[Q] Fresh vs CM6 - Hero CDMA General

So I tried both and I ran into a snag, I loveeeee HTC Sense, that's what sold me on the Hero. But, I'm also obsessive about battery life, and battery was way better with CM6. Unfortunately, I've gone back to the nandroid of CM6, and will not get my Sense anytime soon. So here's my call: Make a Sense ROM with better battery!!
Now I have a question, since I love Sense, would it be worth it to get an extended battery, or is there another ROM y'all can point me in the direction of?
Edit: I don't want this to turn into a Sense vs CM6 thread. I probably should have thought out the title beforehand.

Using HTC Sense, go into settings, wireless networks, and then (I can't remember exactly where you go next) but there is a check-box that says "Enable Data Always On". Uncheck that. That will keep your 3G off while your screen is off and will save you a ton of battery life. Your only other option is to download Juice Defender from the market (which pretty much does the same thing, except it enables 3G once every 5 minutes to check for new emails and stuff).
Hope that helps you get battery life out of sense. (Another option is to use CM6 with Launcher Pro Plus which looks and acts a lot like sense and has lots of nice widgets.)

Thanks for the reply! I've done that before, but I just didn't get the same results as the collins tweak with CM6

I get the same great battery life using sense as I do using cm6. On sense, use autokiller set to aggressive and turn off all your gps and location services. As well as auto sync and background data.
I run cm6 the same way but I can leave background data on and get the same quality.
With either set up I get more than a full days use with moderate to heavy usage. Facebook, lots of texts, browsingxda, random internet searches.
That's from about 7 30 in the am to 10 30 ish and ill still have about 30 percent left.

or just get bigger battery..lol
my seidio 3500 mAh last forever... with everything on.. and brightness all the way up..
I modded the battery to fit behind the htc oem extended battery door..<----which matches the hero.. and is not a piece of cheap junk like the seidio door..

[URGENT] Best for battery?

Hey guys, I'm leaving for a hike later this evening, 100km over 3 days and I need to use my Hero to track my exact location.
My question is, what is the best ROM for battery life?
I took the Hero on my last hike which was 30km tracking with MyTracks and running my own 2.1 ROM (see sig) and the battery died after 9 hours.
I DO NOT care what features the build has, I need it literally to be able to run MyTracks with GPS and nothing more for the next 3 days.
I have taken an emergency charger but the battery time that's likely to give me is negligable so I need something that can make the difference between an extra hour or two, or if more is possible it would be really great.
Any advice would be appreciated asap.
Thanks.
Frankly, with GPS on, even if you turn off everything else, theres no way your going to get a standard Hero battery to last 3 days. Take charged spares.

I'm aware of that, but I don't have any spares, not time to get hold of them, you an't just buy the things locally.
I'm looking for a ROM that will give me atleast a bit more battery life than I'm likely to get with my current one and hope I can find somewhere to charge half way (1.5 days) in
maybe modaco's 3.2 ROM? its based on 1.5. the kernel would offer best performance i would have thought. all the 2.1 ROMs have bad battery life so my advice would to be stay away from those.
next time buy this bad boy

Yeh, I'm currently frantically modifying the stock 1.5 to remove Sense etc and see if iI can modify it it to be a bit more battery saving, I don't need 99% of the apps cause I just need it to run myTracks and nothing else.
My concern with Modaco is all the additions and performance increases may not necessarily be battery efficient, and the one and only time I tried ModaCo was a bad experience.
As for 2.1, of course I know theyre not great for battery, I made one (see sig)
im currently looking for a 2.1 that has decent battery performance im on the VillianROM 5.1 at the moment.
might try yours next
sincerely , i dont think that any roms would be able to get you one and a half day with gps.(
what i noticed is that battery drain differed from rom to rom with a couple of hrs between them ( like 3-4 maximum) but nothing like days

Even 3-4 hours is good enough, it gets the last recorded location 3-4 hours closer to where i was before the battery died, I'm hiking so there is only so far I can have gone within that time.
I'v just stripped down the stock Hero ROM and removed all the HTC junk including Rosie and Lockscreen and most of the apps, all of the htc widgets etc. Going to see how I get o with this, I really do like Rosie but will be interesting to see how I get on with this ugly duckling.

the mugen battery is very nice. i even bought one for myself at the beginning but i ended keeping it in my closet. The phone gets too thick and the lovely htc hero just looses its charm
well maybe you could try mcr 2.8 , disable all data sync(even google ...), even disable mobile network ( or switch on 2g). basically you can disable all the phone functions and use it only as gps i guess cause u need it for my tracks only.

Yeh, most probably, but which ones are light weight and stable (I'll stick with 1.5 builds because theyre official and fully working.)
Like I said I'm currently ripping everything out of the Hero stock one because I havn't been able to find a decent vanilla 1.5 for hero, most of it seems to be for the G1.

you could try aychteesee's vanilla cupcake from here :

I would recoment SetCpu or something to keel the CPU running at 245mhz.

Use SetCPU or CPUoverclockwidget.
I use CPUoverclockwidget because it can change the CPU speed to 128MHz and also change how fast the phone should be in standby and with screen on.

WTF is up with the EVO battery!

first off, i love this phone. no joke, but the battery is well...laughable to say the least. on my HD2 running android, i get double the battery life and they HD2's battery is a 1200 battery, the EVO'S is a 1500. and android boots off the SD CARD and has NO POWER MANAGEMENT on HD2'S. my evo dropped to 54 percent battery today in 3.5 hours. no wifi, no bluetooth, no GPS and no 4G...all im saying is... WHAT THE ****!
It gets better. Load up some custom kernals + setcpu and you'll get great life. I'm running CM6 + snap 8.2 and it lasts the whole day with moderate use.
Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk
There is plenty of info on battery issues with EVO.
First... I would recommend rooting.
Second, use the FRESH build based off the new OTA leak.
Finally, change Settings / Mobile Networks / [uncheck] Enable Always-on
Then... ALWAYS keep your WiFi radio on. Add your home network if you have one... and wherever you go, add whatever hotspots you are in proximity of.
And if you ever consider doing a new build, backup your WiFi access point data via Titanium Backup before you do.
That should just about cover it... You will get a full day of use PLUS some out of that battery.

PS those 3500mah batteries on ebay for 10$ and the same 2000mah batteries.

Oh and I am getting great battery life with snap and cyanogen's rom.
yeah i am going to look into all the batteries, and i love sense, that is why im not on CM6. all my other phones are running it (G1, MT3G HD2). now that i have a phone that runs sense naturally, i dont wanna change it. i love sense! and this thread was just a way for me to vent about my crappy battery.... lol

When you rooted it, did you also flash the newest radios? Trust me on the fresh build.. it rocks... but also, most importantly, use WiFi whenever possible... and turn off "always update"... those are all the most important.

No when I got my evo I was clearly.told and shown a doc from sprint (the manager over mobile area is a buddy) to tell everyone to expect 6 hours of battery life with normal use. I was able to squeeze out 8 - 9 myself. I know people say conditioning the battery is a waste of time . IMHO do it I noticed a nice increase in battery life. I have to laugh at people who get pissy about battery life when they are holding a mini PC.
Myself i avg. 18-20 hours a charge with normal use. I have 2 backup batteries so I don't worry to much about juice
from the fade
I really dont feel the Evo is a bad phone h, hell I love the damn thing . I just feel HTC kinda screwed up things in the process . One telling customers to expect 6 hours of use is alittle of a joke . Who the hell only works six hours a day ? Or is that six hours also include you getting up getting ready for work then coming home before you go to bed ? Second , its pretty clear the Evo has a bug in its charging system . People have reported that using stand alone wall chargers to charge the batteries they are getting improved life out of the batteries (Sorry I have never removed a battery from any cellphone I have had in the past to charge it and not gonna start now) . Third yes the HTC Evo is litterally a pocket pc with capabilities most phones dream of having . Then why the hell did they give it a 1500mah battery ? Thats like strapping a 55 gallon drum of fuel to the space shuttle and saying "Yeah this outta make it" . Sorry for my rant had to get it out (plugs phone in to charge again) LOL
OP, I like you, you're funny
A couple things..
1) Why do you have your CPU governed below 700mHz while awake??? You won't save battery that way, your phone runs at a gHz, use it!!
2) Setting your min/max both at 245 on sleep will actually decrease your battery life and your phones wake up performance, maybe not much. Capping your phone at 245 when asleep makes it a harder transition to awake because it makes that sudden jump when you wake it up. Setting your max somewhere over 600 on asleep, and setting it to OnDemand will ease the transition from sleep to awake.
There is no shortage of battery life tips but here's one: The auto rotate function polls for g-sensor status like once every 15 milliseconds. I use a switch on my homescreen to turn it on when I want it and keep it locked in portrait when I don't need it. This will help conserve some juice
I'm only scratching the surface here, I'm sure you do realize what a wealth of info there is on the subject already. FWIW, I use the crap out of this phone and I consistently get 20+ hours out of a charge. Good battery performance is achievable!

[Q] Anyone able to develop a ROM for say, camping?

Just thinking a no frills, reduced power state, low res icons, low output, rom, that will allow the battery to possibly last 3-5 days on standby?
I would say turn it off, but what if people needed to meet up and need path info, etc...
Just curious on thoughts and if it was possible.
You could use one of faux's orange roms which are stripped down quite a bit, flash his lv kernel, turn data off and keep your phone on airplane mode and just turn airplane mode off when you need to check for someone needing directions, etc. Would recommend bringing a car charger or solar (though don't know how good those are) just in case. Doubt you will see 5 days but if use its limited, think you could get close to 3. Will take some trial and error but keep us posted, am interested in this as well.
Edit: Forgot to mention cm7 is great on battery life as well and under clocking whichever rom you choose may help also.
Will definitely do that on trip coming up. I was thinking for dev, maybe just a dialpad and text function, remove all else, wonder how that would work.
orange glacier, lv kernel, set cpu conserv 245/4xx, 2g, gps off, bt off, brightness 10 with black background, remove all apps you don't use then backup. when you go camping restore the backup, when you get home restore your normal. should get at least 60 hrs if it's just a comm tool every once in a while. I get a consistent 30 hrs without limiting anything at all, so I'm sure more than 60 is possible.
I actually just put in Orange Glacier too, I like it but not really sure what the difference is as of yet, Im sure its there, just not terribly noticeable.

Difference from what? Orange is pretty much stock but has been deodexed and a different kernel added. Also, some of the apps have been moved to a different place but are all still there.

Of course, I suppose I just assumed he was on stock already. Wasn't really a plug so much as offering something similar to the "standard" user experience. No learning curve just for that 5 day camping trip, just restore/use/restore with something familiar... Use that idea with the ROM you're comfortable with and you'll have what you need.
OG does use ext4 and increased VM heap (i know it's just a number in build.prop), so some performance increases. I've always understood that efficiency=lower power consumption for same task.
Thanks for the replies, and for clearing up some questions I had. I was using RoyalGinger 1.4 for the past week, and CM7 RC1 before that. I had recently went back to stock sense, and just flashed Orange, so I had just come off stock. So I was fresh on it. I am liking it so far. While you are here though! What is the difference between Orange Sense, and Orange Glacier? I couldn't really tell from the descriptions.
Sense uses HTC's Sense overlay of froyo, Glacier uses T-Mobile/HTC's MySense overlay, which is what comes stock with the phone.
... Really!!! lol
Just go to radio shak and get a solar USB charger for $25-$55 depending on its internal battery size. They clip on to backpacks and are water resistant ballistic plastic!!! Happy hunting.

Let the phone die then charge it while the phone is off. Once the LED turns green leave it in the charger for another 2 hours or so. The turn it on and download battery calibration app and run that. Do that a couple times and you'll be good!

I just got done with my first full drain on both of my Anker batteries that I purchased, I honestly only bought them because they are a slightly bigger mAh and it came with 2 and a external charger so I could charge both at the same time, this way I can go super hardcore usage all the time, and never fear of battery... I still barely need the second one.. But still it will still depend on what you're needs/expectations from this particular device are.. I don't use a PC for anything.. Since my father does not like me on it, I type school papers on my phone sometimes and everything, so I rely on my phone to be there.
So
maybe just use the phone for a week and gauge what your going to need, also keep an eye on those partial wake percentages found in spare parts, or betterbatterystats on the market (not free :/)
As those wakes amount to some battery wastes.
Hopefully you can sift through this and grab some info any other questions i'm here.

i also heard from a friend who has nice youtube videos on roms and flashing he talked about the MIUI ROMs i red up on them and how they have a custom kernel with built in battery saving tweaks that are applied when installed so cool
also I red that task killers are bad and can mess up phone in long run
i am using CM7.0.3 now what ROM are you using?
i am also on my first drain battery was on zero now its doing the full charge now so after this i should be able to do normal use now with juice defender i hope it works well
but wow you really max your phone what is the mAh on your batteries and how much was it?

I think they are advertised with 1700 mAh ... There right around 1400 but its two of them which is why I got em. I think 26$ for the while thing. Amazon, would you like the link?
Yes TJD's MIUI has a lot of battery improvements, I use that but I just can't get myself to like the MIUI because I guess it is like the iPhone too much. I am currently running CM 7 nighties because I love the cm thing, always have, I like the royal ginger 3.0 but doesn't seem like team royal is on that ship anymore. :/ shame, its a very fast ROM!

thanks those are the ones i was looking at and i think the white ones by Anker are the 1700 mAh the reviews in this alot of people say its 1400mAh I really want a 1700mAh if I am buying lol
and cool i will keep looking into MIUI was there still a big need to get new batteries using that ROM or you just see your battery getting weak period?
and with the battery improvements in MIUI does that mean gaming with cut the rope samurai 2 and fruit ninja will kill battery less?
This morning was last step in the battery calibration and battery is on 94% been on 1 hour and 31 mins with no calling at all just text and one reboot to fix some settings in juice defender I have no data coming to my phone at all till next week when new biling cycle starts but I am not sure if this is a good reading if the battery is good or not not sure
But when I opened setcpu the mhz was up to 1000mhz I had to set it to 768mhz and scaling back to conservative.
wow during this reply 2 texts came in and battery is at 93% not sure what to do I am thinking of recalibrating the battery before either buy a new battery or try MIUI what you think is best?

Always go with the cheapest option first, MIUI, then if you need to get batteries do so.. Yes? I don't pay an extreme amount of attention to percentage, I actually prefer to look at the graphical battery because as long as I have 15% I'll b ok, and it makes it seem like it is going down slower (;
Edit:::: I am at 96% been up since 6AM when I booted up after I took it off the charger, same oc settings as previously mentioned, but in editing this post went down to 95

hey sorry for late replay
and ok cool i will do MIUI tomorrow and recalibration it also lol will do it that day cuz i will see my father and he likes iphones it would b cool to go from CM7 to MIUI in front of his eyes lol but i think i might need a new batrery cuz i am now thinking back and i had a motorla cliq with blur and it was a brand new phone with new batt and all I used the cm7 nightly I loved it just hate the random reboots but battery was beautiful also gaming was cool also
I think but I will get the anker 1700mah
and I didn’t see your oc settings I also red that MIUI doesn’t need to b oc or anything its set automatically
and is your nightlys stable?
Nightly seems stable and I'm at 1700 oc ondemand kernal is TDJ
Miuidoesnt need anything changed

Well, I use Smart Keyboard PRO, because the only people I text are my gf and parents.. I call friends.. so I don't need the speedy responses this helps me pick suggestions way before I type the words. I own Swiftkey but hardly use it, for I lack the time to allow it to learn my style.. swype just doesn't jive with typing in passwords and such. I hardly have problems with SKP have used it since it was Cyril's little project when it debuted.
Now you can download the original android keyboard if you wanted to on the market I think its from Steven Lin or something... what exactly r u looking for in a keyboard?
Yea "Droid does" huh?
If you came from the iPhone I suggest using MIUI as it is like IOS a bit more then AOSP, as I'm sure u can tell.
But that's the beauty of Nandroids, don't like it? Messed up? Restore!

I seriously flashed 4 roms today, two twice since posting my percentage this morning... heavy usage the entire day, texted the entire time, and total of like 10 hours Display time... 100% brightness - 40% and I'm at 38% battery right now after finally subsiding in the CM nightlies again. I guess sense isn't my thing. And the other aosp Roms are all on like 2.3.4
Nightlies r on 2.3.7
So I guess what I'm saying is I can make it thru a whole day with extreme usage
I hope I helped somehow with everything u had a question on so far. Don't hesitate to ask anything else, I am always surfing XDA at school because I lack the interest required for note taking
Edit for typo

it could be the stock screen protecter on but I like smart keyboard pro just that its less responsive then the htc sense keyboard you know the standard keyboard with white hollow oval letter and the predictions are in rectangular oval style above looks smooth would send you a youtube link
But from you telling me your heavy usage plus switching roms I think its my battery I will flash MIUI hopefully today
and see from there and I don’t like sense earlier just feels weird I use launcher pro
And with the nightlys being 2.3.7 how come you find battery better? i am kinda confused i know games kill battery fast but what about calling n internet wifi yesterday those really hurt my battery
Also with my moto cliq I was using nightly as well I might try one do you know a safe nightly that doesn’t random reboot?
And your helping big time you have the same phone and your rooted and alls so I like the info you have shared with me thanks

[Q] Battery useage questions

Finally got my desire z, it came with 2.3.3 unfortunately. So as yet not rooted or anything as I don't have the time just now.
Was just wondering what people's current drain was, mine seems to be around 32mA on standby which shoots up to between 200-350mA with screen on, brightness at 12%.
1. Would this be considered normal for stock?
2. I also am having the dialler high useage issue, tried most of the fixes but still quite high, was this ever resolved properly?
3. Thinking of romming to virtuous sense 2.0 if it will improve the battery drain, can some of you give rough screen off current drain figures please? Especially sense based roms as that's what I would be using.
Thanks.
I used the 1350mAh battery for a long time and then finally caved in to get a Mugen Power 1800mAh. Since then Sense based or not my drain doesn't go below 15% for a full day Wifi (always on), Data (always on - when no WiFi) and Bluetooth on for 6 hours (during travelling).
I would suggest you do the same to get the peace of mind everyone deserves but HTC wasn't caring enough to pack in.
With a 1800mAh battery you don't even have to worry about anything, no matter what you try.
Interesting. It really makes that much of a difference does it?
Where do I get them?

Yup it does, mine is a 1900 mah from chi chi tec
I got my Mugen 1800 from eBay. But you can get it from their website directly. Beware of fakes! If it's too cheap to be true, it is.
Here's a tip, you really don't need much brightness indoors and turn off GPS, wifi when not using it, and screen timeout to like 1 minute.

Way ahead of you, my brightness is always 10% ish, same with gps and wifi, fb every 4 hrs and mails every 6.
I'm now rooted with S-OFF on gingerbread stock. Gonna install cwm and maybe try a different kernel. Any recommendations as to one which will work with stock?
No idea on the kernel, but I really do suggest a bigger battery. I just went back to the stock one for a few days and it was noticeably less.

Just use glite problem solved lol
I'm using bulletproof miui and my standby sits around 28mA with around 150-250 mA regular use. My battery lasts a full day with medium usage (4h screen on, wifi on, 18-20hrs unplugged total). I would say you're sitting a bit high with your battery consumption and could benefit from an undervolted kernel. I have my cpu clocked at 1ghz max these days..
Hope that helps!

I'm thinking my battery just hasn't settled yet as I'm using the battery monitor app and it tells me I'm getting a 32mA draw with screen off but my battery is lasting only around 18 hours with light use and a lot of standby time. For a rough calculation: 1300mAh/32mAh = 39ish hours (standby), deduct 10 hours for messing around, I should be getting at least 24 hours I would think (very rough calculation).
Have only charged it maybe 5 times so far, its probably still being worn in as it seems to drain damn quick on standby at 32mA.
Possibly, do you know your voltage levels for each clock speed? I can get a good 35+ hours with light use and standby at night (~3 hours screen on with wifi connected always)

I'm still on stock just now. Just realised that 'always on mobile data' was on, so I have turned that off as my sync apps will still work and I don't use push email. I'll try that over the next few days and see if it makes a difference as well as the battery getting charged with more cycles to break it in.
If that still leaves it to be desired, then I'm gonna put virtuous sense 2.0.0 on and use underclocking as that made a massive difference with my old wildfire.
What rom are you using bik_jack?
I'm using bulletproof miui but was getting roughly the same voltage numbers with cm7 nightlies before I switched to bulletproof in June.
Both underclocking down to 368mhz with the default undervoltage settings used in tsubus' kernel.

i made a barebones stripped ROM based on the newest tmo OTA, i made optimizations to get better battery life, and stripped tons out to get the most ram possible, and keep the ui fast and snappy.
my newest version 1.3, offers the best battery life in any rom that i have ever used, its super fast (no need for OC), offers the most free ram and is located here :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1324616
give it a try! im sure it will get u more battery life
Of course, now I've realised that my network (3uk) no longer have a 2g contract with orange, so all this setting does for me is stop me receiving txts and calls with it off. Tch. Looks like I will be trying virtuous after all.
The standby battery drain doesn't make sense at all, almost like my battery isn't really 1300mAh.
I use an Anker 1600mAh battery that I got off ebay in my DZ. The seller had a sale of 2 going on for $15, not a bad deal. link to it is here
It's listed for the Incredible 2 / Incredible S, but it seems those batteries are a perfect fit for the Desire Z / G2. Doesn't need any aftermarket casing or modding.
Right now, I am using the ICS beta by tazinator and yesterday I got ~12-13 hours of playing around with it very heavily. My battery can last 22-28 hours with moderate and light use on a normal day.
Sadly, I don't have any if those issues you listed, Dialer usage and such even with CM7. Used to use virtuous sense but went over to AOSP/CM7 instead. Found AOSP being more nicer on the battery, but that's just my feeling - I tend to think Sense drains more battery.
Yeah I think sense is a bit worse on the battery but I've really come to love sense, never really got on with cyanogen roms.
Turns out I was wrong about the data always on and my provider, it all works so I'll keep testing that before I start with roms.
I know mugen batteries are supposed to be good, any other recommendations for brands? I'll check the link out.
UPDATE: If battery monitor is to be believed, my global standby estimate is increasing with every charge, so maybe it is just a case of breaking the battery in. Now at 21.5hrs, I'll continue to monitor the situation, this might also be due to the change of data setting as well.
