Is something like Advanced Task Killer good to keep my battery running longer and phone running smoother? I read Task killers actually make computers slower. Is this true?
Simple answer...no. Android allocates by itself. Ending talks might actually waste more time as it will need to relaunch again

Juice Defender works better for battery life than task killers. I use the free version and get a pretty good extension.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Yeah I am using Juice Defender, and my better is barely dropping with everything on.
What exactly is different about Juice defender than task killers, how exactly does it work? And how much of an extension can i get?
Coming from the cliq rooted with a 2.1 rom, atk was a necessity IMO.But ive hard that task killers are not needed with froyo and that it hurts more than it helps. But ive noticed that even with atk on froyo, apps aren't being killed unless I go to settings/applications/manage apps to force close myself. Ive tried just not force closing or killing apps and ive noticed it being a memory hog and decrease in performance and battery, but thats just my own personal testing.
What's your opinion on task killers and such? do I need it or am I better of without one?

I am using "advanced app killer'. A number of stock apps will restart right after, but most others will not.
I use it right after starting up, and after closing some apps (they often keep running in background). I think this is helping materially with my battery life - which is fairly good.

not needed, just like gaww stated

is a horrible thing. the second u close an app and it instantly reopens itself your cpu shoots up 100% and you end up killing more battery by doing that.
Haven't seen the need for a task killer. I run System Panel app and what I'm seeing is the majority of the apps listed are on background and not taking up CPU power at all.
If anything, once I root, I'll probably use Autostarts just to minimize the number of apps that run at startup. But right now... not even necessary.

I'm so tired of this discussion to raise any of the many valid points why task killers are bad.... just don't use them lol.

Just don't use it

Task killers are okay, just not needed. The real issue is the auto killing and killing system apps.
Long press home, use that instead if really necessary.
I use automem killer and keep it on a strict setting

STO0CK TASKKILLER FTW : go on desktop , menu , create shortcut , place shortcut of stock task killer , awsomee! ! !

im sayin stock tassk killer is as good if not better than any of the task killers (as far as killing programs go , not to monitor system so much ) but stock is simple clean neat easy and made by company that made Your operating system , why not use it .
(at least You can be sure the task killer is not some mallware program stealing Your identity)

BTW : dont kill the task all day long You need stuff in memory if you kill things all day long they will take awhile to boot because u clean memory frequently and programs have to load up allover again instead of being in memory ready to be used )
Okay thanks!

dont thanks ! lol , that was only my opinion i dident help do anything P
Lol fine

lol , cool =>
where you using autokiller? because if you where thats a different type of task management app.
auto killer is used to tune androids natural task killing abilities. also galaxy tuner also has these features built into the app.
Here is some informed info on using these types of memory managers.

Oh well check out that info I posted. Besides having auto kill on lowers your battery life because its constantly killing stuff. Your phone uses the same amount of power regarless if you have things in memory or not.
WOW , i didnt say battery preformance decrease because of task you kill BUT! it increases loading times ! which also decrease your battery !
No one said you said anything bro. I was just sharing information I know to be true as confirmed by developers that I follow. My info was not directed at anyone or anything.
i know bro , if i sound mean i didnt mean too , and i was JUST SAYING TOO .
Ever since I updated to ei22 my available RAM is virtually gone and its killing my battery. My battery usage meter says 78% of the drainage is due to the android system. I have tried doing a hard reset, using a third party app killer, using a different launcher, nothing helps.
::Edit::
I recently switched to launcher pro and it has helped battery life signifantly but system ram is still being hogged.

I'm running the ACS ICS V4 rom. I have the same issue with android system eating up ram... but it has hurt my battery life at least not that i can tell.
You can give Cynanogenmod7 a try, it hardly uses any. It still has minor issues, but well worth a look.

Im starting to think gingerbread is just larger compared to ec05. Im,getting waay better battery life and performance from launcher pro.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Get Memory Booster Lite from the Market. It has a great task killer and you can see what apps keep loading so you can freeze or uninstall them. The stock task killer is worthless.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Full memory doesn't kill battery, but flushing it and refilling it does. If you keep trying to free memory the system will just keep trying to fill it up again. It's how gingerbread works, keeping the most recently run apps in ram so it doesn't waste battery reloading them again. It should clear memory when you need it for something else. As far as the battery meter is concerned, they reworked the code in Gingerbread, so you can't compare usage to Froyo. It's possible your battery usage is coming from some app or widget you installed that's syncing all the time. The app killer is probably wasting more battery than it's saving.
I'm on ei22, with some bloat removed and fuju tweaks I can free up 210mb of ram

If you want to keep more ram free, use the V6 script. The V6 script will lower the ceiling of ram allowed for tasks rather than flushing it constantly and allowing it to refill- like a task killer does. Using a task killer will only kill your battery faster.
Also, this has been said in other words already , keeping tasks in ram does not kill your battery. Once a task is loaded into ram it takes no additional juice to hold it there.
+1 on the v6script I can get my ram down to 125mb. In the task manager & 80mb in the running services.

Where can I find the v6 script, do I need, clockwork mod and be rooted?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Yeah you'll need root (I think) and you can find it in a search or look for the how to run v6 supercharger on gbking's youtube channel. Its real simple
Sent From my 1.4Ghz V6'd Legendary Epic >-<
Yes, you need Root, and Busybox... Most ROMs have this built in... Adrenaline Shot is nice too... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1236779, you can use both in conjunction(junction whats that function) and your phone runs sweet smooth like butter.
Does anyone use them?
Heard from some guys at verizon they can actually be bad for your device not sure if I believe that so what is your opinion ?

Care to explain why they're bad for your device?
As yes, I use them
Well he said on newer devices they can slow them down , I was super convinces by this either
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
It does more bad than good. Its forcing applications to be removed from the memory. Which is uneeded as android will handle its own memory there is no need for you to use a task killer. When you clear apps from the recent apps list.. that does the same thing as a task killer.. but natively. It will remove the apps from the background and will indeed stop them. Dont worry about task killers.

Exactly what ÜBER said, task killers are a no-no.
In theory they slow your device down, cause extra battery drain and are not needed since eclair 2.1.
They remove running services which the device loads back up into memory again using CPU cycles which uses battery.
Leave android handle all memory, it has had a major overhaul since it was first created.
