We just got 3g 1/27/11 and wondering if sprint upgraded from 2g to 4g? I don't have an evo to check, its not listed on Sprint's 4g cities
It would be a shocker to wait this long for 3g and find we got 4g
My guess is we would have to wait on Clearwire to get 4g not Sprint?
Not that this means anything but .. 4G sprung up at I10 and College St in Beaumont, TX, just to your West, a few weeks ago. It seems to be 1 - 3 towers worth of coverage around that address.
Unfortunately coverage does not seem to be expanding yet.
Check out Lake Charles, LA on this map: clear.com/coverage. It looks like there is a 4G tower online, but it's just like Beaumont .. very weak coverage so far.
(Sorry can't post links yet)
nope
Don't see Louisiana listed?

In lake charles works great inside mall and around Ryan & prien lake rd farther out you have to be by a window or outside. Speed max is 5 mbps down 1 up
yes
T-Mobile is going to be the first to officially have 4G in Lake Charles
i recently found out it is available now (i blogged about it here)
but once the speeds can be considered true '4G' it will be the first in southwest Louisiana =]
I'm getting it in the Lake St/ Sale Rd area. It was one of the first things I checked when i got my EVO 3D. In fact, I'm on it now walking around my neighborhood.
look again
I'm in south Lake Charles on my 3vo with no 4G and has not worked anywhere. It shows 4G antenna on but its still on 3G.

In the mall yesterday, I got good and strong signal. According to opensignal, I'm connecting to sprint wimax. Speedtests are over double 3G.
sorry
sorry but I will have to see it for myself, heck we just got 3g 1/27/11 on Sprint, one of the last cities in the US to get 3G. I don't think we'll get 4g anytime in the near future

In south central LC along the 210 loop it's there. Opensignal shows connection to Sprint WIMAX, as does the 4G connection. It's not official, but it is there.

I kind of like the idea. T-Mobile gets a bigger coverage area and Sprint gets more customers (meaning: we get more 4g towers if they stick with WiMax).
Thoughts?
Hasnt Sprint already learned their lesson about merging two different companies with seperate technologies? I would hope so...

I would actually be kind of pissed about this. I had T-Mobile for 8 years, until last year when I switched to Sprint and the Evo, they moved me to a non-contract plan without my consent(could not find any signed documents anywhere to prove I agreed to this) and would not let me back into a contract. If I wanted the phone discount I had to get a new phone number and contract. So, now I am with Sprint.
From a network standpoint, I would love it. T-Mobile has the best coverage here in AZ.

Well yeah, the short term challenge is keeping both services running, but eventually they'll get it straightened out.
The G2, the Evo, the MyTouch 4g and the Shift all on the same network? I could get used to that. My G2 could get activated again!

Why would we get more 4G towers by merging with T-Molbile if they don't use WiMax? T-Mobile uses HSPA+ for 4G.
Would this mean I would owe Sprint the $1800 that I owe T-mobile???? I sure hope not.

If it happens, then I believe it would cement Sprint into the transition to LTE. Best way for them to eliminate the technological divide.

Precisely, I think Sprint is doing this to switch to LTE and the transition will be easier with this acquisition. They would not do this to switch T-mobile to wimax and cdma. I think Sprint is looking seriously to make the change and is behind in the LTE race to Verizon and ATT. T-mobile and other partnerships they are pursuing will make the road to LTE much faster. Could be wrong though.
Great idea...Hopefully they keep CDMA & GSM so I can have my Evo on my main line & I can switch between a few GSM devices on my second line.

Hey I just talked to your credit. It said LMFAO.
i do not see this happening even though ive seen this rumor on several sites. i mean would sprint go gsm then? or would they offer both cdma & gsm phones?
i mean sprint does not allow any phone they do not sell onto their network. if this happens tons of iphone users will be pissed off.
Isn't the old nextel Network the same as Tmobils? Sprint could just phase out cdma and combine the tmobil and Nextel networks, then convert all wimax to LTE. Although they might have an issue with the people who bought wimax phones, they could just give them $200 toward a new lte 4g phone with a 2 year contract and call it a day.

1. iDEN network is being phased out in 2013, freeing up spectrum for Sprint's 3G/4G.
2. Switching to LTE is supposed to be 'easy' since it shares 70-80% of its DNA with Wimax.
3. Sprint's Network Vision will consolidate its different network equipment/stations, making them take up less space and less cost to run.
4. T-Mobile is in dire need of spectrum, which Sprint/Clearwire has a lot of.
5. T-Mobile has not yet adopted a new 4G network (LTE) beyond its enhanced HSPA network marketed as '4G'.
HSPA+ > all 4G (WiMax or LTE)
I think this is a great idea.... the problem of separate networks was solved ages ago.. dual mode GSM/CDMA phone.... If sprint did this they would increase the footprint and just use dual mode phones and there we go done deal.
Before Sprint went CDMA, they were called Sprint Spectrum, using GSM. When Sprint made the switch to CDMA they spun off their GSM network into a company called Voice Stream, which later became T-Mobile. If Sprint were to merge with T-Mobile, it would just be Sprint bring home it's off spring.

I wouldn't move just for 4G. It's seriously not that big a deal. I live in a 4G area and I very, very rarely turn on my 4G radio.
However, I see in your info that you live in Dexter, so you might want to GTFO no matter what! lol (I grew up in Sikeston!)
Great sprint is sticking to a slow ass 4g network that I can't use indoors and is available for 10% of the population lol
I hope the tmobile thing happens though. Would be nice to have done real 4g.

The article doesn't say no LTE. It says they intend to continue working with clearwire. It doesn't preclude that they'd do an LTE network of their own, or that clearwire would move to or add LTE.
And CEO statements on future plans are valid for only as long as it takes the sound to leave their mouth. Sometimes not even that long.

Ignore The Smoke: Sprint And Clearwire Are Absolutely Going LTE
CEO Continues To Downplay Massive Shift On Horizon
by Karl Bode 3 hours ago tags: coverage · business · hardware · bandwidth · consumers · Sprint Telecom · wireless · Clearwire Wireless · Clearwire
Yesterday we exclusively reported that Lightsquared would be ditching Nokia for their LTE network build, instead piggybacking on Sprint's base station overhaul being conducted by Alcatel-Lucent, Ericcson and Samsung. Speaking at the Deutsche Bank Media and Telecom Conference today (audio here), Sprint CEO Dan Hesse reiterated Sprint's dedication to Clearwire and WiMax, despite numerous signs the company is ready to go the LTE route, alone if necessary. "Every option that we're looking at, every one includes WiMAX and Clearwire," Hesse informed attendees, while insisting that neither Clearwire or Sprint have made any decision to migrate to LTE.
Click for full size
That's in sharp contrast from what we're hearing from numerous insiders at both companies. Several sources familiar with Sprint's engineering agenda note that Sprint absolutely will be going LTE, though WiMax service will be run simultaneously initially. Aside from the energy efficiency and cost savings, LTE flexibility is among the top reasons for Sprint's recently announced $5 billion base station retrofit.
Insiders familiar with Clearwire's plans meanwhile tell Broadband Reports Clearwire has also already made the decision to embrace LTE -- and the only question is what specific flavor of LTE and what vendor(s). Next month Clearwire executives will attend a test of three different LTE technologies from various vendors, including TD-LTE and FD-LTE, outside of Scottsdale, Arizona. Meanwhile, several Clearwire sources insist the company has placed a freeze on the installation of any new Mobile WiMax basestations.
While it's clear that all of this signals the inevitable death of Mobile WiMax as a serious player in North America (outside of niche application), what isn't clear is the width and breadth of Sprint and Clearwire's future relationship. That won't be fully apparent until Sprint and Clearwire negotiations are complete. Sprint's future plans could very well include Clearwire, though Sprint has been engaged in a significant number of contingency plans in case Clearwire falters, ranging from their as-yet-unannounced partnership with Lightsquared, to this week's renewed rumors of a potential T-Mobile/Sprint merger. Expect Lightsquared to make some of this official at CTIA later this month.
dont care if its 4g or LTE ... FIX YOUR DAMN 3g data !
yeah article doesn't say they wont go LTE just that they are sticking with WiMax for a long time with Clearwire. Its been rumored also for awhile that they could do dual WiMax and add LTE on the old nextel freq. Which makes sense, why ditch wimax and that use of the spectrum if you dont have to? There not putting LTE in that band so it makes no sense to get fully rid of WiMax.

Each area listed in the rollout really encompasses many cities. For instance in wave 2 starting in May it lists Orlando but clicking on that link you find Orlando really includes about 8-10 cities including Daytona and Holly Hill where I live. So that is what is meant by 70 cities by the end of 2012.

It'd be a real dilemma to have to subsist on 3G (which is pathetic in many Sprint areas) when getting an LTE phone if all you have is WiMax 4G in your area for the foreseeable future. I hope I can make it to the end of 2012 with the Epic, letting my contract expire and so on. Lot of uncertainty with Sprint these days, although I'd like to stick with them if I can.
When are we getting a slider? The real question should be when are we getting ANY new phone lol. We are in a major phone drought right now while everyone waits for the lte rollout. Ugh...

If VZW had a decent slider, I would have jumped ship a while ago. Droid 4 isn't much better than what we have (actually, worse), so staying with Sprint.
The Epic 4G came out in August 2010, so hopefully the 2-year anniversary yields an awesome new slider phone with:
- 4G LTE
- 4-inch+ screen
- 8MP+ camera
I will ditch my Epic 4G in Q4 2012 or Q1/Q2 2013 depending on Sprint's LTE coverage and Clearwire's planned LTE rollout. If Sprint gets rid of its unlimited data plans, then I may jump to Verizon.
unfortunately att and verizon are just to expensive. the plans are way more than sprint & tmobile. But push come to shove i may jump to att. they are slightly less expensive than verizon and i may get a discount for having uverse tv & internet.
this lack of phone options from sprint is getting really old.
Will this make you finally change your Evo?... check it out and hopefully your area is getting hooked up....

I was looking at that last night and thinking, no matter how great the EVO x is my EVO still holds it's own. Since Michigan will be blanketed in LTE by 2014, I am going to wait, Sprint has great plans, but lightsquared drama has to negatively impact their LTE roll out.
And why buy a phone in 2012 when I can't use 4G until a year or 2 years later. I did that with EVO, and assumed a Verizon kind of roll out.
I really hope Sprint stays on track with LTE roll out and they may retain me otherwise VZW with unlimited data might get my business (yes if u try hard enough u can get it)
Sent from my Synergized Aggressive Lionfish Evo using the XDA app
Yea, it says they will be ready by 2014, but with no specific rollout dates for my area, Michigan, I will be switching to Verizon in the next few months, once they get a nest gen phone like the One X or something similar. Verizon has had working 4g for over a year in my area now. There's no way I'm waiting another 2 years to get it here, and have dial-up speed 3g in the meantime. I gave Sprint 12 years of my business, and I hate to leave, but in today's world data is everything, and I need that to be able to do my job.
With the announcement one the HTC EVO One for Sprint, I am puzzled as to how they decide what cities to start their rollout of LTE. San Antonio? Baltimore? Kansas City?
No New York, Los Angeles, Miami, Chicago, etc.
OK, so Houston and Dallas. Meh.
With an LTE iPhone possibly coming out later this year, how many iPhonies do they think will hang on waiting while both Verizon and AT&T (yuk) are offering LTE in the biggest markets?
Sure, they're saying just wait, but really, how many people have the discipline? I probably will, but only because returning to AT&T is not an option as far as I'm concerned, and I hear horror stories about big red nickle and dimeing their customers.
What incentive do I have to get the HTC EVO One when there won't be any LTE here in LA, while my old EVO can still use WiMax?
On an unrelated question: does anyone know if LTE phones automatically switch between 3G and LTE? One thing I always hated about WiMax is having to manually turn it on every time I want to use it!
Pretty sure LTE would require manual control just like WiMax.

Hey now! Some of use are awful excited that Dallas is on that list!
But seriously. I'm wondering if the Dallas choice was because of the AT&T headquarters and the fact that Sprint phones are getting MURDERED by att speeds. (At least where i'm at)
Nothing against Dallas. Texas is a great country.
I just think Sprint needs to make a big splash about LTE if they want to limit churn. Dan Hesse has done an outstanding job so far, imo. But if I were in charge of Sprint, I would make NY,and LA, among the first cities, just for PR purposes.
Even aliens know to blow up one of those two cities when they first invade Earth!

SECOND ROUND MARKETS (27):
Second round markets start based on First Round markets completing before them. There is a lot of variability of when Second Round markets start, between June/July 2012 and December 2012. It will all depend on how quickly the First Round market deployments go. Some preliminary work is being done in advance in these Second Markets as well. It's possible that if delays begin to occur in the First Round markets, NV OEM's may hire up additional subcontractors and get some key Second Round markets going. Stay tuned to S4GRU.com for updates.

I also heard that maybe just maybe the Note may be coming over as well the HTC One... Sprint may be stepping there game up.. After reading up on the new HTC phone I may be coming back as long as though LTE speeds kick in like they should in my area...
Michigan part of the 2nd wave and no Ohio, c'mon man! This is why I hate Ohio, can't wait to move..LOL

I don't know about the rest of you, but forget LTE coverage -- I'm just waiting for Sprint to get regular coverage on the tower that's been my in my neighborhood like they promised (and their coverage map showed) for the last 3 years!
I have found the Wimax coverage in Florida to be more than adequate. No, I can't get it at my house, but I have WiFi there. But just about everywhere else when I'm traveling or in even small local cities, I get Wimax.
Sprint is about two years behind on LTE. Not very enticing to stay with them after my contract is up in the Fall. The only reason why I didn't demand early contract termination is because I like my EVO 4G phone and don't feel like spending another $300 on a new Verizon phone at the moment.
Nah Verizons, and att switches. So sprints will prob
