[Q] USB Host - HD2 Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and Genera

Hi all,
Are there any hd2 leo android builds which support usb host/usb flash memory? I've tried Froyostone and mdeejay froyohd without luck (using a Y-cable, flash usb stick and external power).
I think with android being on the SD card having a 2nd external memory would be really useful (I keep changing movies and music on the card and it's a real pain to take the microsd card out and reboot...). I think someone developed a driver for the nexus one but it never really got beyond that.
Cheers,
M

maybe possible but it need external power source (useless for sometime)
Some devs have work for the Desire http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=702742

Might I suggest a larger microsd card? Or SMB share to your videos on your pc? Or just stream the movies from the internet?

Hooking up a USB Hardisk to the HTC Universal

Hi People!
Is it Yes or Not possible to hook up a USB hardisk to the HTC Universal (providing the hard disk is powered externaly) to exchange file between the Universla and the Hardisk?
No
I'm sure some day there'll be a way, but dont hold your breath...
So does it have USB host? I thought the previous conclusion was that it didn't come enabled after all?
Why do you want to hook up a drive anyhow? What's wrong with a UNC connection over WiFi?
Why not use a 4GB SD card?
Hi
i use my Toshiba e800 as storage transfer solution of my pictures.
I connect an 80GB usb hardrive to the toshiba and insert my 2gb lexar memories on the CF slot for backup photos on hollidays ....
The issue is ? thoes the universal have usb host function ????

No they don't.
We all hope it's just a matter of OS/Drivers and maybe a day in the future an update will give Universal usb host capability.
Roberto
Forget it. Only the CPU supports the USB Host feature. HTC chose not to include the neccessary remaining hardware on the device's mainboard, hence something a driver can never cure.
What about an SDIO USB host? Possible? Do they exist already?
Buy a laptop if you need that much space. This isn't a PC, it is a phone with PDA functionality. Show me any other PDA you can do this to? You can't.

That's what I was alluding to earlier, shouldn't be too long before they're available, I read about them on some website a couple of months ago but I can't find the flippin' link now.
Can't honestly say I'd use that much memory though, 2Gb is enough for me for the forseeable future.
when comparing mb / £ a HDD is the only real solution so far,
especially if you want vga res videos running. SD cards are good but only having 1-4 movies on a 2gb card becomes a pain.
i use a 2.5" hdd in a caddy hardly bigger than the drive, its only a 10gb drive atm as it is all that was avaliable "freely" , but it is WAY WAY WAY handier than a handful of SD's to ship data around
hdd usb conectivity would only be an interim step in the right direction, when 40gb+ SD type cards are mainstream and can be housed in the universal without ever needing to swap to your "videos" sd or your "music" sd or your "data" sd, then we are approaching the ideal situation.
but we wont get there until the basics are met first.

Succky file tranafer

I love my wing but one of the several suckky things about it is the file transfer, if i am transfering a files that is anything bigger han like 5o mb it takes mad long to tranfser from my pc to my phone. And files like movies are impossible to transfer. I was trying to transfer a movie to my phone and even after waiting about 5 hrs. it did not finish the transfer. That basically means that i can't use my phone as video player. That suck, or is there a way that i could speed up the ttransfer speeds, tips tricks hacks, anything is fine. Except i don't want ot go too far with the hacks. Thanks people
Why dont you just pop-in the microSD into its SD adapter and put it into the cardreader? I'm using a sandisk branded microSD and it transfer 1.7GB in <5mins!
For smaller data transfers(<40mb),I use activesync.
I am aware of the solution that you gave me, but the problem is that my computer does not recognize the micro SD card in the SD adopter, which by the way is Sandisk branded and the two came together. Is there a way i can make that work??

I think he meant the phone's built in connection.
^exactly what I meant. A $15 1GB flash drive has USB 2.0, but this $400 phone can't...
yay, my computer recognizes my card, but still no good.
Ok so finally after waiting an hour for my computer to recognize my Micro sd card which was in an sd adopter, it finally did it. But then when i tried to open it it took another 35 minutes to respond. And then it said that the card is'nt formatted and asked me if i wanted to format it. i know that if i format it for my computer all it's previous data will disaper, so what should i do.
There is a possibility that the cardreader doesn´t support the size of your memorycard. For examplae my laptop is equipped with a bulit-in cardreader that supports SD&Memorystick BUT only up to 1GB. Anything above that (for example my 2GB card from my digicam) and I get the same results as you do. Sometimes i isn´t recognized and sometimes it is but extremely slow but I can never write anything to it.
So is there anything i can do about that?

[Q] plug Transformer into PC via USB - what do you see?

Hi,
This is kind of a basic question, but since I don't have a Transformer, I have no way to testing it. I've tested it on a Samsung before.
What do you see on the typical Windows XP machine when you plug your Transformer into it? Does it show up as a USB storage device? Can you move stuff directly from PC to Transformer?
I tried a Samsung Tab 10.1. I couldn't move anything into the Samsung, and it has no micro-SD card to use as alternate.
I'm using win 7 but it does what you describe when you plug it in...it's seen as a drive. (the MicroSD card that is.)
If you're running Windows XP with Media Player 11 installed (the easiest way to make it work in my experience), the Transformer shows up as a portable device in My Computer. You can move files to and from the device, but it's not assigned a drive letter (I think the SD card is if you have one). It's also not recognized as USB Mass Storage - Honeycomb doesn't connect that way.
The drawback is if you want to use utilities or apps that reference a drive letter (like iTunes Agent), it won't work. Also, because it's not USB Mass Storage, the tablet won't be recognized by simpler devices like the PS3 - therefore you cannot share data. I move data between my Galaxy S Captivate (2.2) and my PS3 all the time via USB cable, but I can't do it with my Transformer - though I've yet to try with an SD card installed.

Are you sure? Mine doesn't show as usb drive but as a mobile device. I can access both internal storage and microSD but with really bad transfer speed. How do you access the microSD as a drive?

Oh...maybe it does...I assumed that since it showed up as storage that it was a drive...I assumed that it was the same thing.
Thanks for the quick responses.
Interesting that both Samsung Tab and Transformer are running basically the same OS, but for some reason the Samsung Tab 10.1 won't let me put files in it via USB. It doesn't have a micro-SD slot, so it's a big problem.
Why, wonder why the big difference between the two if they're the same Android 3.1.

Sometimes, microSD is better than SD

I've seen many people complain that they wish the Iconia had a full-size SD slot and not a microSD one. Today, I realized that microSD can be a big advantage.
My wife is on a school trip this weekend, currently on a bus with 60 high-schoolers. She just called because she realized that she'd left behind some important instructions that she's supposed to read to the kids on the bus. I can e-mail them to her, but the problem is that the tablet (my Acer Iconia) doesn't have a WiFi connection on the bus and lacks 3G so she can't receive the e-mail there. The instructions would be too small to easily read from her phone. Fortunately, her phone is an Android one with a microSD card. So, I've e-mailed her the instructions - she can save them on the microSD card, swap the card into the tablet, copy the file to the tablet's memory, and then return the cards. This will put the document on the tablet, where she can easily read it.
This made me realize that a similar solution would be useful with photos. I can take the photos on my camera, copy them to the tablet and convert the RAW images to 800x600 JPGs. Next, I can put the JPGs on a microSD card in the tablet's card slot and then put that card into an Android phone to e-mail them as desired. True, having 3G on the tablet, or setting up tethering with the phone, would be better options, but neither are available to me at the present. So, this will be a great solution - when I replace my iPhone with an Android (I hope to have a Samsung Galaxy SII LTE/Skyrocket soon).
Thanks for that post. It just shows how far we have come with technology over the years and how tablets are becoming part of every day life.
Just be careful putting the SD card in and out of devices. I think the locking tab on most micro SD cards is much too small and will wear off. This will make the card not hold in.Safari as the Iconia its tough to get micro card locked in .for me anyway.I don't think micro slots should be mechanically spring loaded to small to work correctly.
You can do Bluetooth file sharing between tablet and iteration non android devices.just pare them. I think you have to send the file from the phone.
From my touch pro2 i send files to the A500 via bluetooth. Im sure you can do the same with a android phone. I wouldnt go swapping cards from device to device.
Why didn't she just connect her Android phone to the USB port of your iconia via the cable?

I've found that bluetooth usually works pretty well for transferring small files. It seems to be too slow to transfer larger files quickly, however. With files over 20mb in size I try to use a cable, or even a thumb drive with the acer.

Do the MicroSD cards have locking tabs? The ones I have dont.... thought it was only on the full size.
But aside from that... the OP had the exact same thought as me when I got my tab. Although i really wanted a full size SD slot for the extra capacity and to swap with my camera, I ended up using a Mini/Full SD adapter to use the Minis in my camera.
I bought this from my local Kmart and use the USB adapter in my A500 to read MicroSD from my phone or another tablet. Beats the crap out of actually trying to fiddle the one out from my tablet, and it has the bonus of being able to plug into my PC and my car stereo's USB port if I want to listen to music from it.

Works really well and its a tiny little thing, I can leave it plugged into my tablets USB port all the time and it doesn't get in the way too much at all.

Not write protect locking. Ian refering to the tiny bump on the side of the card that holds it into the slot. This is not used on many phones. But the Iconia SD card locked in by this tab.I have a SD card I used alot between two phones with music on it.this card will not stay in position on my tablet that lock (little bump on card) is worn off

Even with USB storage turned on it won't recognize it! My computer can see both drives on my phone just fine but the tablet gets nothing :/
I intentionally bought a micro SD card + SD adapter for my digital camera so I can easily swap the card into my tablet to transfer photos over. Yes, a USB adapter would have done the job with a regular SD but this is one less thing to carry around. Now I can swap Micro SDs between my tablet, camera and phone. It feels good to be connected

[Q] Setting up OTG

Hello there, I'm currently looking for a usb OTG cable, will get to test one later this evening.
I have a question: What do i need to do to set up the storage on the tablet side? Do i need to get an app that configures the new storage or is it just plug & play. I'm asking because I will try to test the cable to see if it works. Can I just use Solid Explorer to access the external storage after i plug in the usb cable with the attatched card reader and 16gb microsd hc class 6 card?
My nexus7 3g is rooted, currently on Jr4 Rom.
Oh and another thing.. is the nexus7 limited in terms of microsd size and speed class ?
Thx allot.

Get StickMount from the market - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.chainfire.stickmount&feature=search_result
Plug and Play
Use a file manager to find it
Stickmount is the way to go, but you must be rooted. The Nexus Media Importer app lets you access external storage as read-only. You have to pay, but don't need to be rooted. I'm using a 32Gb microsd class 10 and it works great as read/write and streaming with Stickmount.
64GB Sandisk microsdxc the N7 will read if microsd card formatted in NTFS using stickmount. Mine works fine.

I think I will manage to use it without stickmount.
I'm running a kernel that sais it will automount hotplug usb support. Does this mean that it will automount it just like stickmount pro does?
didn't actually get to test that OTG cable yet, maybe tonight.
Also, what do you think of the Rescan Media app? it's supposed to start the Media Scanner service on android and inform mx player and winamp about the .avi and .mp3 files on your sdcard or flashdrive.

Yeah stickmount pro is the way to go, my 500GB portable Samsung HDD works fine but wouldn't on my Galaxy S3 until I flash Siyah kernel again, I use Trinity kernel on my Nexus 7 and no problems
OTG cable - External HDD or whatever you use - stickmount pro and away you go.

I'm using "nexus media importer" on my unrooted device. It isn't a free app but if you just want to try it before buying, you can try the dev's free app "gallery connect preview". Make sure your usb memory stick has pictures on it . Open the app before connecting the usb stick. I had to try a few times till the app recognized my cardreader and sd cards. Without root i can't change files on the external memory, but at least i can watch movies and open files from it.
I don't know if the sd cards are in FAT or NFTS. I just take it out of my dslr camera and plug it in the cardreader connected to my OTG cable.
