On balance, my new Epic wins hands-down. I love the device, Android, Linux, and it seems to be a far better gaming platform (a bonus -- not what I bought it for, but I'm having a blast with the portfolio of Gameloft 3D FP games -- amazing!)
However, I am lost on a few things. So, here's a thread to get some help. To start, some video questions:
If there's a media player to handle one's video library, I can't find it. The only way I've found to open and watch local video is to find the file with My Files, and open it there. This brings up the native video player, which is rather limited in features.
Once the video player is up, I can't figure out how to get back to it if I task-switch to something else for a moment. Can easily happen with a phonecall, for example. Sometimes the window "stack" facilitates using the back button to get back to it, but under more circumstances than not, you can't.
This is a real PITA, because I lose my place in the video. I have to re-open it, and seek around to find where I was. Am I missing something here?
I was a major CorePlayer fan on the OmniaII. It had it's own problems (lack of graphics acceleration support, the biggest), but those warts were far outbalanced by the rich featureset. I plan to get CP for my Epic when (if ever) it becomes available, but for now I'd like to get something similar if it's already out there. Any recommendations?
I've read a lot about the "lag fix". Do I need to do that? I've got a very new Epic, running DI18 (a week and a half old).
I fell asleep on my Epic, and now it seems to me the slider rails are "loose". I can skew the screen portion of the phone clockwise and CCW, back and forth, when opening, to as much as +/- 5-10deg. I paid no attention to this earlier, so it may be no different. The slide seems otherwise solid and fine, but for this. Are your Epic's similar?
Sprint bloatware: Is there an easy way to disable much of this (services, etc.)? For example, Amazon MP3, Sprint Nascar, and a dozen or so other services/apps that are started at boot and respawned if killed. I won't ever be using this junk, so I'd rather they not be consuming resources, slowing things down. Do I have to root the phone and manually edit Linux startup files to get rid of this junk?
Thanks for helping out this noob!
Was omnia2 android?
Out the box Epic plays more file types than other non Galaxy S phones. On the market "Rock Player" plays all file types, followed by an xda dev's app "vplayer" I think it is. Other choices inlclude Act 1 Video Player and Meridian.
Instead of "My Files" to browse files to use with default player and other function try one of Astro File Manager(my primary), IO file manager, Androzip and more.
Most problem you may have can be solved in the "Market"

Omnia II! I really wanted this phone when it first came out. Omnia II runs Windows Mobile.
+1 on rockplayer
No lag fix needed on the Epic, there are lots of threads on this.
Not sure how to fix your slept on epic part, you'll have to read up on that.
As far as bloatware, you can follow this thread

Be Careful, if you want to use sprint updates you have to leave certain apps like sprint hotspot, Amazon mp3, etc or else you'll get a validation error when doing updates.
This has become such a pain for me I just leave those apps on the device. There are devs, who have great workarounds too you just have to read up on it.

Anyone successfully use the Blockbuster on Demand application? I used it to download the two give-aways when I first got the phone (Forest Gump & Ferris Buelers Day off) - But since going to the 23569 May 23 Cookie ROM, I can no longer download anything.
Now I know this is not NRG's issue, and he really shouldn't have to chase solutions for T-Mobile Apps, as there has to be a limit to what he can do, I am just wondering if anyone here has had time to work on this and figured anything out.
I did the forced update from 1.45 to 2.45, with the primary difference being that the earlier version sent you your browser to do the download, and 2.45 does the download within the app. Or should. But in my case, I have had Blockbuster refund the movies, reselected them, re-installed the app, even deleted my account and then created a new account. The tech I worked with was limited to "remove and re-apply" techniques, and we got nowhere.
I currently have two movies in the "Ready to Download" state, and I kept these two specifically because each has one of the two errors I get:
"0x00d2764" - This is known to be a DRM issue, but the only fix is to go to Application data/Microsoft/Media Player/WMDRM and delete all the files in that folder.
Part of the problem on this one was, when I went to check out that folder, I didn't HAVE a WMDRM folder (so of course tried CREATING ONE, but that didn't have any effect. The only file in the Media Player folder was "XMEMediaLibrary.mlb" - I also tried playing with media player, recreating the library etc.
"NullReferenceException" - This was the one I got right away when trying to download on Energy ROM
Anyone have some ideas? I would really like to get this working again, even if the Blockbuster Movies (at least the two freebies I got) were NOT FORMATED for HD2 screen. If you were expecting them to look like the Transformer conversions, you will be woefully disappointed. I mean, this IS a wide screen format (if not 16:9) but you end up with two SUBSTANTIAL black bands Top & Bottom. Ugh.
Okay, so much for delivering content to the "Hardest working Screen in the Movie Business" Who then has a tried and true method for converting Ripped DVDs into our beautiful media device? I don't have the patience to try this and that ripper, this and that converter, get the demos, look at 5 minutes of video, or have a huge watermark all while NOT getting a nice conversion to begin with. What I dream of is a 2-3 step process, not a 8-10 step process, that I have to lord over the whole time. I would GLADLY pay for a properly done ripper/converter so I could simply watch a movie on this device that was made to do just that. Anyone?

^bump^ I need this too. Has anyone gotten this figured out??
Hi all!!
So, it's time for me to upgrade from my Dash 3G. I've really liked the phone and have learned the Windows Mobile OS, fairly well. BUT, it's time to upgrade and I've wanted a touch screen for quite some time. Originally, I really wanted the G1, but after my girlfriend got it, I had second thoughts and stuck with the Dash 3G.
Fast forward to present and I walk into a Tmobile store, planning on upgrading to the Hd2. Low and behold, there's a phone, sitting in a cradle, playing Avatar. "What the Heck?" I think to myself. Actually, I said it out loud...and here comes a Tmobile rep. After a few minutes chatting, and actually putting hands on the reps Vibrant, I'm thrilled!! So, I come home, do a bit of research, mainly here on XDA, and call up Tmobile and get 2 Vibrants shipped out. Oh, forgot to mention, my girlfriend's also upgrading....lol. Both phones should arrive Wednesday and I CAN'T wait!!!
So, for the past 2 days, I've been sitting at the computer, reading, studying and reading some more. Last night, I ordered the Realook SP, so I'm ready when the phones arrive. I'm not taking any chances...lol. I decided to go this route, after reading the 31 pages battling the Realook and ClearFreak, here on XDA.
Here's a ton of questions...lol. Please forgive the questions that have been covered, extensively, elsewhere on XDA.
1. Now, this will be the first Andriod phone I've owned AND the first touch screen. What kind of learning curve do I have to look forward to?
2. I keep reading about "rooting" the phone. I'm sure it's been covered, but, what exactly is "rooting?" Why should or why should I NOT "root" the Vibrant?
3. How much trouble am I going to have, moving everything from the Dash 3G to the Vibrant? On the Dash, music is all stored on the Micro SD Card, so that part shouldn't be too difficult. Will the songs be compatible since I assume they're WMA formatted? I do know some are Mp3 formatted. I use Windows My Phone, to back up the Dash, but I'm thinking that probably won't be compatible with the Android OS. Any other suggestions?
4. Can I get some suggestions/advice on LEGALLY putting movies on the Vibrant?
5. I've read a lot about GPS issues, with the Vibrant. GPS, using TeleNav, works exceptionally well, with the Dash 3G and I use it a lot. Am I going to have issues with the Vibrant? I have a paid subscription to TeleNav. Should I keep this subscription or cancel it and use Google Map instead?
6. Somewhat related to #5...lol. IF I were to cancel the paid subscription to TeleNav, I'd consider paying for the subscription to MobiTv. Is it worth it?
7. I'm totally unfamiliar with Android Apps, although I'm sure there's a lot more available than what Windows Mobile had to offer. Any suggestions?
8. I want to be ready for the upgrade to Android 2.2, when it's available. What software or apps should I avoid, that may cause problems with the 2.2 upgrade?
Hmmm, I think that's about it...FOR NOW. I'm sure I'll have a ton more to ask, once I get the phone in my hands and find I'm unable to figure anything out...lol. I'm afraid this is going to be the first phone I own, where I'll actually have to open up the "owners manual," lol.
on the note of Micro SD i had a hell of a time getting my 16GB micros SD to work in my Vibrant I had it formatted for my I900 Omnia (WM 6.5) and everytime i tried getting it to format/read in my Vibrant I kept getting a SD card corrupt/Damaged Notification. My GF has a Blackberry Curve and somehow formatting the card in her Blackberry got it to work in my Vibrant lol.
All your music will work on your vibrant however. the phone comes with a micro Usb wall/usb 2.0 cord. plug it into your comp pull the dropdown on the phone down click "mount" and Viola windows will show both the phones internal and external storage as drives so you can drag and drop.
as for Movies legally it's the same as music you have to own an original copy of the product at home, and the movies/songs must be for personal use only.
Telenav as a GPS program seems really subpar compared to the navi program I had on my Nokia N95 I just do use Google Maps with 3G connection it's accurate enough to help you navigate most places.
MobiTV personally i think it's garbage theres to many streaming sites online that i can watch individual movies and/or series for free. Not to mention huge battery drain for streaming that much data on the go. If however you go that route consider Buying a Spare battery for those times when you have no charger available.
I know i'm slightly backward on answering questions here but the learning curve for this phone is so easy it's not even funny. theres far more to these phones then there is to Windows Mobile 6.1/6.5 but they are so much more user friendly. everything is literally right there at your finger tips. Almost everything is self explanatory straight out of the box.
easiest way to explain "Rooting" is think windows on your Comp you have an administrator account right? that account can literally do anything it wants. where is a normal user only has limited privileges. Rooting your phone gives you "administrative privileges" thus the ability to edit and play with things a standard user doesn't have access to. n the Note of Rooting, do so at your own risk. And make sure you have researched rooting and the benefits of it prior to doing so to make sure that it is for you. i did it strictly for theming and customization.
As for movies, they would be movies that I own, on DVD. I just have no idea how to get them from DVD, to the Vibrant...lol.
Would it be possible to get some links to Streaming movie sites that would work well, on the Vibrant?
Also, what, if any, browser should I install on the Vibrant?

You simply need to take those DVD's and put them in your computer and turn them into a format the phone can watch (the Vibrant can watch most common types so that shouldn't be a issue).

edit: then just copy it to your phone

Not much, besides the touch screen typing but swype is awesome and I personally would never buy a keyboard phone anymore.

"Rooting" is like jailbreaking for the iPhone. It gives you more control over your device.

I never used telenav, I see it a complete waste of money when I DO USE Google Nav and it works great for me. Although the phones GPS is wonky Samsung stated that they will fix it coming september so it should improve.

Nothing. When the update rolls around it will most likely be a message on the phone asking you to update the software. There will be nothing that will get in the way of the update.
Enjoy your new phone. Hope this helped. If you have anymore questions don't be shy to ask.
As the title states, suggest away.

Jesus, how many times is this going to be brought up? The function is NOT there, and it was known BEFORE any device came out. Quit the *****ing and get a phone that supports it, or move on.
Anyways, I'd like a good sports app like Sportacular that has notifications when games start, during and after with the scores. Fantasy updates with custom rosters would be great too.
Not sure what the SDK will let you do, but is it possible to develop an app that can be pinned to the start page, that toggles 3g/wifi/bluetooth? I know we can just drop in to the Settings menu, but I would pay for an app that put those three in one easy place.
I would also like an app that rotates, like a slideshow I guess, all sorts of images from the various Xbox games I've been playing across the tile. That would look cool on the start page. Maybe it does a Bing image search to find the images to rotate, etc. I'm not a developer, but it was something I thought of earlier today.

this is comming in dec development almost done..
The direct sync with outlook is not possible with the WP7 SDK. That would have to be incorporated into the Zune sync software. The WP7 is meant to be a cloud device so I don't see this coming anytime soon.
The idea about toggling the radios is also not possible im afraid. The SDK does not give developers any direct access to the hardware like that. Hell, we can't even adjust the volume.

That really blows. Just thinking about what various iPhone and Android apps can do easily, it seems this platform is much more closed than even iPhone's. The key to both Android and iPhones success has been as much the developer community as it has been the solid hardware the apps run on, maybe even more so the developers. The new WP7 hardware seems solid enough so far. If MS doesn't open up the SDK to a greater array of components, this will just continue to lag behind, even fall farther behind.
...Hoping someone can cook up some nice WP7 ROM's

There's already one in the Marketplace for free. You have to have the YouTube app installed to use it, but it allows for searching, etc. from within the App.

This is supposedly coming in January according to reports this morning. See: http://www.wpcentral.com/rumor-january-firmware-update-wp7-include-custom-ringer-support-more
(Sorry, forgot to multi-quote.)
not sure if you can make do this or not, but I would like to be able to connect to hidden networks. Also be able to use the device as a wifi router.
Could it be made downward compatible? It would be nice to be able to run some of my already-purchased software.
As an alternative, the single-largest bummer of making this switch for me will be loss of the two coolest apps I have EVER had – “Pocket Earth”, and “Pocket World” by Bluepoint Studios. These apps, especially Pocket Earth, were stunning! I don’t know their status, but if you could buy the rights and the code and somehow rewrite them for WP7, I suspect you would do very well.
I need programs which are NOT web-dependent. Dictionaries, translation programs, an atlas, etc. which are device-based. Traveling internationally is where one needs the language converters and I work a lot on the plane. I’d prefer to give up space in the device than to continually pay for international data.
Best of luck,
Dave

A recorder...
There are a few out there, but I need it to either have voice activated start/stop, or stop/start control from my bluetooth. I am a sports photographer, and if I can describe what is on a picture that I take right after I take it, it is much easier to do my captioning when I get home. But I don't have time to take the phone out of my pocket and start/stop after each play.
It seems a lot of the suggestions are things to do with hardware. The only hardware access the SDK gives developers is the GPS, Accelerometer, and the radio. We don't even have direct access to the camera. (When an app takes a picture, it opens the camera app then sends the taken picture back to the app).

Will we ever be able to watch high quality youtube vids over 3g. Now you have to be on wifi. I know on iphone the vids are HQ over 3g.
1) Something that bypasses Exchange-enforced password entry. Android has it; and frankly, PIN enforcement is a meaningless layer of security that does nothing more than inconvenience the end-user.
2) Something that let's you copy synced Calendar entries and Contacts to the Phone instead of forcing them to exist in the stupid cloud. <--I would pay good money for this. Again, something that Android let's you do that I like.
Edited to Add:
3) An app that keeps the phone on and unlocked. I don't like this forced lock/timeout thing, I'd prefer to have complete control of when it is locked and when it isn't.
1) A Remote Desktop Application compatable with MS's current RDP services
2) Something that periodically rotates the Logon Screen Picture
3) Something that would quickly display Battery Life, Used/Remaining Storage, etc...

Just a few things I have noticed while using the Xoom.
Overall l have enjoyed the experience, with a few caveats.
1. I have had several force closes, but usually only on apps that are for mobile, usally if a mobile app is not going to work it will never work, in other words not random, some times though an app will work if started in the portrait position rather than landscape. Some force closes will be random, again on the mobile apps most of all, but be cleared buy a reboot. Most average users will never notice the problems I have, but I like to screw with things and push the technology by 10 tenths, I'm evil.
2. I had orb working for a little while with the andro orb free AP (the regulation orb app never worked), but now it refuses to load video or audio and even when it did run I would not call the video quality, "watchable", I think that loading one of the additional players might have killed it. It seems that honeycomb has not worked all the hooks for opening files with another program, I have been sure that I could open certain types of streaming content with the players I have loaded, but android will not pull up the option menu for me to select the proper program.
3. I have heard it is possible to side load flash without the update, but haven't seen a guide on how to accomplish this, this could potentially allow you to open Orb content via the browser, and I have heard with better results (Heard of it on the Nexus).
4. Audio Galaxy has been one of the few bright points with streaming content, works flawlessly, and it is the only player that I have found will continue to play content after the Xoom has been suspended, I have not however tried the built in audio player, I am trying to avoid loading media content and work straight by stream.
5. I have used 2 seperate RDP programs and while both worked I have to say I prefer remote RDP light over Pocket cloud.
6. Used my first bitorrent client (wifi), the first one I tried did not work, but aDownloader worked great, seemed to give me an error at first (flashed up to fast for me to see it), but completed the download no problem.
7. Games, well, hit and miss, again some of the games built for mobile just forced closed right off the bat, but at least one, laberynth 3D worked but the accelerometer was back words, huh, others worked but the game controlls were to close to some of the xooms soft buttons and would either pause the game when hit or just close out. I have installed an SNES emulator Snesoid, and it worked fairly well, the dpad positioning was off, but workable, and in some respects made holding the Xoom easier while playing (controls at opposite corners), but I still need to get used to playing Snes games on a tablet, might be just because it has been a couple of years.
7A. Android games well, I have to say overall I am highly impressed with the graphics of some of these newer games, but man they are hard to control, some the movement action are so fast that I feel like I am constantly moving in circles to accomplish even simple tasks, that is not fun, I imagine that someone will come up with a proper bluetooh controller, maybe even from a keyboard enabled cell phone (bluetooth), until then some of us "oldsters" might be a bit hard pressed to enjoy the full functionality offered by the Tegra 2.
8. Email, while this tablet was specifically designed by a company that, hello, does email, I have come across a few problems with file types either not being recognised or again, not "hooking" to the proper programs already installed.
Overall like I said, I like what I see, and most of the stuff that I have problems with seems to be primarily software issues, and hence fixable. The streaming issues are the most anoying, I have a lot of content on my home PC and have no desire to move, convert, or otherwise replicate material I already have in one usable format, I work in the networking field with training in cloud infrastructure, data is data, I want a convenient platform to access the data I already have, from any device, from anywhere, that is the ideal, but I have to live in reality.

I should add, since I typed this all out on my Xoom, that I love the keyboard so far, one caveat, since my spelling and grammer are a bit lacking, I would love the ability for a spelling/grammer checker to "ride herd" over every app.

If you enable it in the settings, there is the ability to turn on a spell checker in portrait mode only. Not grammar though.
Yep, thanks that works, but it still doesn't mark out my mistakes after I have typed the words, only suggests words as I type, what I would like is an overriding program that will mark out all my errors after I have completed typing so that I can easily go back over my document, forum post, email, what have you, and correct after the typing has been completed.

I have recently bought a Samsung Vibrant (T959) and being new to the Android universe I have been doing quite a bit of head scratching. Before you jump to the conclusion that I am one of those that just refuses to do research when faced with a problem (and resort to spamming help forums with threads like: “how do I make a call?” or “I know my phone is ON but why is my screen BLACK!?!?!?!?!?”) or that I am simply a dumbass, let me say that I since flashed to Trigger ROM 3.2 on the suggestion of (and with help from) the all around awesome fellow s15274n, and am learning more about the Android system every day. I believe that most of you will be familiar with the saying, "you can't go swimming without getting wet," (or similar paraphrasing), but it seems to me that in the realm of Android moding the saying goes a bit different, "you can't get wet without jumping in the deep end."
Now that I have "jumped in the deep end" at the nudging of s15274n I have a much better understanding of flashing, ClockworkMod Recovery, ROM Manager and more, however in the case of downloading flv and swf file I have run into so many dead ends that I am starting to wonder if I really am just a dumbass. I have searched Google and xda without much success, some people mention Download Crutch (the last posts on this were dated late 2008) and some replied that the abilities of the aforementioned program are available in Linda and Astro, but after downloading I can't figure out how to make them actually "download" anything. I know there is a way to download stuff from YouTube, but I don't really surf YouTube that much. On my PC I use Orbit Downloader for ALL my downloading needs (if you don't have it, GET IT!), but I can't find something similar for Android.
Before I close I’ll fill you in on my situation. I have a Samsung Vibrant (3G). I am running Trigger 3.2 and have Flash 10.3 and a number of Flash “Players.” I am on the $30 a month T-Mobile plan which only gives me only 30MB per month, I can get a “unlimited day pass” for $1.50, but after the first 30MB the data rate slow so that video streaming is impractical to say the least. I would like to be able to download a movie or tv show (or mayhap something even less PG…or even R) using wifi to view later.
I suspect that there is a way to do so and that I am just missing something very fundamental as there are almost no recent threads on this and some people seem to imply that they are doing it, they just don’t say how.
I know that this is probably just a wee bit long for such a noobishly simple question, but hours of frustration have left me with some issues to work out. While I am on the subject, has anyone been able to watch megavideo without being redirected to that STUPID F%^&ING game website?
In closing, I find Flash withdrawal to be quite drag and I would be eternally grateful help getting my fix.
Robert
P.S. I think I may have posted this in the wrong forum, oops...
