Getting a tad frustrated.. - Epic 4G General

I've tried repeatedly to flash my Epic to another ROM.. I tried w/out wiping first, didn't work. Wiped multiple times.. both cache & data. Turned phone on, one click rooted, one click ClockworkMod.. then I go into Rom Manager. Click "install from SD", it says it needs to reboot into recovery to finish.. THEN I get the red letters saying
E:failed to verify whole-file signature
e:signature verification failed
Installation aborted.

Your in stock recovery. Not actual recovery. You have to get clockworkmod recovery working first

Unless you have a kernel that works with Rom Manager you need to use the volume down camera power on button combo to get into clockworkmod.

Can't use ROM Manager because when it reboots it doesn't go into clockwork. You have to shut the phone off, hold volume down, camera and power on until the phone boots into clockwork. then you can let go and select install from sd or whatever. It's rather obvious at that point.
Ok, honestly the other two posts weren't there when I started mine.

Did you spend any time reading the thread that you downloaded clockwork recovery from? It specifically states what you need to do and why what you are doing doesn't work.

I've tried both ways.. the recovery screen looks the same. I never see anything about an sd card other than "sd card:update.zip". It doesn't let me choose from any of the downloaded roms.

Install clockwork from this post (if you haven't, not through the rom manager)...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=782300
then power off your phone, hold the volume down and the camera button (all the way in, not just the first click), then press and hold the power button, holding all of them until it boots into clockwork recovery. If it doesnt work, your not doing something right, so try, try again...

If your phone has downloaded and installed either of the two OTA's that have come out since the phone has been out this is probably why when you use the one click recovery installer that clockworkmod isn't sticking sprint/samsung put in a check that looks to see if your recovery and kernel are stock and it also prevents a recovery from being flashed to the phone. If this is the case there is a file located in /system/etc called install-recovery.sh that needs to be deleted before you can flash clockworkmod.

The samsung check only runs on boot. It does not prevent recovery from being flashed. Furthermore, the one click flasher removes that script.

Well when i tried flashing a recovery after the first OTA it never stuck until this script was removed no matter how many times I flashed YMMV. Your right though I forgot that the one clicker does remove it.

I couldn't get clockworkmod 2.5.1.0 to install either, from he recovery thread, I downloaded 2.5.0.9 and was able to install that and used the update.zip method on the recovery thread to get 2.5.1.0. Somtimes restorng nandroid knocks out 2.5.1.0 andreverts to 2.5.0.9 so I keep the update.zip on sd just in case. Only thing is 2.5.0.9 is move and k is select.
Just change the file number to 2.5.0.9 off the 2.5.1.0 link in the recovery thread to get that file. Good luck

No recovery mode/Phone with Explanation mark

Ok, I have been thrown for a loop and need some help....
I had a Sprint Hero Rooted on 2.1 the .5 sprint update
Tried to run the new update but it kept getting corrupt.
Did a Nandroid backup
So I reverted back to the .5 RUU
Then it wanted me to update to the old .6 update, so I did
Hoping then I would upgrade to the new .6 but it was not able to find a new update?
Wanted to restore my nandroid update.
When I try to boot into the recovery mode I get a picture of a phone with a red Explanation mark in a triangle.
There is a bunch of people on the net that say they have seen or gotten it, but no one says how to get rid of it? So I can not get in to recovery mode at all.
Tried the home+power boot
Tried the volume down + power then home
always ends in the same screen with no recovery.
Tried multiple times to install the .5 RUU
Reset phone
never can get back there to the recovery?
Phone will boot fine into 2.1 and run fine..
Anyone have any ideas, I have tried everything I can think of.
Thanks
Did u try placing the recovery on ur SD card and flashing it threw terminal on ur phone
Root-Hack-Mod-Always™
You lost root, as far as I remember the .6 update was to block the corrent rooting efforts that you see around here, thats why the rooting instruction say to go back to the .5 ruu.
The corrupted update your getting is just sprints server being bogged down.
What you need todo is go back and re-root your phone. Dont worry about the update untill it gets released into one of the current roms or until you here that its safe todo without losing root.

Thanks, I can't believe I missed that! I had never tried a backup before root, so I did not think about that. Now I know and hopefully this will help someone that googles this issue, as there is never a clear answer until yours.
Thanks again...
So in closing of this thread:
if you are trying to get into recovery and see "Phone with Explanation mark" image.
it's because your phone is not rooted
So root your phone and it's all good
Also If you ever run an ruu on your phone you can kiss your root good bye no matter what version you do. but if you have nand backups you can reroot your phone and then restore one of your backups since there stored on your sdcard.

Correction: If you see this symbol, it means you don't have a custom recovery image in the phone. You can actually be rooted and still get that symbol if you haven't yet flashed a custom recovery after you rooted. You need to have a custom recovery (that requires root) to avoid getting that symbol when you try to boot into recovery.
Most rooting methods on here automatically include flashing a custom recovery as one of the steps, so this isn't really a big issue....but I just wanted to clarify the specifics of this for anyone else who reads.

only way can get there is through flash clockworkmod recovery then select either reboot in recovery mode or turn of handset and restart with home and power button, what ever flash clockworkmod recovery does to make it work as soon as it has been used i am guessing it is deleted or modified,
i have tried running it then checking files on sd card but cant see anything different

The recovery console isn't on your SD card, it's flashed to a partition inside your phone's memory. So you won't see anything different on your card.
And if you can boot into recovery by "restart with home and power button" like you say, then it's working as it should -- that's how you get into recovery.

just had a friendly member point out what i was starting to suspect the problem lies with the custom recovery being flashed back to stock on every restart, the shell command here
/system/etc/install-recovery.sh this stops any custom recovery on reboot. any advice on what tools to edit or remove
Delete that file when you get root I guess. Our as soon as you reboot into clockwork recovery, flash a rom. Use nfinitefx if you want a stock one
Sent from my HERO200 using XDA App
I always had root that was where the confusion was, what i did not know was the script was running with every boot of the handset and removing the recovery that was there as it was identified as unofficial and exclamation mark could be down to me using many methods to flash i may have renamed original recovery so when it goes to exclamation it is because cant find original recovery whether handset is rooted or not.

would that have worked? i thought about it many many times but as i had never flashed before was unsure how many times phone would reset and if it did before it was installed could i lose my recovery.
on the plus side the 2 months i have spent trying to solve this i have a much broader view of the workings of my handset and without the many members like yourself who take the time to reply and try to help others i would have given up a long time ago.

I'm sure if you deleted that script a custom recovery would have stuck

This sound like you are using rom manager to me from the android os. Is this right? If so it also (could be or) sounds like you are entering the default recovery rather than clockwork. Did you install clockwork via one-click or alternative method first?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
One click but I have installed the the one from rom maager..
When the phone reboots from ROM Manager, you need to hold the camera+vol down+power buttons before it starts rebooting.
I tried it already,I just noticed it says android system recovery (2e)
Try turning your phone off than turning on with the three button method. Hold power+volume down+camera. That should get you into clockwork. Lettering should be green and not blue like stock recovery. If it appears blue than you dont have clockwork installed. Try the one click method. It has clockwork redirector which means any apps you may use that has recovery options it'll take you straight to clockwork. Hope this helps.
I have tried that and yes the letters are blue and says android system recovery 2e..is there a manual .img I can flash via adb or terminal emulator I have tried one click that's how I rooted but no luck,I tried rom manager install recovery but no luck.,am starting to miss amon-rec.img but loving the epic so far ..help guys please....the only I can say I miss about the evo is 2.2 but not much

Try the all in one. Its a sticky in the dev section. It roots and installs clockwork with redirector. Or if you can find the one click clockwork recovery alone. Maybe that'll help. Don't ue rom manager so I'm sorry can't help on that app.

It sounds like you don't have CW recovery installed properly. You can't do it from rom manager if you are on stock kernel. Use the newest one click, I think its like version 2.5.5 or something like that. Then boot while holding the 3 buttons. It should bring you to a screen that looks very much like the amon ra recovery (minus the carebear).
Hold down all three buttons until it boots to CWM. If the blue letters still come up then you don't have CWM. The script for the CWM redirector doesn't work properly on my Epic.

Unsure what that means. Does rom manager even install cw? Try the one click. You appear to be doing the right combo to get u to the recovery screen but it seems the default is where you are going to. One click root and cwm with redirector that puppy and let us know how it goes.

[Q] Custom Roms

Hey Guys. Im kind of confused about our phone. To what extent do we have this hacked? Is BravoX the only custom ROM we can use, or can we use others? Thanks
Currently that is the only rom out.

Yeah, it looks as if our lone developer, Bandroidx has essentially abandoned us since finishing BravoX.
I understand slowing down work on further ROMs, but there hasn't been any talk, or an update in a long time now.
Hmm. That really sucks. Well, if anyone else needs someone to be their testing dummy, let me know. Im trying all I can to get us 2.3, but im afraid im not going to be much help. But im here, willing to brick my phone if need be in the name of science .

You should be installing it initially in bandroidx's. Did you wipe data and cache? How far does it boot up?
After you install MIUI you have to use the defy recovery (I use the latest, not the stable), though some things might be broken since was made for the defy. You can make backups and restores, but I wouldn't recommend restoring anything until I post something on it.
If you have anymore problems, go over the the thread so others can see. Thanks

In the bootmenu, select recovery. Then select custom recovery. It should boot into bandroidx's.
Note: after you flash the MIUI rom, you have to use the defy recovery.
Alright. This threads kind of off topic already, but I have one more question. When I go into Bootmenu (Installed with Latest 2ndinit)>>Recovery>>Custom Recovery it goes into some Defy Recovery. When I install 2ndinit cwm stable, it goes into some greenish version of custom recovery, but I cant get into bandroidxs. I cant figure out how to get back into Bravo Recovery!

Is this before or after you flashed miui? This is the order it should be:
Install bandroids recovery
Install 2ndinit
Boot into the boot menu
Select recovery> custom recovery. (it should boot into bandroids)
Wipe data/cache
Install miui + lang pack
boot into miui
Now, since you installed miui, when you select custom recovery>latest/stable in the boot menu, it should be the defy recovery. The defy recovery is supposed to come up, it works on the bravo, it is fully functional. Use the defy recovery to flash zips and make backups/restore.
This is all before MIUI. I follow those steps exactly, and I get taken to this screen

Galaxy Note Hardbrick by flashing Kingdorid ROM - possible eMMC bug- [Help Needed]

Hi, i have a galaxy note GT-N7000 which was running the stock GB out of the box. After updating to ICS using Kies, i rooted the phone and installed SU and it worked fine. I then tried to flash Kingdroid ROM v3 onto my phone after which the phone got stuck on the "Samsung Galaxy Note GT-N7000" boot screen. It does not even go into the boot animation. I cannot access the recovery however the download mode is still accessible. I even tried flashing a stock ROM using ODIN (GB & ICS ROMS) but the setup keeps hanging at the image....
I believe that it is the eMMC bug which i did not know of before flashing. I need help because i have no clue how to fix it and it would really be a pity as i cannot afford a new phone already. Help would be appreciated. Thanks.
OK slow down ,when you flashed it ,did it complete flashing kingdroid from CWM then you manualy rebooted? only to be stuck on samsung logo
or did it hang during CWM flash and rebooted on it's own?
Flash a stock rom with bootloader.
How did you root and flash a custom rom and not stumble accross the hundreds of threads/warnings about the brick/bug?

Thanks.

You skipped the part about being on a safe kernel before flashing Kingdroid. Did you do that or did you use the stock ics kernel to flash kingdroid? You should always read!

when i flashed the kingdroid ROM v3 using CWM touch, everything was fine. The installation completed and then i did a factory reset/wipe and cleared cashe & battery stats & dalvik cashe. After that i rebooted the phone and it never went past the "Galaxy Note GT-N7000" screen. I have tried flashing stock ICS & GB ROMs but they all keep hanging up at image.fs. So is my Note indeed hardbricked?

As a last resort try flashing stock gingerbread with bootloaders using ODIN. If that fails you can try partitioning method as suggested by hg42 or take your device to Samsung service center and tell them it bricked while doing factory reset from settings. Motherboard replacement time.

Ive already tried flashing stock GB with bootloader but it hangs up at "factoryfs.img"! I guess i will have to take it back to Samsung Service Center. But will they charge me for it because the custom binary download shows "1 count"?

No, they won't know binary count. So go ahead.

I would advice you to reset the counter.. try this...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1354888&highlight=triangle+away
you may need to find/make a jig... and follow instruction to the letter..
OK ! If you are completely not successful with everything posted here ......
Try to goto Uggies thread for recovering from a EMMC brick
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1661590
Before that try reinstalling any GB Rom incase you are not emmc bricked.
Download AbyssKernel 3.9 and then do a cwm install of a GB kernel ....
Incase you got ur download mode ready, flash the Abyss kernel or let me know I will guide you thro ADB ..
i tried flashing stock GB ROM with bootloader but now my phone completely refuses to turn on. I think it is bricked for good! i have reported this problem to samsung without mentioning that i installed a custom rom. I told them that the error occurred when i upgraded from GB to ICS. However they are going to charge me a good $50-100 to get it fixed for software issue but even more if hardware problem! I really am in no position to pay so much as i purchased the Note only days back. Will this be covered under warranty and will they know tht i had flashed a custom rom?
why dont u try my thread on bricks ?
See my signature linked to bricks
This definitely works- i've used it and you simply use the patched pit file to flash your rom using pc odin. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1667886

No it doesn't - it works for a select few people. If your damage is in another area, it won't work. If the damage spreads (it has for some people), it won't work. Many people who did that found their device to be highly unstable afterwards.

and the thread title should be changed. he bricked his device while flashing from an unsafe stock kernel, not from kingdroid.

[help] i need help with screwed acer a500

Hi, i recently got myself an acer a500 16gb and decided to root it, i successfully rooted it using ics root 2, then i decided to try and install custom bootloader and rom onto it. to which i was successful, i tried a few roms, and after i had installed the 3rd rom, it started to stick on cyanogenmod loadscreen.
the bootloader i was using was skrilax's bootloader v8, and recover was TWRP.
it seemed that no matter what rom i used, it would install successfully, but always fail to get past loading image ( android / CM logo )
I then decided to reflash the bootloader to a different bootloader, this time, i used skrilax's bootloader v6 with CWM-based recovery v5.5.0.x (thor2002ro rev1.7) at this point i was successful, so i installed a JB rom with GAPPS, all worked well.
worked perfectly until about after an hour or so of use and a few restarts. the tab crashed, so i turned it off by holding power button, tried to turn back on and well, you guessed it, it wont boot...
i tried to reflash again, but every apx bundle i use it says " exact error "bootloader.bin" access denied.
im annoyed with my tab now, ive been searching through xda dev forums for about 3 weeks now and everything ive tried hasnt helped, and i cant find the answer to my problem, i hope theres someone out there who can help me through this lol.
thanks alot!
Did u do a full wipe of data between each new Rom u flashed?
If u still have the v6 or v8 on there, u could try connecting to yr pc and running fastboot to erase userdata, cache and system partitions. Once u erase system your tab will have no OS, so flash a new rom.
Otherwise, run the babsector file making sure u do the wipes between each .bat file and then flashing a new Rom.
It's good practice to fully wipe data and cache before a new Rom flash, and this should be stated in the Rom install instructions.
The babsector file and fast boot steps can be found in the root guide in my sig.

yeah, i did full data wipe as well as cache and dalvik cache.
at the moment, my tab seems to be stuck in APX mode as i turn it on, no vibrate, screen lights up but stays black and way to get into the bootloader (PWR + VOL - dont work either )
I will have a look now and try with babsector, I just hope i can get it back to a custom rom, if not, back to sock BL and ROM.

what do i do?
Put it in the oven....I joke u not!!! U have a faulty memory chip, which explains yr tab acting weird. The only apparent fix ?? is to reflow the solder around the chip, this seems to have helped a few folks who've tried it. There's a thread round here somewhere, I'll post it if I can find it

So, i have put it in the oven and followed the instructions to the T and it allowed me to flash with skrilax's bootloader v8, ive tried to install one ROM so far ( CM mod Acer A500 unofficial ) and that just gets to the cyanogenmod boot screen and hangs there, im gonna reflash with same bootloader, but a different rom. any suggestions?
Did u do a full wipe b4 flashing the Rom,?? I do know that the first boot does take a long time, did u try a reboot, sometimes that helps with th CM roms, other than that m8, maybe try a different one???

yeah i did full wipes of everything, left it to try boot for 2 hours, nothing... tried different roms, now im back to "APX" mode... what do i do, i jus want it working again
M8 I think youve exhausted all possibilities...there's not a lot u can do with a faulty memory chip other than sourcing a new mother board. EBay is yr only hope...

If you're in 'proper' apx mode I.e. download mode showing on screen...could try running nvflash from there... If yr on black screen with led lite on power off - hold in pwr button for 5 secs till lite goes out. Should be able to pwr on normally now
