What's wrong about SE? - XPERIA X10 General

Hi everybody
I've started this topic to share with you some of my wonderis regarding SE way of doing bussines. I mean why you promote a phone with some nice specs to a couple of costumers, just to show them a glance of heaven, and after that just spend an entire year trying to develop ando 2.1 and release that in a market where is allready history. Look at htc and other who are allready running 2.2. How far behind are they. This phone is theire flag ship. Android 2.2 is a couple of months olld... so based on this facts SE will be on top of the market... when? Something else: you got a nice processor and you only put 384 ram, when outthere top end devices got over 500 ram. Why is that SE is doing only half of the job wright. Is that a winning mentality? I bought this phone in the begining of september for 200 pounds becouse i wanted a device with gps cap. and i do not regret the choice i have made but i got a feeling that i could have done better... My last phone was a nokia 6210
so for me xperia x10 is a big step forward. Other stuffs: look
at time and mediascape witch are real nice stuff (this two are putting SE on top of the market and differentiate SE from the rest) but its just not enough...xperia x10 will never have the blink of a hd2 or nexus or iphone or whatever... becouse they restraint themself. Why? I really dont have a clue. What if the coming update will be a complete mess... hd rec and autofocus sound nice...but other will be running 2.2 with the same capabilities if not better. So in conclusion, SE had the chance to be on the top of their game but they started wrong (nice processor but only 384 ram) ,they continued wrong with unbelievable long time to develop a working 2.1(witch should have been relesed sometime in june or july just to be in the same pace, not in front, with the market) and they will do very wrong if they dont come fast with a new device that can be a real competitor for the beasts from the market. Xperia x10 is allready a lost cause.
Thank you for your time and please feel free to share your opinion.

Arrogance.
They still think that Nokia is their only competition, and if it wasn't for EU law that made it a requirement to standardize chargers they would still be using their fastport connector.

so you open thread about the poor marketing skills
closed there is no point to it and it isn't contructive

App Request. Urgent Devs!! [Humor]

Since I got my Xperia X10, I have been following xda forum quiet regularly. I started to notice a trend in the posts of Xperia X10 threads. This trend is commonly known as Kubler-Ross model or "5 stages of grief".
1st Stage: Denial- "No we have Multitouch..........it just needs to be rooted"
2nd Stage: Anger- "F** SE, A**h**e SE, I will never buy their products etc...."
3rd Stage: Bargaining- "OK if Paul starts working on it then we can have the root"
4th Stage: Depression- "I will not be fooled by SE again, going to HTC next time...." or "Iphone has a good operating system"
5th Stage: Aceptance-"Well it does what the box says......"
I am currently between 3 and 4, but there are lots of ppl in stage 2. And they are cursing each other in Android Developement thread. I am not sure how much developement has been done but I can see very well the stages of grief going on. This is becoming a serious issue now
I think the dev should just stop whatever they are doing and make an app, which just say "Everything is OK, it's JUST a phone".
Non devs please state your stage of grief. Only by consulting and more discussing about your stage of grief, will make you feel better. So please write your stage and how many time you click on refresh and how is this effecting your life
Hi, my name is Bikram. I press the refresh buttom atleast 4 times within an hour. This is making me unproductive at job.
rofl, I can't believe i just read that post. stage 3
isn't it an achievement SE made this trend?
since it's not happening anywhere but SE thread so i am supposed this is SE problem not we user
anyway i am 2,3,4

haha, great thread!
i'm at a quasi-state 4. I'm still an SE fan, but since I'm with T-Mobile and need a good Android with the 1700 band, I'm getting my first non-SE phone ever, and picking up a Nexus One.
If SE learns from it's mistakes about skimping on hardware and taking ages for software updates, and makes a good X10 successor, I'll be more than happy to give SE another shot.

You might be right, but let's be honest--if (a big if) SE decided to change it's frustrating ways and really knock it out of the park on a future Android phone, won't all of us be flocking to get it and flaunting our SE fan credentials?
I'll stay an SE fan, but with Froyo out and Gingerbread coming in Q4, and Nexus One being a rooted and well supported phone, I have to put practicalities above brand loyalty when it comes to shelling out $500+.
I'm between 4 & 5. Accepting its comfortably the best phone i ever owned. With equal measure of annoyance that SE have ' gone dark' on us. Ace thread by the way!

i have no idea how much time you been frustrating with SE but for me i already experienced on w960 and x1 now x10 is the third time they made a nice looking and decent hardware device out of the competition because they took a hell of long time to develope their horrible os before they launch the product and have no problem giving their so called flagship product out there with unbearable cripple which is cause by software issue.
so if you ask me do i think they will do it again the next time?
i think they'll not even hesitate to do so!
I guess there is another stage after 5 for ppl waiting 2.2 and other cool things that can make x10 the perfect phone
Mugur

I think i skiped all those stages, I've been a long term fan of SE and accept them even with their many failings! As for the x10 i love it, its been a while since i've had a touch screen phone (had a p900 then went to candybar phones for a while) so i'm enjoying being back and having a weath of apps at my fingertips. I bought the phone fully aware that it was 1.6 and that SE said it would be in q4 before the big update comes (which I take to mean 'at some time after q4', I've been with se way too long to beleive a definate when they give it!) so i'm happy with my purchase.
As for issues and bugs its had this is all standard stuff with a new anything, especially when its something new for the company too, its something you have to accept as an alpha consumer otherwise you will drive yourself mad with frustration!
Stage two and I'm sending the bill for my anger management classes to SE lol. I hit refresh more times than I can count in a day (at least a dozen times during my morning b m). I need help, I'm going to go for addictions counselling tomorrow. They think I need to go through the 12 step program. It's just hard admitting I have a problem.

Well, i'm probably stage 5 from the beginning.
I knew what i'll buy.
What i don't like about SE?
They are slow as a donkey riding a pig.
What i don't like about N1? Is made by HTC.
What i don't like about HTC? Well, is HTC.
I wish i could buy the Motoroi or Galaxy S had at least a flash light like X10
oh crap, looks like I hit stage 4, I was actually impressed with apples updates in ios4 I can't believe I actually considered owning one of those useless idevices again
stage 4 ,but i already have htc phone but windows os not android (hd2)
I know full well what to expect from SE after owning the X1 and X2. The X2 is on it's way back now and I am getting an x10 in return. Heck if I could get my money back I would! However, the X10 is one sexy looking phone, you gotta give it that.
I did a lot of research on what the X10 can and can't do, and I am prepared for that, so I wont get angry. Trust me, it's nothing compared to MR1 on the X2... ugh! I would have gone with another brand based on that alone, but we can only hope the updates come complete and pre-tested for the X10. After the mess they made on the X2, I am sure they want to take their time to release the latest updates.
Multi touch? who knows, maybe SE is limiting multi touch on purpose to keep Apple off their lawsuit radar
I have been in stage 5 since a month before i even got it, couse, like iv'e said on several threads here hating everyting, i knew what i was paying for couse i did my homework. And one can not just assume root comes to every device. I happy with my phone, yet though i am starting to get really confused about the so called "may upgrade" and will it contain onefinger-pinch-zoom? I hope so. Cheers!

Yup, i just read that and I feel sorry for our X10.but it's common from engadget.Hopefully the 2.1 update will do the X10 justice and bring it to the place it deserves
not until it can shoot laser beam or give us x-ray vision. I doubt 2.1 will even help.
Just wait until sony announce their secret project X.

As good as the X10 is, they deserve all the flack they get for being so slow at releasing the 2.1 update.
I'd take an X10 over a Galaxy S any day but the polish that is lacking in 1.6 compared to 2.1 is quite evident and it can be quite frustrating considering the X10 has very capable hardware.
Every company is slow with major updates.
The UX for the X10 went pretty deep.
It took almost 2 months for an official release with froyo for the nexus one.
Be patient and enjoy a solid phone.
I understand feeling the need to defend the X10, but nothing Engadget said is necessarily wrong. It's no longer a great phone compared to the phones that are out today, and that's what reviews are all about.
When there's loads of phones out there running 2.1/2.2 with 4"+ screens, with multi-touch, and without a laggy skin, what advantage does the x10 really have? None. It may be very well built, and it may run what it does very well, but there are many phones that do all that and more.
Engadget has done nothing to blame....every word in the review is true..
i could not understand the customization being done Sony on 2.1 which is preventing them from releasing it early.
i still dont think that there is a phone out there today that i would choose over the x10. Galaxy, iphone etc... X10 is unique for me in many ways i really love the phone even with 1.6. this review is true but is misleading people towards not liking the phone, and really its one of the best phones out there. they can write the same review but put it in a different way and have people like it like i do. its weird why they do that.
Sent from my X10i using the XDA mobile application powered by Tapatalk
the review seems fair, when i bought my x10 6 months ago it was the best hardware on the market and that made up for older software.
Now there are quite a few 4"+ screens, 8mp camera's and most new phones have 2.1 or 2.2, the x10 is now in middle/lower half of the high end market.
I think buyers in the high end market expect their device to stay high end for more than 6 months and I personally think 2 years worth of device support is reasonable.
if it wasn't for XDA - i'd be changing my phone every 3 months( as opposed to every 6 - lol)

I just have my hands on Samsung Galaxy S and frankly, I don't like the build quality of the phone as it is like any Samsung phones with cheap plastics and the feel is not as great as X10.
Galaxy S do have front camera but it does not have rear LED flash which is always my concern when getting a Camera phone, I can live without the front camera but not without the LED Flash on the rear of the phone.
It does have the front 2 buttons, Menu and Go Back button based on touch sensor which is quite good but the build quality really makes me feel like not touching it for long period.
Till now, I still enjoy playing with my X10 and holding it on my hand to show off though it is still on Android 1.6.
I would get the Iphone for my gf, but not for myself. It's got a nice UI but I don't see what is better about the Iphone compared to the top android phones. The price is just too high.
SE is a good manufacturer, but I think they could use a fresh wind over their company. They make excellent pieces of hardware, but their software is usually not something to write home about.
The reason I chose the X10 over the other phones was because SE doesn't make so many variations of one phone. Just look at the Samsung Omnia. You have over 5 different versions of that one.
I just want a manufacturer to make one phone that does it all. Kind of like SE was claiming they did with the X10. Then they can make one downgraded lower budget version like the X10 mini pro. I think they should've only released the X10 mini pro but then call that one X10 mini.
My sis got the Omnia at that time, and within a short period the Omnia HD appeared. I don't know how she felt, but I would feel a bit scammed...

tbh, i don't think a lot has changed in the market over the last 6 months. there are no new phones that have say, 1.5/2ghz/tegra/tegra2 processors, 1gb or rom/ram. the x10 has the same specs as the phones that are still coming out now.
the only thing in that was the 2.1 and 2.2, and we're getting an update within a month with the promise of continued support. x10 is equally as high end as the nexus one, which is equally as high end as the captivate which is equally as high end as the droid X. the only real distinguishing features are in terms of aesthetic design, where the x10 clearly wins.
Samsung and Nokia does that, they'll make so many variation of the same model, so they can grab the whole range of buyer. Like for example, the Nokia 5800, they made so many variation of the same hardware specs that I lost count already, they will just change some little thing, remove something, change housing, and it's a different model already. Save them a lot of money on R&D, I guess...
Maybe SE should start doing that too...

I think SE has made a good move by introducing X10 Mini Pro and X10 Mini to the X10 family as X10 as they are actually capturing different demands from end users as X10 Mini might be targeting at ladies as my sister also like the X10 Mini so much cos it is small and handy for their handbags.
As for the X10 Mini Pro targets to guys or ladies which prefer to have a keyboard but having the same size as the X10 Mini cos some might feel X10 a little bulky to them.
That is my opinion.

Okay, assuming all of that to be true. I could still go out today and buy a phone with the same or very similar specs that already has 2.2 on it, not a mere promise of 2.1.
SE made a mistake by releasing it to the American market before pushing out the 2.1 update. It's a six month old phone with a version of the OS that many (especially among tech journalists) consider antiquated. This might be fine for the X10 Mini's, but for their flagship smartphone? No, that's for a completely different market segment who tend to do a little more research before making a purchase.
Take a look at the X10 mini review on Engadget a couple of days back. It got an excellent review even though it's running 1.6 as well and has lower specifications than the X10 proper. The is because the Mini isn't meant to be a top of the line phone. It excels at what it is meant to do. The X10 proper is meant to be a top of the line Android phone. It does not excel at this, clearly.

Good luck. I returned my Captivate to buy the X10. The Samsung is fantastic on paper and has a gorgeous screen. It's not as fantastic in everyday use, though. It's laggy and phone reception is poor. GPS is broken almost completely, but that should be resolved soon. I loved it for a week and then started getting annoyed at all of the little things.
btw, that Engadget review is a joke. Any phone that doesn't have an Apple on it can't get higher than an 8/10 as the iP4 got a 9/10 and nothing could ever top that phone in their minds.

The mini off contract actually cost more than the X10 for AT&T that they were reviewing. It's only $350. So with the money being similar there's no way I would pick the mini over the X10.
Sony kinda deserved it. By the time they release the update in September all the other phones would already have 2.2 and perhaps looking into 3.0. Not that I don't like this phone, I love the design, camera, etc. But no MT and an old OS is definately a pulldown.

A Open E-Mail to Sony Ericsson from a Fan

PLEASE NOTE: THIS THREAD IS CREATED BECAUSE I SINCERLY LIKE SE AND NOT FOR BASHING SE. IF YOU WANT TO TROLL OR BASH SE CREATE A NEW THREAD
Dear Sony,
I am one of your avid Fan. Right from the beginning I was using SE phones only. To Mention a few I have used F500i, J230, K750, W810i, K810i, W980, W705 and now X10. So as you can see I was using SE right from 2004. I can say “If you have Once used Sony Erricson, you will always use SonyEricsson”.
Let me be very clear. I love you so much. I have defended SE in many forums from many trolls and iSheep bashers for many years. I did this because I love SE and I believe you will always gives me what is best out there.
But off late you are not living up to your fans belief. What the is wrong with you?
The last master piece from you was W810i. After that all your products disappoint me. K810i, W910i and W980i all of them were total disappointment for me. Off late all your products follow a certain approach, you will announce a very good product and then there will tremendous delays in bringing it to the market, after that i will have many software bugs and hardware failures. So before the product becomes complete it will become outdated..
If you refuse to believe I will give you proof.
Do you know W810i was announced in Feb ’06 and availability was Mar ’06.
K810i was announced in Feb’07 and availability was Apr 07.
W980 was announced in Feb’ 08 and availability was Aug 08.
W705 was announced in Oct’ 08 and availability was May 09.
Satio was announced in Feb’09 and availability was Nov ’09.
And Xperia X1, X2 and X10 every kid knows its delays and bugs.
What happened to you SE? There were long delays. Even after delays none of these phones lived up to its hype ( W980,W705, Satio and X10). You were the first to announce many technologies (8MP, 12MP camera, snapdragon with android phone, even 4" screen) but you were the last to bring it to the market with sky high prices. Where is my Old SE? where I can get all latest tech in a budget phone? Where are you SE?
And Like a Crown for all your failure, the X10 2.1 update. When other are pushing to bring 2.2 for their flag ship device, you cant even bring 2.1 to your Flag ship phone. Instead of bringing 2.2, you are back porting live wallpaper and 5 home screens to 1.6.
WHY THE HELL YOU ARE RE-INVENTING THE WHEEL?
Stop wasting your precious resources in back porting things. Move more resource to bring 2.2 to X10. If you cant alteast please open the bootloader.
X10 had everything to make you success but you missed it.. Good Design, Good Hardware (at Nov '09 nobody had this hardware) and Good Name (You have loyal fan base) and Perfect time (Think if it had been released during Christmas time).
X10 could have been your own iPhone or Droid. It could have been your golden egg but you missed it. What going on in your mind SE? If I can think all these, cant the armani wearing million dollar salaried EO's think? Have you lost it?
We have defended you so long SE but you are now disappointing us more. You even embarrass us by saying you turned down google (X10 as Nexus one would have been epic). Please don’t cheat us more SE. We love you but there is a limit for our patience. If you keep cheating us then Even God (I believe he is there) cant save you.
All I can say is please bring out Froyo update for X10 soon and with no bugs (We dont want 1000 new features we just want Bug less phone). After all you are a more talented company and you certainly deserve a second chance like Moto.
Please SE don’t disappoint us again and save yourself from bankruptcy. Please Make us Believe
---- A sincere, beaten, disappointed and embarrassed Sony Ericsson Fan .
A couple points:
- If you ever want to be taken seriously in any capacity, refrain from foul language.
- Also, refrain from referring to things as "iCrap". Shows a lack of class.
- Live Wallpapers and 5 home screens are default 2.1 features, not being backported from 2.2
- Pricing depends on region. In Japan, the United States, and several other countries, the X10 is the cheapest or one of the cheapest smartphones available. It's free in many markets.
- The X10 is Docomo's highest selling smartphone of all time, and is poised to become their best selling phone of the year/ever. Japan is the world's second biggest market.
Good day sir!

I believe he is there But no Offense (Original post edited to reflect my view)
IF some one could send this to SE CEO, I would be glad. Or If you can pm me his mail-id, I will send it myself.
Thanks
No offense but what do you think you reach by sending this kind of letter to a CEO? No matter which company he is leading, this really is a "straight in the dustbin" letter for those managers...
Again no offense, you wrote down what you think, but I want to bet he don't read till the half of it, to try that out, you might put in the last sentence something about him having an affair with a dead horse, if you dont get anything back, I proved my point....

Gotta agree with PollPixx.
imo they don't go past the subject of e-mails... snail mail is a thing of past.
moreover they don't go over this stuff personally but their PA's etc do... separate the junk out and send in the "really important" stuff... but only god knows what that is (apart from them )
Looking away from the language, it is a fine letter to SE.
I have also only had SE phones private, starting with the old
Ericsson 318, Erisson t68
t280, t610, k530, k750, k810, k850
c905
w595, w715, w760
x10, x10 mini, x10 mini pro
My 3 kids have all had SE W595 and now they all have X10 mini.
Also i have only used SE for work in many years, currently i have a x10 mini pro...
At work it have been me that have decided what phones we have bought and used for the last 3-4 years, so i have been the main reason that we have only bought SE phones...
- that is over 250 SE phones all together, at work...
(I know that it is NOTHING in the big picture looking from SE headquarters, still it must count for something)
In this answer i just want to ad my own dissapointment thoug...
The main problems is that the big X10 is missing the FM-radio, missing the better headset connection and missing the one finger zoom, while the two cheap small X10 mini models have those things.
What is that about SE ?
Why have you decided to make 3 different X10 series phones, and then at the same time make the TOP model, the one with the weakest features ?
I am really dissapointed with you SE, the lack of updates, the missing features in the X10 top model.
From (i think it was) the old T610, or was it K750, and all the way up to now, my SE phones have allways had FM radio build in, and that was for me a loved feature, then you decide to release the X10 without FM Radio, and after that you again decide to put in FM radio in the mini´s ??
I know i didn´t read close enough in the specs when i bought my X10, but i really was expecting that there would be FM radio in an SE phone, and offcource there would be in the top model, no question about that. What a dissapointment !
An other lack is that tracker (step counter) that was build in i think all the newer phones eg. W595 and W715, now with X10 i again see a loved feature removed, why ?
I find it strange that good working features that SE implement in your phones, is removed again from newer phones.
Features that actually IS the SE brand, features that we learn to love and use every day, you decide to remove.
Why ?
I don´t get the point in making that huge effort to make a few nice new features like timescape and mediascape, and becource of those features you have been left behind, and are currently stock on Android 1,6, and right now we all are waiting for S/E-Android 2.1,, ONLY Android 2,1 when other companies like HTC are moving away from Android 2.1 and on to Android 2.2...
S/E why not release Android 2.2 fast and be the leader in the marked.
Then let people decide for them self IF they want the S/E signature-features like TimeScape and MediaScape when you have those ready later.
Just make new features avalible from your fine PlayNOW system just like you did with CreaTouch.
Why have you at the same time decided to lock down the bootloader of the X10 when Android is a brand new OS you are just learning ??
- release the bootloader now, and look what happen, learn from it and then when you are actually doing a better job coding the OS than other DEV´s on the www, you can decide if you again will lock down bootloaders in your future android phones.
At the moment it make no sense at all, not to let your dev-team learn all they can about what can be done with the hardware you have made.
The hardware is actually really great, and solid build, it is "only" the software that is the problem...
Now i move on to the strange thing about wide range of current phone models you have on the marked.
Why that many, is that really nessesserry at all, really ??
Why not make an effort to be the absolutly best there is on a mutch smaller range of phones, only focus on a few models, perhaps only android phones, as you have said that you want to be world leaders in Android powered phones in a few years anyway.
As i see it you only need one X10 model more to have a complete set of phones, so there will be at least one that souit everyone.
Add one more X10 mini and make it with an old style slide out t9 keyboard.
At last.
I have also been thinking about jumping over to an other brand, and perhaps also look for other phones next time we need some at work, as i am that dissapointed with SE...
But private i find my self thinking that i perhaps just should wait and get the X12 when that is released...
Can i really be that stupid, REALLY ???
- dispite my dissapointment with SE, really ???
SE you are SO lucky that you have a big and loving fan base...
At work i KNOW that SE have the best hardware and the lack of features i mentioned here is no problem in work use...
Again SE you are REALLY lucky that you have a big loving fan base...
Just DON`T dissapoint us anymore !

Anyway i dont think religious dribble should be in an email like that to a company. Makes you look like a bit of a fruit cake.

I won't bother replying to the rest...but, my X10 has one.
It's called the Android Market, you can download anything, including pedometers.
At least they all look familiar and have similar sounding names - X5, X8, X10, X10 mini, X10 mini pro. SE are trying to satisfy each segment of the market, just like their competitors HTC, Samsung, Motorola and Nokia do.
@iead1
Is there something you're not telling us? Like who you work for.
Please dont embarass yourself. Your grammar is atrocious.
How about buying an AD on newspaper, and then I'm sure the SE CEO will see this.
sony in general is a big comany, my family has been buying sony things for at least 20 years (got an old and really old stereo which still works o.0)
they always had the best things in the marker, we even say if it's a sony is good
in the past I never used SE, just used nokia or motorola but when i saw the x1 i just felt in love, but when I knew that no wm 6.5 would arrive to it i was so pissed we paid a lot for it to get nothing more, same applies for the x10
i know companies want to get more profits but where's the customer's satisfaction? they use to think that is better to have loyal customers for a long term instead of just having a lot for few months (kinda the thing is going on today)

Yes, but those on marked is far from working as good as the one in eg. w715...
- and if you was actually using it, you would know that ;-)
Anything ?
- then throw me a link to an fm radio application for the x10, or to one finger zoom perhaps, or to any of the other things that the x10 don't have, that the mini's and all the old SE phones have... *LOL*
Send from my X10, still without 2.1 *&%#
I think that the live wall paper and home screens reference has to do with the SE Japan release of Ambientime which has 5 home screens, pseudocode live wallpapers and a new lock/unlock swipe which is more animated.
That app looks like work that was done as an assessment of the phone's potential to do live wallpapers. It's sort of interesting even if it makes the phone laggy and lockup.
iead1 said:

Sony ericsson likes the update game

we have been through a very harsh process of finally getting the 2.1 update on our phones, SE said to have another update on the UIX by december and now I have seen the multi touch working officialy by Rikard on the SE Blog, said by him to have it enabled by the next year Q1 with another update.
This looks like the guys over SE likes to keep their users kind of frustrated with future hopes of getting the phone better with updates, I'm starting to think that they see this like a game

If they are updating the OS frequently it only shows how they care for their device and want it to be better in my opinion.
Why does it bother you if they are working on an update?

Versus the non-update game SE typically does?
I'm fine with them improving our phones. Bring it on SE!
Btw there isn't an update in December....that was pushed to "early 2011" and my guess is that multitouch will be included in that update

I think the update comming out to SEUS 31/03-11 (The day before the 4. Quarter)
Maybe Sony Ericsson dont have lots os programmers, and they are not good enough to do the things before the others, the Android 1.6 are ver good costumized by SE, but there are things that needs to be programmed, like:
- Multitouch (driver)
- 16M colors (driver)
- Audio (actual driver is very bad)
- Android 2.2 (costumize and optimize to X10)
I would rather say that they have very good cryptographic team, because that is from what I can see, the best they have on their hardware.
The update in December is delayed to Q1, its the same as the one Rikard mentioned. However this will be another big update, not just enabling partial MT. Though the FW is set to launch in early January, so we should see alot of these new FW stuff at CES which I'll also be there

Any idea what the other features are? (*hint* - froyo ? )
Update game or not, im personally fine with it and I think it only shows SE cares about us and the device. They weren't going to implement multi touch but I think they chose to do so because of us the users. If you ask me I say bravo to SE and this might restore some faith into the SE bashers.....it could be a possible sign for froyo.

The X10 was, up to just recently, an incredibly crippled phone. Officially running 1.6 into the tenth month of 2010 is an embarrassment. I wouldn't laugh at anyone who decided to cut their losses and look for a better alternative.
The devs on XDA deserve a lot of credit for their perseverance. It is them that made this phone relevant again. Not SE's "brilliant engineers".

Personally I'm still very resentful towards SE and will not buy nor recommend any of their products for a least a couple years. The whole talking up THEIR "brilliant engineers" is just more bull**** and pisses me off, is that supposed to be a slap in the face to all the devs out there working to fix their mistakes? Why not tell us the truth about the hardware all along? Why cripple your phone with outdated buggy software and program it not to have multi-touch? What is the incentive there?
At least they're finally listening to all the negative feedback they've been getting, but still...a big part of me wanted to see the devs accomplish multi-touch and Froyo before SE.

They LIED about the MT since the beginning man. They said the screen was resistive and not capacitive and now they say "oh...we didn't realize it was capacitive. sorry!" Right they didn't...they do not know their own hardware they are developing for?
They do not care...they launched a phone with an outdated OS when 2.1 was already out and it took them 6 months to skin it and add in their branded goods. Now the X12 is going to be launched with 2.1 when 3.0 will be out upon its launch...see a trend here? I personally do not think they care and will never buy another SE phone. Pretty sure many feel the same...see the value of the X10's on eBay now? Dirt and yet the Nexus, older, is selling for $500+ still with the vanilla OS on it. What does that tell you? Function over fashion. Bring on the 2.2 ROM from Jerpelea & Z That will be the saving grace for me and allow me to keep this phone a bit longer. Pretty much every other newer Android phone out there has MT so this phone getting MT after almost a year really is not something to be excited over. Especially when it will only be enabled for surfing and Google maps!?

There's a lot of hate for SE, but as long as they try to improve the SE experience for those with SE phones, I'm happy. Could they be doing better? Just enabling MT for the X10 is so much more than what they have done in the past. Maybe it's because I had a Nokia as my last phone that I'm happy with any substantial improvement in the OS, haha.
I forgot where I read it, but the turnaround time from new OS to handset is roughly 4 months (it used to be nearly 12 months). Froyo (2.2) came out in May and it's only been in the last couple months where handsets have been getting 2.2. The exception is the N1, but then again, that was sold as a phone for enthusiasts (and pretty much what they're using to test it on). When Gingerbread (2.3) comes out, you can expect at least another 4 months before it gets pushed OTA (besides the N1 and the NS). As they learn Android, I'm sure they'll be faster in issuing updates. Motorola was (and sometimes is) pretty slow in pushing updates for their phones but now they're cranking it out.
In regards to multi-touch... Did they ever say resistive? They were up front when they said it wasn't going to have MT. Yeah, but I agree they should have had it on the X10 in the first place. The N1 didn't have MT at first and they were quick to add it. Nexus One's MT is the same as the future X10 MT. They both are designed for pinch to zoom applications, its a limitation found in the hardware. Games will work but it will have the same multi-touch limitations as the N1. And of course - phones that have just come out have better multitouch... they're newer phones based on newer chipsets which use newer technologies.
I dont get the big idea about MT, its not a big thing, hardly use it on my wildfire.
In regards to the x10 launched with 1.6 for me it was running better than any other device with 2.1 on there. Touch wood but ive never had any problems apart from the in ear volume. So what if the value has dropped. Its the sentimental value that counts.
I praise the devs for their hardwork. Also SE...however i will say Rikard and SE need to get off their fat arses and stop delaying everything.

i think ur taking it too far man...personally i think 1.6 was pretty good and after i updated to 2.1 i was very pleased. the updating was easy and i easily restored my contacts using the default backup and restore app
the battery life on the x10 is incredible, consitently get about 2 full days of regular usage(surfing net before classes, a little talking, some txting and listening to 1-2 hrs of music everyday). while my friend with the iphone 4 complains about terrible battery and dropped calls(he has a case too!)
the phone looks very nice and feels solid, the software isn't "buggy" i haven't had any problems with it at all(no root or anything btw). and the 2.1 version is soo smooth and looks very nice compared to say a stock android 2.1. people complain about mediascape and timescape, but personally i love them timescape doesn't use too much cpu if u disable the services (like txt, email, fb, etc) and mediascape is miles ahead of android in media playing ability.
and just to remind you, those engineers are working very hard, remember they have to develop the software for the phone from scratch and optimize every bit of it, and yes the developers here do a lot of work, but they just have to fix what the engineers messed up or modify some files, and with thousands of lines of code, its easy to mess up somewhere. im a chemical engineering major right now, and i dont know anything about computers, but in general engineers are very bright people and probably know what they are doing better than what we do.
though im not a se fanboy (this is my first se product and might be my last) some people need to tone it down. stop ranting against se like theyre the antichrist. this is my first android phone so i was still amazed with my phone even with 1.6. (android 1.6 is waaaaay better than ios 3.0) and after flashing to 2.1 my phone is enough to make my friends agree that my x10 is better than one of our friend's iphone 4 (i wouldnt be so sure of that but when they see me multitasking with widgets, live wallpaper, H connection what evr the hell that is, and removeable parts like batteries, memory, sim, etc. its hard to disagree) i will admit the x10 is nerfed by se but if you wanted a phone that focused more on android rather than custom software you should have done your research. i knew from the begining that my phone was an "android" but with se's "timescape and mediascape" ontop of "1.6" which is outdated. i also read that mt wasnt available and most likely wouldnt be. these are the things that piss people off yet these are the things you always see in online reviews, the research isnt hard. i knew what i was reading before i even knew what the terms fully meant. luckily we have devs to help fix these problems, but as i said earlier once i can upgrade i doubt ill get a se phone again (unless that psphone turns out to be real and stable, that thing looks sweet)

one think we should thank to the updates is that the price of the device that had dropped very down, maybe getting up right now.
so we have:
android 2.1,
1ghz,
4 inches
and
MT coming soon.
Try to catch a phone with those features with less than 360 bucks on ebay, only the X10.
I was thinking to getting the droid 2 GSM when it comes out, but now I really like my phone with those new things.
And the upcoming android 2.2 will be very welcome among us
SE works hard to make their devices with a pleasant experience, just like apple do with their iphones that have the best out-of-the-box experience among smartphone. even if Sony doesn't have the best state of the art technology on the world of android, we cannot deny that the UI has been carefully finished.
and btw, the x10 with 2.1 is among the best battery life GSM android phones right now, just ask someone who owns a Evo 4G about battery life and you will get it
Note: the H up there means HSDPA, which is commonly known as 3.5G for internet access, sometimes it will go to 3G again because of low signal or very congested network
I love the update game and hope it continues since it feels like I have a new phone every time a big update comes out. I find it incredible that people complain about SE keeping the promise they made to support the phone for 2 years.

An interesting observation - SE using cat-string theory as its main business practice

i am a business management student...so i thought of sharing my perspective over how Sony Ericsson is playing the smartphone game...
by exagerrating a lot before the product launch ...and after the launch..giving small doses of updates so customers dont change phone in the hope of getting new features.
think of it..
they build great hype for a product months before the launch by strong advertising (probably spending more on ads than R&D itself) , promising a revolutionary interface with ground breaking custom interfaces....X panels for X1 (remember?) and timescape/mediascape (biggest garbage) for X10 ..both over-ambitious
just so they can differentiate from other companies..
ya they have great product design.. which initially attracts impulse buyers...they build anticipation...so we cant wait to get our hands on their phone!
and then they finally launch the product which will NEVER have the latest updates because their entire focus was on marketing the product i.e bringing it to market before competition and capturing market share.
they never really focussed on industry shaking R&D like Apple..c'mon without Apple, touchscreen was a dead market.
and without Android...Apple had a monopoly.
This is revolution....not timescape or mediascape..which are my least favourite apps...battery sucking with extremely slow response rates.
then they ll keep launching small small updates over couple of months...more like over a year...adding little features..so we dont change brand loyalty....giving the wounded customers a faint vision of hope...
finally they release a small update and the entire community goes 'wow' with excitement...like a virgin getting his first blowjob.
by that time..the phone has suffered scratches, has started showing signs of wear..which means very low re-sale value.
and meanwhile announcement for newer model is made...slimmer, sexier with more bugs which will be fixed via update over the next upcoming year.
good strategy for a short-term profit making....but they are losing brand loyalty.
i am not gonna buy SE Xperia Arc...ya its the sexiest phone on the market.
but its like a hot model u bang and can never have a healthy relationship with...coz she is dumb and full of flaws on the inside...such as daddy issues etc.
/rant
its like they keep us jumping over small small updates like a cat does to a string which the master will never let it catch.
but its like a hot model u bang and can never have a healthy relationship with...coz she is dumb and full of flaws on the inside...such as daddy issues etc.
epic comment
well it's true and from your perspective which one is better?
i know getting a big income is the main focus of any company but hey customers loyalty also counts. it's something i hate from sony in general, they keep pushing new tech every year and let the customer to feel outdated

so what do you think about HTC's strategy with Desire ( Desire/HD/Z )
Just because they released a better handset after a year of the previous handset's release it doesn't mean that they do not care about brand loyalty...
so what? you want them to stick with the X10 for two years while other competitors advance with technology????
believe it or not, many will buy the ARC, even more that who bought the X10...
Next time, go buy an HTC or Motorola
and by the way, Samsung is locking their bootloader so do not buy a Samsung android so you won't end up whining like many here about unlocking it, unless you like samsung
but despite all that, I would like to thank you for the effort made by you to explain what many of us are not aware of.. it's a good practice for your uni
good luck mate with your studies

Very well written, kudos to you Nocturnal310...
@Nocturnal310:
Of course you're right. But as someone said before, you could say this about any company producing technical stuff and you would be right as well. (I expect some very negative comments on what I'm about to say...). I understand your point, but I just don't think that SE is somehow different in their approach from any other company producing consumer goods (is that right? stuff which are bought in great numbers just to be replaced by newer models...you know, we have to watch out for our English, right iead1? ). Thats quite important because we just can't expect infinite support for our product, because sooner or later (the former is more probable) it will get replaced with brand new model with brand new stuff inside making it lot more attractive. The only thing we can complain about is, that the support may have last longer... thats true. But despite all of that, I'm still not changing the brand loyalty as I just dont know what else should I buy next time. I dont like Apple and their iStuff, also don't like HTCs because of how they look. Samsung is an option, but if I should choose between Samsung and SE just by looking at the phones, SE would definitely win (and with Samsung locking their bootloaders as well, I wouldn't help myself much by buying it). You may call me a hardcore fan of SE who doesn't think about what he's buying, but thats not me. I just think that X10 was an unfortunate mistake (which I personally still love!) of SE and I really hope they will learn from it for the reasons mentioned above.
Thats my opinion and I do not force anyone to share it, but I wanted to say it, because I just don't uderstand all that poeople saying how betrayed they feel by SE.
i think SE`s problem is that they don`t really know what they do,at least so far.
they use UIQ for a while then they leave it.
they use win mo,but after x1 and x2 they desided to go for android.
but now Android is very good platform and they should find their way.i hope so.
their main mistake is that they don`t care about customers and the weak points of their products.
I must add my mustard ...
There was a time long ago, Sony Ericsson created really nice phones with a solid build quality. My x10 is 3 weeks old and is making crazy noises when twisted a bit. The whole frame is not stiff enough.
If I saw it right on arc video presentations at youtube, the crappy timescape is now a widget and it is still choppy. This uggly blue is still there. Why blue? SE colors are Green and Orange. What a bunch of stupid designers ... I think w'll have a lot of alternatives out there with lesser crappy UI-Mods.
Well, I agree with most of your points, but let's remember: they're not ceasing support, they're launching a new model and planningto lock x10 customers in outdated Android. Motorola intended to do that too, but customers did such a big buzz that they changed their minds. The bull**** about low performance on Android 2.2 is already discarded, we can see that on all the unofficially built ROMs available at xda-forums. I risk to say that even Google has his part on this entire drama. Obviously, Sony Ericsson and their UXP loaded with much more processing hunger than x10 can support is the one we should blame, because we chose to buy SE, not Google devices (which are HTC, actually ). The removal of MediaScape from Arc tells us that they know where the problem is. Let's hope they fix this "problem" on x10 too.
I truly hope no one takes my comments personally, since I'm just expressing my opinion as a SE consumer. I still like them, but not how they use my money.

Apple Iphone 3G is still getting latest updates - same day as the latest iPhone 4, not ALL the features because it's got old hardware but there aware of that.
SE should be aware of it to, yes x10 can run 2.1 2.2, 2.3 ect so they should. There opinion is why there not updating. (why not the majority, the users decide)
Why can't we get hardware based updates? HTC magic/hero got tons of updates..
Yes new models will come out, but it's the same OS to update, not that much off a difference, our devs do there work in spare time and takes 2-3 weeks to come up with ASOP OS, (which is what i prefer anyway). Imagine an entire DEV team full time? yes it takes more time for testing ect but still.....
At least SE have reconized they F'd up. that's the first step!

They say a lot. Saying and doing are not the same.

The removal of MediaScape from Arc tells us that they know where the problem is. Let's hope they fix this "problem" on x10 too.

I think they removed the mediascape app because it was so hard to new people to find the music player and photo gallery.
just think about it:
you have a new phone, and you would like to play some music, you first go to the music player but you can't find it because there is no music icon on the menu
Grab a samsung phone and try to play some music, the player is called "Music", the video player is "Videos" and the gallery is "Gallery"

You are comparing with 2 companies with different calibers.
Apple - every designer/ad agency/design house/design school in this world purchase their 'godly' machines for work purposes. And these macs don't come cheap, mind you. With that amount of revenue, they can afford to create an iPhone, using their 'lagless' (yeah, right) macintosh reputations to breed a colony of iZombies to support their cause.
With the iZombies having the need to own a iAmagodlyproduct, with such supporters pumping money into their pockets, they can afford to offset any losses by being nice to
Update old iPhones even if new models are out, cos they know iZombies are already impressed with them playing the nice card and that they are confident that with their good reputation and a better new phone out, A majority of iZombies who have too much money to spare will still buy it. They are just giving an aww-I understand-you-can't-afford-a-new-phone-yet-so-I-will-update-you-periodically-so-that-you-will-come-back-to-me-when-you-have-money message to the poorer parties.
Now for Sony Ericsson (or just insert any other brand names). Let me ask you. Though they are an established brand, but let me ask you, how many people will own 1 of those expensive TVs or VAIOS? Comparing with Apple, no competition.
They don't have that much extra revenue to play nice. They can only strategize and try to earn as such as possible before their products become obsolete.
It's just like people like Donald Trump, who has so much money to play with, he can just give away to some random person on the street if he wants to. But if you try doing up a business yourself, would you give away your money to charity organizations, knowing that you cannot afford to spend the money that way? Most probably not. Unless you don't mind closing down your business due to losses.
All these threads are getting sooooooo repetitive!!! There should be one big sticky for anyone who wants to ***** and complain in any way shape and form about SE. That way this form isn't flooded with every thread turning into a SE bashing thread. It really is getting tiring logging on to see what's new and the first 50 threads are people *****in about SE.
Sent from my X10a using XDA App
Lonelee - agree with much of what you say.. but it is also true that there are many many many people who go back time and time again to buy the next apple product BECAUSE they know that Apple will not leave the OS lagging behind on the old device when a new one comes out.. it's spectacularly good brand loyalty. SE (and many other) are taking a very short term view, and a missing a great opportunity to get us all on the hook for the next product..
In the UK for example, many phones bought on contract are free with a 2 yr contract tie in.. so if I know that they will look after me for 2 years, then I'll go back for more.. my contract's not due until Feb 2012.. so I'm eagerly awaiting to see their behaviour over the next 12 months!
well I m back on XDA after exiting from blackberry platform...blackberry provided me a stable messaging device for a while but as needs changed, it was very poor for browsing and getting work with attachments done.
i was at a party few weeks ago and my friend took out his Xperia Z claiming this is the best camera phone.
to his disappointment, it was the darkest blurriest pic i have seen whereas my lumia 920 took a pic with DSLR-like clarity and image characteristics.
i am not sure how much sony has improved but seems like they are still a market follower and using marketing dollars to brag about their phones that do not perform as advertised.
after having wasted my student savings on 2 of their phones, I regret and wish I had bought a better phone for my first android experience.
product lifecycle
Hi,
I am not sure if I should blame any company for moving to newer (and maybe better) products. In the android phone market we have the nearly unique situation to be able to get our hands and minds at the software which is driving the product, at least partly.
This is quite different from cars or coffeemakers.
What I would like to from Sony is that when they decide to abandon a product (eg X10), they open up the sources of drivers etc, so that interested people can maintain their products for themselves.
I can understand that they wont open up the sources for current products.
A.
