it's the main reason for the major battery drain (every time there's a significant drain, i open up advanced task killer and notice there are 10+ apps running). i'd like to know what the point in this is? some of these apps are useless, and i can't see why the android would want to load them to make anything run more efficient. so is there an app that lets you choose the apps you want to "disable"?
and is it going to be better when froyo comes out?
if you have root, you can uninstall them
Just cause atk shows an app doesnt mean the app is actually running. This ignorance is precisely why task killers suck.

Get root, get Titanium backup, uninstall.
A program like system panel will show you which apps are actually active (running)

Just curious to see how many everyone here has after a reboot. I have 30.
30? Lol.
Typically I have 8 or 9 right after boot. I kill all those except my task killer, clock (for alarms) and 1 widget. Only if I go wild from app to app and not kill them all day will i get 10 to 20 things running... and even then my battery life is fine though things tend to get lil laggy

Using Autostarts from the market. I think I have close to 30 listed as apps that will run on startup if I didnt disable them

I've been using it for nearly 2 weeks without any problems. And remember in the market its called Autostarts, there is one named Autostart which isn't it.

Woah autostarts actually prevent startup, not just killing them on startup.
Coming from the cliq rooted with a 2.1 rom, atk was a necessity IMO.But ive hard that task killers are not needed with froyo and that it hurts more than it helps. But ive noticed that even with atk on froyo, apps aren't being killed unless I go to settings/applications/manage apps to force close myself. Ive tried just not force closing or killing apps and ive noticed it being a memory hog and decrease in performance and battery, but thats just my own personal testing.
What's your opinion on task killers and such? do I need it or am I better of without one?

I am using "advanced app killer'. A number of stock apps will restart right after, but most others will not.
I use it right after starting up, and after closing some apps (they often keep running in background). I think this is helping materially with my battery life - which is fairly good.

Thanks I will try that out. But yeah my battery life if pretty good when I really try haha. But yeah I've noticed apps just reopen, I guys I have to just get used to the froyo ways

not needed, just like gaww stated

is a horrible thing. the second u close an app and it instantly reopens itself your cpu shoots up 100% and you end up killing more battery by doing that.
Haven't seen the need for a task killer. I run System Panel app and what I'm seeing is the majority of the apps listed are on background and not taking up CPU power at all.
If anything, once I root, I'll probably use Autostarts just to minimize the number of apps that run at startup. But right now... not even necessary.

I'm so tired of this discussion to raise any of the many valid points why task killers are bad.... just don't use them lol.

No... No.....
I get better battery life without it.
Don't use it for any version. Android has its own management and frees memory as needed. The only way it'll help battery is if you need to close a rogue app causing drain. For this use Samsung task manager or system panel.
Thanks for the info

Anyone know if it's possible to remove the TouchWiz 2.2 Task Manager via Titanium Backup for example (or another method if possible), without repercussions to the stability of my phone?.. If someone could answer this or direct me elsewhere it would be greatly appreciated. I figured I would use this thread as an opportunity to plug another question as I was also curious about the OP's question too.
I choose to use the advanced task killer on the market on auto kill, while I know it's not necessarily needed for Android with JIT I feel the freed memory launches apps more quickly. It might just be mental but it's always done good by me so I use it

Unless you're using Android 1.x, there's no reason to use a task killer.
Removed mine, thanks for the info.

I use it too and increased my battery life. Now I use only about 1% battery drain per hour of none use.
you dont need to remove it unless if its like a AUTO killer.
I keep ATK advanced task killer on my app list.
I mean who knows when a apps just gonna go crazy on me?
and the Android Task Manager doesn't see all the apps so... thats lame, i keep mine, but use it when a app is like freezing/slowing me down
Agree while in general task killers are not needed on 2.2+, there are some applications that still missbehave and need a force kill to function properly again. Personally I just use the stock Samsung task manager and widget, which does not mess with any system services.

I hate atk, but I do use the task manager that is included in the roms I flash. I use the task manager ONLY when an application freezes or doesn't operate correctly.
I've removed mine through Titanium. If you're uncomfortable just freeze it.
Don't blame me, blame my keyboard's autocorrection algorithm.
Just wondering how I can remove messaging, phone, and camera from my girlfriends nook on cm7 running from sd card. I cant find the system apps bookmark like I can on any other phone/tablet

Answer.
To bring that back, you hold on the screen, tap on Launcher Actions, tab Open/close App Drawer, and there you go! Access to your apps, where you can delete them!
Thanks for the answer but I meant delete them permanently from the nook. The phone app just wastes battery and since you cant message and take pics she wants em gone

If you are rooted I would suggest installing TI (Titanium Backup-free) and freeze the app. Sometimes nuking out apps that have interdependency can create problems. Freezing the app in TI should accomplish what you desire safely.
I believe the phone app was proven to not use the battery?
Like cell standby and phone idle under battery use was false.
Oh thanks to the both of you ill do the titanium backup thing but does it remove it from the app drawer?

Gosh. Been a while since I froze an app. I don't believe so. But as it's frozen, unless you have a butt-load of apps and scrolling through them is an issue, it really shouldn't matter. IMO.
Well to me it doesnt matter but my girlfriend is just ocd enough to care lol

My wife is the same way, and was getting irritated that they were in her way. I ended up installing Go Launcher EX and then was able to create a Folder in the App Drawer called SYSAPPS. I put all the unwanted system apps in there and they were out of her way. Cleaned the app drawer up nicely. Not sure if another launcher will do that, but knew Go Launcher could. She likes it now.

Using LauncherPro, you can hide any app you want. Just go
"Preferences->General Settings->Hidden Apps", choose the ones you want to hide, tap "save" and they're out of your way.
No need to go through switching launchers. or creating new catalogs. if you freeze them with titanium backup, they will disappear from the app drawer.
Don't turn off google talk, even if you don't use it. google talk must be working in order for the market to function. some other apps, if they arent installed, will filter the availability of certain apps in the market, although I am not sure if that is effected by freezing or not.
On a side note, I have read the threads about the telephone and message apps supposedly not effecting battery life, and they do spins reasonable, but I an beginning to question if theyv are right. I definitely have processes related to unused phone apsa running on my nook using memory.
The android.telephony process is shown to be running in several running apps lists, and is using 2.3 MBA of ram. I am just starting to wonder, is all...
I use both methods mentioned previously. Organize my app drawer using Go Launcher and freeze, as well as backup apps with Titanium. It's also well worth the money if you like to try different roms or tinker but don't want to loose your apps or their data.

Heard from some guys at verizon they can actually be bad for your device not sure if I believe that so what is your opinion ?

As yes, I use them
Well he said on newer devices they can slow them down , I was super convinces by this either

It does more bad than good. Its forcing applications to be removed from the memory. Which is uneeded as android will handle its own memory there is no need for you to use a task killer. When you clear apps from the recent apps list.. that does the same thing as a task killer.. but natively. It will remove the apps from the background and will indeed stop them. Dont worry about task killers.

Exactly what ÜBER said, task killers are a no-no.
In theory they slow your device down, cause extra battery drain and are not needed since eclair 2.1.
They remove running services which the device loads back up into memory again using CPU cycles which uses battery.
Leave android handle all memory, it has had a major overhaul since it was first created.
