Keyboard typing slow? - Epic 4G General

When I used the hardware keyboard it always misses a lot of the letters I put in.
Does this happen to anyone else?

Yep. I think a lot of people are experiencing this. It's almost hilarious in a way.
See this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=782203

I returned my Epic for this reason and swapped it for the Evo after reading other reports of this issue and then having it confirmed by the guy at the Sprint store who also owns the Epic.
IMO the bulk added by the keyboard as well as the looseness of the mechanism causing a gap between the keyboard and screen made it not worth keeping if the keyboard isn't even going to work properly despite these issues.
I say either keep returning them until you get one that works right or get a different phone while you still can.

All The Issues I've Found

Physical:
- Speaker phone doesn't work -- at all!
- Keyboard rubs, plastic on plastic will be worn out soon and look ****ty
- Light leak above menu keys on the sides
- Track pad isn't consistent. Mostly it's correct in direction swipe.
- GPS takes a while to locate but is usually very precise.
- Keyboard has non-intuitive layout.
Software:
- Messages (text) constantly has "1 message" or more displayed permanently
- MyFaves duplicates notifications and is ****ty to look at.
- Google Sky Maps doesn't focus properly
- Can't remove some applications
- No "Link All" contacts with Twitter/FB
- No way to reprogram "MyFave" button to another program.
Phone Recommendation: Avoid this phone.
updated:
Physical:
- Installing and Uninstalling a different speaker phone app has "enabled" it, for me at least.
- Light leak is really, really bad. Can see light through the side of the shell (near buttons).
- No dust in my phone, daily use. I don't really spend much time in dusty areas.
- Track pad still inconsistent
- GPS is amazingly accurate. Down to the address (not a range).
- Keyboard is still feeling awkward. After 3 weeks I'm still not used to it.
Software:
- Same problems.
New Discoveries:
Software:
- Contacts manager for text messaging shows multiples of EACH contact, including the "Linked" together contacts. I'm seeing 8 entries for a person with 2 contact numbers.
- Auto Orientation doesn't work when the screen is closed for "HOME" screen.

Ha! So your G1 is superior? Atleast you can still return the phone! Btw take everyone off of your faves thing and it won't go off, and try ending it with an app manager. Speaker phone is just as low in any of the non rooted phones with out the audio mod. Same with the not being able to remove apps. The sliding gets a lot better. The messaging thing has been posted in the bugs thread. You can use handcent if it bothers you too much or if I recall there was a widget app that does the same thing but changes the icon, but I bet it has its quirks too.
Physical:
- Speaker phone doesn't work -- at all! No problems with mine here.. maybe you got a defective one
- Keyboard rubs, plastic on plastic will be worn out soon and look ****ty it goes away after a bit. I have strong doubts that it will ever leave physical marks on anything important
- Light leak above menu keys on the sides Come on... really? If that little bit bothers you, maybe you're just better off not owning a phone.
- Track pad isn't consistent. Mostly it's correct in direction swipe. I'll give you this one. It's not the best feature thats for sure
- GPS takes a while to locate but is usually very precise. Mine has always been quick and dead accurate
- Keyboard has non-intuitive layout. I went from a G1 to a Cliq to this phone, and this one has the best HWK of the 3, in my opinion.
Software:
- Messages (text) constantly has "1 message" or more displayed permanently Use Handcent. It allows much more flexibility and customization anyways.
- MyFaves duplicates notifications and is ****ty to look at. MyFaves sucks, don't use it if you don't like it.
- Google Sky Maps doesn't focus properly It's a lousy app and I've never seen it properly display anything on any Android phone I've used it on.
- Can't remove some applications Get used to it. Even on vanilla Android you can't remove useless apps.
- No "Link All" contacts with Twitter/FB Mine linked most of mine automatically, and the ones that weren't automatic were easy and quick to do.
- No way to reprogram "MyFave" button to another program. I'm sure it will come with root.
Phone Recommendation: Avoid this phone. Go ahead and return it and keep your G1. I'll take the Slide over just about ANY Android phone out right now.

turboyo pretty much said the same thing, but I figured I would reiterate it for you. I'm tired of people *****ing on here about this phone and this or that or what not. You're one of those people that would buy any phone and immediately post on a forum every diminutive little issue you find. It's a brand new phone. It's bound to have bugs. If you can't deal with that, don't buy it, or wait 6 months to buy it.
I wonder if it would make most people feel better about the phone if they were forced to use an old Startac handset for a week.
x2 on the sliding getting better over time
at first it scared me and i almost thought i had a defective unit but either its better or i just got used to sliding it out.
All the issues and bugs that are being reported, I have not had any. So far the slide has been my best phone. No complains here.
If you drag out a new message shortcut out of the launcher and onto the home screen where your current message widget is it clears out the number. then discard the shortcut..

Don't read a complaint thread if you're tired of it.
Yes, I am unsatisfied with a light leak, the sliding, the software errors, the gps, the star maps. These are the perks of this phone. I didn't pay to be a beta tester. I expect my phone to look and function properly.
My G1 didn't get wild with star maps or gps. Wouldn't we progress forward after 2 years?
Do you go buy a brand new car that has a dent or scratch on it and just pay full price -- not complaining?
Man I had a g1 on launch day and used it up until I got this phone. I loved the g1 and I love this phone, My only complaint has to do with just relearning on a 4 row keyboard as opposed to a 5 row, and really my only prob is the tab key is where my thumb feels the a key should be so I keep having to backspace but I'll live.
I almost didn't order this phone thinking a "better" sliding qwerty phone was coming but as nothing solid was on the horizon I went ahead. Super happy with the purchase.

90% of what you're talking about here is topical, and more than likely jsut your phone impaticular. Do you go buy a brand new car and complain about the car as a whole just beacuse of a few scratches and dents and tell people to go buy anotehr car beacuse of it? No, you take it back and either have it fixed, or you get a replacement,
Physical:
- Speaker phone doesn't work -- at all! Ive used my speaker phone more than Ive used it regularly, the volume cant be maxed out or it gets a tad distorted, however, if it doesnt work "at all" your phone is defective.
- Keyboard rubs, plastic on plastic will be worn out soon this is fact and look ****ty this is...fortuine telling? Ive heavly used my slide, and the noise is already gone, and doesnt look "****ty"
- Light leak above menu keys on the sides again, I see no signs of this, and I use the phone a lot, I even just took it out just now and looked at it from all angles, your phone really may be defective.
- Track pad isn't consistent. Mostly it's correct in direction swipe. Ill somewhat agree with this, my issue with it is that the track pad is a rectangle....but its facing the wrong direction when the keboard is slid out, which is 90% of the time when it would be in use. That was just bad engineering.
- GPS takes a while to locate but is usually very precise. In the City (Chicago) in the outer suburbs, and out in the boondocks 3 hrs away, it locates just as fast as my Garmin and my TomTom
- Keyboard has non-intuitive layout. Im not sure why they at least didn't shade down either the Letters or Numbers. They could have done without thw home key, he menu key, the tab key and made them slightly larger. But thats all really nitpicking, as Ive pretty much already gotten used to the keyboard.
Software:
- Messages (text) constantly has "1 message" or more displayed permanently Defective
- MyFaves duplicates notifications and is ****ty to look at. Why are you useing MyFaves?
- Google Sky Maps doesn't focus properly Cant comment, dont have it.
- Can't remove some applications Are you new?
- No "Link All" contacts with Twitter/FB I also hate that my phone doesnt make me toast in the morning. I mean, I paid good money for this thing.
- No way to reprogram "MyFave" button to another program. That kinda pissed me off, making it a definite part of the UI was pure Tmo duchebagery
Phone Recommendation: Seriously may want to return your phone and get one that works as it should
I have never had a "perfect" car to drive, nor have I ever even seen or heard of one. I'm pretty sure if they made one it would be called a Rolls Royce and be expensive as hell. If I wanted to be critical I could go with the old "why is it not waterproof and babysit when I wanna go out and drink beer with the guys". Five years ago this phone was out of everyones ability to even manufacture. I hear complaints at work all day, but it an extremely rare occasion when someone offers a solution. My motto is "if you don't like it, fix it". Or at the very least, look for someone who has.
ok The only issue I really have is I used Handcent SMS on my g1 but I can NOT find it in the app market with this phone. I did a search on both the G1 and the Slide. The sreach brought up the exact same results only Handcent SMS was listed on the G1 search results and NOT listed on the slide one. Anyone have an idea behind this at all?

Yea, I came from a cliq too, and I too was amazed at the differance. Only thing it made me hate was Motorola though.
Ill use 2 tin cans (string optional) before I buy another moto phone.

Ah, there you go. I was forgetting the biggest one to hate. And yeah I guess I retract my previous statement. I can't hate Android for what Motorola effed up.
Just got my MT3G Slide yesterday; it is really a GREAT phone. Not sure what's going on with the poster's phone but mine has absolutely none of those issues. Kinda makes me wonder if he/she even has one. Buyer's remorse is there for a reason and I would not hesitate to return the Slide if i didn't think it was an absolute upgrade from the G1, MT3G, Cliq or CliqXT. I am a hardcore G1 root user and I was EXTREMELY skeptical of this phone; I am a skeptic no longer. I'm not even worried about root as I have no immediate need for an ad-hoc data tether nor any real desire for flashing experimental ROM's. Best phone I've ever owned, hands down.
I picked the slide up Monday and I love it so far.
I have noticed the light leaking through the bottom of the case, when I am in a dark room. But that doesn't bother me, I've seen this on other decives as well.
The speed of this phone is very impressive, even with all the crap that Tmobile put on it out of the box! But I would like to root this phone so I can get rid of the stuff I am not using. Just bothers me having it there.

Keyboard Wiggle?

Hi I wanted to know if it was just my phone possibly, but when I slide open the keyboard there is space for the upper screen portion to slightly jiggle up and down. Are people's epic keyboards sitting flush with zero wiggle?
Mine jiggles a bit.
You don't need to start a new thread when there are multiple threads already open.
All slider phones have some wiggle to them if you shake them hard enough.
posted from a EPIC4G.
The one thing I've learned from these forums is that I am not the only one who is seriously ocd about my gadgets. No offense intended - it's just nice to know that I am not the only one who is bothered by "little" things like a loose (or perceived as loose) keyboard. Frankly I cannot stand hardware keyboards, and have traditionally avoided them. Unfortunately, I wanted the Samsung Galaxy S, and I wanted it on Sprint (their coverage is simply the best for my needs/location). I found a solution for the keyboard - but it is not a practical solution if you plan on using the keyboard. I think I will leave it at that.

[Q] My only concern about the Epic

I'm pretty content with my Epic so far. I've had it since November and have had no major issues with it and any I did have I was able to fix (no gps after flash, fixed thanks to Epic community, unresponsive screen orientation, fixed thanks to epic community again).
But I'm noticing a potential problem that I'm afraid no one here will be able to fix.
One of the minor gripes I have with my Epic is that whenever I press the top right button on my phone to either lock or unlock it, I ever so slightly apply some pressure with my fingers as if I wanted to push the screen up to slide out the keyboard. The amount of pressure my fingers are giving is minuscule but I'm already noticing that my phone no longer is as firm as it was 90 days ago.
This troubles me because I hardly ever use the keyboard, in fact, I only used it several times the first month to try out some emulators but gave up on it because the keyboard just isnt that great for it. My fear is that this phone is going to get as loose as the epics you find at the Sprint stores in less than a year!
Dont get me wrong, I dont expect the sliding mechanism to be strong forever, but I am pretty surprised that the phone is already feeling loose and I dont even use the physical keyboard
My question to you all is are any of you experiencing the same problem? How about those who use the keyboard frequently? Is there any way we can "re-tighten" whatever it is that is getting loose??
My phone is only 2months old and when the keyboard is shut and you look at it from the volume side I have a huge gap there. The slider is a little loose not to bad. My problem is just the gap issue. If I press on the left side of my screen you can literally see the left side of the screen go down due to that gap. I'm gonna be exchanging it soon I just don't feel like it cause my setup is finished and I just dont feel like doing it again.
I notice the epic case set helps it from feeling as loose now.

It is what it is...
There are multiple causes for the screen wobble effect, and once it gets loose, much like a fine woman's _____, there's not much you can do to fix the situation. I've read on here how people have taken their epic's apart to try and tighten the slider but it's just not possible unless you send it back to samsung to have them do it. However, there are a few solutions insofar as mitigating one's "noticing" it on a daily basis. Both the Otterbox and Seidio Active X are nice cases and once they are attached, there is not really any screen wobble effect due to the way the cases fit. Although, what most people don't realize is that most of the cheap cases that are available for the epic (including the ones at the sprint store and the non-platinum series cases at best buy) are actually to blame for creating the gap between the screen and keyboard in the first place. The way that they clip on to the phone is not very well thought out like on the more expensive cases and the clips sometimes overlap and are simply thicker than they need to be on most of the cheapo cases. I learned this the hard way with my first epic and when I figured it out it was still within the 30 day trial period Sprint gives you with their phones. So i took it back under "false pretenses" and told bestbuy that the earphone speaker quality was ****ty compared to my "friends" Epic and that i wanted to get a different Epic. I've been very careful about which cases I use on my phone from that point on. The Seidio innocase and active x, platinum series, and otterbox cases are all the ones i know for sure that won't cause a "gaping" effect on your phone. All the ones at the sprint store have a negative impact and even the otterbox does just a tad, mainly due to the side clips on the top bezel that clipon by the top row of numbers on the keyboard.
anyways, that's my 2cents

New Epic weird Keyboard

So had to get a new Samsung epic from sprint since my phone messed up. I'm debating if I should go back to the sprint store because the new epic keyboard feels weird sometimes. I'm approaching almost a month so I think I've broke it in. But does anyone remember having there Samsung epic new and the keyboard feeling weird in the beginning and then fixing it self later on. When I say weird-- it's that sometimes the keyboard feels just like I remember my old one worked and then other times it feels like there's a plastic bag behind the keys. Am I paranoid or should I head to Sprint.
I thought it was weird at first but that was from using a TP2 for so long. I still miss that keyboard. If HTC would have slapped that keyboard on an EVO, now that would have been an awesome phone.
The TP2 was the gold standard for keyboards. I've been looking for a new gen phone to match it ever since.
Arrive's is good. I even like the Evo Shift's kb better than our's, but other than that, our phone takes the cake

I know what you mean about the plastic bag, but that's only ever been temporary for me. Honestly though, you'd be better off just sticking with it as they won't replace the phone just for that. They'd put a harvested front half of the phone on, which includes the screen, so you'd be getting a used and non refurbished screen.

I got my replacement from asurion about a month back and I do feel the bubbly feeling behind it. Plus a lot of skipped keys even with the keyboard patch. It was brand new too, not a refurb. Im trying to break the buttons in myself by pressing them.. it seems to be getting better on most keys.
cd's or tapes?

Thinking about picking one up tomorrow. Are defects really a huge issue?

The forums seem to be full of "Do you have defects?" posts, with tons of responses citing things like the screen being unattached from the case, dead pixels, auto rotate that doesn't work, a screen that is cracked even from a 2 ft fall, etc.
I'm just wondering if the devices they're shipping now are any different than the very first batch? Have they tried to fix any of these problems, or are these problems so rare that they're not doing anything about it? I hear that Google has a fantastic customer service policy as long as you get it from the Play Store and NOT Gamestop/retail, so I'll definitely be getting one straight from google.
Are these problems something I should worry about? Has Google done anything about them so far?
Thanks! I'm really excited to own this guy... hopefully no issues
They are NOT a huge issue. Remember that people with problems are much louder than those who are happy.
The biggest issue seems to be the slight screen lift on the left side of the screen. My device has it, but it doesn't bother me at all. And if the screen cracks in the future because of it, I will just get it fixed by Asus under the warranty.

Made sure I got one where it is easy as pie to return and that was Walmart. So far mine has been great and I've had it a little over a week and I used it ALOT each day to make sure.
Coming from someone who's screen cracked in my hand, I still can't hold that much of a grudge against the N7. Lemons exist and always will, even in the holy iPad lineup. Just check your device when you pick it up (preferably from a B&M store for easy returning) and if it's good, carry on.
Granted, I'm still a little miffed at ASUS over the whole thing, as I had to really fight to get my tablet fixed, but it's done and almost here at my house. We'll see how the re-unboxing goes. :good:
(fyi, according to the watering hole a good chunk of the N7 complaints may have stemmed from Apple fanboys making accounts just to spam fake issues, seemingly to take credibility away from the N7... lame)
i was also very worried with all the bad news about the nexus 7 but after close examination i have found very minor screen lift but everything else has been perfect
my ipod touch had a creaky screen and my tf101 had some screen lift and creaking but nothing bad came of them.
be sure to fully check it for peace of mind if nothing else but most of all enjoy it and test everything good about it too
