not deoxed so no rom manager? - Droid X General

So i've been looking to theme my X and someone told me to use Rom Manager for themeing because it's easy. But if all i did was a basic root and i didn't change bootloader or i'm not deoxed or whatever else you can possibly do to this phone will this mess my phone up? Or is it fine to use to theme my phone with just a basic root?

Rom Manager will need the Bootloader in order to do the installs. Rom Manager basically boots into recovery and installs the .zip file you downloaded.
If you don't Deodex your phone and install a theme, I do not think it will 'break', but your theme is likely to be half-a$$ed. Themes replace images (which should still work even if not de-odex) and they edit certain parts of other files (services.jar for example) to change the colors of some text. If your phone is Odexed, the coding for those colors will not be in the right place and thus won't change.

You can Deodex. You can either follow the manual process (there is a thread in the Themes section.
Or if you want to download Rom Manager/Bootstrap, you can then either load a complete system (Nandroid backup) of a 2.2/rooted/deodexed system (There's one of these in the Themes section as well)
Or there is a version of the 928Droid Black Glass that supposedly will Deodex your system while it installs the theme ...

Getting Started on Theming

Ok i've Rooted the Desire,
and I tried Metamorph, however it needed Busybox, but that won't install, does anyone know a fix for this?
I'm also wanting to be able to get into the file system on the device, how do i do this?
I'm trying to get skinning the UI for my own amusement, but also to release to the community, so where would i find the stock theme on the file system, or where can i download it?
and how do i impliment it?
TIA
Luke.
Metamorph won't work on Desire because there is no write access to /system.
thanks for the heads up the personal who suggested this, never pointed that out.
so is the Desire Semi rooted then?
I think not fully rooted fits better. In custom recovery there is a access to system but not while the desire is running the os itself.
To theme you have to edit the apks in framework-res and so on. Here is a short tutorial for editing the apks without metamorph.

Reflash a theme already installed

I was just wondering if there are a clever trick to reflash a theme already installed on the device.
In this particular situation I have changed some of the icons in the framwork-res.apk. I then copied them to the theme, wich is BrightSilence, and tried to flash it all over again. Result - bootloop.
So, is there any step you could do to circumvent this, or is the only option to reflash the ROM. and then the theme?
Thanks
Yes, just reflash a unmodified version of, in your case, BrightSilence or am i missing something?
Or revert to the nandroid you made before messing with the system partition.
The thing is that BrightSilence is already installed on the device, but now I want another set of icons. Flashing the theme again with the modified framework-res just result in a bootloop.
It seems there really is no shortcut, than to reflash ROM, then new theme.
Thanks anyway.

U are wrong.
Installing theme - means overwriting some files into new ones, not adding or removing some.
So if u changed framework file, flashed and got bootloop - u can flash theme again (overwrite bad file) and boot correctly.

I do get that really. But what now if I want to apply a new framework-res? I know I can always nandroid my self out of a bootloop.

U have to mod framework correctly and will not end in booloops.
Use Apk Manager to decompile, change, compile and sign framework-res.apk.
Do not push file via adb - use flashable zip.

But the framework-res is from the UOT, shouldn't that be packed/signed properly?
Well, I am going to try anyway, thanks!
EDIT: Tried to cook a new file, with the exact same framework-res I used earlier. Used UOT to cook, and worked perfectly. Thanks to mendozinas! ;-)

DL09 deodexed ROM

Does anyone have a DL09 ROM that has been deodexed but still has all of the bloatware?
Nothing against the developers of the current DL09 ROMS I just want to be able to take out exactly what I want.
I searched and couldn't find anything...

unzip a deodexed rom and get the apk you want.
use search to find a deodexed rom with all apk's
it has been discussed a number of times within the forum
+1
I would like to see this as well, as what I want doesn't seem to play nice with the phone. Ultimately, what I want is a stock, de-binged, de-odexed DL09, that still has the bloatware I can custom remove, and want to replace the Car dock with the google-friendly one (part of de-binged), desk dock and music player with AOSP versions, and the accurate circle battery fix. The de-odexed DL09 rom I found from adrynalyne is debloated, removing some apps I want. And my attempts to add them back, such as Write&Go, fail to install and Root Explorer won't allow me to dropt it into System/Apps. I also like the option to flip to TW Launcher if I choose and have the full selection of Samsung Widgets to play with to shake things up.
Get Samsung Apps from sonofskywalker3's section of ROM Manager.

did you set the system/apps to R/W access? The new versions of Root Explorer default to R/O.
Adrynalyne's DL09 supah clean 0.4 has TW still included, and ADW as well. You should be able to add all the apps you want back to it without issue. I've restored MMS and VVM without issue, and have a theme w/ circle battery installed, running snappy as hell.

Yeah, my root explorer is mounted as r/w, but when i choose to paste the .apk in the system/app folder, does nothing
What I REALLY wish we had was a kitchen for roms. Blackhole is close, but doesn't have all options available. I've seen a port from the Vibrant forums that looks promising. Times like these make me wish I had learned a programming language

[Q] Customising a custom ROM

OK, finally decided to pass on to a custom ROM, and the choice fell on sunaabh 1.1
Now the question is, I downloaded the ROM and I see it's a standard zip file. Is it possible to further customize it by removing/substituting/adding/updating files in the correct folders, and then flash it normally?
As an example, update the hosts file, removing the useless HTC apps, preinstalling titanium or any other app I like?
If it is possible, should I unzip the ROM, do my things, and zip it back, or does it require anything special?
Thanks in advance!

Yes, it should be as simple as that. Most likely you do not need to re-sign the rom.zip since you're already using a custom recovery (assuming you have rooted your phone), but I signed mine anyway, so I didn't get to confirm it myself. Good luck and have fun!

You can do exactly that. Open it up, mess around, making sure everything stays in the correct folder, zip it back up, and you're done. No need to sign if you're on Clockworkmod recovery.

Soft key color change?

I'm curious if anyone has used Rom Toolbox, and knows if it can change the color of the three soft key colors (you know, back, home, task mgr)? Or do you know how to do this WITHOUT running a ROM. I'm not a big fan of ROMs. I know how to manually replace the boot animation, but figured if ROM Toolbox can do both of these, then I will use it. Either my search skills are very crappy (which I know to be fact, lol) or nobody has ever really posted about this. Any help would be appreciated. These are last two things I need to finish my customizing. Thanks.
EDIT: CRAP! Can a mod move this to the Q&A? That's where I was, and I somehow ended up in the General section, lol. Thanks.
Edit the systemui.apk file, in the res/drawable-hdpi folder all the icons are there.
Custom ROM not needed, just root since it's a system file.

More difficult than thought. I extracted SystemUI.apk from "system/app", replaced the default images with the ones I want to use, zipped it back up, renamed it from SystemUI.zip to SystemUI.apk, and then when I attempted to paste it back into system/app, it wouldn't let me since the folder is read only. I can't seem to change the permissions of "/system/app" so that I can paste this in there. I had a feeling this try wouldn't work, as I got the instructions from a Galaxy Nexus instruction which stated that it would really only work if a deodexed ROM was installed, but figured i'd give it a shot anyway.
I also tried using ROM ToolBox. Created my theme, but it says the theme is incompatible when I try to install it (followed the directions step by step for creating the theme). Looks like I may have to contact the developer of RTB since it would appear that the Nexus 7 isn't supported yet.
"We have compared the images and apps with your current system and have determined that this theme will not work for your current device setup."
Any other thoughts? Am I doing something wrong? Just don't really have a need for a full fledged ROM. Just wanna change 3 little software buttons, lol.
EDIT:
Forgot to mention that I also tried Zip Themer, but like RTB, it doesn't support Nexus 7 yet. I'll be sure to inform both developers
Use root explorer, put the modded apk on your SD then using the phone copy it from SD to /system/app with root explorer and click the mount r/w button at top , or use adb t push it to the device

If your rom is odexed (which the stock.rom is), then you will not be able.to achieve what you want...
You will need to deodex your rom before theme'ing
