Softroot via UniversalAndroot - Wildfire General

Is it possible to softroot the wildfire via the universalandroot insted of the oneclick root. it seems even more simple to me.

No, just use unrevoked lol nothing that hard

its not my device but the device of a gf, and shes a little bit afraid of a real root. a easy softroot like androod (nothing with adb) would be perfect.

You don't need adb to use unrevoked. Only need it for debugging, screenshot etc

hm, but would androot would be possible (the official thread says that softroot should work, like for my legend)?

I'm pretty sure that the universal softroot have just packaged my soft root into their kit, so it should work although, as with others, you'd do better to properly root.

Universal androot works perfectly. Just make sure to use at least v1.6.2 beta and select "soft root". .5 doesn't work very reliably for some reason. BTW, force close when it finishes is part of the process.

temp root with visionary and z4 problem?

for some reason.. whenever I do temp root with visionary or z4... It says its rooting.. then my phone "restarts" does the sprint 4g slaph screen and gets stuck on the big 4G logo...
I ran visionary when I first got the shift(temp root to run titanium backup) but now it's not working. anyone know why?
I tried z4 and visionary+ and it makes my phone run very slow. R ran seepu and saw that the cpu usage at max all the time. My phone got hot.
I want to root for the wifi hotspot but I'm afraid of messing up the perm root and bricking my phone, so temp root would be ideal, but it isn't really working. Am i missing something?
Its pretty hard to brick this phone...
Sent from my PG06100 using XDA App
when i was rooting my shift z4 wouldn't work for me at all. it did the exact same thing you're describing, temp root>reboot>no root. visionary worked like a charm both times i've rooted this (i was having second thoughts on keeping it so i flashed it stock one night when i was drunk). anyways, if you follow the instructions line by line and copy/paste the code to adb shell it's a pretty painless process. you can root, backup wimax keys, and install clockwork recovery in a matter of about 20 minutes. everyone is nervous their first time... but it's really not difficult. the biggest problems i had was getting the usb drivers to install correctly (win7 x64) and getting a good copy of visionary. other than that, it's easy.
what i'm really trying to say is, i would suggest just perm rooting your device... with root and titanium you can delete all the crap you don't like (ie. kindle, amazon, nfl or nascar) and it makes it easier to work with. you can also OC/UV the stock rom for an even sweeter experience.
Yup, Perma-rooted. Got help in the Shift IRC, they are very nice ppl.
I was having difficulty with the ordinary Temproot option of Visionary (it kept rebooting and slowing down instead), so I instead tried Temproot on Boot. It worked great just now--I'm hoping it continues to do so.
Visionary and Z4root
I am unable to find this in the Android market, is it safe to search for the .apk's for both and install?

Perfect! Thanks for the quick reply.
I sometimes have the same problem with both Visionary+ and Z4Root. I also notice, that when it fails to root, the app also disappears.
For me, If I reboot, the app comes back. If I try a second time, it always works.

Solve this puzzle...

Alright... I am having a bit of an issue... looking for interesting solutions.
Have a replacement MT4G with stock 2.3.4. I am trying to downgrade to Froyo so I can root it.
Unfortunately, my usb cable must not be working. It starts charging when I plug it into the PC, but Windows won't recognize it (I have tried different ports, and double checked drivers...). When I had my first Mt4G, if I needed to use ADB, I used a market app that allowed me to connect to ADB using Wifi. It has some limitations, but it is a good substitute if needed.
But those Wireless ADB apps only work with Root (at least the ones I found), and well, obviously that was the goal all along... so I am thinking temporary root... but didn't think there was a temp root...
Question: does anyone know of a way to access ADB wirelessly without root, or know of a way to gain temp root via terminal emulator so I could then connect via the wifi ADB app and be able to complete downgrade/permroot?.... or are there any suggestions for what I could do to get the USB working?.....anything would be appreciated.
I can use the SD card with my laptop.. so downloading/getting files on the phone's SD card is not a problem... just access to ADB is a problem.
PS: Since the USB cable still functions as a charger (if that is actually the problem), I am trying to avoid spend $40 for the replacement.... since I would really only need it once.
Did you try TrueBlue_Drew thread about adb/fastboot set up ?
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA App
If you need to gain root access, there are other methods than the regular ADB .
Refer this post to find way that suits you.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=834225
If you need Wireless ADB, refer to this post.
Thank you both.... question however...
2kwic25: I checked the trueblue thread, and this seems to be a method for rooting which does not require the full sdk. However, it still uses the usb cable to connect to the phone. I am trying to gain temp root either through the emulator alone, or using adb (which is already installed on my pc) via wifi, but without having any su or root permissions as I don't have them and that is what I am trying to achieve ultimately.
febycb I read/scanned the link on rooting.... I went through to the end of it, and it doesn't seem to apply to the gingerbread 2.3.4 stock. This is what is on my phone now. I have a brand new phone, everything is factory locked, no root, s=on, etc.. The one post I found originally which seems to be the route most are using is to gain temproot, then downgrade to Froyo.... THEN attempt rooting to get a real permroot with s=off. So, in order to downgrade, I need to connect via USB, and use adb initially. But my USB does not work, so I am left with trying to connect via wifi. However, the thread on using adb over wifi seems to say that while you may not need to use su when running the necessary commands in the emulator, your device must still be rooted. So I cannot seem to figure out how to do this trying to use adb over wifi to get root, yet you need root to use adb over wifi.
Lastly, while I did note that your first link says only updated devices, I believe they are talking about the update to Froyo.
I guess this is the one main question I have:
Does anyone know -- or has anyone heard or read about -- a method to get temporary root on a MT4G with stock Gingerbread 2.3.4 using only the emulator???
Thanks... I am going crazy without root, and as said, I really want to avoid (as I am on a tight budget) purchasing another usb cable for $40, just to get a temp root.
I will try to sort out the issue as simple as i can
1. There is no method right now to root the 2.3.4 upgrade (even temproot).
2. To enjoy root access, you need to downgrade to Froyo (stock 2.2.1)
3. Do Permroot and then upgrade to GingerBread 2.3.4 or 2.3.5
4. Every post related to rooting is based on the stock Froyo Rom.
To downgrade, follow this post. Select the option best suited to you.
Also don't spent $40 for an OEM data cable. A replacement cable is available at price tag as low as $0.99
Just go to ebay & search for "micro usb cable". Just go through this link.
Have you installed the "HTC_drivers" file that comes on the root of the sdcard?
Possibly the reason why windows doesn't see it.
Or Make sure "USB Debugging" is enabled..
Not saying you haven't done either. Just putting it out there.
Sent from my HTC Glacier using xda premium
Thanks mahato... But yes. I have loaded the htc drivers, htc sync, pdanet.... All of them. Plus, I know all about usb debugging and it is on.
I have had it with this problem. The other thing that drives me crazy about my issue (which is why my phone was replaced in the first place, is that wifi calling keeps dropping), is that in my comprehensive research, I read one person's post that said that they confirmed that their 911 address needed to be filled out. Will I have done this and have done it through tmo. But I don't know if this was the problem, because I STILL KEEP GETTING THE DIALOG BOX which instructs me to complete my 911 address.
One more thing, since I need a cable to root this (which I know I can order cheaply), I might try to get a free usb cable from tmo...
But, before, I acquiesce to these problems and accept a new phone and just deal with it...
Can someone tell me how to confirm whether I have the ”bad chip” or ” bad screen”? I put a new screen protector on the new phone, and I thought that might be it, but I don't think so. My usual wall paper is the beautiful widgets living wallpaper which shows the blowing grass, etc.
However, when I look at my phone at an angle, the screen turns lighter, with practically zero contrast. I had read somewhere that this is a symptom, although I may be paranoid considering everything....
So does anyone know how to confirm a ” bad screen” or a ”bad chip” (I didn't even know there was a bad chip). Is there something I can check in the bootloader screen or something like that to confirm a component part number?

Reposted to new thread.
Ok, there are a lot of wrong statements in this thread and I don't have any time to cover them all.
Temp-rooting 2.3.4 requires running fre3vo. That's the only currently existing method.
fre3vo runs by exploiting msm_rotator.
I believe it's not documented whether the exploit absolutely requires link through ADB.
So, you could just try and see for yourself. In the worst case you'll discover that the temp root shell is given only to ADB and not to emulator.

returned replacement phone... PLEASE HELP -- NEED TEMP ROOT UNDER STOCK FROYO NO ADB

OK.... I said f*ck it to the replacement phone.... DOn't want it... Can't root it... (besides I found out it had the ****ty screen that is manufactured in Taiwan, not China). Further, I want to root it now and I cannot do it with stock gingerbread. Sending back replacement phone today...
BUT....Unfortunately, I restored Froyo to my old phone. So now I have an unrooted phone, with Android 2.2.1.
But.... I STILL DO NOT HAVE THE ABILITY TO CONNECT VIA USB TO USE ADB
I cannot use any wifi adb methods as they all require root.
I cannot use Visionary for temp root as the cyanogen root page wiki says it should be uninstalled.
Nonetheless, I copied all of the needed files to my sdcard, so I am ready....
BUT I NEED TEMP ROOT FROM THE EMULATOR.
Does anyone know how to get temp root for FROYO through the emulator only??.....OR, another Visionary type apk which will give me temp root???
Sorry can"t help on your problem, but how did you restore stock froyo? Had the same replacement prob, sent it back to T-mobile, called CS told them about issues, they're sending a MT4GSlide, call CS you might get lucky like I did
use the "how to root.sh root your phone".
i used that in the T-Mobile store to root my before i left the store when i bought the device.

The phone I restored to stock Froyo was my old phone... It was rooted already. I just wanted to restore it to a factory condition so I wouldn't have any problems returning my old, and rooted/heavily modded phone to TMO.
So I just took the .img that you can download from this thread LINK
Then you just make sure it is on the root of your sdcard, then boot into hboot by holding the volume down while pressing the power button. It will boot and think it is an "update", but it will just restore it to the stock.
Obviously this cannot be done from 2.3.4 because it realizes it is an old version... If you have a phone with stock 2.3.4 you have to trick it into letting you downgrade from gingerbread to froyo using this thread: LINK

That's great! But I told them about the fact I solved my wifi problem.... Besides, I already tried to shake them down for a Sensation... no go.
The Slide version looks great... Better camera and faster.... But for now, I will stick with the 4G regular unless I get another issue....
My solution (in another thread) to my wifi problem requires you select "wifi only" under the wifi calling app. If this becomes really problematic and inconvenient, I will call them back... Will try to get a Sensation again or a 4G Slide then.

Z4Root is another app that might work on Froyo.
You can manually execute psneuter or rageagainstthecage from Terminal Emulator. Search Google, it'll guide you for both.
Or you could just not listen to CM Wiki, and use Visionary.
I think Visionary screws things up pretty badly.... I found this out the hard way.
I think I have done a hard reset (removed battery + factory reset) about 8 times so far.
I have been using a combination of Visionary, followed by a root.sh script from this link. Then I do get root.... but it is tremendously precarious.
I then uninstall Visionary, use ADBwireless as I have root now and proceed to follow the Cyanogen instructions.....
But then... whenever I have to run psneuter, it boots me out of the adb shell and I have to start everything all over again.... I have to do a factory reset to get Visionary to work that one f*cking precious time.
I just tried it again just now (I have been modifying steps and things to get it to work)... And now... every time I do a factory reset and run visionary, I don't get a Superuser Root... I get "UNKNOWN USER ROOT" in the emulator.... I have know idea what that means, but it is not root....
I have been at this for days and losing my mind. I cannot believe I can't root this phone.... especially now in Froyo... Without a god**mn USB CABLE!!!

z4 root doesn't work with the MT4G...
Hey... I had a thought..
Since I have nandroid backups... If I get a Visionary root (if I can....), can I just restore my phone with one of them... I mean those backups are all simunlock, eng hboot, radio =111111111, etc. full root.
But... I thought I would ask so I do not have to do another 15 hard resets to figure out that it doesn't work.

no, because VISIONary.apk only gives root access, not S-off. S-off is needed to flash Clockworkmod Recovery, which is needed to flash the backups.

Thanks... and for whatever reason... even though I think I rooted my phone successfully, I cannot restore any of my nandroid backups... I get an error in Rom Manager.... and while in recovery, I get an error of "files missing".
Now I cannot even boot the phone. It is stuck at the myTouch Splash.
I am so f*cking tired of doing this... Nothing has worked--
I cannot believe I reset this phone to Froyo in anticipation of sending it back....
I ended up keeping it because it had the better screen and because I thought I had solved my wifi problem...
I am without a phone at all at this point.

And to add to that, gfree doesn't exactly require ADB.
You can use that paid root app to manually push the necessary files into system>data>local.

I finally managed to do it. But it took a lot of trial and error.
I learned:
You can only be rely on exactly 1 temp root from visionary after a factory reset. Any more and you are getting lucky.
Visionary definitely should be uninstalled before following that guide.
I may make a guide after belabouring 17 hours to accomplish this.
I guess I am lucky... If TMO had sent me a phone with a good screen, I would have been tempted to keep that one. If I did, it would have been stock 2.3.4, and I would probably not have root yet.

[Q] and now I'm desperate - serious help needed

Ok, first of all I know there are a million threads about rooting, believe me, I've looked through all of them otherwise I wouldn't be here posting
Now, my problem is that I finally want to root my HTC-Hero to give the fella some new life. However, I have literally tried everything and nothing has worked so far.
I have tried:
Superoneclick
Androot
Z4
via command prompt (coupled with sdk)
Info about my phone:
firmware 2.1 - update 1
build number 3.36.405.1
so far there seems to be a consistent problem: su is found in the folder bin, superuser is placed as should in 'apps'. however, superuser doesn't show up in my app list (yes I've tried rebooting a million times) and via connectbot (terminal) it simply either denies access to su or does not seem to change $ to #. Furthermore, all programs (s.o.c. - androot & Z4root say 'you're rooted' .. however, this is not true).
I am seriously desperate at this point because I want to run cyanogenmod, find a nice theme and gain root access altogether to make my phone a bit snappier. All help is welcome (I'm willing to try anything at this point!).
Thanks in advance !!!
Ok. If either people can't or won't help.. can someone at least point me in the right direction ?? pretty please with lots of sugary **** on top
I think there was a big hoo-haa about HTC locking out root quite well on their 2.1 update. I've been rooted since 1.5 so I didn't pay too much attention, but I think you had to make a goldcard then downgrade to 1.5 in order to root the official 2.1. Its an older method, but as you said all the other methods didn't work, I guess that is your best bet.

Nope, I rooted with Androot from the Official 2.1 update. I used this guide: http://www.villainrom.co.uk/forum/s...de-Newbie-Guide-to-Install-VillainROM-amp-FaQ
He said he used androot with no success though, which is why I suggested goldcarding it.
Try this link same like the villain rom above , I would suggest you try the ADB way
its much more easier
http://www.villainrom.co.uk/forum/showthread.php/1930-How-To-Root-The-2.1-RUU-or-OTA-Update-For-The-Hero
Gold Card is not required anymore.. there are more easier ways like through ADB if you do it properly
Hi guys thanks for the suggestions. I've tried them but still without luck so far. I guess I will indeed try the goldcard method sometime soon because I think I'm running out of other options.
It's quite weird to say the least though since UniAndroot does say 'woot! you're rooted' but SU doesn't show up and in terminal I still can't get superuser access.
sigh
Uninstall your superuser first, then open androot and root again. The androot will install a superuser in your phone, then you can run it normally.
I had same problem problem, hopefully it helps you

failed root need help

So on my girlfreindd my touch 4g I installed and ran invisonary r14 at first I checked temp root on startup and mount system and clicked temproot now.....the su Popped up but phone restarted before I can click allow. After rebooting it was very slow and then I went back into it and click permanentroot but says to do temproot .....so I did it agian an after rebooted clicked permanentboot and restarted but my phone is not rooted....su is installed and I have Apps that say its not rooted so when I try again visionary just flashes and goes back to the apparently so now it wont even temproot to permanentroot and su is installdd and it says its not root so I can't un root so is there anyway of doing this or am I stucl
First off all : VISIONary.apk is a one click root tool but the security flags on our phones turn off the SU ability and remove root commands upon rebooting.
Second of all : you really didn't search this because every "root method" i've seen mentions using one of two different method to root our phones. Either ./gfree or root.sh. The search button works wonders
Third and final : I'm assuming since you gained SU access via VISIONary.apk you are still rocking 2.2.x. You can use the links in my signature for both methods. However i highly suggest you read the newcomers thread first.
Did you search, read before posting? If you are on gingerbread 2.3(which I'm pretty sure you are) you can't root with visionary.
If you're still on froyo 2.2, there's a lot of how to's here and on google.
EDIT:^^^^exactly what he said.

Its very easy and very safe if you follow the directions to the T. It takes me 5 minutes tops to root and gain s-off with the visionary, root.sh method. I have never messed up.

HTC phones are very easy to root, you just need to follow directions and obtain S-off. once Security is off, rooting and flashing is painless.
