recently?
To the OP - are you able to update us on progress please?
Thanks

yrgo 2.2 beta - skinning support UI

Hi guys,
I've prepared a new version of yrgo that supports skinning. This is the very first version so I'd like to ask you whether can you test it and give me the feedback? Thanks a lot.
This version supports 320x240 resolution only.
The VGA will come with official release.
The beta version can be found on http://www.2daysoft.com/yrgo/beta/2.2beta/yrgo.cab
I've also set up a yrgo forum http://www.2daysoft.com/yrgo/forum

Well, I gotta say this is pretty sweet. It gives you much more freedom that UL to customize anything on the screen. One thing I noticed when I tried to change the background is that the image gets blown out of proportion. Is there a specific size for the BG picture? Also, the program only allows one type of file for icons, which is .png.
I find the interface pretty simple to use and so far I have not seen any bugs. I might find this by myself later, but can you switch desktops with finger gestures? I tried a few times but I didn't get anything.
Anyway, keep it up. I will try to play with this later and see if I can post a few screens of my "design."

Hi,
thanks for feedback. The yrgo should be able to load bmps, jpgs, pngs, etc. Have you tried another formats than png?
The proportion of the background or pictures around is not set-up, but it should fit the ones you can find in yrgo installation folder. Pictures are in this version not resized so what you give to yrgo the yrgo shows .

Ok 2days, here is my advice to you and its just my opinion so take it for what its worth...
This forum is a great place for developers because you get instant feedback on your product. A lot of the people here are brilliant and can give you feedback on how or why to do something. Here is the caveat... we expect to be paid for helping you to develop a program. We don't expect this in the way of a cash reward. We agree to do this so long as you agree to provide your software to us for free and I don't mean a stripped down version!
The Thumbcal developer had the right idea. He developed the software and used this forum and its members to perfect it. Once it was perfected he put it on the market for a price but the people that helped test it will continue to use it as their reward.
So, the point is, you benefit from free, knowledgeable beta testers and we get cool software as a reward. A very symbiotic relationship.
My 2 cents....

Hi,
thanks for your feedback.
At this moment I do not plan to release yrgo as completely free version. I have my business plan I'd like to use it until I decide it failed. In such situation I'll start to think about another possibilities but until that, the yrgo will be paid. But I also think about some "basic" and "pro" version. The Basic should be free, the Pro should be paid. I'll see.
Anyway, if people here don't agree with my Threads they just simply can ignore them. My posts will become useless then and I'll stop sending anything.
I do not want to annoy or spam anybody here.
I just want to know what people think about my software. If it is so big problem, just tell me. No problem.
Best regards,
Luky

the only cool thing is that you can move the icons anywhere you want.. other than that.. its meh..
why not judge the final product when it's done, not in the state it's currently in...
pff, already looks much better that any wm6 version i ever saw even with interfaces like mannilla 2d winterface pointui spb ms wad 3 ore anything like that!
Hey,
I would also like to see an Android Skin.
I like it, and its really nicer than WM, it looks like a fingerTouchOS.
Maybe we'll get a skin anytime.

Cant be too hard to skin in Throttle Launcher, especially since the next version will support scrolling both vertically and horizontally and with support of panels and on screen object movement.

what i think was meant by the TL post is that the new version is going to have moveable widgets.
and honestly .. the way we do the skinning, application dev and hacking, and everything else is done around here..
we can do it.
the device thus far imo looks like a piece o chit!
the device is ugly and the skin itself is just a white topbar, a wallpaper and some icons, can be done with every app here.
Here is my skinned Android. Hope you like it!
egz whats the batt life on it?
I'd like to put here on snooze!
what i like to see now is some Android inspired apps.. i'm quite sick now of pseudo-iPhone apps (well, excluding A_Cs S2 lineup that is)..
how about an application such like the Android drop down notifications.. it's totally replace the bubble notification icon when you have more than 1 notification.. and it's easier to access than pressing that darn icon on the topbar..
it's pretty handy, if you ask me.. i hope someone develops something like that..
here's a video demo of what i am talking about..
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hy-YcGNyJds
I'm a big for on Android (I just ordered my G1 from T-Mobile), but I odn't think there's much to the user interface. The Standard interface can be completely customized so I'm sure we'll see quite a few variations once people actualy get their hands on it. Personally, I'd like to see a TouchFLO 3D type of interface on Andoid which will give access to a lot more information than simply having a desktop with a few widgets and icons on it.
If you're really interested in creating somehting like this, my suggestino would be to do it with Wisbar Advance Desktop. You can quite easily create the look, but it might feel a bit static since it's hard go get thing animated with it.
I believe this is a better Android Skin...!!!!
Better than to have just a simple skin of Android, would be to have the complete OS in our HTC devices!
That would be nice!hope someone is working on that
Cheers
Once they release the source to Android in October and more devices start coming out, I think Android is going to be hard to beat. I bet people will start skinning it right away. It has so much potential.
Almost all that android (the one in the first post ) does will be possible to do with next version of ThrottleLauncher:
- Scrolling footer.
- Widgets.
- Scrolling programs.
- Scrolling contacts.
I don't know if a miss something .
I plan to end a private beta during this week, and it the beta testing goes allright I plan to release it as "unstable build" publically so pleople can start messing with the new features .
I look forward an android skin too . When I'm ended developing this new release I'll gladly help anyone trying to develop a theme for throttle.

[APP] [WIP] [CONCEPT] Google Talk Widget

ok so i got a bit bored doing my Law Case Study so i quickly chucked together this Google talk widget concept.
its very much in the zune/windows phone 7 look but at the same time i tried to make it match the new gingerbread colours and be comprised of very minimal elements to make it easier for people who like to skin things
in my mind it works very simply, the bottom displays a series of dots each dot represents a contact to switch between contacts you simply swipe left / right along the contacts gmail at the bottom (localised swipe to prevent issues with home screens).
you type in the top box black represents incomming the grey / white represents outgoing. green dot is obviously status (contemplating making contact dots at bottom represent status colours to)

well if you would like to put me down as a designer you can , but that's about as far as my usefulness will probably go on your project as there is no way id be able to code anything for a very very long time.
ideally i would like a code partner lol so i could design blah blah they can make it work then we can split market profit LOL!, ahh dreams
You can start designing for the dialer application. MDPI and HDPI must be done. Just tell me when you're done.
Omg that looks awesome. I was hoping someone could FINALLY make a gTalk widget of some sort considering it's my primary mode of communication.
Hopefully something arises from your concept. Will be monitoring and donating if something like this would come to fruition.
Wow, this would be awesome, one of the few apps that I'd actually pay a couple of quid for (as long as it was relatively bug free).
Times like this I wish I could code, would love to see this.
I'd love it too. Really raises questions as to why one isn't included in stock..
wow this widget would be badass.....
ill keep an eye out for it in the future

It will require the gtalk app to be hacked and a new api must be used to bring up the keyboard on homescreen and send typed letters/words to the widget.
btw: swiping left/right for changing contact won't work, it probably have to be implemented with two buttons.
And: The conversation list will probably have to grow from bottom to top so you can see what you are typing..
this widget is really needed ^_^
As a real Android AppWidget, this seems quite impossible.
Read the docs and you'll see how limited android app widgets are.
It is possible to integrate it in a launcher's code directly, and I would love to see it somewhere eventually. Nice design
And?
Scrollable widgets have also been impossible until developers agreed on a proprietary scrollable widgets api.
I'd love to see some sort of popup rather than a widget. If you're already going to press home and scroll over to a widget to check/send messages, it isn't much more work to just open the app. But if you could make some sort of popup that could come up over any part of the screen, that would be much less work and actually be useful.

Just had a great idea for a new launcher that I think would work really well on the Android platform (well, what doesn't? [don't answer that]). Going to post a mock up pretty soon so watch this space, hopefully if people like it then maybe someone could build it?
I wouldn't have the first clue where to start to actually build one, but would really like to learn how.

The idea is that the dock has all of the apps in it, and you scroll through them easily, and if you want to view say, the messages for instance, you scroll through to the messages tab (would have to be a nice smooth fast action, not scrolling through pages) and then drag up on the icon to reveal the messages.
To close the app you would then have to simple drag down from the top bar and it would slide away into the dock at the bottom.
I feel if someone could help me make this that it has a lot of potential, the only problem is that standard apps would have to appear within the constraints of the bubble, which may be a problem, but hey, it's day one so I'm open to suggestions.
Please let me know what you think, I'm going to making previews for as many apps as possible if I can today, but I have other stuff to do, so watch this space!
Obviously some apps won't be all lovely and transparent like the mock up here, but if they could just appear within the bubble that would be pretty awesome I think. It's a much more swipe friendly design that some of the launchers out there at the moment, that I feel are constrained by what is already on the market or what others have already seen.

It looks very very promising, altough it looks complex and hard. I hope you can find the way to do it, because you can go really far with this.
Good luck, I will definitely have an eye on this.
Mock up of an actual message being written. If I could create a transparent keyboard I would do! Don't have the time at the moment.
Forgot to add the back button at the top, oops :|
So basically a webos like "card" system but not as good

This does not help me at all, but thanks for the demeaning comment.
Not wanting to pour water on your fire. I can tell you are all 'fired up' about this launcher, but why waste your time making these lovely screenshots and 'hoping' that some dev will come along and make the launcher for you.
You are obviously talented, why not do some reading on the forums and have a go at making your own launcher. Once you have a basic one running, I'm sure there will be plenty of members of the community willing to help you.
Just a thought
That's what I'm trying to do, i just don't know where to start!

He might have meant it as a poke to investigate webos for inspiration... not all comments are based on emotions you know

Lots of concepts and no development at all.
P.S. I know abit of android programming.

Maybe we can help each other? I'm completely starting from scratch but would really love to get stuck into it and start building my own apps.
I would love to contribute as well
BUT
I have absolutely no experience in programming at all......so yea.....
I'm just reading a bunch of stickies and googling to see if I can find anything that breaks everything down nice and simple instead of the FAQ on android.com

Sure! If I can help. XP
On summer holiday so have plenty of time.
Will be in camp for next few days and will TRY to make something after it.
Hope that your design will become true!

Me too! Yeah the Guide on the Android Dev website is a bit convoluted to say the least!

Not trying to demean you or this launcher just trying to describe this launcher using existing os ideas like those of webos. But the fact that the os isnt designed for this type of use would inherently make it not as good as webos.
And yes ill agree that the documentation on home screen replacements is rather lacking. Your best bet would be to look at the source of the Android default home screen

All great things have to start somewhere. I think the concept is good, real nice. I also will be looking out for it. Can not help with building it (no idea how) but I can offer to help test it.....

I tend to agree.....just reading through in order for the first few pages has stumped me...but I have a very basic, basic idea now.
i'm going to the library to see if I can borrow this book which seems pretty good
