I'm happy to say that I'm back on my Samsung Vibrant! The G2 is a great looking phone, and fast at that too. Issues that made me walk away from it....
Hinge was fine when I first got it, but after a few weeks it got really loose.
Force closed on my Apps so many times, it made me wanna toss it out the window a few times.
Rebooted itself at least once a day. This morning it did it 3 times back-to-back. Really?!?!
Can't get a perm root, and it looks like a few are starting to give up on it. I'm sure it'll be rooted, but not any time soon.
I really missed the Vibrant crew. You guys are a bunch of cool Mother F__kers!

I didn't do anything to it at all. I didn't even try to install temp root either. I didn't want to mess with the phone till their was a perm root.
If you go to the G2 forum section, you'll see that a few people had a issues with the phone rebooting on its own. Even when I called T-Mobile about the issue, I was told that they've been getting calls about the issue.

There has definitely been people having issues with the phone rebooting by itself. Sometimes even 3 times in a day like he mentioned. Seen plenty of people on my Twitter timeline complain about it. There seem to be a lot of issues with the phone.

I am on my third G2 with the fourth replacement on the way and so far all have had very similar issues.1.Very very poor to no reception. 2. random rebooting, 3. Black screen freezes. 4. Dropped calls. 5. Loose hinges that keep getting looser. 6. When deploying keyboard apps start randomly. 7. Very difficult to connect to market. 8. Powers itself off on a random basis. I am so Grateful that I still have my Vibrant. So far I would rank it way above the G2. If my fourth one has the same issues and there is no OTA update to fix some of them I will send it back. IMO I believe the Vibrant is the best phone available at this time.

Actually I'm not giving my Vibrant up just yet. Once my G2 gets here I'll have both. I was able to get the G2 new for $200 flat-out (no contract) So I'm gonna keep them both for a while and see what happens. Then maybe I'll sell one

Of all those phones only the HD2 came close in overall performance to the Vibrant...... but not android and what a battery hog- did like the htc sense
What I like about the Vibrant (besides almost everything) it is very forgiving when you brick, I have been able to restore from all screwups I have created within 1 hr.
Within the first 20 min of trying a G2 I knew it was going to be buggy that is why I stayed with this phone

Anyone try the EVO 4G? I wouldn't switch, I was just wondering. I love my vibrant, but my friend is switching because of the hype of 4G and the large screen. I've never tried seen an EVO up close so I'm not sure how good it really is.

Yeah I had the Evo before I got my Vibrant. It's a good phone, but Sprint sucks and the hype of the 4G is complete bull. I got about 4mbps tops on 4G and my Vibrant gets 6.

This thread help me decide somethings. I am kicking Verizon to the curb because of billing issues. I am really looking at T-Mobile. Not sure if I want the Vibrant or HD2. I have a Droid X and now hooked on the 4.3".
Had thought about Evo but know the battery is horrible. I thought of the G2 because of HSPA+ but looks like I need to do the Vibrant or HD2.

Personally I'd rather they get rid of RFS before I worry about Froyo. Faster JIT sounds nice but when your largest bottleneck is the FS, it doesn't matter. It's like driving a Ferrari in a school zone.
I love everything about the phone except the RFS. RFS is an example of companies drinking their kool-aid and wearing their sneakers, with the same result when it comes to plastic bags and breathing.
If you flash Bionix, Master ROM, AOSPish, or Eugene's R4, your phone will run like butter. Like. It's ridiculous how fast this thing is. I can't even stand to use the Nexus One it feels so laggy after witnessing such smoothness on the vibrant.
Other than that. My G2 also went back. It's not worth the hype nor the money. They could have made it AWESOME but no, they made it suck. The Vibrant is THE best phone. It out-performs EVERY phone in both power and slickness. The screen is the best. Once we get Froyo rolling we will be king. Forever. The only comparable/better phone to the Vibrant in smoothness (on menus/swyping screens) is the iPhone 4. But that's Crapple.
As far as the Evo 4g goes, it's ugly, and 4g aka Wimax is ***** **** that can't even touch T-Mobile's 3g itself, let alone HSPA+. My vibrant pulls 6.3mb/s. Sprint's 4g can't do that. Sprint is a joke and should be sued for false advertising
As far as the Droid X goes, it's huge and bulky. I just got one for testing on WQVGA854 screens for my apps. It's a decent device but it is more sluggish than anticipated even on Froyo. My vibrant on 2.1 runs Way smoother than my Nexus, G2, and DroidX combined, and they're all froyo.
The Vibrant is also a lot more slick than the Droid X. The Droid X is huge.
Also, depending on your location of course, T-Mobile is the best and 2nd cheapest (cricket), and most honest *cough*at&t*cough* provider. They have the nicest reps and the fastest 3g.
Vibrant -> ALL.
Vibrant 2.2 ---------------------------> all
Not to mention the Vibrant can get the FFC now as well. HSPA+ is only 8-10MB/s here in Pittsburgh as compared to 6.3MB/s, so it's not THAT big of a difference.

And an unlimited-point touch screen with a QuadrupleSuperAMOLED HD lmao and 1920/1080 resolution... ROFL. Along with T-Mo's 42mb/s HSPA+ when that rolls. Not to mention a Camera button on the same side as the volume rocker and a mini HDMI out on the other side and... blah. Yes I dream.. 10 megapixel camera... records 1080p... a WiFi module with the power of a laptop's... and some real bluetooth compatibility... and a flash on the back camera... Make it Quad Core processor at 3.0GHz too LOL. I've gone too far.
OH and can't forget the quad-speaker setup that it should also have. Two speakers on the back and two speakers on the front. (top/bottom) and a 6800 mAh battery... that lasts like. 2 weeks. And make the touch screen feel like you could almost be touching water. But not wet.
Hahahaha. And. Uh. 1TB mini-SSD internal drive With 8GB/s transfer rate. Boots up in 5 seconds. Would be instant but needs a splash screen

Yeah You are dreaming...and misrepresenting the truth. By the time you get Froyo it will be time to get a new phone. I had the Vibrant for almost 30 days (Cali) sent it back before the remorse period. I rooted it on the first day, the screen is over saturated for my taste (hurts the eyes) and the quality of the phone is plastic and flimsy. The Samsung Epic is a better choice. As for Sprint, I have hit 10+ downloads speeds in the valley and overall they have more coverage (3G) then T-Mobile. The Roms for the Vibrant were sorely insufficient for my taste as well, plus touchwiz is just ugly. Try taking a picture without any light, no video calls, no front camera, no dual led flash= less than Evo or Epic. However, it is slightly behind Nexus and Incredible as far as what it can do. The processor is geared toward gaming, but in other areas it will fall short. Run a linpack on that thing if and when you get Froyo and tell me what you get. You will never get above 20 mflops. So, in that area all the other phones I mentioned are killing the Vibrant.
I returned 2 g2's because of random reboots, so yes that is an issue

I am up for an upgrade in a week and have been weighing my options for a while and am currently leaning towards the Epic, but was hoping to get some insight from the Epic community and hopefully some people that have used both phones. My main concern with the Epic is that of Sammy and their history of not supporting hardware. I still have a bad taste in my mouth over the Instinct(great hardware, terrible software and support). I don't care that much about the home screen part of either or the mail app as I will be using GMail and LauncherPro. One question I have is how many serious and talented linux devs are there that work on the Epic? I know most of the Hero devs went to the Evo. I currently have a Hero running CM6. I like some parts of Sense, but it's performance was a major turn-off and was what made me turn to ASOP. As far as the keyboard goes, I am undecided on whether I will actually like/use it or not. The only thing I see myself using it for is gaming emulators. Another concern is I have heard something about GPS issues, have they been fixed or acknowledged? I am open to input and am truly on the border here. Also, has a root been found for the epic yet? This is a big one for me so that I can at least remove the sprint crapware.
I would say go for the evo. Not long ago I was in the same boat a you. I did a ton off research, and played with both phones extensively. I chose the evo, and it its the most amazing phone I've ever seen. Now that htc uncapped the fps, there is really no problems. The epic is great, but imo the evo is better.

I own both. I prefer the Epic for the keyboard. However, I dislike its screen for late night bed surfing lol. All AMOLEDs are way too bright in the dark.
Couple other noticeable things for me:
Screen: Epic for brightness/colors, however EVO has better responsiveness (assuming hardware/software issue for Epic)
Screen FPS: Epic, but they just released official fix for EVO
Text input: Epic since it has hardware keyboard in addition to touch
Battery life: EVO hands down, my Epic seems to die too fast and I never used any type of battery saving application on EVO
Power button location: Blows on Epic, why did they put it on the side??
Phone Size: Epic is lighter and smaller
ROM Development: EVO because its a HTC device, but I hope this changes soon
And I'd go with the Epic. I got my girlfriend her first smartphone 3 months ago and got her the Evo. Played with it for a few weeks and definitely liked the phone. Then I came up for an upgrade and I had the same decision to make. I ended up chosing the Epic as it seems it is a fewer months older and has a few slight upgrades over the Evo, but not much.
The Epic screen is ridiculously amazing. They do NOT compare. I love having a hard keyboard, and I text a lot more because of it. It's been two phones and about 3 years since I had a keyboard, but I picked it right up and my fingers flew.
Touchwiz is very nice, but I got rid of it after a few days, well actually the 3rd day once I rooted. I did the same with Sense on my Hero, like it, but I rather go completely customizable with a custom launcher.
Another great thing about the Epic is the notificatoin settings bar. You can adjust a few settings like wifi, 4g, bluetooth, brightness and airplane mode all from the pull down bar. And it even works without Touchwiz, which was a surprise to me. This feature alone gives me a big vote for epic over evo.
It seems the Epic's cpu runs a little faster/more efficientyly than the Evo's. The battery life on both is about what you can expect, if you use it a lot, plan on charging it during the day. Are you into rooting and getting the most out of your phone? Then you can get extensively better battery duration.
Right now, there isn't a lot of extra stuff you can do on a rooted Epic, but the phone's only been out a few weeks and the Evo has a jumpstart on developmental stuff. Also, the Evo is already on 2.2 where the Epic is still on 2.1, although rumors have it getting 2.2 in the next month.
Gps issue is definitely a problem on the Epic. I use my GPS about 5 times a day as I travel to different sites for my job. There is a delay in getting a good lock, but there should be a fix for this soon, and it's not as bad as everyone makes it out to be. I usually get a lock within a minute. But I'll be happy when I get that instantaneous lock again.
One thing the Evo definitely has on the Epic is a bit bigger screen, .3", and HDMI out. That function is disabled on the Epic for some reason. I've heard a few reasons, but who knows. I use the DLNA option instead as my TV is new enough to support it.
I came from 3 generations of HTC phones before this, so it was hard for me to leave HTC. In the end, either way you're getting an awesome phone. so good luck with this decision!

I own both and would say EVO hands down. I thought the physical keyboard would be for me as that was the hardest to get used to on my EVO but after using both extensively I'd get the EVO. Where a few people like being able to adjust wifi/bluetooth and whatnot from the upper status pulldown, on the EVO it's a widget called "Power Control". To me this gives the same ease. Having both the EVO and the EPIC side by side I wouldn't say the EPIC screen blows away the EVO. Colors seem more blue on the EPIC and amoled is nice but I'd take my EVO any day for the .3 larger screen + it doesn't look bad at all.
Now if you're HEAVY into games and that's the main purpose for your phone then I'd recommend you get the EPIC. GPS isn't as big of an issue as people make it out to be BUT that being said there's been a few times when I needed it *now* and was waiting for about 3-5 minutes which I am sorry is NOT cool. The EVO locks on almost instantly, and most places I have tried indoor as well (obviously in a concrete office building it's not going to work... but at home in my bedroom it works fine).
I would suggest that you go to a Sprint store and really play with both for ~20 minutes each...

Having owned, and done extensive reviews and research on both I can conclude that the Epic's camera is much better than the Evos. The saturation, contrast, and white balance are all superior. Not to mention the video camera is only bested by the iPhone4.
I owned the Evo b4 the Epic. I liked the Evo, because the development for the device is amazing. The kickstand on the Evo is also great and comes in handy. Now that the 30fps caps is removed, it is even a greater phone.
I chose the Epic for a smaller form factor in phone size. I had to use two hands to use the Evo and my fingers would not reach across the screen without touching my skin. The Evo camera is not as good as the Epic, 23 fps vs 29/30fps at a constant rate. I like have an option of a physical keyboard to use only *if* I am typing a long email, playing a emulator or just getting tired of using the on screen keyboard. The AMOLED screen pwns the LCD screen and the Epics GPU is amazing, I run everything smoothly on my Epic.
In my opinion they are both great phones, but if you prefer a bigger form factor and a great development scene go for the Evo. If you prefer a great overall device that has everything built in for a phone then choose the Epic.

The EVO can't shoot HD video in low light situations. It goes at around 10-15 FPS. It's blurrier during the day. It over saturates the colors. The 8MP on the camera is totally pointless because the quality of the camera doesn't measure up.
My Epic takes much better pictures than my EVO. But regardless... there are far MORE IMPORTANT reasons to get a phone.

Apparently you haven't used cm6 on the EVO. IT does wonders for the camera and does things that no other camera app does as of yet; touch to focus while in camcorder mode....I get 24ish fps in 720p in low light with cm6.
Look, I own both, they both have their pros/cons but NEVER ever would I say one owns the other. It almost like Mac vs. PC they both do some things well....and others not so well.
Epic, is my vote, root is already out. Out of the box, epic is so much better. I still have my evo, but I never pick it up.

My pick is the Evo. I got the Epic at launch, but it never felt right for me. I was also annoyed at the current bugs, which I can confirm it has. I just didn't have faith in Samsung to come out with a fix for them all, especially in my 30 window.
I returned it for the Evo and was amazed how much more I liked the Evo. Just feels like the better phone imo. Battery life is much better on the Evo than the Epic for me too.

Either one you pick you wil be happy. I ended up going with the epic for the better screen, better processor and gpu and the keyboard. Even though im starting to use the screen keyboard alot more now that i installed the droid x keyboard.. i take the train to work everyday so i watch movies and play games on a daily basis.. and despite the screen size disadvantage the epic has.. movies look so much better.. and believe me i've tried both

Agreed! They are both good machines(?), err phones. As I said in an earlier post, it'd be stupid to not go to Sprint and really play with both for like 10-20 minutes each. Download quadrant, neocore, your favorite app(s), etc., etc. and run it all on both and make an informed decision. Most Sprint employees (around were I live) recommend the EVO, that said, don't let a sales person sway you one way or another.

I plan on it. I have been to best buy twice, but for some reason in their great wisdom they only have mockups so you cant play around with them. I am going to buy it at best buy so I get my reward points and better returns.
I have both, bought Evo, really liked it, but when the Epic came out, tried it, loved it, gave Evo to hubby.
Handsize and feel is important to me, the Epic fits hand better, buttons are in more convenient place for one hand usage, Love Swype, love screen, rooted but staying with Touchwiz because its so smooth (and waiting for 2.2
before I mess with other roms). The pics are awesome, as are some of the apps, especially Google Sky. It actually runs a little faster than Evo in opening apps.
Now hubby loves Evo, bigger feel in hands, screen, but to me, colors look more washed out. However, he is color blind so can tell no difference.
I came from rooted Hero, so like Touchwiz better than Sense. Its a comfort zone, they are both great, play with them, if we didn't have two to chose from, everyone would like the one choice they have.
P.S. My only wish would be no keyboard on Epic and thinner, never use it with large on screen keyboards and Swype.
Well I've been showing my phone off tio my friends and most of them say they think the new mytouch is better than the vibrant and some guy thinks his ipod touch 2g is better because his pocket pond app has better graphics

3. You can mod a ffc onto the vibrant if you really want it...but there really aren't too many practical uses for it right now anyway.
The vibrant is by far still a better device imo.

I do think Vibrant is a better choice, even though the Snapdragon 2nd Gen processor in HTC phones (G2 and MyTouch 4G) is a beast on its own, but if it weren't for somewhat childish looks of MTG4 and the fact that you cannot mod the damn thing (only temp root, and no RW access to NAND) makes it a bit of a downer.

Will you have to get the official update to get flash? I'm running Eugene's froyo and my phone won't receive any updates at all for other reasons so if i can't get flash that would suck.

From a majority consumer point of view, the MyTough3g is better.
FFC isn't a niche device, it's pretty mainstream considering you can now chat with people who use Yahoo Messenger from your Android phone if it has a FFC. Don't really care about Qik, but Yahoo is very much in use in the world. I suspect Windows Live Messenger will debut this feature quite soon with some Windows Phones coming out with FFCs.
The phone is snappier. Doesn't have the crappy RFS file system. The GUI looks good, and the Speech recognition works great. Doesn't feel like a paper plate in you hands, either (though I've added a cover to my vibrant to put some weight on it).
The Vibrant is a good device but the software (and I've heard FroYo doesn't really change much, outside of the fact that it's FroYo and yes I do need some of the features in FroYo so I welcome it) is terrible and some of the ommisions are just mind-boggling. No LED on front for notifications, for example. No Flash. GPS that still doesn't work correctly for half the people who have it. Slow as hell file system that makes the phone unusable from time to time. Less Application RAM than an HTC Aria. The GPU really doesn't matter because Android 2.1/2.2 still doesn't have a gfx accellerated GUI and Windows Mobile 6.5 has more games than Android (more games that you're bother installing, that is).
HTC also typically has an HTC Sync application for their phones, which makes managing them much easier than Galaxy S in the US (no Kies for us).
TBQH, I'm tired defending this phone. I wonder when others will get tired of it (prolly never on this forum, people still call the HD2 the greatest phone on earth here). This device is being completely overshadowered by other offerings and the only reason why it sold so well on AT&T/T-Mobile/Sprint is because:
1. T-Mobile didn't have anything else worth buying in the range of high end smartphones (HD2 not an option for most people with it's OS and problematic reputation)
2. AT&T Doesn't have much other high end smartphonts other than Palm Pres and the Torch that just came out with the Captivate (the Pre and Torch feel more mid-range compared to iOS/Android devices, and there was the Aria as well in that space).
3. Sprint had so many issues with Evo backorders/issues that customers had no issue but to get something else. They have no other good phones. Their Pres are 1st gen and no one wants a Touch Pro 2 or Hero, Lol...
How that there are other good phones coming out... I wouldn't expect much.
Not everyone is a power user. My mom doesn't cry about not being able to jailbreak her Blackberry and when she had a WinMo phone she didn't even install an app on it. She just used it as a phone/txt device (basically as a feature phone). The temp-root issue is only an issue for a very small minority of users - so it isn't even an issue at all in the grand scheme of things.

And I'm at a loss as to the above posters issues. This is my third android phone, and it us by far the fastest happiest android device I've used. My last phone, the Nexus one, although sexy, would need a reboot at least once a day to keep it snappy.
And I live the size if included internal memory is the Vibrant. No need for special hacks to get files on SD.
The Vibrant, for me, is a fantastic phone.
And yes, can't wait for the banding issue to be resolved for the FFC.
Oh, and it doesn't need a flash. It takes better pictures in low light conditions without one, than other phones that have a flash
Well, the one thing that is unmatched on the Galaxy S line is the amazing screen. Sorry, but I can't go back to LCD or plain AMOLED after this. After all, you use the screen more than any other feature on a smartphone.
As for the other things, it all depends on what's important to you. GPS works great for me now. FFC would be nice, but not necessary for me. As for flash? Meh, LED flash is barely adequate as a solution.
Personally, I picked the Vibrant because aside from the core smartphone functions, I wanted a phone that could also replace my old iPod. So for me, having 16gb of built-in memory was more important than even having a camera, much less a flash.

My First Impression Of The MyTouch 4G:
The screen on the MyTouch 4G is much higher in resolution. You can barely see pixels. The MyTouch 4G produces real whites, the SuperAmoled produces green/blue whites. However the SAMOLED has a much better contrast ratio, meaning colors pop since blacks are much darker.
The 3.8 inch screen is too small for me
The Build Quality of the 4G seems to be good.
The GPU seemed slower than the Vibrants PowerVR.
The CPU is faster on the 4G.
Now here is the odd part. I must admit I've noticed the same thing with the G2.
Both the G2 and the Mytouch 4G are HSPA+, while the Vibrant is not. However, side by side, running speedtest app. The vibrant EVERY SINGLE TIME had both higher download and upload speeds. It just doesn't make sense. Side by side, the Vibrant got almost 6mbps download. MyTouch 4G best it could do was 3mbps. Same with the G2, I don't get it.

Every phone has its fanbois. I just left T-Mo and played with an HD7.
Vinrant fells like an 8088 PC-XT compared to that. Only way to think this phone is snappy is to have only used worse phones.

Me and my roomate both had our Vibrants in the store. We were astonished by the difference, just in scrolling form home screen to home screen. The Vibrants were obviously laggy doing something trivial. The Windows phone just blew through everything. The UI is beyond polished. The minimalist look definitely works well.
Microsoft definitely took the best route short of developing their own phones: Lock down the hardware and focus on doing what you do best - software ~ namely the OS and all the device drivers. Google should take note, or Android will suffer (although I'm sure it will be prevalent in the low-mid range device market, since Nokia isn't that big a player - at least in the US).
We played with the MyTouch 4G. The phone itself is ugly and I'm not a fan of screens < 4". It has some Sense elements in it which = update churn like 90% of other Android phones. The G2 performed decently but it has a whole host of problems. If you haven't experienced that ****ty hinge I implore you to go to a T-Mobile store and play with it. The minute the phone is perpendicular to the floor the phone starts closing (more like slamming) on you. That makes the phone unusable for me if I'm lying in bed and using it (as I often do before I go to bed). I guess something like an Epic 4G or Droid 2 wouldn't have that issue, though. That hinge was a terrible idea, Lol.
Oh, and did I mention the touchscreen keyboard on WP7 is /drools/ worthy.
I can't see myself getting any other Android Phone again.
If you get a phone with a UI on it that looks decent it is bound to come with hoards of issues and update churn. If you get a stock phone the built quality is pure crap and/or half the space is taken up to lock the phone down instead.
In any case, I heard FroYo for Galaxy S in the U.S. is supposed to be coming Nov. 11 on Facebook from "Samsung Galaxy S."
I heard Galaxy S performance is still below acceptable with FroYo, though... Some people are reporting regressions.
i just picked up the new mt4g. i have two phone lines (one for my work) and will probably keep both phones. i will need to use the mt4g for a couple of weeks go form a complete review/opinion on the phone v. the vibrant.
the mt4g is very solid and very snappy considering all the bloatware. with its HTC Espresso UI, the interface isn't for every body. Just like HTC sense it does a huge amount of social integration, moreso than the vibrant. And just like HTC sense you have pre-set "themes" you can load in terms of personal and business preferences.
it's screen is super crisp but no where near as "vibrant" as our vibrant phones. in terms of gaming, i haven't compared the two yet as i'm sure the mt4g can handle them well to a certain extent vs. the vibrant being that it's a second gen snapdragon. but i'm sure in terms of rendering and graphic display, it won't match the vibrant. i'll probably compare the gaming and video playback between the two later this week.

There's been no announcement or even real rumor of the sort, unfortunately.
The only thing that's confirmed is "by the end of the year".
If the mytouch had at least a 4" screen I would get it. That being said, I'm looking forward to the android version of the Dell Venue Pro

Main Points:
Weight and size are not an issue: Glass screen is a +
Price is not an issue.
Standard Mini USB charging is a +
Battery life is not so important.
Texting Speed is 100% most important item - my hero can not keep up with my fingers and it is beyond frustrating.
I know this is the Epic forum so I can't say I don't expect you to be bias, but it would be nice to hear anything at all. Just wanted to hear how the phones compare as BOTH rooted devices with all speed benefits.
As of now the epic has an issue where it will miss keys on the physical keyboard every so often. Txlexting speed is also very important to me (I have an epic) and I have been dissappinted with the physical keyboard to say the least. That being said, the evo does not even have a physical keyboard and you could use any keyboard from the evo on the epic. The app "Smart keyboard" is the best of all that I have tried. The screen on the epic is also substantially better than the evo. The evo gets updates before the epic because it is an htc phone so that is always something to consider. Good luck.

If you fancy yourself with modding then an Evo is a clear cut winner. There are much more Roms, Mods, and source codes are always released first for HTC phones. Samsung has a history of not really supporting their devices. Epic is no exception. Actually, I completely forgot to mention, I don't know that I would use the keyboard much anyway. I guess if it was there, I may start to use it, but I like the touch screen keyboard, I'm quite fast with them. In fact I still use T9 a LOT, especially while I'm driving. So as far as the keyboard goes, not a huge pro/con for me. When I mention texting speeds, I just want the phone to be able to keep up with me. My experience with the HTC hero is bad in the sense that I'll be waiting every few words for the phone to catch up so I can check for errors before continuing to type.

Great news. I've been leaning towards the evo... looks like it's decided. Thanks again MLHickey.
Last note is, should I wait for early 2011 in case HTC releases something crazy. I mean, I can live on my HTC hero a few more months if I need to.
Just thought as an epic owner Im obligated to reply. The choice is a hard one, but the epic is faster, a better screen (even if slightly smaller) and since its basically stock android doesnt need roms like cynagen to be super fast and its only slightly thicker then the evo. You also get better battery life on the epic.
As for the keyboard, its really not that bad, and a keyboard is better then nothing at times when touch typing just isnt working out as planned.
I had the same hard decesion and luckily when I was visiting home a few weeks ago I got to play with my parents evo. Don't let the benchmarks fool you, the epic is much faster, plus that screen, you get size shock from the evo, but color and contrast shock from the epic. Plus you can install htcs awesome on screen keyboard on the epic. Its the best of all worlds in my book. The evo will have faster updates though, but really.. updates are almost superficial because by time android 2.2 is unsupported should they stop there you will likely be getting a new phone. Gps might or might not work better on the evo, some epics are fine, others aren't.
Just my 2 cents.

But what about Epic's ugly azz cool color temperature?! Whites look grey on it, screen has blue tint... sorry, photographer coming out in me, but Evo's colors are much more accurate.

I'm not tryna sound biased but u gotta be kidding me.. maybe ur gf's usage is much higher.. honestly 4 of my friends have evo's and whenever we're chilling on either of our houses, they fight over the charger.. although my epic is rooted and has custom rom+kernel and their evo doesn't but even b4 i rooted mine i had much better battery life..
The keyboard on this thing is not great, but it beats having none. WPM will not be high with this keyboard, although accuracy is not bad. Still, coming from a Hero, I really like having a keyboard now.
The main gripe is Samsung's poor support, small ROM, and the gps on this thing.
If you text a lot, this should still be your choice as it is faster than virtual keyboards.

No. I have asked about the Evo's battery life and I quite frequently hear it hardly makes it through the day from people who DO own them. I've had mine unplugged with moderate use and plenty of calls since 7am and its at 40% right now at 11PM. Now to be fair.. my Epic is rooted with the battery sucking processes from Sprint/Samsung cut out, the Evo's i've heard about are stock. If both were rooted you'd probably cut similar results.
They both have 1500MAH batteries, they will both be roughly the same if you cut the fat out of each I imagine.
As for the screen, yeah the colors are not as accurate, but you're not going to notice, they have a cooler look to them which bothers the heck out of graphics designers and the like heh heh but really.. it's still stunning in comparison to the evo, but thats just MY opinion.
You really need to go into the Sprint store and play with both as much as you can.... you really can't go wrong with either of them and their pro's and con's split pretty evenly.
1) for the keyboard issue..try disabling Swype and use the hardware kb.
2) Epic even with the custom roms we have is doing fairly well...I mean take all the custom roms on the EVO and the Epic and you'll notice there isn't too much difference...most of the advantages EVO had was gotten from the Nexus One which hopefully we will get from the Nexus S.
3) You can do a bunch with custom roms on the EVO to make it run smoother but It'll never run as smooth as the epic.
4) The colors can't be more accurate on the EVO because its only 64k colors..if anything Droid X has probably the most accurate colors...but since EVO is only 64k colors it won't be accurate...the Super AMOLED tends to be mroe blue because the blue dies out the fastest...over time it balances itself out...on my device though if I set it to 100% brightness its white as I lower the brightness it turns grayish..but thats what lowering brightness is suppose to do...
5) Yeah.. texting while driving is bad...
6) Battery life varies by your usage..overall though if you configure it best you can on both devices Epic will win.

i had to read that twice, he wasnt talkin about you only having two cents... he was referring to owning both phones... just kinda seemed like u took that the wrong way...
Personally, I never got to actually play around with an evo but I will say these things about my epic:
The keyboard, though sometimes annoying, is a great bonus to have for those who text/email/im/fb/whatever a lot. And you can bring the htc keyboard over to the epic as well.
The battery life on custom roms/kernels seems to be better when compared to most evo scenarios (I don't have an evo so don't quote me)
The color temps can be fixed using voodoo color.
The phone DEFINITELY responds better to user input than the evo, hands down (probably due to the evo having so much bloat, and also due to the better built cortex processor)
Updates on the evo happen more quickly, this is very true. But our devs have done a great job fixing MOST of our major issues.
This is a big one that people seem to be failing to mention. The new froyo modems seem to FIX gps PERMANENTLY. I've been running wifi on my epic for days without a reboot and gps is on hot start (not using the cold start workaround) and every time I get a full lock within seconds (using gps status).
All in all, I love my epic and the way it runs thanks to our community, but if you want a more reliable manufacturer (and a community that isn't chock full of spoiled brats who's parents bought them the phone), go with the evo.
If you can deal with the slower updates and the forum nonsense, go with the epic.

I wonder how many kids actually are on these forums when I was 12 I wasn't looking for ways to hack my cell phone... then again when I was 12 I think that Motorola "flip" phone that looked like something outta star trek was the most popular one for being so "portable". lol

My upgrade comes through on March 1st.. I've looked into each of these phones with great detail. This is what I've come up with in a nutshell. And I want everyone's professional opinion as ill be using this phone for a year or two.. thx guys and gals..(is there a girl on xda yet? ;p)
Stock pros of shift: pocket friendly, higher quality exterior, possibly more support on xda, I heart HTC.
Stock pros of epic 4g: better battery life, amoled screen, front facing camera, video card for twice the gaming potential
Both are 99.00 on Amazon with upgrade eligibility (so is the evo, but I don't need a tablet just yet, 4" is quite enough for me) .. I use sprint im not switching its cheap.. I'd rather have a steak then slightly improved cell service. I have wifi at home anyways..

My wife has a shift and I have an Epic. Her phone is more stable and her camera takes noticeably better pictures. The keyboard is also better on the shift as sometimes the keys skip on the Epic. As far as froyo is concerned it is much more stable on the Shift as well.
When on the shift section of xda I noticed a lot of people got the phone for their wives and not for themselves. They say games don't run as smoothe on the shift such as psx rom.games. and there is no phone on the market that I've layed my hands on that has a prettier screen than the epic. The colors are just plain and simply better. The phone isn't the eye catcher the epic is
I would go personally with the Epic in hopes of sprint and Samsung getting their act together and fixing the numerous bugs that are associated with it. You'll definetely have a love hate relationship with the epic but I believe in the long run you'll be better off with it.

At this point id say wait for the next round of phones as there'll be dual core options. Also, my gil has the evo and i the epic and they are about the same size overall, not too much difference.

If you can wait for the next round of phones I would, since they'll probably be out this summer. If you can't, the Epic is a good phone. I'm currently on EB 13 and I did a fresh install and then loaded all of my apps manually. There's still problems with the sport mode in the camera, Time without signal (TWS) being high unless you do the airplane mode toggle, and the camcorder being a little sluggish in low light. These aren't deal breakers for me, because I don't really use the phone for low light recordings or sport mode and I'm fine toggling the airplane mode. However, it would be nice to have this fixed. I haven't experienced any of the other bugs people have claimed, so I'm still very happy with the performance of EB 13, but I'm not holding my breath for a fix. I mainly stay on EB 13 because the battery life for me is drastically better than 2.1 and the performance is no worst than 2.1. The screen is a lot better as well.
Like I said before, I hope they fix the problems, but I wouldn't buy a phone assuming they will......
IMO, it all boils down to this..
If you want a KB, get the Epic, if you don't get the EVO
The EVO shift is simply not a high end phone, no matter how it was marketed.
It is not a matter of speed, but just a lack of to many high end features.
I would really say it boils down to you really wanting to mod it I have an epic and I've been pretty happy with having it rommed to froyo until. Although some of the hardware glitches or software do kinda get annoying. I still think it's pretty descent.
The shift I'm assuming is a descent phone as well and I heard the keyboard is way better then epic, so it really comes down to preference I really think.
Best advice I can say is go to the sprint store and play with both of them for about 30 minutes, like literally 30 minutes.
I own both. Epic has a nicer screen and is faster for games. Shift seems to be better for literally everything else.
But if you like to tweak endlessly, Epic may be more your speed.
Epic by a gazillian times. The screen is simply amazing! And the gpu screams. Along froyo with ext filesystem, it even beats the super dual core tegra Atrix phone. Trust me... Epic is hands down best. I owned a Evo and a shift. Both underperform compared to Epic.

The shift is something I would recommend to my grandma. though i wouldn't recommend a android phone to any tech impaired person( as my grandma is, fuuuu dont even get me started.)
From what it seems, the Shift is a less expensive/toned-down alternative to the Epic and Evo. So you're more or less comparing two differently classed phones.
Also, I love the keyboard on the epic. It's very roomy and comfortable, especially with its five rows. Plus, the Super AMOLED screen is gorgeous and a serious selling point. And regarding support on XDA, the Epic has nearly 10 times more threads and posts in each sub-forum.
I've never actually owned a Shift, but just from the numbers it seems the Epic is a much better deal, especially since they are the same price on Amazon. But waiting for Sprint's next lineup of Android phones seems like a good choice as well.

Not sure if it makes a difference to you or not, but thete is now a fix fir the cameta issues in eb13. Keepin' the faith that sprint will release a more stable update soon. In the mean time get the epic and trust in the great devs we have here.

Shift out performs evo.. epic has it beat on the graphics end. at least according to benchmark apps. I think I'm going to go with the shift for now... ill just add another line late this summer to try and get another phone..

I've had the Epic and the Evo, not the Shift tho. But I've played with the Shift for a while and one thing that surprises me is HOW HEAVY it is! For the weight difference, I'd almost just get the Epic. Regardless... if you want a billion ROM's that's hard to decipher and just really be confused most of the time, get an HTC. Tho, I will say their stock ROM's hand Samy's rear to them. The build quality on all three phones I would say are on par with each other.
The GPS on the Evo is AMAZING! I ALWAYS get a quick lock (within 5-10 seconds of opening up maps), and after 15-20 seconds, it's accurate to 3m (9 feet!), the Epic, not so much. After about 30 seconds, it'd lock, and only be accurate to 20m (60 feet!?!). As for using navigation on the phone, again, I would buy a garmin or tom-tom before I'd use the Epic's navigation.
Bottom line, yeah, if you need a phone that just works, any HTC is the way to go. BUT, the screen, size of keyboard, how good it plays games, did I mention the screen quality? are unmatched on the Epic. Hardware-wise (beyond maybe the GPS), the Epic is unbeaten.

Untrue. Stop using Quadrant and Linpack (outdated benchmarks that are optimized for Snapdragon) and you'll see that it is simply not the case.
MHz for MHz, the Qualcomm MSM SoCs are slightly more powerful than the Hummingbird, but at 800 MHz they still fall behind the 1 GHz S5PC110.

Shift is good, but the epic is on a whole other level, in terms of hardware. Stock the shift has the better software, but if your going to mod your phone with some of the awesome xda dev software.......that's where you'll see what I mean by being on a whole other level. Don't wait to long to trade your new shift in and get a real upgrade
My sister will give me her upgrade if I give her my Captivate. I use Cog 4 currently and I am happy with the device except gps.
If anyone jumped from Captivate to Atrix, what are your thoughts.
I'm also debating on just waiting for GS2 for AT&T.

try the official froyo update, from what i have read the gps works.
if it doesn't and it's important to you then get the atrix.
otherwise keep your cappy and wait for the galaxy S 2 or something else
I'm in the same boat, and from what I've been reading in these forums, people don't seem all that incredibly happy with the Atrix. I'm planning on waiting for the Galaxy S 2 myself. I don't know if I can deal with a non-SAMOLED screen now that I've had one!
I have the Atrix and the Captivate. I am happier with my Captivate than with my Atrix. Although I do like the power the Atrix has but I prefer the media support for the Captivate and I prefer Amoleds to the Atrix's display. Download speeds are disappointing too, considering it's supposed to be 4g. The Captivate gets faster speedtest results. Atrix's Hd video playback for mkv files is really choppy and embarrasing for a dual core phone. My recommendation would be to hold out for the S2. Quadrant scores aren't that impressive considering a single core Nexus S is on par with the Atrix. Quadrant Score for Atrix is in the 2500s where as the Nexus S was in the low 2000s untouched. I'm trying to give the Atrix a fair trial, but for now it seems as though it will be returned. I'll be waiting for the S2 or the Infuse.

Im returning my atrix. Im running serendipity 5.11 on my cap and I noticed that motoblur is far slower than my cap, I use launcher pro also. I don't care about the screen (its a phone and its plenty crisp an image, I have a laptop and a desktop for quality.)
I didn't test the gps. I thought the camera over all wasn't as good as the cap, but thays probably a software issue not hardware. Though its disappointing that companies (samsung included) release these phone and advertise and price them as the next best thing while including hardware, I.e. camera sensor, That has been around for a while already and is subpar to some phone that are a year old already.
It obvioulsy performs tasks quicker than the captivate because of the dual core, but I don't see the benefits yet, I can wait.
I will wait until there are hacks if I really want it but for now the price att wants does not support the benefits. The real reason to get one is the dock and they've made that so expensive and trying to call it tethering using the dock when its all phone is dumb. I was told buy my friends at att tell me I can't keep my unlimited and add tethering either.(edit, clarify, I can't add tethering if I want to keep my unlimited plan, its one or the other)
Over all, im not impressed. But im sure it will get better with updates. Im gonna stick it out for a while with the cap and see what happens. I may give the new htc one a go first, its not faster than the cap, but its got a bigger screen and camera sensor so....

Yeah, it really is that simple. Cappy is a little slimmer and lighter and has a nice bright screen--but who cares if the GPS will never work? And after two or three bogus fixes were issued and announced...who wants to wait and see?
And for the first time in all these years...a phone I've bought HAS A MESSAGE LIGHT! I can't tell you how nice a litle perq that is. Cappy doesn't have it.
Now, if they'd only put in a hole for a tether cord, because I'm often in places where a phone really doesn't want to get dropped.

I have had 3 Captivates since they were released, and now I have an Atrix and Nexus One. Guess what, the Atrix is the best of all those. The Captivate is simply a garbage device, no way around it. No LED flash, no front facing camera, no LED notification, garbage GPS, slower, comes with trash TouchWiz, etc.

While I loved my Captivate, I must agree with you. Even with the best custom ROM for GPS (Paragon 6), GPS is hit or miss. Side by side, my wife's iPhone 4 and my Samsung Focus get a GPS lock much faster than the Captivate in difficult situations (indoors, cloudy day etc). I hope that the Atrix is better at this.
Another issue with the Captivate was battery life, which I hope the Atrix will be better at. Cheers.

The gps with Cog 4 is so much better than it has ever been since the Captivate came out. It locks on pretty quick and it's pretty accurate on location as well. My gps never worked until now.

Yep. Regardless of ROM, my GPS on every Captivate I have owned has been entirely broken. 10+ minutes in an open parking lot, no signal lock. Atrix locks in my car in 5 seconds.
I made the same change from the Captivate to Atrix. Overall I've had a good experience with the Atrix. My biggest complaint at this point is Moto Blur. It's just crap. IF you decide to get the Atrix just be prepared for the different screen. The Amoled screen is better than the screen on the Atrix. I do miss that a little bit. But then I dock it on the Lapdock and forget all about it
I got an atrix on day one on day two i boxed it back up am taking it back monday. After samoled i cold not take that screen. It was simply horrible to me. I am going to wait to see what samsung, htc, and apple bring out this summer.

Hmm; have you compared the two side by side? The Atrix is a lot clearer and has a higher resolution.

Atrix is a wonderful experience, especially compared to the Captivate which was horrible, especially after loading in all of my apps the Captivate just froze with everything....the Atrix flies! Get Launcher Pro and forget Motoblur, it sucks.
I thought about it. I work for the Shack an get a pretty good discount on the atrix but I am simply in love with my captivate. Love the amoled. Love the huge selection of custom roms. The phone is extremely snappy running paragon. I am just 100% satisfied with the captivate.

What about someone coming from a uk dhd, nexus s.... then a telus dhd.... my current desire hd, having hspa.... is great IMO, battery life could be better, but I have an extra battery...
Oh well, it will be here in 10 days, I guess that will decide all... but it is going to have to be great.... to make me ditch my dhd running cm7!
I'm torn in this decision too. I currently have a Nexus One and a Captivate. I was really thinking of selling the Captivate and getting either the Inspire or the Atrix. I messed around with both for about an hour and can honestly say I was a little let down by the Atrix. I really want to like this phone but I personally think the screen compared to the Captivate is just plain dull. Yeah, it has a higher res screen and I can appreciate that. BUT, the colors on the SAMOLED have spoiled me. I don't know what to do. The performance with a live wallpaper on my friend's Atrix was, frankly, pretty dang lousy for a phone that everyone has been raving about in terms of its speed. With a regular wallpaper the phone is certainly faster but it still didn't just blow me away. Also, the plastic build materials left a sour taste. Again, I really want to like this phone. I guess I'll check it out again and maybe have a change of heart. Anyone else think the way I do as far as the screen?
