I have a fascinate which i bought outright for use as a GPS / media player / itouch replacment and im having issues with the app marketplace...
Every time i try to set up the account using wifi it says could not establish a reliable data connection.
how can i get past this? is there some way i can trick the phone into thinking its running on a data network when its really going through wifi?
Also, every time i turn on the phone its asking me to unlock / set up the phone. i get out of this by using *#83786633 but its a bit annoying, is there anything else i can do? Its a verizon phone and im in canada, so no luck going to V. and asking them to fix it...
would putting a custom firmware on the device be of any use? i have rooted the phone, just cant download any apps through the marketplace. Is there a way to manually install apps through rooting?
My bet would be that you're not fully connected to wifi, to be getting that message. I've been using mine on wifi since I got it, and have set everything up fine. The only time I ran into that problem is when my router went out, it said I was connected but there really was no connection.
As far as the activation screen issue, no there really isn't any way around that. Its there because the phone really should be connected to a network. (And I'm not 100% sure if its going to connect to GPS without being connected to a data network? I've never tried.)
Well if I use airplane mode it turns my gps receiver off however if I use the code above it lets me use gps and wifi no problem. Hell I'm on wifi now on the phone but it won't connect the phone to my google account tho if I go to google.com it works fine.
Any ideas?
oops double post, mods plz delete this
The same happened on my Eris. Best bet is to use data to activate. Turn of syncs and then use wifi to sync. It cant be all that much data. Once your active you wont have a problem using the market and stuff over wifi. Thats what I had to do on the eris to use it as a wifi toy when i got my fas.

okay so my phone lost internet connection on me awhile ago and i was like wtf? then i tired to connect to my wifi but it said there was no wifi available, so i restarted my router an modem but still no wifi dected. So i got my labtop and it found+connected to my wifi with no problems, my phone cant even find it. any idea of how to fix this? Im still looking around trying to find a fix. My phone is rooted with fresh rom on it.
Just a thought, are you using WiFi Tether? I was wondering if it maybe didn't set a setting back correctly when you turned it off last. Try rebooting the phone if you haven't already.
ive rebooted it 2 times but it still detects no wifi, also i coulden't get a evdo signal or whatever that is today when i went out to see if my phone worked if that means anything. o and i just now got it to connect to my wifi by manually setting it up but idk if im gonna be able to see my towns local wifi wich i can connect to whenever im close by or my schools. Do you think i should do a restore on the phone or anything like that?
okay, i found a fix for this for me anyways. If this helps anyone go to your wifi settings and look at the networks you have connected to before, delete all of them. Then your phone should start scanning if you still have wifi turned on and there ya go wifi now works. I have no idea if this bug has anything to do with fresh rom.

Doubt it has anything to do with the Rom, just because we don't have Kernel code to modify or mess with that kind of stuff. May just be a bug for the phone in general. I will test it out tommorow when I have a couple of different signals around me.
i emailed Appalachian wireless and asked them for the evdo settings, but the custom support is probably pretty slow since there not a major company, when i find anything out i'll be sure to post it here. but since i don't get signal or have a data plan it dosen't bother me but i was wantin to get the 30mb addon for $10 so i could check my emails and use my instant messengers.
Hey all,
Done some searching but cant find a clear and striaght forward answer.
Bascially, on my old HTC Dream (Android) wifi would always be searching for a wifi to connect to (and if it found a network, it would tell me). if it was a network it had acess to, then it would automatically connect.
Otherwise, it would just use my contract internet.
So I was wondering, on the HD2, you always have to manually turn wifi on. Then say I leave the house, manually turn it off for it to connect to the contract internet.
Pretty small thing - but it gets annoying after a while.
Is there a way (reg edit or app) to make wifi do the same as the android did?
Thanks!
Bump.
I am interested in this too. I am trying to assemble a Mortscript to do it.
would be so helpfull.
I have my home network, Uni network and girlfriends that I can connect to. Now having to manually connect each time, and then disconnect from wifi when I leave is pretty annoying

This must be a rom issue. What ROM are you using?
My HD2 Wifi will connect automatically to networks I have connected it to before, it will notifiy me of available wifi, it will use cell data when wifi is not connected. Works to me the same as how you described your HTC Dream.
Just the stock one that comes with the phone.
to make my point slightly clearer...
I am at home with my Wifi turned on and connected.
I leave my house and go outside of the wifi range.
My phone still has the wifi icon at the top, but it wont be connected.
Therefore I have to turn wifi off to let it connect to my contract internet.
Maybe Wefi will solve that problem?
On Symbian worked very well.

I shall look into this, cant belive others dont get annoyed at it tbh
I'd like a solution to this too. I have found it annoying since settings my HD2. I haven't had any success with the solutions suggested in the forum to date.
actually guys.. there is another thing.. how about a cab that would force HD2 to open WIFI automtically to update weather/facebook..etc... whenever the any apps needs updating, then shutting the WIFI automatically off instead of trying to connect to 3g. you guys think its possible?
Mine always lets me know when I can connect to wifi.
Guys theirs does too. You dont get what they want.
When wifi is turned on it will search and connect only to wifi. It will not connect to wireless network of provider. So they want a program that would turn wifi off (which would let HD2 to connect to EDGE and 3G) if there was no place to connect to. And it would turn wifi connection back on (dissable 3G and EDGE) when there would be a wifi network to connect into. You get it now? It would neeed quite sophisticated program to switch betwen those two modes.
I dont use Providers network (3G, EDGE) but would like program that would check for avaible WIFI networks that I have access to and Connect to them to get updates (it would check for example every 10min) and connect to it only to get updates and SYNCH. then disconect and wait cca 4hours to start looking for wifis in 10min intervals. Would be nice =)

Then it must depend on the ROM version, but for me it works exactly how he wants, and always has. I never turn Wifi off. If I'm at home within my wifi range and load a webpage, it loads it through wifi. If I walk away, wifi connection gets lost, and I press a link, it will load it with the data connection straight away. If I walk back home or to another place where a known wifi is present, wifi reconnects by itself.
Basically two things going on here. I know the phone can use WiFi just fine (works for data without having a SIM card in the phone), but when trying to use the marketplace, apparently it requires there to be a cellular data connection. Is this a bug or a feature?
Also on a similar note, I've purchased a couple games that are too large to download over the cellular network, and the phone tells me to either connect the phone to WiFi, or connect it to my computer to download the app. When I connect to WiFi, go into the market to start the download, it still tells me I need to connect to WiFi. Plugging it into my computer doesn't really do much other than open Zune, and I can't find a way to redownload purchased apps, it just says I've already bought the app.
Anybody else have similar issues or have any suggestions on how to get around this?
Remove from download and get it again

I had that issue. Once you have bought the app/game, you don't have to pay for it again. Taking this into consideration, you can safely cancel or remove the app from the download list, search for it and hit buy. It will notify you that you have already bought the app, and if you wish to install it again. Agree to do so and it should download fine (over wifi) without any hiccups.
I have installed a couple of apps over zune but it's just way too complicated, really leaving it to chance. Sometimes it'll install, but most times it won't.
Hope this helps.
Hey,
I just picked up a quantum myself and I'm having this exact same problem, I can't download apps through wifi. Mine is not unlocked yet so I haven't had the chance to test it with 3G.
Have you found a fix for it yet?
I've been downloading apps using cellular data...?
However not huge games, just normal apps. Although I tried to download one game last night and it said please connect to wifi, but that's been the only one.
So after using the marketplace app with my cellular data it seems as though I can download apps and games in the marketplace with wifi.
Weird it seems to work normally now.
Maybe there is some sort of authentication step or something that happens once you access the market with your cellular data.
as far as the wifi problems. Its windows... inherently, its still glitchy. Turn it off n right back on n it works for me doing that.
Also as far as apps that say you already have em? Uninstall it, then it will let you do it. delete it and uninstall it. Or worst case, if you REALLY want it, sync, format n resync.
Hi guys.
I have some strange (i think anyway) WIFI behaviour that drives my crazy, im looking for some help resolving it.
My WIFI seems to go into hibernation/sleep even though i explictly set if to never off in the WIFI settings. I notice this problem because my exchange sync fails constantly (only on WIFI, on 3G everthing is perfect). I notice this problem occours when the phone hasnt been used in a while.
After its been in hibernation mode it very slow to get connection again. I open a browser and need to press "refresh" numerous times (about 15/30 sec. i think before this WIFI i "back").
Any views on this problem? hardware related? software related?
My device is running custom ROM, custom Radio, Rooted ect.
Thanks in advanced.
Happens on stock Rom too actually. Happens to the x10 mini and mini pro too actually. Software issue?

**** phone happens to me when I'm in my bed room lose connection all the time and when you want it to connect agian you have to go into settings and WiFi and then it starts looking for it in steed of re-connecting Its self
Seem crazy if this is normal behaviour..
It makes the push email notification useless when im on WIFI. I need to manually sync to test for new emails (and even the sync fails, until the WIFI connection is restored..), need to wait 30 sec to go online, check facebook, twitter etc.
Can anyone else confirm/unconfirm this is normal WIFI behaviour?
Hah, mine doesnt find any wifi hotspot not the mine nor the one of my neighbors
while my HD2 connects easily to all of them, also having bluetooth problems anyone can confirm the buetooth and wifi of the phone are bundled?
calling htc tomorrow
I also have a problem: when I enable the n-setting on my router while I am having a WPA2 encryption and the SSID broadcast is disabled, my DHD doesn't find the access point. When I disable the n-setting, my DHD does find the access point

So I'm having trouble with getting wifi how I want it on my phone. At work we have a unsecured WAP with a web based authentication page. Trouble if you ever use it, it remembers the WAP and wants to login, but unless you you goto the web page, you have no internet. This is particularly a problem when wifi sleeps and looses connection.
The big issue with this is that my phone assumes it has internet when it doesn't. It doesn't fall back to 3g on failure to connect. That means I will not get texts for hours, facebook won't update, etc, etc.
Is there a way to force the phone to fall back to 3g when it fails to connect via wifi? Alternately is there an app that will parse a wifi login page and auto login for me? I'm running clean GB right now.

If wifi was active it should stay active there is an option to keep wifi on in the settings that way it wont go turn off/ go to sleep while its connected. Change the wifi sleep policy this will keep it from "disconnecting".
Settings>wireless & networks> wifi settings> press the menu button advanced> wifi sleep policy> Never

That's not the big problem though. If I lose connection (easy enough with out concrete walls and walking around) or simply don't login in first thing in the morning I still have the issue.
I either need a fallback to 3g or a way to auto login.

well i can tell you what i use Juice Defender and When WiFi is once it goes off my data kicks in so yeah that's my fallback to 3G so you could give that ago if you want.
IMO
Juice Defender= Battery Drainer and waste of money when i can do what it does manually.
To the OP:
the phone should automatically go back to 3g when wifi disconnects i just tested this with my router i had it connected then pull the plug and it went to 3g.

ive done some tests without JD also helps in other areas BTW, and to let you know i put JD on Extreme and let no apps get data unless i manually toggle data and i can tell that my battery lasts much longer by at least by a few hours but still helps rather than my data always being funny randomly connecting and disconnecting to 3G or even if it was off JD does help.

It does when it disconnects, however since the wifi point is open it auto connects every time it picks it up again. Aside from manually forgetting the wifi point all the time, there doesn't appear to be a way to stop this. Connecting remembers it. Its not that I can't get around this manually, but its really annoying.
You could probably do something with a tasker profile. I don't know how to do it but they have a bunch of examples on their site that may help.

I see your problem. You may be able to do this using scripting. The closest thing I have ever done like this is write a script that logged into my cable modem admin page automatically and grabbed the signal strength to log it. I used PHP (command line interpreter) but I would think any language should be capable of submitting data via a post request. Mine was triggered by cron. You would need to trigger on a successful wifi connection, check the ssid, and go from there. I dont know enough details about how that part is done to be helpful, but I know there are some apps that do detect active wifi connections (samba comes to mind) so it must be possible.

Good suggestions so far, u could also try spare parts wifi sleep policy settings..
It might also be something where the connection on the wifi network's (not your phone's) end times out, in which case I'm not sure what to tell u.
