How should I do this? Do I need a software for my PC then install VLC Remote to my phone? Thanks!
It's easy man, give lots of love to the developers (F3d0r) here at XDA! A donation to the developer or the community (XDA) is a nice thought.
0. Make sure your build includes cifs.ko
1.GET yourself cifs-manager from Market.
2.install then mount your samba shares.
3. Don't forget to add your shares in Windows file sharing or samba in Linux.

Cifs-manager allows you to mount your samba shares on your local filesystem, so this allows you to be able to stream video/audio.
I'm still a "noob" just like you, but now I know it feels good when one can help someone else. Pass it on!

Hello, I tried Cifsmanager but couldn't mount the device...I tried to mount a share on my NAS.
Is this possible? Sorry, I'm a noob!

I swear this worked some time ago on some media player, and I'm not having some "Smoke Two Joints" hazy recollection (fun song, BTW )
Anyone know how to make it possible to play a media file via a network share on our Epics? I can easily access network shares via Astro with the SMB module, or ES File Explorer, and I suspect many other file browsers. However, to play them, I have to copy them over local. The stock video player (which I prefer) barfs on network files.
For a 1GB 720p typical one-hour TV show, this is a real pain. My home network and the Epic have plenty of bandwidth to stream files like this and keep up with real-time playing.
So, anyone know how to make this work? App that I need? Particular media player that works?
Thanks!
EDIT: Solution: CIFSManager, available in the market. You'll need to be rooted, though.
Sounds like a cool app if it exists. Can't remember if samsung allshare did that.
You will have to mount the samba partition, but you need a compatible kernel with cifsmanager and I don't know if we have that yet.
The other option is to run a streaming service on your pc.
Quick google found these options for streaming from pc:
Tversity + nswPlayer
Skifta
VLC Stream

Man, I such a lazy fock sometimes. After posting this thread, I then bothered to search around on the net, and found several threads on various boards about CIFSManager. That's the ticket -- it's awesome, and does exactly what I was looking for.
Now to set up a VPN tunnel into my WinXP box so I can use this from outside my home network too!
BTW, CIFSManager working like a charm with Bonsai 4.0.0. I'd guess it works with 4.0.1 too (can't go there yet because of Voodoo sound, which is fabulous, but screws my homegrown ALSA-based balance control -- I have hearing loss in my right ear).
Only problem found is I get an error trying to unmount shares. Big woop. Reboot.

Anybody know a good vpn server for linux? So many varieties I don't know which one is best for use with cifs...
cd's or tapes?
I just recently purchased the iconia......great device....anyhow to my question..
Is there anyway to play a movie that is on a network share WITHOUT using a streaming client?
Here is what I mean....on my laptop or my other computer on my network, I can go to my media server and pick out a movie, double-click it and it will play.
On the tablet, if I do that, I get an error saying there is no media stream available and starts to download the movie to the tablet before playing.
In my mind, the tablet is just as powerful as a low end laptop, it should be able to do this, as in play a movie that is located on a network share. I have tried a slew of media players and NONE of them will just play a movie that is located on a network share. I realize that the OS is majorly scaled down compared to a full fledged OS like UNIX/windows, but I shouldn't have to stream the media, it should just play. I could understand streaming if I wanted to use a VPN and I wasnt located on my home network. But being on my home network and only having three devices on my network, bandwidth isn't an issue. Its just a total PITA to have to set up a movie to stream on my media server before I can access it on my tablet.
Anyone have any insight or ideas on this?
I hear through the grapevine that VLC may eventually get a full fledged port that is in java that provide that functionality, just like the one for unix/windows, but that will be a loooooong time coming.
Check out the cifs kernel module under the kernel modules thread in dev and then use it in conjunction with the cifs manager to mount shares.
Without rooting you can easely see movies in streaming from your lan devices. You must only install rockplayer and file expert.
After that open file expert add the shared folder on remotes tab.
When you open a remote file you must only choose rockplayer, et voilà, the streaming begin

Indeed, rockplayer works like a champ.
Thanks for your advice..........
Make sure you turn on media streaming on in sharing options on your PC
I use the cifs module plus moboplayer. A perfect pair in my opinion.
I installed rockplayer and already had file expert. Added my share from my server. Tried to play mutiple videos different formats, but nothing happens. I select the file to open it, it opens a browser window to the share and then promtly closes. I never have the option of selecting rockplayer. Tried using a long press on the file and selecting "open with" but the same thing happens. I am trying to access my vids on my home server, in my local network. Anyone have any ideas?
streaming by file expert is fine, until you want to jump to specific time in the video (seeking)
I would say root + cifs is the perfect way.

I am having the same issue on my DroidX (Rooted+Deodexed GB .596)
Right I own a lacie cinema hd (i think thats whats it called) which is like a hard drive that plugs

Just wondering if anyone knows of any decents apps or any other way I could maybe stream

it would make a great little telly at the side of my bed using the dock

Not seen anything on Android that fits that description.
Just transfer anything you want on to your sd beforehand.
Then there's always Dr. Who on BBC iPlayer!
If you have a PS3, you can use the Multimedia Server app in order to stream things. It works pretty nicely.

Transfering movies to my sd card is tiresome and annoying thats why im interested

On android we don't need a transcoding application running on our PC..
Visit This thread. From there instal cifs manager from the market, share a folder on your pc then mount that share on your sdcard
Stream from pc in any app that supports the format

You can get even fancier and setup a vpn at your house and connect to your pc via cifs over the vpn... but ill leave that for another day
Try UPnPlay in the Android marketplace. It sees all my computers. It works great for me. You can navigate through folders on any networked device and then select an app to play the file. I've heard that ES File Explorer can work as well but I use UPnPlay all the time to stream from all my devices. It won't transcode like Air Video Server but it helps get the job done.

Second that, UPnPlay for all your streaming needs.
The problem I have is that in windows Vista and 7 I can’t share any folders not on the C: drive. I have 3 one terabyte drives. C:, E: and D:. Every time I share a non C drive it always tells me I don’t have permissions to access that share when I try to open it from another PC. The same goes for external drives. They all have the same permissions set.
I have never had problems
Streaming” from those drives.
P.S. Folder sharing should never be called streaming. It confuses the noobs.
UPnPlay sounds good im gonna try that out now I just need a decent video player that supports
Avi lol
edit: OK using Upnplay in conjunction with mobo player works flawlessly now watching bad lieutenant over
my home network quality
Thankyou for your replys
On my old Windows Phone, I was always able to click on a media file and it would instantly start buffering and then start playing. With Android, I can't seem to stream. How do I get Root Explorer to access the LAN?
Maybe I've typed it wrong...
Root Explorer will download the file.
File Manager HD (Honeycomb) will ask you what to do with it and you'll be able to stream it.
You can access LAN if you install cifs module for your kernel and use mount manager or similar app to mount the shares.

Either is fine, but UPNPlay worked great!!!! Skifta didn't load folders with a large amount of videos, but UPN worked perfectly (AND solved my other problem thread regarding thumbnails of videos).
Thanks so much for the suggestions!
Is there anything decent for SMB?
Wow, I gotta say that UpNPlay works extremely well. It(paired with moboplayer) does everything I need it to do. Good suggestion. Since I could never get clear.fi to work, I assumed it was just a native 3.0 issue and I would have to wait til 3.1 for it to get fixed.

Actually it's quite the opposite with my device.
But I'm using CIFS so maybe it behaves differently because Root Explorer always downloads and File Manager always opens files on my device when I'm using CIFS to access networks shares.
I got my Iconia today after 'testing' the display model at my work.
I have been using Buzz Player, which I also use on my iPhone (don't hate me for it)
I can stream videos across the network from from NAS plugged directly into router
Cheers

no,

its a root server there are my movies saved i want to stream to my tablet.
any idea
you can browse your ubuntu server with samba, so it will work like a nas
Agreed, I use ES File Explorer and MX Player (because of fast s/w decoding) to stream videos from my Ubuntu PC
I use Plex... can stream wherever I am via 3G or Wifi..
Otherwise if your videos aren't encoded in such a way to allow good decoding as described by the suggestions above you could try Plex. The media server will transcode on the fly to your tablet. Works okay but obviously quality is reduced compared to proper encodes done specifically for the tablet.

Yeah, I find the quality isn't the best away from home because I only have a 2.5mbps upload speed but at home, it looks great. Away from home, I typically only use the app at the gym when I do my cardio so quality isn't a huge deal to me.
Subsonic (also streams music). It's a bit hard to install for a non-techie person, but there are instructions online. You also have to donate to use it for life-time. There is a 30 day trial for Android. The videos aren't great quality like HD, but it's like SD from what I've experienced. It has a web interface and uses flash for the videos.
Try diceplayer.
diceplayer supports SMB/FTP protocols.

anybody recently tried out to stream it over SMB ???
or on other systems like SGS II or similar Android ?

You could always do what I do and just run an Apache HTTP server and then
Code:
ln /videofiles /var/www/video
That is what I do and this allows me to view my movies from anywhere just by dialing up the IP address.
Of course, you still need a player that will play whatever format you are using, in my case all of my stuff is mp4 so I just use the stock, though I find DicePlayer works best for the random .avi I have.
