2 Gmail Problems - G2 and Desire Z General

I have searched the forums and scanned the results and can't seem to find any posts on this, so I'm wondering if I'm the only one with these two issues with gmail:
1) Choppy images - when I'm looking at my emails, when I scroll in any direction, the images take a noticeable fraction of a second to 're-focus' (for lack of a better word). They're not smooth. When I use the browser (for instance), I don't have this issue, so it's obviously Gmail-specific.
2) Auto-advance: older conversation - I love this feature, but wish it would actually work. I find that when I read my first email and archive/delete it, I move on to *AN* older one, but often Gmail skips an email or two in between. So I end up going back to the inbox and going through the process again, just to address all my new mail.
I can't imagine I'm the only one with these issues, but confirmation would be great. Also, I don't see any settings I could adjust to fix these, but if you have a suggestion, fire away. Both issues are minor, but they grate on the mind...

you can either wait for the update that's apparently going around slowly or use the "Wipe data" in the Recovery of the phone to reset your G2 back to the way it was when you bought it (erasing you apps data not your SD) then re-setup the phone. I don't know for sure if ANY of these options will work but i think they're the best you can do right now seeing as I've never heard of anyone having this problem, me included.

Thanks for trying to help - I'm definitely more concerned if this is just happening to my phone. I'll try a wipe of the data in the gmail app itself and if that doesn't work will just wait for the update and hope that fixes things. I really don't want to wipe the whole thing! Thanks again.

Serious freezing issues

I have reflashed the phone about three times with the stock rom and now have moved to custom ones which seem to be working a little better, but I am honestly getting annoyed with how much this phone freezes while in the text window. I have to do a battery pull every time because none of the hard buttons respond either. I have seen many posts and was wondering if anyone has found a fix to this. I might, however, have a bad phone. I did not but it from T-mobile, so if I brought it in to them would they even be able to replace it or how do I go about doing that?

The SMS freezing issue is widespread in this phone, I honestly don't think you have a bad piece of hardware.
One of the solutions that seems to work most frequently is to keep the number of text messages retained in your phone down to an absolute minimum (like 50 or less) at all times. Clearing them out regularly (and from the deleted folder as well) seems to have eliminated the issue for a bunch of people. If it's critical for you to retain messages longer than that would allow, I'd suggest just backing your messages up with myphone or something similar that allows you to access them off the phone.
I know that's not an ideal solution, but it seems to work. That's the strategy I use all the time, and I've never once had the sms lagging or lockup issues that so many others report.
I've been deleting all my texts as soon as they get over 20 just to minimalize the problem, everything else will start lagging as well if I let this happen. Thanks though. I hope they get a fix for this because I love this phone.
I was haVing the same issues but not as bad as you...you can also try changing the messages too standard not threaded. you can do that by selecting all messages then menu then options...also try running titanium. go to settings/all settings then select windows default I trash mine like that for a while. but what seems to have fixed my problems was just un installing cookies home tab...I mentioned to sirphunkee that in a few days I would install cookies again to see if my problems came back.
I think this MIGHT help you id the problem.
See if removing the memory card helps.
My first unit seemed as bad as yours, if not worse.
Whenever I removed the memory card, it would run SUPER smooth, so I thought to myself, maybe a higher class sdhc would do the trick?
Nope.
There is just something defective about all the TMOUS HD2s...they just fail imho.

HD mini ROM upgrade (for South East Asia)

HTC issued an upgrade today. I think this is what you guys have been waiting for. Check it out. I'm downloading it now.
ROM Upgrade for HTC HD mini
Release Date: 2010-07-08
ROM Version:1.36.707.3
Thank you very much , what the difference from old version?
thanxxx...
thanx for notifying...
Officially, these are the improvements:
1. The trimmer bar will slide smoothly while trimming the mp3.
2. Enhance the system performance and stability.
3. Improves the ringtone sound quality.
For me, only #2 and #3 are important.
I've just finished flashing the phone. Have to wait for start up and bring all my personal setup and data back to the phone.
Then i'll give it a test run to check for any noticeable improvements.
From the outset, HD mini seems to run smoothly already before the upgrade. Although i have some basic complaints about the new os and/or htc custom software.
1. Calendar from the Manila tabs is seriously crippled. When you slide to the Calendar tab, or jump to it from the Home link, it takes half a minute before the week's schedule comes up. Unlike the old WinMo 6.1 calendar or old 3rd party calendars that jumps right up without any delays. Secondly, there's no way to make duplicates of schedules. For example, i have a "corporate meeting" scheduled for today. After the day is done, another one was set for the following week. Normally, i'd just copy from today, and then paste into 7-days after. But that's impossible to do in Manila Calendar. I'd have to resort back to the WinMo Calendar, which thankfully is still lay hidden in the sub-menus, to do this very basic task. Third, it's fixed to show 7-days schedules only. Can't add more days to it. I hope HTC will take a look at this serious draw back for the otherwise wonderful phone. (This disability will frustrate business folks.)
2. Text Messaging is eye-candy. Which is good. Except, there's a huge trade off. First, the Text tab shows only last 25 messages, and not intuitive at all. It's shown in the ancient per message style. No threading. Although, you can click All Messages to go into the threaded format. Which brings us to the second biggest problem. It's extremely slow. You click on a person, and the messages will build up slowly, taking several seconds to come up one by one, depending on the volume of the conversation with that person. Third, and the worst worst part??? The old trusty speedy WinMo's own versatile text messaging app was killed off. So you're left with no alternative.
3. Contacts/People app is also seriously crippled. This used to be WinMo's ugly but super versatile function. The very attraction that draws people to WinMo. New Contacts app is either broken or buggy. You can't use cut/copy/paste functions in most of the fields, except the very basic ones. As an example, you can do the cut/copy/paste with Mobile Number, but not the rest of it, ie. Car Number, Radio Number, Home Number, etc. So it's very choosy. Of course, if you dig deeper, you're thrown back to WinMo's own Contacts app. Saved the day? No way. It's the opposite. The new weird looking WinMo Contacts do not allow any cut/copy/paste at all, except for the Notes section. I wonder why do they have to axe this very useful core functionality. But the nightmare doesn't end there. If you change a tiny thing in a particular Contact field, saving it will take ages. Basically freezing up the phone for maybe a minute or so. Most people would have probably pried open the back cover and took out the battery. (Because mini doesn't have reset button.) It really looks like the whole phone has crashed. Until, if you're patient enough to wait, and realize it's just super slow to save an editted Contact.
Apart from these 3 nuisances. The rest of the phone works wonderfully.
So, for now, i can only resort to Outlook editting on my netbook, whenever i need to work on the contacts and schedules. Then sync.
But this means, i can't do these basic stuffs real time, as needed, whenever needed. I'll have to remember all the changes of contacts and schedules for the day. And then do my homework when i get home. It doesn't happen everyday. But still a big drawback. Information tends to get lost along the way.
New ROM brings more stability to text messaging. Still super slow, but error free now. Possibly no more bugs, or eliminated to the minimum.
I got around 2000 text messages and more than 1600 contacts in my phone. Probably the reason making the Messaging and Contacts app super slow. (In HD mini, all of them are linked. Updating something in a contact will be updated all across the whole ecosystem.)
But i had more than 20,000 messages and same number of contacts in my old trusty Asus P750 WinMo 6.1 phone. And there was no slow down in either Messaging or Contacts apps. Not even editting and filling up tons of data in the notes field of a contact can put a dent to it. The Calendar app was also fast. Both WinMo's own and third party apps.
I'm back again for more observations on the new ROM update.
Thankfully, HTC brought back the "Snooze to X mins/hours/days" options whenever a schedule reminder pops up. Really wonderful. I love this.
Thank you HTC, for solving one of my major gripes on HD mini.
I hope HTC can take a look at my other gripes (see above, plus a slight problem with excel), and incorporate solutions for the next update.
Another thank you note for HTC is that, my first unit, which seem to hang a lot, was quickly replaced with a brand new unit. Not much questions asked. Now, that's quality product coupled with quality service. Very good. No wonder HTC is rising so quickly.
just updated it yesterday from the HongKong HTC website(ROM Version:1.36.721.3), i guess it's the same as the one mentioned in this post.
Infact i haven't noticed any special change or improvement after upgrading my hd mini, the sliding between different different tabs seems to be smoother, but still it'll be lagged when moving from the home screen to 9-tabs screen.
Like bart3385 said, the "Snooze to X mins/hours/days" options makes the schedule more friendly and logical(so that i won't miss up any of the coming event).
But there're still some things need to be fixed.
1.G-sensor seems to be too much sensitive= =(not that sensitive in the previous rom. Not a big problem if u aren't interested in teeter)
2.Chinese font is still terrible(when compare to the Hong Kong CHT rom), not easy to read as there's no antialiasing when the chinese character is small.(still not a problem for those who dun read/type chinese)
3.Scanty ram!!!Need to keep killing tasks.
To prepare for the upgrade, I understand that the personal data should be backed up first. That itself isn't an issue for my friend cos her data is sync'd to outlook exchange, and SMSes can be backed up via microsoft myphone.
What about programs eg bsbtweak and other apps that I installed on her phone.. Do these need to be reinstalled? If that's the case I need to bring the various cab files along as well, when I begin the labourious task of upgrading the ROM!
What she really needs is a way to desensitise the touchscreen. She finds it too sensitive

Any Asian serial number can download the ROM upgrade. HTC is just making sure you don't use this on European units, which the ROM is not intended for. In other words, avoiding mismatch.
Although i have no idea what will happen if you install an Asian ROM in a European unit. Aside from losing all the European languages. Will it work?
I have error "incorrect vender" when I install the Asian ROM in my European unit. Any solution?

I guess that answers my question. Apparently, the ROM has to match the country of the device it is intended for.
Have you tried downloading a European latest ROM from HTC site, and flashing it to your unit?

Everything will be lost when you upgrade ROM. Including apps, configurations, data, messages, etc.
You'll have to reinstall all the apps all over again.
You can use Jeyo Mobile Companion to back up your SMS instead of MyPhone. Backup to the XML format, so that you can restore all of them back to your phone. You can also backup and restore your call logs.
I always feel safer to backup things to my pc, instead of the internet.

[Q] News stopped updating

On Nov 17 my news widget abruptly stopped updating. Manual, Auto, existing sources, new ones, NOTHING makes any difference at all. I've tried disabling AdFree, mucking about with all the settings there are, which were all correct when I started, and various other things none of which made any difference at all.
From searching the forums it sounds like if I restore factory defaults the News app may start working again, until the next time it stops of course.
I'm not certain what "restore factory defaults" means wrt the OTA update but I'm not sure I care either. I have a LOT of work into this and getting the RSS reader to work for an indeterminate period is not worth doing it all again.
I did see reference to AnyRSS, so maybe that's an option. But before I abandon the news app/widget entirely I thought I'd put a post of the forums for my actual device.
One option that I haven't tried but is interesting is in Froyo Task Killer I can delete all the app's data. This conceivably could wipe out whatever bad data is preventing it from syncing. It could also make a damn mess deleting files that would insure a Sense crash until a factory refresh.
So, simple question, does anyone know the cause of this apparently rather pervasive problem? Is there any way to fix it other than "reinstall the OS". Shocking how many things that will "fix". But while it often, perhaps even usually, works it is NEVER a reasonable alternative. Thank you micro$oft for lowering the expectations of an entire industry.
Terry
winMo free and loving it
When mine stopped updating on the 24th that was the last straw for me and I ditched Sense and began using LauncherPro Plus. It is much more customizable and super stable. You lose the news widget and the clock widget, but those can be replaced easily. Clock replaced with Fancy Widget Pro and the news I have given up on for now until I find a suitable replacement. I just haven't had the time to find one yet. Whatever you do DO NOT erase the data on the news program/widget. I did and I lost all the feed options. I had to nandroid restore to get them back. I would just find an alternative and give up on the Sense version. I know this isn't a great answer, but I'm in the same boat.

UK Retail Gingerbread Review

I hope Motorola reads this thread so they can start working on the next update. I reserve the next post for adding future updates by me or other members.
Fingerprint Scanner
Pros
It works pretty good to the point I have decided to actually use it again. In Froyo you had to unlock the screen before using the scanner but in Gingerbread the scanner automatically unlocks the screen too which is very nice and practical.
Only if Motorola made it to work on Froyo then they didn't need to remove this feature in Atrix 2 because of the bad feedback.
Cons
When the screen is unlocked the left icon on the bottom dock gets highlighted with a rectangular border around it.
Email
Pros
I have never managed to get hotmail to sent emails on Froyo. Everything started to work on Gingerbread with very easy way to setup hotmail accounts -- just enter the email and password and the email client does the rest. I'm very pleased to have one account per email now instead of two in Froyo.
The emails in Outbox that requires to be resend due to a connection failure for instance has a new feature that let the user to know what the app is doing. A green arrow on the left side of the email appears while being send. Also a long press on an email would pop-up a menu with various options including Resend option.
Cons
Disabling the suggestions does not stop the email client to show suggestions. I always found Motorola does this where disabling something does not work until the next update. I wonder why? Are you collecting data on us Motorola?
I preferred the ability to add email(s) at composition time from contacts in Froyo. If I am sending an email to someone that don't remember any part of the email Motorola has made it very difficult by using the suggestions feature. Now Motorola force me to think contacts before think about the email itself. How about sending to multiple recipients? Not a good implementation Motorola. Please return the old style please.
Launcher & Menus
Pros
I like the new Dock far better than the old one that I was even embarrassed to show my old screen to anyone. The simplicity of it works for me very well and if I needed something more fancy I know where to find one.
Haptic feedback now works correctly when is disabled. I often disable this feature to save battery (every mV counts).
Cons
Putting Battery Manager and Data Manager under the same menu item didn't appear the best of options.
Cellular Radio
Pros
I really can't comment about the signal quality as I think T-Mobile have major network issues in central London, UK. However, I'm yet to notice battery overheating due to signal problems.
Cons
Noticed this a couple of times where setting the Network to 2G only didn't change the cellular icon on status bar.
Wifi
Pros
The slow download with Market app is solved.
The Wifi appears to play much better coming back from sleep.
Battery
Pros
The battery life noticeably last longer than before. I would estimate additional 2 to 3 hours over the same usage pattern. I'm very pleased about this improvement. Still carry three spare batteries though.
Cons
Even though the new battery driver manages the faulty batteries Motorola produced and sold, hundred of thousands of them, better but the problem is still there. The improvement can be found when the phone is restarted. The new driver reads the correct charge level but still fails to maintain the charge level correctly during the use.
Dialpad
Pros
Just did a quick test for this review and very pleased to report the previous problem with punching numbers during a call is sorted now.
I don't mind the new look either.
Contacts
Cons
I don't like the integrated contacts the way has been implemented. The old one was much better.
I don't like the bold fonts with contact names. Any chance an option is added to the settings to turn it off please?
Those also don't like the new contacts have you managed to find alternatives?
Camera
Pros
I have previously mentioned about the noise level the camera app adds to the taken pictures in comparison to other camera applications. It seems the problem is gone.
Cons
The new camera driver seems too sensitive to the lights now. Cameras are not the subject I'm good at maybe someone else with better understanding of cameras can contribute to this thread please.
Performance
I don't feel any noticeable difference between the two in home launcher term. I freeze a lot of applications that is why.
Opera Mobile on Gingerbread is incredible. With strong 3G signal I cannot tell if I'm on Wifi or 3G really.
Apps opens up much quicker, very noticeable with heavy duty apps like camera, navigation, and media players. First time ran quadrant benchmark I scored 2501.
I'm really happy with the performance of my Atrix for the remaining of my contract, over a year to go.
Task Manager (OS feature)
Pros
It looks better than the same offering in Froyo.
Cons
Am I the only one thinks some apps are actually not being shown when view the list but a minute or so later the app shows up in the list?
Market App
Pros
For one very strange reason I was never able to view the second screenshot of the app in the gallery. This problem has been resolved.
Unexplainable Issues
1. Rebooted the phone and the startup process never passed the boot animation. Pulling the battery didn't solve anything but wiping the cache from Android Recovery Mode did.
2. After changing a hotmail email settings all email accounts stopped sending out emails including non-hotmails. Wiping the cache and resetting up the emails solved the problem out. I removed all the accounts before wiped out the cache, maybe that wasn't necessary. Also maybe at that very moment T-Mobile had issues. Took me a while to re-setup everything again.
3. Out of the blue the phone restarted itself. I have frozen many apps so I didn't expect that one. I have noticed one reboot so far. Is there any boot logger app where I can monitor if my phone reboot itself when I'm not using it? I guess a good project for me as soon as I get the time to learn the Android development environment.
Boot time
Cons
The startup of Atrix on Gingerbread is considerably slower than when it was on Froyo.
Also examining the dmesg log using OSMonitor app I noticed constant warnings about the CPU clock speed, all sort of debug messages, and error messages. Is anyone else has noticed them and are these messages something to worry about?
Edit: attached few screenshots for the sharp eyes of kernel developers. Thanks.
Text Messaging App
Pros
The layout improvement are a welcome and always liked what Motorola offered.
Cons
The character counter disappears while typing. It is an important feature to work properly all the time.
Home Launcher #2
Cons
While in Messaging app upon returing to the home screen the shortcuts disappear. Navigating to next or previous home screen and then returing back to the original screen then the shortcuts reappear again. I have experienced this twice so far.
Further testing revealed defrosting blur.res was not the solution. Also the shortcuts disappearance has nothing to do with which app was being active.
I hate to burst your bubble but I doubt Motorola checks here without reason...

Plus: People have made custom ROM's that fix the problems that you listed...

I9100xxlpq (4.0.3) issue list <------

So, lets make a list of issues with this release:
1. Wifi from time to time crashes when enabling it, for example when you try to enable wifi it goes into "limbo state" where you cannot disable or enable it again.
2. Shazam/soundhound cannot identify songs if you play them from integrated music player.
3. The 3rd one is most hardest to explain, basically if application crashes "home" button does not work (in gingerbread it always worked), so you have to wait app to respond or wait about 30 seconds for android message, that application hung.
I'm seriously thining about returning back to gingerbread due to these issues, although battery usage is nice and gps work really impressive, but this release is very buggy
read the stickies - you know...the giant one right at the top of the screen that says
*******DO NOT Start any more New Threads on ICS*******
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1544657
I dont care what it says, its not related to that topic anyway, I'm sure I'm not only one who has issues with this release and I think it would be a great idea to keep all issues in one forum thread instead on many threads in this forum.
I'll add an issue too: it has Touchwiz.
Exchange battery bug drain!
Before stating any issue at all, one should state whether or not they did a full wipe/factory reset, if you didn't, the problem is not the firmware, but the owner of the phone.
Of the three issues stated by the opening poster, I only have one, which is the lengthy wait if an app force closes, the other two are not firmware bugs, they are user bugs.

Do it after installing on stock kernel to be 100% sure
except for the occasional force close, I have zero issues (three so far, twice was gmail and lastly the PGA Tour App)
And I did test both Soundhound and Shazam while playing music, identified songs in less than 10 seconds
first of all, i did a full wipe before and after flashing, have no mods installed, just a bunch of apps.
for me, the biggest problem right now is email with social hub. in gingerbread, when i opened the social hub it was in the state i left it, mostly the email accounts overview, now it always starts on feeds, and when you click messages, it shows all accounts' combined inbox and it seems kinda buggy, because the number of new emails never match. notifications show 3 new emails, the social hub says there is 5 and upon opening, it looks like there is only one, because the combined inbox just does not work properly.
also, i set it to display the next message, once i deleted one, but no, it goes back to the ridiculous overview. and within an email there is no next message and previous message buttons anymore, they are only present in the email app, which, incidentally, looks like the social hub, but has completely different buttons, whereas on gingerbread, it was exactly the same (only that the social hub also has facebook and twitter, which is why i use it, to combine all messages in one place, at least if it works).
another bug i already posted in the release thread (but of course it was lost in between all the noob posts, "halp, mai pohne brokez") is that many menu items are way too long and disappear to the right, see attached screenshot. there are settings with checkboxes, and you can't even read, what you just activated/deactivated.
samsung should either make small blue explanations underneath or let those lines scroll through to reveal the right part.
also, after rooting, i could not restore my titanium backup, so i set it all up manually and even then, google play apps that install to the sd card by default, didn't work.
Solution: flashing back stock kernel. another piece of important information, completely lost in the release thread.
i never bothered before, because with the old bootloader and if you bring your device into bootloader mode using the jig, you never have a yellow triangle. (yes, even if you root your device and NOT use the jig afterwards, no yellow triangle).
the following might be specific to my device and not apply to yours, so it does not count as a bug:
when i bought the phone in june '11, it came with ke2 i believe, and it got incredibly hot while playing 3d games (gameloft etc.). non of the roms that came after that had that problem until la2, which also had incredibly poor battery life.
now, lpq has great battery life and does not really get hot, but once you play, while charging your phone, it gets as hot, as it never has before. yesterday, after 30 minutes of osmos hd, i couldn't continue, as my fingers hurt, touching the display and the phone's backside. on battery, i can play for hours without any temparature change.
(if anyone can confirm this, i'd be glad)
oh and before i forget:
@leftovermagic and the others posting while i write this:
the point of that sticky is to stop noobs from creating a new thread with the same topic, which is "lpq released". this is a bug collection and just like the "my first impressions" thread it is something different from the release message. as stated above, reported bugs get totally lost in that thread with hundreds of people too stupid to flash the rom in the first place.
if this thread were to be kept clean from comments and just be a collection of bug reports, it would be useful, general whining is not.
EDIT: oops, forgot the screenshot.
For me the big problem is that some games black screen after 1 minute playing, especially many gameloft games..
Not compatible with ICS yet?
