Data.img browser for pc - HD2 Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and Genera

Is there a tool for the PC that will allow me to open and copy/paste from the data.img file?
Thx.

What exactly are you trying to achieve? There may be another way around it if that software doesn't exist (I've never heard of one)

I was looking to do the same thing, being able to edit the image without affecting or booting the ROM. If I figure out a way, I'll tell you. I'm currently looking into it.
*edit* I think it might be possible with a Linux distribution to mount the .img file and modify it. I found a thread that talks about resizing... Here it is: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=3643103&postcount=4824
I suggest you read up on mount options in Linux with the help of a live CD... I don't really have time to play with this as I'm at work.

Use Virtual Clone Drive

You can download Virtual Clone Drive free from Slysoft and mount 'data.img' as a CD-ROM and read/copy from it.

try it in ubuntu

You may have to install the filesystem drivers for ext2 from http://www.fs-driver.org/. But I have no ideaa if they are compatible with loop mounting in virtual clone drive. Obviously Linux OS's support ext2 out of the box.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I'll try your suggestions.

yea a linux distribution would probably be the best and easiest way. and you can just run a live cd version, and save your modified data.img to your windows drive, since you should have access from linux.

You don't put the files on the storage card. You create a new directory in the root of file system called "Storage". This is confusing I know. You want a new folder called "Storage" on the *same level* as your "Windows" and "Storage Card". Then you put the files in Storage/Program Files/Haret.
Also if you are using the kernal from that site (i.e. pre built) you wont be able to do anything. On boot it will crash with a kernal panic. If you want a working version you have to compile your own kernal from the source in their repositry...and I ain't talking you through that! Even then you only get a command prompt
Lewis
WOW THX!!!
but now i have a kernel panic^^
Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(1,0)
after that the device is freezed
only what i can do is a soft reset!

Yes! I told you that would happen! See my above post. Have compile the newest kernal to get anywhere - and even then you only get a command prompt.

Next Problem, did i understood that right, that i need linux on my pc? because that looks like in ubuntu in the shell or a other linux.
cd /usr/local
tar xvfj /path to/arm-linux-gcc-3.4.1.tar.bz2
vi ~/.bash_profile
add in the line: PATH= ":/usr/local/arm/3.3.2/bin"

i havent linux on my computer. so what could i do? can somebody send me the kernel, or his complete folder with linwizard?
mail: [email protected]
Thanks!
Grab a Linux liveCD like Knoppix www.knoppix.org or DSL - Damn Small Linux which is only about 60mb so will be a quick download, if you install it to a USB stick too then you can write files to it as well.
EDIT: Just realised that if all you want to do is to extract files then grab WinRAR it does most things like tarballs and the likes.
Yes you need Linux to compile a kernel - and a fair few dependencies.
I have attached a kernel i compiled (I *think* it's the latest). I can't see why this would be a problem as the source is open to anyone, but if it is let me know so I can remove it.

interesting, can anyone post some screen shots of Linux on the wizard?
This one seems a bit more recent, and will get you a command line without a lot of hassle:

Hmm.. but the linux seems to be bit far fetch from being usable, huh? Usually, I'm good in getting stuff from the web, but it seems that this linwiz information is a bit hard to dig. I was just wondering, how functional is it currently? I know that there are a few linux for others Windows based phone and they have quite a history to them, so I presume there are some working linux that can be transfer to the Wizard?

Yeh it is. It's all on that webpage I linked a while back. The wiki is where you'll find instructions. If you find the readme file it talks you though it., but the compiled kernel I posted above is the latest anyway. It is only a command line and people are still working on it. Long way from being at the standard of other devices (Blue Angel, Universal etc.). But still, its hope! I for one can't wait.

Thats the same thing. Experimental way of getting an x-server running. If i read the forums right they've since found a better way using the more compatible linux frame buffer standard instead.

Mount them where? And for what purpose? There are ways to mount image files(loopback), though I'm not sure about the format that can be used. At any rate, it'd require modification to the OS.
Forexample if i copy an iso file on my SDcard and then mount it like you can do on windows with DeamonTools or on ubuntu http://hacktivision.com/index.php/2008/02/24/how-to-mount-iso-images-in-ubuntu-the-ea?blog=2
I was just wondering if it is something that can be done, sky is the limit with Android aint it?

I'd imagine it's possible with a rooted phone that has the appropriate kernel modules loaded. It's not exactly built in though, so aside from having the kernel modules ready, you'd have to manually mount it through the shell to some folder somewhere, and even then you'd only be able to access it through a shell or one of the file managers. At any rate, it doesn't seem too useful since there's no software for Android that requires any kind of disk(that I know of) and you'd have to have the image file on the sd card, which is already readable by the OS. So anything that could possibly be on the iso could just as easily be put on the sd card.

Yes, it requires recompiling the kernel to support the correct filesystem. I did it the other day with a debian install disk. It's not too hard.
You will need a kernel that support cdfs,
mount -o loop /sdcard/name.ISO /path/to/mountpoint

Making/editing system.ext2 in Windows 7

I am wanting to change and get my own build working... based on enomther for the Nexus One.
Currently I do not have dual boot setup (had to format pc). Is there anyway I can just edit a current system.ext2 file that I already have in windows or would I need to generate a new one in a linux based system.
Basically I want to know if I can take an update.zip file for the N1 and replace everything in the system.ext2 file with everything in the update.zip file.
Pretty sure you need linux to mod the ext2
have you tried using a VM to install linux into?

yea, I had it running on my PC before I had to wipe it. I just havent gotten it running again. Been so busy with work and school.
I am off for a few days, so that will give me something to do.
Suggested solution
I've managed to mount system.ext2 to Windows 7. Without VM and Linux at all.
What tools are needed:
1. Windows Ext2/Ext3 driver. You can get it from here.
2. Any software to mount image to virtual drive. I've used Gizmo Drive, but there are others also working.
Tip: Gizmo doesn't show ext2 as supportable image type, when you browse for image. So, manually type *.* filter.
Just download a disc image from here...
http://www.livecdlist.com/
Burn it to a CD and boot from that. No need for dual boot.

Data2system without deleting data

Hi!
I read how to make Data2System rom. (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=14047481&postcount=14)
I try it and it works so good. I wrote a script which do that steps automatically. There is one more difference. Now the script don't flash your rom, just transform the selected nandroid backup. So you don't lose any of your data.
1. Download this zip, and unpack it to your linux running computer.
2. Backup your rom in recovery, and copy the folder (clockworkmod/backup/<yourbackup>) from your phone to the directory where you unpacked the zip.
3. Rename in data2system <yourbackup> folder to <yournewbackup>. Take care <yournewbackup> don't contain spaces.
4. Open a terminal, and type cd <the unpacked folder> (e.g. /home/user/data2system).
5. Type ./data2system <yournewbackup>, check the output in terminal. It should be something like this:
Extract boot.img
806 blocks
Command line: mem=214M console=ttyMSM2,115200n8 androidboot.hardware=swift
End extract boot.img
Change boot configuration
Pack boot-new.img
Resize boot-new.img
Boot image prepared
System and data images replacedIf you get any errors, try this tutorial again!
6. Done, copy back, and you can make a restore It works if:
you have a nandroid backup
your system.img is not bigger than your data partition on your phone
Download zip here: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/18578045/Data2system.zip
If you do it again with the changed backup in practice you'll get your original backup.
Awesome. Gonna try this out.
This doesn't work!!
did you even try it yourself??
i followed everything carefully
data2system is not a recongised command
Because you have to type ./data2system <the name of the folder> and not .\data...
AND check that on your computer is running LINUX

Linux is a kind if OS.
Did you heard about Google? You can find for example how to install Ubuntu. Ubuntu is just one of linux OSs. You can run it in virtual machine, or just boot from live cd, or install instead of windows, or install to another partition beside the windows.

Well Linux is an open source operating system, there are alot of differant distributions of it, (infact Android is based on Linux) you can download most distributions of it free, a few are Ubuntu (which I have in a VM) Fedora, Back Track and Red Hat (paid).
It is recommended to either dual boot your PC or run Linux in a virtual machine because program compatibility isnt great with it although you can use emulators to run programs like wine.
The switch from Windows to Linux isnt easy though especially if your not great with computers because there is so much differant.
Here is a download link for ubuntu and VMWare player (both free) for you to try out, and the data2system method in this post will work.

if i use mur4iks bootloader to resize my partitions like this (or whatever)

is that still like data2system??

Its 2 different things. When you change bootloader it really resize your partitions. It take effect until you change it again.
This script (Data2system) only change one of your nandroid backups. So when you flash a new rom, or restore one of your elder backups the system partition will be the original partition. Its safer then change the bootloader, but it take effect only for one backup.
For you: if your data partition size is 234 and your system is 150 (because you change your bootloader) and then you do Data2system. On that rom you will have only 150 data.
Data2system is for someone, who need more space, but don't want to resize partitions or change bootloader.

[Q] [Multirom/Ubuntu 13.04] Access internal memory from Ubuntu

Hi all,
First of all, Multirom: Great work !!! Using Ubuntu 13.04 Desktop for my schoolwork on my N7 and works perfectly.
Except, I can't get to my internal storage (aka SDCard, /storage/emulated/0/) from Ubuntu.
I have done some research and so far, the only conclusion I have for it not to work, is because Multirom uses some sort of chroot jail for the ubuntu folder. I have done some adjustments of the init script and the local script (located at the ubuntu folder inside the Multirom folder), but it had no success.. I tried to make a hardlink from /storage/emulated/0 to a folder inside my Ubuntu "chroot", but it doesnt work.
Does anyone has any idea at all on how to fix this?
I downloaded dolphin from the software center. After installed, open terminal and type "sudo dolphin". Provide root password and dolphin will open. Your internal sdcard contents will be available in the left payne of the dolphin window.
It is not that multirom is in a chroot jail. The "multirom" folder on the sdcard is just given different permissions to keep the media scanner in android from getting access to it, so it is not running and looking for media there.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda premium
Thanks ! Tried and succeeded.
For anyone else: you do need to be root in order to access the folders, as above mentioned.
