[DEV HELP] Voodoo on Captivate JI6 - Captivate Android Development

If you frequent the i9000 forums, you should know by now that the awesome Supercurio has released voodoo5 lagfix for Froyo. Unlike the previous versions of the fix, this one does not require a recompiled kernel. As noted by the post from the man himself, the fix is applied by injecting the necessary script into a ramdisk. He did not have time to do this for the Captivate JI6 kernel, but I would love for someone to take the 2e recovery kernel, and add the voodoo script into it. If someone can provide instructions on how to unpack the ramdisk out of the zImage, edit it, and then repack it, I would be glad to attempt it, but this would most likely be a lot easier for someone who has done this before. Can we have some voodoo to go with our froyo please?

The script to extract the initramfs errors out:
Code:
[email protected]:~/Desktop/intramfs/kernel_repacker$ ./extract.sh zImage
: No such file or directory
)(start = ting kernel image from zImage
: command not found8:
dd: invalid number `\r'
gzip: stdin: unexpected end of file
grep: /tmp/kernel.img: No such file or directory
./extract.sh: line 40: syntax error: unexpected end of file
Is there another way to extract the initramfs?

what did you do exactly?

downloaded the voodoo kernel for Froyo and updated thru Odin, I am running Shep211's rom

also keep in mind i have only tested calling and speed on the phone, I havent tested GPS and I havent been in motion yet with the phone to see what cell reception is like.

Running an i9000 kernel on a Captivate means rotation will be off 90 degrees, and there will be issues with buttons (volume buttons reversed, home and back buttons mixed up). You will also have issues in not being able to select items in recovery mode.

issues
ok, here are some issues.
1. plugged in headset doesnt work, bluetooth does
2. cant get off of call screen when on a call, soft buttons dont work.

Thanks, going to flash back...was worth a shot..

any movement on getting it ported to Captivate?

Tried the voodoo fix
when i flashed it to my phone, the back and home buttons would not work, the rotation was completely off, there was a really bad lag between screens. that was as far as i got. i odin-ed my phone and reinstalled the unofficial froyo. i realize that the voodoo fix was not made for the captivate yet but i thought i would give it a try. i can wait for it to be coded for the captivate.

Cappy Froyo JI6 Kernal on I9000 Froyo JPK - SEE 1st POST FIRST

---Edit--- 10/08/2010, 10:18PM, CST
This thread is now obsolete - see: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=8530907&posted=1#post8530907
Great job Shep!!
---Edit--- 10/07/2010, 8:57PM, CST
A few of the guys have taken it on themselves to work through the issues by cooking up a custom I9000 JPK based ROM using JI6 framework, deodexed, etc. Stay posted...
---EDIT--- 10/06/2010, 10:47AM, CST
See page 23, post 224 for my most recent combo try that seemed very stable, other than the occasional TW crash.
---EDIT--- 10/04/2010, 10:25PM, CST
I've decided to bail from this experiment due to:
1) TW crashes;
2) Bluetooth mic issues.
Thanks to everyone that participated and tested. Hopefully, this combo will be possible once final Froyo source codes drop (whenever the hell that will be).
---EDIT--- 10/04/2010
Summary of experience:
- 1st try didn't work for me - could never get the JI6 kernal installed with Odin. Turned out to be a sequencing issue in that I did not have Odin ready to go before plugging in and going in to download mode. Also, had to figure out button combos for DL mode.
- 2nd try seemed to work wonderfully except for a few TW crashes, periodically.
- BT VC work but it seems there is a mic issue
- 3rd & subsequent tries have all resulted in good stability, for the most part, except for the periodic and seemingly random TW crashes.
- Shep (see bottom of pg 7 of this thread) seems to have got a working combo, but has not been back to comment as to whether or not he ever started experiencing TW crashes.
- KCutrer1 in post # 135 (pg 14 of this thread) reiterrates that Shep's method worked for him and has reported back that he has NOT had any TW crashes - so, there seems to be hope.
- DOAlaboratories in post 161 (pg 17 of this thread) indicates an I9000 light ROM is working well for him. I'm gonna give this a try and see how it goes.
I'll continue to update this post with more relevant details...
BTW, props to Pirateghost, DOA, and KC, for sticking with this and testing out various methods and processes. Also, there are props that should go to:
I9000 JPK Root | Chainfire: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=788108
Finally, check out this post...it's interesting but I've been unable to download files that cleared hash checking in Odin:

OP
I was able to get my Cappy updated to JPK and then flash over the JI6 kernal. I'm testing it now but it appears to be pretty stable. The auto-rotate issue is no more, nor is the home button - it works properly; testing the other stuff, including bluetooth.
any more stable/less buggy/less laggy than ours?
Sounds interesting, would you be able to compile an ODIN one click?
Well, I am a total noob to Android and only have some very remote coding skills (I'm talking 20+ years ago). So, no, I can't do a OC Odin at this point. But, I'm beginning to think that I might be tracking towards becoming an Adroid hacker.
So far this combo is very stable. I did have one random reboot during, well, you guessed it, GPS testing. (I really think GPS is doomed on this phone - it's seems offly unlikely that this can be figured out with software mods.)
I haven't tested the music player yet...getting ready to load some MP3's and test that out but call quality and signal are very good, 3G works fine, Bluetooth voice commands work but call quality over my Q1 was poor for the person I called - he said he could hardly hear me; like I was in a tunel; I could hear him fine though.
There is little lag, if any, and as far as I'm concerned, it's perfectly fine for me. We'll see how that holds up though. Since this does have the BT VC working, I'm going to stay on this combo as long as music works too.
I'll post my method of getting to this combo in a bit.
--Edit--
OK, so I tried music and it plays through the phone's speaker very nicely - no issues. I also use a Bluetooth FM transmitter in my car and it sounded pretty good. It does seem to be a bit less clear than when playing on 2.1, but it's acceptable for now. Besides, I will likely get rid of the BT FM trans in favor of one that plugs in to the headset jack so as to free up BT for my headset.
I wish someone would make a thread on how to make our own ODIN one click files - would be useful for this as I would like to try out the I9000 Rom
Please update us on
1. HSUPDA modem. Is it working on AT&T? What download/upload speed do you get.
2. Does the voodoo lagfix work on i9000 with Captivate kernel?

That would be cool. I'm going to look in to that at some point.
So, here are the steps I followed to get this working:
1) Restored back to JF6 using a OC Odin (but you can use any method that works for you);
2) Started Odin and added PIT, PDA, and CSC (do not use Re-partition);
2a) Removed SIM;
3) Put phone in Download mode;
4) Flashed the files and once complete and just after reboot process started, removed the battery, closed Odin, and removed USB cable;
5) Put phone in download mode again by holding down volume down button and power buttin while re-inserting the battery;
6) Re-started Odin and loaded the JI6Kernal.tar file in PDA slot;
7) Plugged USB cable back in and Odin detected device;
8) Proceeded with flashing JI6Kernal.tar file and allowing normal process of rebooting, etc.
That's it...phone booted up with no issues and I was running JI6 baseband with JPK ROM.
I got the JPK files from the samfirmware.com site; the JI6Kernal file from another thread on this forum, which I have attached to this post.

1) Haven't tested yet;
2) Don't know, but I doubt it; seems it would have to be re-worked for this kernal.

I am running the JPK I9000 ROM with the JI6 Firmware and that is what it is showing in the top
I know it means next to nothing but this combination scores a 1037 in quadrant
decided to go this route rather than cognition. glad i did. this is like my i9000 experience on 2.1 .. only better
It seems completely stable.
I know to go into download mode with I9000 it's VOL DOWN and POWER then insert USB
How do I go into stock recovery?
i think thats based on what kernel you are running. since we are running captivate kernel it should be normal
does the power button work as "enter" while in recovery mode?
Okay, I'll try that.
I want to make a Clockwork Mod Recovery so i can further MOD files
Im in recovery, it was VOL UP, MENU and POWER
but we dont have an OK button so i cant select anything haha

Yes, it did for me. I just saw you other post too so i assume you got booted. I've learned that you don't have to drop the battery out after the intial flash to JPK; just let it boot, then power back down and go back in to download mode and then flash the JI6Kernal file.
I also found a way to root, install the OCLF and was able to install TB and restore my apps. It's looking better and better as I go forward.
Only bummer is the friggin BT crap...maybe that's why this leaked Cappy Froyo does not have the BT VC at all...there seems to be issues with mic quality. And, on my Q1, after I tell it to activate voice commands and then give it a command, the confirmation voice I get is very faint (although it confirms your command on screen as well).
I'll post the root method in a few minutes.

Tayutama's JPM Froyo w/Xcaliburinhand's Re-oriented Kernel - 11/04/2010

Flash at your own risk. I nor the makers of the ROM and kernel are responsible for any damage you may cause to your phone.
---EDIT---
11/04/2010, 10:22AM, CST.
Everyone should consider updating their modem to the jpp modem included in the most recent Froyo releases from Samsung (JPA & JPO). Both releases use the same modem. I've attached the it below - use Odin to flash it (Phone section); no PIT is needed.
Also, I am testing out the new JPA release from DocRambone. When I am confident I have it running smoothly and am able to articulate the benefits of upgrading I will start a new instruction thread. So far, Tayutama has not released a new version for these new ROMs. If, by the time I am ready to post instructions, he has still not released a new version I will ask him if, perhaps, he could provide us a theme package to apply. I do know that he has been active in helping Doc with his new versions, including the extended shutdown menu.
---END EDIT---
INSTRUCTIONS
1) Download Tayutama_Edition_v1.0.1_Captivate_Full;
2) Download Tayutama_Edition_v1.0.3_Captivate_Patch (new Youtube app, JPM modem, and the 2.1 Re-oriented kernel with Voodoo included);
3) Download Clockwork Recovery Zip I attached to this post;
4) OPTIONAL - Download the Android Stock Lockscreen I attached to this post;
5) Backup your applications, data, etc., and save the backups to your PC/laptop;
6) Restore your phone to Stock and format your SD card (this is not required, but seems to get the best results);
7) Rename the Clockwork Recovery Zip file to update.zip;
8) Copy files to your phone's internal SD card;
9) Turn your phone off, and remove the SIM card;
10) Turn it back on in to Recovery mode (volume up & down + power, release power when AT&T splash screen appears);
11) Select Reinstall Packages; If you get to the Clockwork Recovery menu screen, move to step 12, else select Reinstall Packages again;
12) Select Install Zip From Sdcard;
13) Select Choose Zip From Sdcard;
14) Select Tayutama_Edition_v1.0.1_Captivate_Full.zip;
15) Confirm your selection of Tayutama_Edition_v1.0.1_Captivate_Full.zip - Clockwork Recovery will then install the ROM package;
16) When you get back to the Clockwork Recovery menu screen, choose Go Back;
17) Then choose Reboot System Now.
NOTE: The phone will stop at the Galaxy S splash screen for a minute or so while the ROM is processed. Allow your phone to boot all the way to fully loading the "desktop."
The purpose of flashing the 1.0.1 ROM first is because it includes the JG8 modem, a Bell modem, that has access to the WCDMA 850 band. We've found that even though this JG8 modem will be "overwritten" by the JPM modem that will be flashed in the next steps, it seems to leave behind access to the 850 band, which the JPM modem does not have.
18) Next, turn your phone off;
19) Turn it back on in to Recovery mode (volume up & down + power, release power when AT&T splash screen appears);
20) Select Install Zip From Sdcard (assuming you get the CWM Menu on first go - if not, select Re-install Packages);
21) Select Choose Zip From Sdcard;
22) Select Tayutama_Edition_v1.0.3_Captivate_Patch.zip;
23) Confirm your selection of Tayutama_Edition_v1.0.3_Captivate_Patch.zip - Clockwork Recovery will then install the patch;
24) When you get back to the Clockwork Recovery menu screen, choose Go Back;
OPTIONAL: Flash the stock lockscreen file following steps 20-23. If not, proceed to step 25.
25 Then choose Reboot System Now.
NOTE: The phone will first stop at the AT&T or Galaxy S splash screen while Voodoo is enabled. After the Voodoo process is finished phone will proceed to and then stop at the Galaxy S splash screen for a minute or so while the ROM is processed.
If you live/work/stay in an area where WCDMA 850 is prevalent you may want to have your phone use it exclusively. To do so, follow these steps:
1) Go to phone dial Keypad;
2) Enter *#2263#
3) Select [4] Combi Bands [];
4) Select [8] WCDMA 850 (FDD V) [];
5) Select Add WCDMA_W850 [];
6) Use Menu and select Back (you should now see WCDMA 850 (FDD V)[*]);
7) Use Menu and select Back;
8) Select WCDMA;
9) Select WCDMA_W850;
10) Use Menu and select Back (you should now see WCDMA 850 is the only one checked);
11) Use Menu and select End.
A BIG THANKS to Xcaliburinhand and Tayutama - Excellent work guys. See their threads for info on those they give credit to.

It may take 5 minutes if you take a break between flashes.
I loaded them all on my sd card and flashed one after another in CW. It takes longer to restore the apps than to flash

Just as a suggestion, this thread would be a good place to compile which Roms would work with other modems/kernels. Like, I am running the Cog ASOP rom, i like it, but would really like it with HSUPA, but i'm not clear if it would work or not? Also post a general "how to" in this thread would be very useful. This thread should be easy to find though search. Just a suggestion.

alls you have to do is download excaliburinhand's reorient kernal in this same forum, put it in the pda part of odin..then download the jpm modem which you can find in the same thread, and i posted it the cog 2.2 thread around page 495 or so. you unzip the jpm modem if its in .zip format and put the modem.bin file in the phone slot of odin, put in download mode, hit start and your done. youll have working hsupa and the option to flash i9000 roms if you want(as long as you keep that kernal)

And bluetooth will still work too? Seems like theres a tradeoff every time you need to switch kernels or modems.
I am 54 minutes in.
Got the tatuyama installed. It hangs badly, fc on boot.
I'd get maybe the 2.0.1 kernel installed if I could figure out how to do it, somewhere around page 30 of the xcaliburinhand thread Boomerod said he would post instructions, but he didn't.
Then theres the question of the jpm modem, go to samfirmwares, dig around the site to find the i9000 jpm kernel? or should we extract the jpm kernel from tatuyma's site, no wait, that one is using the ug8 modem right?
I wanted to do this as quickly as y'all said it could be done but it can't, not without detailed instructions.
Going back to cog 8.1. I apparently can't swim on this end of the pool.
10 minutes in, I have cog 8.1 configured and all apps restored.

i did post instructions but not very detailed..the biggest thing is knowing how to use odin without messing something up which, if you do everything right everything will be fine. are you sure you downloaded the right version of tayutuma's rom? if you flash the reorient kernal, you can use any i9000 rom you want. you just have to make sure that the rom your flashing does not overwrite the reorient kernal, and if it does, you need to extract the kernal from that rom, and put the reorient kernal in. if this is all too much, maybe it is good to keep to something like cog that is user friendly(but is still an excellent rom). and like i said in my previous post, i have posted the jpm modem available for upload in a few threads, just search my posts if you want it.

I am running one of Shepps Roms:
Fully Loaded JPM\JI6 rom with 2e kernel 10-15-10
Then I flashed the modem file from his first install of that rom.
This file listed below:
I897UCJI6-OCD-REV02-Low-MODE
After flashing the 10-15-10 rom I was getting horrible reception and tons of dropped calls, which I have never had prior with this phone or my Nokia N82 or 6682. So I tried about 3 different modem files ending up at the one listed above. That one gave the best reception and the fastest internet speeds for non-HSUPA modems. I average over 2000kbps download and 350 upload in the dallas/ft. worth area. I have no FC's or soft reboots of any kind, up time thus far is 94:44:38. Also my GPS is spot on and finds my position very quickly, better than the 2.1 roms I was using. I am happy so far.
all the problems we have will be resolved when a bell I9000 froyo build is leaked.
Bell i9000 have the correct bands for us and just tend to work better with the captivate using the custome kernal
Awesome Boomerod!!! Good thread so people stop complaining about signals and stuff....
If you want something to burn the i9k rom, try the universal lagfix. Its ridiculous fast...... but its i9k based rom, so autorotation blba bla bla don't work....

Voodoo & clockwork on telus fascinate!!

ive been testing kernals on my telus fascinate t959d to see if there was any way to get around the no developer issue and came across the love off my live.
the kernels name is "Voodoo-stable-5.0.-Froyo-GT-I9000-odin-pda".
From leaked stock 2.2, i flashed this kernel over the stock through odin. during the initial boot, the female droid voice walked me thru voodoo setup. wait afew minutes after your phone is done loading to allow voodoo to completely enable itself or u will get fc issues. To get to Red clockwork recovery, while your phone is off, hold both volume bottons and the power button. continue holding those 3 buttons until the 2nd i9000 popsup then release all 3 buttons. That should load u into clockwork recovery voodoo. This just basically opened the floodgates for rom testing for me. im running nero v4.1 on my TELUS FASCINATE t959d with no errors at all.
imma upload and post the link
this is the omega leaked 2.2 files in cause u need emergency odin reflash
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=868829
this is the voodoo enabled kernel
http://rapidshare.com/files/442330146/Voodoo-stable-5.0.1-Froyo-GT-I9000-odin-pda.tar to install this, just download odin, get yout phone into download mode, place the file in the pda slot, and go. i suggest u go back to stock b4 u start for a wiped stock install. if u need help, email me at [email protected] Thx to omega for creating my interest in android custom roms
UPDATE!!!
i just exchanged the previous kernal for a i9000 advanced zoodoo OC/UV and its working mint with nero 4.1. heres the thread to the other kernals
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=909540
telus fascinate users rejoice!!!!! we r now up to date with everything
after playing around some more ive realized the telus t959d can use most i9000 kernels with no issues. the only 2 issues ive found running advanced voodoo is theres no home button but since i hate having apps running in the background that doesnt bother me and when your phone completely dies, and u plug it in, the battery charge screen gliches out and needs a battery pull. i can easily get around both for the features of a overclocked or undervolted kernel. as far as roms go, most i9000 roms and most vibrant roms work! after i got the rom up and running i just reflashed the proper kernel 4 my phone and the telus modem pulled from omegas leak and bam! ive tested both i9000s darkys v8.0 gingerbread but didnt like the icons for sms and gmail and also nero v4.1 for vibrant with flashed telus modem and i9000 kernel which works mint. running right now. advanced voodoo comes with a custom boot which overwrites the poopy i9000 image and replaces it with a red voodoo anvanced screen. so instead of seeing the sght959d then i9000, it says sgh t959d then advanced voodoo then nexus x boot. looks sweet
Not quite "mint" from your own description.
These are some of the problems I had running kernels / Roms meant for other phones, are you experiencing any of the same?
1- Reversed volume buttons
2- GPS not working (as in won't even start)
3-No FM radio
4- Plugging in the USB cable caused the phone to go into a shutdown/boot loop
GREAT NEWS!!! FINALLY!
Tho.. since Im noob in this world.. Im going to wait a little more until we find suitable (i.e. no homekey error stuff ) and stable!!
Great Great Great GREAT! Thanks LINKSLOVESANDROID!!!!

i had these same issues while running a vibrant kernel. install a i9000 kernel. use 1 of the 1s i packaged in the 1st 2 posts. i flashed a i9000 kernel to get clockwork. then used clockwork to flash nero v4.1 which comes with a vibrant kernel in the rom which automatically overwrites your previous i9000 kernel u flashed b4 hand to get clockwork running. i then used odin to flash a i9000 kernel over the vibrant kernel. Then used the telus modem pulled from omegas 2.2 leAK and flashed that over phone in odin Which left my telus fascinate with the following
-1.3 Ghz Overclock / Undervolted Kernel(Thx U Voltage Control)
-Advanced Voodoo v666.2 i think.... with voodoo sound and advanced voodoo bootscreen
-Nero v4.1 Gingerbread Looks NICE!!!
-working voice calls and text messages
-3d gaming working mint with overclock
-google maps is working properly- navigation seems to not b able to find location thou i didnt wait long and i was indoors
-fm radio is not there because it was not made 4 i9000s just the t959d but isnt a big deal 4 me cause u need to have the headphones that came with the phone hookedup to use as a antenna. if u dont have those exact heapdhones plugged in, the phone says something like please attach headphones for antenna signal." better to just geta internet streaming radio app
- flashing the i9000 kernel solved the following issues
proper volume rockers configuration
and the charging issue. now charging works fine. the only time i had a issue was when i charged my phone while it was turned off and it needed a battery pull. but then i plugged it back in while off and it worked fine.
basically, the only issue i can see being a problem for some is the no home button just 2 back buttons. but honestly, the android os told me to use back more often then home so it saves system ram and doesnt have too much background apps running.
so basically, if your want a custom rom, the only downside is theres no home button and navigation MAY not work.
on the plus side, your phone will become super fast to the point stock rom is slow. ill b posting a video in the coming days of my rom setup from phone startup to shutdown to PROVE this method works
Another user has asked supercurio to make us a custom kernel, supercurio said in his vibrant kernel thread that he would, but that was a couple of days ago. Please post the vid, this intrests me, I can live with the back and home button problems, but am worried about the usb boot loop.
EDIT: I've just flashed the kernel you suggested. Home acts like back, but everything else seems fine so far. I booted into clockwork and enabled voodoo, plus I also O/C to 1200mghz. When I get home i'm going to plug it into usb and see what happens. Hopefully no bootloop!
OK so I have big market place problems, from what I can gather, the phone is recognized by the market as an i9000, which means I can't get some apps that i've had before...everything works but home...just sucks that the market does not work...will try to fix with market enabler...

Market is totally f'd up. Tried to fix by:
- go back to stock kernel - no good
- factory reset - no
- clockwork wipe data/cach - no good
- flash a new rom and start fresh - no good
I'm going to ODIN back to complete stock now, and re-root. I would recommend to NOT FLASH this kernel, the market does not work properly. Nothing is there; no rom manager, no sgs anything and your paid apps will be GONE.
I'm so glad that this topic is on its way!
A question from a noob tho... Is flashing other ROM kernel is the only way we can have custom ROMS?
Why can't we have our own?? (
If you can post up a video so i can check out what you've posted, i would be willing to help out and find solutions for some of the problems at hand.
Right now i'm alittle wary about this.

There are two problems i had:
1. The market is f'd up...i'm on some wierd test market and can't get access to my paid apps, or any other apps for that matter, only test apps. See here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=878181&page=5 and here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=10736976&postcount=89
2. Home acts like back, which is a big problem since you can't multitask because as you hit back to do the next thing, you will close whatever you were doing before.
Other than those two problems everything worked fine.

until a developer decides we are a big enough group of users that we deserve our own "hiding spot" we will have to use i9000 kernels to use custom roms. rumor has it the creator of voodoo supercurio is developing a kernel for our phones which will lead to custom roms. until then, i9000 kernels r the way togo. i have a i9000 advanced voodoo kernel overclocked at 1.28 ghz and undervolted to save battery running a vibrant custom rom called nero v5 which basically skinned the entire setup to look like gingerbread and got rid of the samsung bloatware. honestly, even after we have our own custom kernel ill b sticking with i9000 kernels. just because development has been rediculously slow with the telus t959d fascinate. its taken this long b4 a kernel was even thought about. until it has its own development team creating new roms like every other sgs model on a weekly basis, i9000 wuill have the go ahead. i9000 kernels can run i9000 roms and vibrant roms. and there development communitys are huge! try the above method using custom i9000 kernel. the only issue is theres no home button and afew apps wont download because it thibnks your ussing a i9000. only app i notcied was that 3d mmorpg wont download. i cant remember the name of it. but other then that its great. i got psx4droid running final fantasy 9 overclocked with voodoo. runs MINT!!!! ill gladly walk u through the entire process over msn or facebook etc. send me a email [email protected].

ive been testing kernals on my telus fascinate t959d to see if there was any way to get around the no developer issue and came across the love off my live.
the kernels name is "Voodoo-stable-5.0.-Froyo-GT-I9000-odin-pda".
This just basically opened the floodgates for rom testing for me. im running nero v4.1 on my TELUS FASCINATE t959d with no errors at all.
imma upload and post the link
this is the omega leaked 2.2 files in cause u need emergency odin reflash

this is the voodoo enabled kernel
http://rapidshare.com/files/442330146/Voodoo-stable-5.0.1-Froyo-GT-I9000-odin-pda.tar to install this, just download odin, get yout phone into download mode, place the file in the pda slot, and go. i suggest u go back to stock b4 u start for a wiped stock install. if u need help, email me at [email protected] Thx to omega for creating my interest in android custom roms

[Telus T959D Fascinate][VIDEO]step by step instructions to use custom roms

[TELUS FASCINATE USERS] Hello XDA and community. I've compiled a complete walkthrough to install either i9000 or vibrant custom roms onto a telus T959D fascinate. Follow these instructions to have relatively the same STABLE setup im using at the moment
I AM NOT ACCOUNTABLE IF U BRICK YOUR PHONE!!! PLEASE FOLLOW CAREFULLY!! I MADE SURE I MENTIONED EVERY SINGLE BIT OF INFORMATION SO YOU COULD FOLLOW ALONG, NOT THINK YOU KNOW WHAT YOUR DOING THEN TRY WITHOUT FOLLOWING THE INSTRUCTIONS LIKE MY DAD PUTTING TOGETHER A COMPUTER DESK!!! THIS IS A EXPENSIVE PIECE OF HARDWARE SO FOLLOW MY EXACT STEPS!!!!!
The only 2 known issues ive had personally were
-no home button just 2 back buttons for the time being
-phone model specific apps for the T959D wont download from the market because you will be using a i9000 kernel to mimic the i9000 system
THE ONLY REQUIREMENTS ARE TO MAKE SURE YOUR BATTERY IS FULLY CHARGED AND YOU HAVE DOWNLOADED AND INSTALLED THE SAMSUNG USB DRIVERS
http://www.samsung.com/ca/consumer/...TLS/index.idx?pagetype=prd_detail&tab=support
I've Added a video of my current setup.. i was going to do a video showcasing the installation but i really dont want to redownload all my apps. far too time consuming.
STEP ONE - Download and reflash froyo 2.2 1st thing were gonna do is reflash stock 2.2. i know most of u r already on stock 2.2 but a fellow tester by the name of roccos_van said he was having market issues. So i wanna be 100% careful. So lets flash to stock. TO start, download the omega 2.2 leak here: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=C3DQ1LZF
the leak comes with odin and all files needed to flash back to 2.2 stock. Once the download is complete, unzip the file to somewhere your familiar with ie. desktop or my documents. The files name will b T959TJL3. inside this file, youll find odin and 3 files. Right click odin and click start as administrator. Odin has a fairly simple setup. the thing u wanna do in odin is place the files from the
T959TJL3 folder into the proper catagories. Heres a screenshot of what it should look like when its properly setup
once your odin looks EXACTLY THE SAME, its time to put your phone into download mode.
Turn off your phone and wait for it too completely power down. once its completely off, pull your battery. SGS phones come with a hidden mode called download mode which is what the phone goes into when you recieve a OTA update. to manually put your phone into download mode, follow these instructions
MAKE SURE YOU USE THE SAMSUNG CABLE THAT CAME WITH YOUR PHONE!!
make sure u have your samsung usb cable plugged into the pc but not into the phone (not yet at least) and make sure u remove your battery.
step 1. hold down the volume down button and continue holding
step 2. whille still holding down the volume down button, plug your phone into the usb cable
step 3. while still holding down the volume down button, pop your battery in.
Your phone should show this screen
Now if u look at odin you will have a yellow stripe on the top left area as seen in this picture
Now your ready to flash to stock 2.2. In odin, click start. It will then begin flashing the stock firmware into the phone.
It will look something like this
After afew minutes, it will reset your phone and odin will look like this but will say reset instead of pass
let your phone sit for while untill odin looks like this
once it says pass, your officially back to stock 2.2. CONGRATZ!!! step1 complete!
Now onto the i9000 kernel
STEP 2 - DOWNLOAD AND INSTALL CUSTOM VOODOO i9000 KERNEL
1st off, download the custom kernel here
http://rapidshare.com/#!download|30...stable-5.0.1-Froyo-GT-I9000-odin-pda.tar|6461
This kernel has clockwork recovery enabled which allows you to flash new roms, make backups, etc.
once the file is done downloading, reopen odin and place the file in to PDA section and do nothing else!!
Put your phone back into download mode following the steps above until your ready to flash. Once your ready to go, click start. It will only take like 10 seconds this time around since your only flashing a kernel.
When your phone resets, it will say 959d then quickly change to i9000 and then it will begin to talk to you! lmao. dont fret, its supposed todo this. its installing the voodoo lagfix in your phone. this will take approx 5-10 minutes. once your phone is up and running, let it sit for about 5 minutes so it can finish installing the lagfix. Once your phone is up and running again, power it down. Wait for it to be completely off, then we are going to get into recovery mode.
To get into recovery mode, hold down both volume buttons and hold power. Continue holding these 3 buttons until your phone loads the i9000 bootscreen for the 2nd time then release.
You should b in a screen resembling this but yours will be red
To navigate recovery, you must use the volume buttons for up and down and power for enter.
From the main menu, go down to lagfix and click enter.
in this menu, u can enable or diasble the voodoo lagfix. Since we want to flash a new rom, WE MUST TURN OFF VOODOO!!!
YOU MUST ALWAYS TURN OFF VOODOO BEFORE FLASHING ANYTHING OR YOU CAN POTENTIALLY BRICK YOUR PHONE!!!
once youve clicked disable lagfix, disable system lagfix and disable debug lagfix, go back to the main menu then click reboot.Againm, it will take like 5-10 minutes to completely disable the lagfix. Once its completely done disabling the lagfix, your phone will load. You wont have signal to telus quite yet, but we will get to that. From this point, u can choose what u want to do.
U have 3 options
1. Install a vibrant rom
2. Install a i9000 rom or
3. Flash The telus modem and stay stock
But since this is a tutorial on how to get a custom rom up and running, ill choose a rom. On to step 3!
STEP 3 - CHOOSING AND FLASHING A CUSTOM ROM
If u want my opinion, if u choose vibrant rom, choose Nero v5
Nero v.5: http://www.teamwhiskey.com/DownVibrant.html
If u choose a i9000 rom, id say darkys v8.1.
Darkys v8.1: http://www.multiupload.com/SHPR3TXLYB
Either choice you make, download the file to a familiar place on your computer.
On your phone, goto Settings > Applications > Development and turn on USB debugging.
Once the download is complete, connect your phone to your computer. Once your phones signals it knows its connected to the computer, pull down your notification bar and click USB CONNECTED. This will open up the Mass storage. Then click enable usb storage.
Now your computer and phone are able to communicate and share files. click my computer then you should see your phone named removable storage. Open the device. Now you want to drag and drop the custom rom zip into the root of your internal storage. once its finished copying the zip, click close usb storage on your phone then unplug it once it says its ok. Now you have the custom rom on your phone but its not installed quite yet.
IF U CHOSE NERO v.5: NERO HAS A VIBRANT KERNEL PREINSTALLED WHICH WILL NOT ALLOW A TELUS FASCINATE TO CHARGE! IT WILL BOOTLOOP UNTIL U UNPLUG YOUR CHARGER. WE WILL B OVERWRITING THE VIBRANT KERNEL WITH A I9000 KERNEL FURTHER INTO THE TUTORIAL SO DONT START THINKING NEGATIVE! IT IS A SIDEAFFECT OF PORTING A VIBRANT KERNEL. ONCE WE HAVE THE ROM WORKING, WE WILL BE RE-ADDING ANOTHER I9000 CUSTOM KERNEL TO FIX THIS ISSUE. SO JUST CONTINUE WITH THE INSTALLATION
IF U CHOOSE DARKYS: NO ISSUES HERE BECAUSE IT IS A I9000 KERNEL. BUT I PERFER THE LOOK OF NERO V5 SO THE ADDED BULLS**T TO GET IT WORKING PROPERLY IS DEFINATELY WORTH IT!!
To install the custom rom you chose, follow these instructions:
1. Turn off phone and wait till its completely shutdown
2. Use the above mentioned 3 button combo to get into recovery
3. Once in recovery, click wipe data/factory reset. once it finshes, click wipe cache partition. Once it finishes, goto advanced then wipe dalvik cache.
4. After youve wiped everything, go back to the main menu and click install zip from SDcard. Then click choose zip. u should see your nero 5 - voodoo file. click it. it will ask if your sure. click yes. your rom will then proceed to install. you will see some wierd stuff but it will load perfectly. once its done, click reboot.
Because both Roms come with Voodoo enabled, you will have to sit and wait while voodoo reenables itself. once your rom is up and running, you probably still dont have a signal from telus and depending on which type of rom u chose, u may not be able to charge your battery. This is exactly y i said make sure your battery was fully charged. Im quite sure both of these roms come with enter recovery mode by holding your power button and it will say recovery. click that.
Once in recovery, your going to want to disable the lagfix, system lagfix and debuglagfix. Once youve disabled all of them, reboot. Again, it will take like 5 minutes to disable the lagfix. Once its done, shut down your phone entirely.
Now that the rom is installed, Step 3 is complete! Congratz! We are almost done!!
STEP 4 - OVERCLOCKED KERNEL & TELUS MODEM
The final steps to have your phone up and running is to flash a new advanced voodoo kernel that is overclocked and allows undervolting for better battery life (as well as fixes the charging bootloop issue on a vibrant rom) and reflashing the telus modem file so you can get signal again.
Click the following link and download this file:
voodoo.advanced.v666.2-20110111-21.53.tar
http://kernel.1ug.org/
Once the download is complete, reopen odin and place the voodoo.advanced.v666.2-20110111-21.53.tar in the pda file and thats it!!
get your phone into download mode and click start in odin. This will flash the stable kernel to your phone and allow you to overclock and undervolt. If u chose Nero v.5, plug your phone in for a charge, it deserves it Finally to get your telus signal back up and running.
Shut down your phone completely. Open odin (for the final time :0). You remember the T959TJL3 folder we used to first restore to stock froyo 2.2 in step 1 (also the folder odin is in)? Well what we want to do is take the file with the word "phone" in it and place it in the phone section and thats it thats all!! Get your phone back into download mode and click start in odin. this shouldnt take very long as your just exchaging the nero modem for the telus.
Once the flash is complete, BAAAMMMMMM BABYYYY!!!! custom roms!!!!! WITH WORKING DATA!!! ON A TELUS FASCINATE!!!
Now that your successfully running a custom rom, i suggest going back into recovery and re-enabling lagfix, system lagfix and debug lagfix then rebooting. After the reboot, i suggest re-opening recovery then going to backup and restore then clicking backup. This will create a system image of your freshly loaded rom so if u have issues down the line, u can easily restore back to your freshly loaded rom problem free. I THINK THIS IS DEFINATELTY A NECCESITY!!! BETTER SAFE THEN SORRY!!! IF NOT YOULL HAVE TO START FROM STOCK 2.2 ALL OVER AGAIN!!!
(OPTIONAL): HOW TO OVERCLOCK AND UNDERVOLT
Overclocking your phone is super easy considering once youve added the advanced voodoo kernel its automatically overclocked but you cant control it. I suggest going onto the market and purchasing SETCPU. Its pritty cheap, comes with a widget, and allows you to choose the max cpu speed (overclocked its 1.28ghz) and the minimum. I only overclock when im playing psx4droid v1.7 (final fantasy 9 runs mint) but usually keep my cpu set at 600mhz max 200mhz min while im doing my day to day to preserve battery life but also keep the speed.
SETCPU HAS ISSUES ON GALAXY S PHONES WITH THE SET TO BOOT OPTION AND SAVING PROFILES. DO NOT USE SET TO BOOT OR PROFILES!!! JUST CHANGE THE CPU SPEED MANUALLY WHEN YOU WANT TO CHANGE IT OR YOU COULD SERIOUSLY MESSUP YOUR PHONE
Undervolting is pritty easy also. just go checkout Xan`s app: voltage control v.3.
Heres a link to his thread and the the download link for the apk is at the bottom of his post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=829731
Either download this file directly to your phone or download it to your computer then use usb storage to drag and drop the apk into the root of your internal sdcard. Close your usb storage and unplug phone. Open your custom roms file manager and find the apk. Click it. Use program installer to install it.
Once its installed open the app. Superuser will ask you if its allowed to allow voltage control to work. Click yes. You will then see a list of voltages etc.
1st thing you should do is change your scheduler to noop. Its the best scheduler in the app and easiest on your phone.
I`m going to paste stable undervolting values you should copy into your voltage control.
1280 = -25
1200 = -25
1120 = -25
1000 = -50
900 = -50
800 = -50
600 = -50
400 = -75
200 = -75
100 = -75
These settings have worked perfectly for me although you could try different settings. Once youve added the above values into voltage control, click the menu button and click apply now. then click menu again then apply now again (i heard it takes 2 times to actually go through). The values i put there are safe so if you followed those, open menu and click apply to boot, then menu then apply to boot. Your phone is now undervolted.
I just spent roughly 9 hours creating this post so if it has helped you in anyway possible, plz click thank you. The market issue is fixed, it had nothing to do with your instructions, I have a bad imei and simply had to force stop a few market related apps, clear data and cache then reboot.
You should also update your post as user supercurio released a custom t959d kernel today with clockwork and voodoo.

just my luck. spend 9 hours posting then supercurio posts a kernel.. lmao. o well. if your looking for a overclocked undervolted phone, follow this post

i did disable voodoo. dunno y it bricked. i went to the future shop i got it from, lied and said i flashed official froyo from kies and it wouldnt start afterward. They checked my account. turns out i was 3 days late on my replacement policy fee so i have 2 wait 3 business days with a paper weight phone until it goes through b4 they can replace it for me. but on the brightside, my buddy who works the cell area said when i get my replacement, if the same thing happens he has to give me the telus phone of my choice. SOO. if the htc desire hd does come to telus, i can purposely brick my phone, say froyo did it, and get the desire hd for free. although i dont know much about htc, ive heard they r the best android brand around. u got any info on htc at all rocco? all i know is sense looks sexier then any rom ive seen thus far including every differenty model rom ive seen on youtube. imma post a new thread warning t959d users to beware on flashing roms until there propp[erly ported to our phone. cause as u can see in the above post, i know what i was doing. wasnt like i just fukedup and forgot something. i had nero v5 running with the supercurio stock voodoo kernel last night but it felt like it was hiccuping after i enabled the lagfix so i decided to go back to stock and try other roms. from what i heard, axura is the best of the best for vibrant roms. so i flashed to stock with odin. added the new kerne; thru odin, let the lagfix install, rebooted into recovery, disabled the lagifx, system lagfix and debug. rebooted. let the lagfix uninstall. copied the zip to my interna; sdcard, rebooted into recovery, wipe data, cache and dalvik then chose the zip. it installed properly. i clicked reboot phone then it turned off. and that was that. question is is there anyway to use slp to open your phone and try and reset it or is it bricked and am i without a phohe till next wednesday?

The only thing I can say is keep trying to get it into download mode? I had an HTC desire, I just sold it on ebay, and have the cash waiting for the Desire HD...so yeah, the HTC stuff is real nice. It's being released at TELUS on feb 10, for $499.

Best way I've found to avoid this is to unzip the ROM and take a look at the update script to see exactly what it's flashing. Some custom ROMs flash more then just the kernel and modem and modify things like the boot.bin, which is almost sure to brick your phone if it's not compatible.
To all Telus Fascinate T959D users, I have posted a complete guide to installing custom Vibrant ROM's.
The guide shows you how to install any ROM for the T-Mobile Vibrant (I prefer Team Whiskey's Nero 5), then flash a custom Telus Fascinate kernel with Voodoo and CWR built-in, and then finally flashing the stock Telus Fascinate JL3 modem.
This will leave you with a 100% functioning (yes, flawless) custom ROM on your Fascinate.
The reason I posted the guide, despite this one already existing, is that it doesn't require you to sacrifice certain functionality. The guide I have posted is only for flashing Vibrant ROMs, and uses supercurio's newly released T959D Stock+Voodoo kernel that is built on the Telus one, so everything works.
Themes
So I just followed samperlmutar's guide and installed the nero v5 rom. My question is now I'm having problems applying themes for Nero v5. I followed instructions to the T on the theme pages in the Vibrant section but it says it is not compatible. Anyone know if Vibrant Nero v5 themes will work on a Telus Fascinate?
This is a very informative post - thank you.
im very new to this my phone will not turn on completely i can get into download mode still but phone isnt functioning. I'm just trying to install 2.2 OS on it. Is anyone online that can help
crap
I have an issue. Everything was going great Step 1 complete. Step 2 the download was deleted from rapidshare. so I googled and downloaded the file from dl.project-voodoo.org
It failed. now the phone boots but only to a screen with a phone icon and a computer icon with a warning icon. so it wont boot, it wont connect to the pc and wont hard reset.
Any suggestions? Thanks.
Rick

k well I got it back in download mode and odin 3 recognizes it but step 2 is still failing. any chance I can get that step 2 download?
Yeah it's pretty annoying how every guide I've tried to go through so far has broken links.

I know, I am an idiot.

Ok, I have looked everywhere, and haven't really found a solution for my issue. I wanted to get a lagfix put on my phone (T-mo Froyo), and couldn't get the 3E script to work right, causing no clockworkmod. I saw where someone had posted that you should put a kernel on there that already had the clockworkmod on it. I wound up flashing a zimage, that put Clockworkmod v2.5.1.0 lagfix edition. The only thing is, is that it won't boot all the way up. It's like it is confused. It starts with the gt-i9000 screen, goes to the t-mo boot up, and then black screens and vibrates occasionally. I am able to boot into the recovery screen, but don't can't get a rom onto the phone's sd. I can put one on the sd card, but can't get the phone to that point. I have downloaded and re-installed three sets of drivers, and I keep having a fail on them. Now, I got Windows 7 64 bit. I am going to give Xp 32 a try in a few minutes, because I know on some other things they can be finicky. I was going to put the bionix V on this phone, but right now I will be just happy to get it back to stock. I am sorry for being a dumbass. I believe that it is in the blood though I have been looking for about a full day on a reso. This link seemed promissing, but I wasn't too sure where to go after recovery? Thanks peeps..

yea...the kernels you need were the voodoo kernels that Supercurio posted in the DEV section. Sounds like you flashed the european version instead of a US vibrant version. And you flashed a zimage instead of a kernel. Get it into download mode and odin a kernel for your corresponding base from supercurio. You may need eugenes froyo that doesnt brick and then odin to stock JFD to get rid of the bootscreen first.

This, definitely.
I try to avoid ClockworkMod Recovery to be honest, I make fewer errors if there's an Odin option.
Thank you so much guys! I am rolling again, and all is well in my village! (Remember, I am the village idiot).
Thanks so much! You have no idea how relieved I am!
