I'm buying one tomorrow and i heared that there is a very limited number of available apps in the Andoid marcket because of QVGA resolution, what about this rumor?. Can someone tell me if there is a significant number of apps available.
Looking foward for a reply
Best Wishes to all
interested too...
well, I don't know because i don't have it, but it's strange... many android apps shouldn't care about the screen size, or, almost, that's what i hope!
let us know, dear users!
Unfortunately, yes. There is a limitation
And not due to market but to devs who don't allow their app for QVGA (even it works well).
Anyway i'm huge app user and I find almost 90% of my usual apps. So not a big deal and u can always find alternatives to find the missing apps ;-)
On the X10mini we had a trick, installing the tattoo patched market, but since I have the "new" market on my flipout, i don't want to lose it.
okey i was downloading lots of apps and there are LOTS really, no big deal with this issue,
someone know a really missable app?
mixzing and radar now! are (or where) missing on the charm. (pretty much the same phone
I've contacted the devs, and they provided direct APK's but didn't specify if they'd make the app compatible/available in the market
Radar Now!
http://www.radarnow.net/apk/rn_2_4.apk
Mixzing
http://www.mixzing.com/install/android/com.mixzing.basic.apk
Is there anywhere we can find a list of the missing apps? I'm not too concerned because there are often apps missing from the markets of different handsets. For instance angry birds was not available on the galaxy s. And the g1 still offers pacman for free. However it would be nice to know what's missing.
Also has anybody come across apps where the square screen has been an issue. Maybe part of the screen cropped at the bottom? Or anything similar?
Usually there is no issue at all, however a compass APP that I downloaded thought I was holding the device differently and therefor showed north as always being east.
Radar now usually fills the entire screen on my mytouch, however on my wifes charm it needs to be slightly scrolled down to see the weather and stuff.
Beyond that though I have not run into any other issue with any app, including games.
Angry birds would run, if it could fit on the damn device....

Thank you very much. A bit of scrolling or having to turn the handset around now and then I can deal with. I think I will be buying 1 of these soon
Use a hack
if you want to be able to load "all" apps:
On a rooted phone, you can use this replacement for the market app:
xda-dev thread
But because locations on the Flipout are a bit different, use this:
Code:
adb shell
su
mount -o rw,remount /dev/block/mtdblock7 /system
exit
adb pull /system/app/com.android.vending.apk Vending.old.apk
adb push Vending.apk /system/app/com.android.vending.apk
or from a terminal on the Flipout
Code:
su
mount -o rw,remount /dev/block/mtdblock7 /system
cp /system/app/com.android.vending.apk /sdcard/Vending.old.apk
cp /sdcard/Vending.apk /system/app/com.android.vending.apk
Once you use the new Market, you can get all apps, except for those that have additional requirements (for example, an autofocus camera )
After using it for some time, I had a problem where Market would FC once the app finished downloading, and I had to the manually go to /cache and install it from there. To fix that you copy the old Vending.apk, reboot, and then copy the new apk again. Maybe the above thread has a fix for this problem... I haven't checked.
Most apps work really well on the Flipout!
Yes but...this is the old market ^^ Not the one with automatic updates and new tab for comms.
No way I'll go back to the old one :/
But for people who don't have a lot of apps, it's good solution, used it on my x10mini and was fine

But you can switch between them, no?
The old market when you want to search for an app, and the new one for updates (i.e. most of the time). Oh... maybe if an app isn't found it can't get updated? Hmmm....
BTW: I'm curious - do most people use auto-update? I haven't yet, because I heard of too many cases of an update breaking the app. I like to wait a bit, and see that it doesn't break stuff. I guess it depends on how much you need the particular app....
2 markets in 1 Android OS ?!?
2 Windows Explorer in 1 Windows OS ?!?
Think it's not possible ^^ market is part of the OS
"update breaking the app".....? I use Android for 11 months now and constantly update manually my apps through the market and never had a problem with it !!??
So why automatic updates would break it :/
IMO Market V2 is a great great improvement and I was waiting for it for months now

Actually the market is not part of the os... it is a system app called vending.apk
So a system app is not part of an OS :/ Right
So we can have 2 versions of the market on our androphones ? (Incredible !)

That is correct, once rooted the system apps can be removed, changed, and manipulated
OMG I think you really take me for a huuuuuuge noob ^^
So u definitely confirm u succeed in having 2 different versions of the market working at same time on your androphone ? (2 markets in your drawer)
If yes , you're right I feel in shame cos I thought I had a better andro level for 11 months manipulating it and I'm in fact a big noob.
If no, I'm right from the beginning and that was indeed a useless talk ^^

It depends... what markets are they? Are you referring to 2 versions of the same android market?
Even better solution
I followed the instructions of hacking Vendor.apk, and produced one out of the new Market app.
So, included below is the result: new Market app, for Flipout with larger screen apps enabled.
Till now, it works really well. I see lots of apps (>1900 video, as oposed to just a bit over 1000), and I have auto update and a comment tab.
Also, FC seem to be gone (since I started with the Flipout version), but maybe it is still too early to tell since I've only been using it for a day.
I also added the autofocus camera file, which enabled me to also see and install google goggles.
Directions for installation are (copied from the original post.)
Code:
adb pull /system/app/com.android.vending.apk Vending.backup.apk
adb push Vending_v2007.apk /sdcard
adb push android.hardware.camera.autofocus.xml.txt /sdcard/android.hardware.camera.autofocus.xml
adb shell
su
mount -o rw,remount /dev/block/mtdblock7 /system
cp /sdcard/Vending_v2007.apk /system/app/com.android.vending.apk
cp /sdcard/Vending_v2007.apk /data/app/com.android.vending.apk
cp /sdcard/android.hardware.camera.autofocus.xml /system/etc/permissions
chmod 644 /system/app/com.android.vending.apk
chmod 644 /data/app/com.android.vending.apk
chmod 644 /system/etc/permissions/android.hardware.camera.autofocus.xml
chown system.system /system/app/com.android.vending.apk
rm -r /data/data/com.android.vending
reboot
Run market enabler: in "Setting list" long press on [us] T-Mobile (T-Mobile) -> Fake this provider now.
Now Run Market Application (you should find it in the list of all installed applications if you set permissions correctly).
Be careful with autoupdate of your market (that will overwrite your changes).
If anything goes wrong: place your original Vending.apk files, set permissions, delete cache. It should be as before.
The hack did not allow me to download apps until I ran the market enabler. I'm not sure why that is.
The one I used is called "MarketAccess".
Just an update....angry birds will not let you get past the first screen that shows you how to play the game. You cannot click the "check" to go past that screen as it is off the side.
I'm wondering if one of those density switcher apps might resolve this?
Mine works
Strange... my version of angry birds works, no switcher. I forgot where I got it from, 'cause I couldn't find it on the market.
It is caled AngryBirds_1.3.5.apk. Is it ok to post it here? It's a free version.
Oh, there, I tried it again. Once you get to the first screen with a crosshair on the pig, press home (home key), then once out of angry birds, enter it again, and you'll see the options. From then on it plays well.

Here is some code I wrote to limit adMob apps to 1 ad.
cd /
find -iname app_admob_cache -print0 | xargs -0 rm -r | xargs -0 ln -s /dev/null
you can significantly speed this up using
Code:
for x in `find /data -name app_admob_cache`; do rm -r $x; done
EDIT: forgot to explain why.
your method searches the entire device for app_admob_cache. the only place it should exist would be in /data/data (but i was lenient and let it search the entire /data partition.)
there are only 3 mounts that are read/write anyways, cache, data, and sdcard.
Thanks to both of you, very helpful!
What will this help do.
Now, this is interesting. I mean, it's such a "duh" thing, but I certainly never thought of it. I don't see it being particularly useful... might make admob ever so slightly less annoying... but still, cool find/idea.
Do I use adb or terminal for this? I've tried using both but seen no results as the "xarg" is not found.

I used terminal on a cynogen mod, your signature says your using a official release which seams to be missing xargs (busybox).

It helps you lower the number of admob ads to 1 making them slightly less anoying. It does this by searching for the admob cache folder and removing it then making a link for those folders to /dev/null so it does not refill.
I posted this code in the hope that it helps others device a way to completly remove the ads for people like me who would never ever click on them anyways.

I'm no expert but I noticed that this app called droid swap (swapper clone) has an option to download busybox. not sure if it works, but if you're rooted give it shot.
You guys should just use Adfree Android by BigTinCan, its in the market for free, and it works great, all it does is block hostnames from a list of known hostnames and so anytime you have an app with ads you just dont see the ad AT ALL. IMO whats even the point of cutting it down to ONE when you can already cut it down to NONE for free?

After installing busybox on my AOSP build, I still don't understand your instructions here. I've tried to enter this using adb and in the terminal and kept getting at "syntax error" message.
Can you post clearer instructions on how to do this?

You don't notice the hideous error message where the ad should be? I did use HOSTS to block ads on my phone, but I eventually got tired of pushing my HOSTS file back to my phone every time I flashed a new ROM, and decided that the ads weren't any uglier than the error message.

I don't get error messages. At first, I used to get one on the app SportsTap, which kinda rendered that app useless, but that has been fixed a few upgrades back. Now all I get is "blackness". No image, no words, just whatever ad that was supposed to be there being black out. And since many of the ad apps use a black background as the base to their GUI, it kinda blends in and I don't even notice. Apps like Quick Uninstaller or Shazam come to mind in which the lack of apps kinds of blends into the app.

Huh. Will have to try it again... I haven't tried it since I was on Cupcake. Back then, the ad was replaced by a little android peeking out with an error message saying "http://adcrap.adsite.com/8uncha13tt3rsandnum83r5 could not be found." It was hideous. But I used it since it made things faster by not loading the data.

Yeah sometimes the little android guy will pop up, but even that is rare and there is no text included. It's just the robot. And a reboot of the phone after re-updating takes care of that too.

You didn't need to do that; busybox *is* included with TheOfficial. You might need to substitute `busybox xargs' for `xargs' in the command, however.
hello
I can't find it any where so i need to ask, is there any way to get paid apps on my desire, when i can't download paid apps from market ?

I am in Denmark too. I use Marketenabler and so I can fake my provider as T -Mobil (US), and see both paid and free apps.

Yes.
Another easy solution is to use a sim card from another country where paid Android applications is possible. I have tried with an austrian sim card in Denmark without problems. Just download the applications using WiFi.
Unfortunately yes. It needs root privilege.
Sent from my HTC Hero using Tapatalk
There's a third way that requires neither root nor foreign sim. It does require that you install Android SDK on you computer, and it's a bit of a hassle to set up the first time, but once you've done that, you have easy access to paid apps. It's what I used before I rooted, and it worked like a charm.
It's too complicated for me to remember off hand, and I'm a new user so apparently I can't post links, but try googling "paid apps i emulator" or "paid apps i telefonen"; it's the top search result for me. *
(it's in Swedish, but being Danish you should have little difficulties with that; sorry non-Scandinavians - try googling key words... Although we're probably pretty much the only ones left without paid apps in Market by now
* If it doesn't work, let me now, and maybe I'll just post the whole damn thing right here (if I can get the author's permission).
move to USA or something is another solution LOL.
ok I think the safest way for you to do this is buy a sim from a country that has market enabled. Rooting your phone just to be able to buy apps is a bit risky. Installing the SDK might be the cheapest solution tbh. And you just cant brick your pc doing that
I was able to install the SDK, but I failed to grasp how to install market.

Not sure what you mean; you don't "install" Market per se...
Once you've installed SDK on your PC, you create an AVD (Android Virtual Device), which is basically an Android emulator on your PC. In this emulator you can buy whatever you want from Market, and then push (or copy) it to your actual phone.
Are you following a guide? If so, which, and how far have you gotten?
If you understand Swedish, try this (exchange | for / ):

Dear eham, it seems to be a good workaround for me (for I don't wanna risk rooting and dont wanna change to sim card too frequently), just a few questions to ask about the emulator method.
would I still be able to update the paid apps if I download the paid apps through emulator? and will I be able to install it back if I flash my phone?
thx

"Dear eham"? why so formal
The answers are yes and yes.
You own the app (it's tied to your google account), so it's yours to update or whatever, but as long as you're unrooted you will have to do it in the emulator (as you can't access the paid app's Market page on your phone), and then push the updated .apk to your phone, replacing the old one. Be sure to add an SD-card to your emulator, and use ASTRO in your emu-phone to backup your apps to it as your emu-phone will have the same ****ty amount of internal memory as your real phone (if it's anything like mine .
And yes. Use ASTRO (or any app backup.. app) to also backup your apps to your real SD and/or your PC, and you can reinstall them whenever you want.

Very well said, Thx mate! I'll go try it out! Really wanna support paid apps! Anyone got an idea when will Google bring paid apps to other countries or Paypal for paid apps? It's non-sense for me in HK to be able to buy N1 though Google checkout and not able to buy paid apps.

You're welcome
Btw, you don't have paid apps in HK?! That surprised me, I thought for sure you did.
But yeah, I second the question. What's the damn holdup, Google? Anyone got the scoop?
The last I heard (for Sweden) was January 2010. I'm starting to think that's not gonna happen...
i had marketenabler for 2.1 but upgrading to 2.2 stops the program from working unfortunately... =/

It didn't only surprised you mate, you shocked me as well when Iphone's app store has already been working in HK since like 2-3 years ago? Man!
well, one more thing to ask, Google had just push out the newest SDK, I am using it for the workaround, but seems it uses 1.6 for the emulator, could I use 2.2 (or at least 2.1) instead so that I could install my apps onto the SD card?
besides, how could I push .apk to my phone? basically how could I find the stuff on SD on my emulator?
Like I said in an earlier post, I went and rooted my phone, so I haven't used the SDK method in a while, and I couldn't really tell you if you could use 2.2 or not. I see no harm in trying, but I'm going to leave the answer up to someone who might know a little better.
But really, why would you? Maybe I'm missing something, but once you've pushed/saved, and backed up, the apps, you don't really need them on the AVD (emu-phone) anymore, so if you're running low on memory just uninstall as needed. You've paid for them, so you can always reinstall from Market if you ever feel the need.
Not entirely sure what mean by the last part. If you mean how do you push the files that you moved to SD using App2SD, I don't know. I don't have 2.2 or A2SD, so again I'm going to have to leave that for someone else to answer. Personally, I probably wouldn't bother with a 2.2 AVD as I see no real benefit, but hey, that's me.
So to reiterate: Use 1.6.

Dear eham (I really have to be this formal to express my appreciation )
finally got all things sorted out and successfully purchased 1 app and pushed to my phone (automatically through Android market), finally I can show my appreciation to the apps developers!
well, even though I can now get paid apps, being a non-root user with 2.1, I still have to wait for the official Froyo update from HTC to further enjoy apps (my memory is certainly full just after the 2nd day I bought my Desire).
anyway, great great help from xda!
Glad I could help
If you compare the various, Galaxy Tabs currently available (Verizon, AT&T, Sprint & TMobile) it becomes obvious that there are fairly significant differences between the way they are configured. There are differences in memory, accessibility to Bluetooth keyboards and mice, DivX compatibility, etc. Has there been any info available as to how the WiFi-only Tab is going to be configured, when available? I'm waiting for one of these but I'm concerned that it will end up configured in some manner that I won't like and I would have been better to have gotten one of the currently-available models (probably the TMobile version) and not waited so long....I want one bad....
Ken
Ken, I just picked up a Sprint one and though we didn't choose data plans, wifi only, we kept getting this extremely annoying activate now message from sprint. It was easy enough to stop:
1) Download and install an app manager form the market, Astro or App Monster for instance
2) Locate and Download Z4Root
3) Install using the app manager you, then run the app and root the phone
4) Once rooted, reboot if not done already, go to the app market and download terminal emulator
Run the following commands in terminal emulator (no quotes):
“su”
“mount -o remount,rw -t rfs /dev/stl5 /system”
“rm -r /system/app/ sprintadroidextension.apk”
“mount -o remount,ro -t rfs /dev/stl5 /system”
“exit”
Close and reboot. Let me know, I tried to make it simpler for you so you don’t have to download and install all the sdk stuff.
Been looking for this fix... many thanks!
I am looking for one for wifi only. I am fairly familiar with rooting (phones anyway).
Is the Sprint version to best one to shoot for? They appear to run ~ $500 on Ebay but I have hesitated because I was worried about not being able to use it. The fix above looks very simple. Any other worries? Running outta days before Ho-Ho time and I need to get this done.
Thanks.
Got to third command line and my tab bricked. Anyone else have this happen?
YEA ME TO. ANYONE PLEASE HELP. My Galaxy Tab just keeps rebooting, it was RIGHT at the 3rd command line to.
Ouch! Not surprised because you've just removed /system/app in its entirety.
You're going to need to reflash at least the PDA part of your ROM.
This thread needs to be edited/deleted now before it screws up any more devices.
Regards,
Dave
I was just about to do this since I too have the Sprint version of the Tab.....everybody's tab ok? Any fix?
The fix is don't run a "rm -r" command unless you know *exactly* what it is going to do!
If you really want to remove this APK, and you don't know your *nix command line utilities from your elbow I suggest that you:
1. Root using z4root.
2. Buy Root Explorer from the Market
3. In Root Explorer browse to /system/app - press the "Mount r/w" button at the top of the screen.
4. Locate the file sprintadroidextension.apk and delete it (that file, and only that file!)
5. Press the "Mount r/o" button at the top of the screen.
That will remove the single APK referred to by "sirmacbeth" - I've no idea if this is actually stop any Sprint activation messages though, as I really must question "sirmacbeth"'s motives here because what he wrote as a guide ranks amongst the worst things I've seen on XDA.

You may have posted this on android forums as well. I have the same concern. I would ideally like the WiFi version to keep the same screen (rumored to not use samoled but lcd) as well as 16gb (or more) internal storage as well as the sd slot. And divx certified as well.
Also IF anything offering a world galaxy tab with all the above and gsm and cdma ability.

The Tab doesn't have an AMOLED screen - it's an LCD.

As far as motives goes I can't say anything about "sirmacbeth" but there is a intentional or unintentional "space" char left in his third step:
“rm -r /system/app/ sprintadroidextension.apk” and the correct command would be
“rm -r /system/app/sprintadroidextension.apk”
if there was no space there, people would have been deleting the app only but with that mistake they ended up deleting to whole app dir..
but, i agree, and the safest way to do this is to delete the file through an explorer app like advised..

Actually, there's no need for the -r - there would have been no problem if this hadn't been there, and it's completely superfluous for deleting a single file!

Dave
This method works, but deletion is rather permanent, why not "freeze" the app using Titanium Backup, or, (if you love the terminal), just rename the apk or move it to your sd card as a backup file. This way you can restore it if you need or want to later.
I also heard that putting it in Airplane mode will stop it and the wifi will still work.
ok, well since i was in the endless boot loop i used ZoinksS2k's ALMOST Stock ODIN ROM.
- Well that causes the GPS to stop working, and uses another phones modem driver.
*I called Samsung, i didn't tell them i was rooted, i just said i recieved this product when i booted it, everythign kept saying FC'd and then when i rebooted it, it went into an endless loop.
*They said I can send it in for a REFLASH.
What do you guys think? Should I do that? its free under warranty, OBVIOUSLY i'd UNROOT it before shipping it in.
Turn around time is about 5-7 days + shipping.

Airplane mode turns off all radios, including wifi. Beyond that, the activation process is governed by an application, not by the presence of networks. Unfortunately airplane mode won't fix it.

You can switch WiFi back on even when in Airplane mode. The standard power control widget won't let you do it, but you can do it from the settings menu and there are plenty of WiFi toggle widgets that will allow it too.

I had forgotten that, thanks for the reminder. Nevertheless, it won't fix the activation issue. Wifi on or off, unless you do something about the applications that check for and trigger an activation prompt, it's going to bug you for activation.
Hi folks,
I have a Verizon tab and i follow these steps to device stop asking for activation.
When the activation message shows up, i pressed the volume buttom at this order.
1 time vol. Up
2 times vol. Down
3 times vol. Up
4 times vol. Down

Let me start off by saying I am not a developer. And Im not too familiar with Linux either. Just goes to show that this isnt too difficult
To get ubuntu on the Atrix please go here first:
[MOD] Full Linux (Debian) inside WebTop! v0.2.6 [2011/07/07] [14.15 GMT+2:00] - xda-developers
Follow the steps. Must have CMW installed, rooted etc.
I was unsuccessful with webtop2sd. You might have good results with it, but for me it didnt.
Once you flash this cmw file, reboot you phone and enter into webtop (if you need the HDMI hack, you will find that on XDA). You will now see 3 new icons. Leafpad, Lxterminal, and a penguin. Click on the penguin, and you it will say found image. Click ok.
If your unfamiluar with linux, this will look french to you. Once it launches (the first time after reboot will take some time, be patient). Hit enter, enter again and scroll down to Shells, then hit enter on Bash. Now this is where the fun begins.
Enter synaptic. If that doesnt work you might need to install it. apt-get install synaptic. After thats opened search for gnome-panel, right click and select "mark for installation". Hit apply and go for a coffee. This will take a long time, and make sure your on wifi. This is a huge download.
Here is a list of working applications so far :
Epiphany web browser
Epiphany IM
Evolution Mail
Iceweasle
AbiWord
GNU image manipulation
All of the games
Im working on getting usb-to-ethernet dongle working.I can see it, just cant get access to it.
Almost all of the pre-installed applications with gnome work. EXCEPT sound. This is driving me nuts. I am unable to find a sound driver (gstreamer) that works. If anyone here figures it out let me know. And if anyone out there have programs that work let me know. I can always add it to the list. Im very green to Linux, and just playing around at this point. Im no developer, and most of your questions can be answered on XDA forums.
I have the same setup, and you can add openoffice.org and geany packages to the "functional" list. I use openoffice's writer every day and have found no missing functions. Geany is working, but does not build and compile, so it's basically a color-coded text editor (still useful for note-taking my language classes). I did NOT use synaptic to get these. I simply used the bash script (in the same manner you described for your synaptic install) to apt-get install openoffice.org and geany respectively. Nice thread,

My sound through the Webtop is functional, yes. I'm not sure if you were talking about gnome-specific apps (I wouldn't know, because I'm not using gnome panel), but anything through mobile view or iceweasel (not including flash) plays stereo through the Webtop. I didn't do anything special to get it working, it always just has. I hope you figure out your problem.

With epiphany did you encounter a problem where it uses xulrunner-1.9.2 instead of xulrunner-1.9 and fails to start the gecko engine? The epiphany version that is available through synaptic after fixing apt-get dependencies and sources uses xul1.9 once and works right then uses xul1.9.2 every time after that and fails. Epiphany lists both xul versions as deps so i, unsuccessfully, tried to lock xul1.9 and install a fake xul1.9.2. Any help would be awesome.
I did manage to make Webtop2SD work after I created a 4 GB partition on my ExtSD through Webtop2sd partitioning tool.
Here's what I got working (installed through Synaptic):
XFCE4 (full suite)
OpenOffice
GIMP
EPDFViewer
Fillezilla FTP client
VLC Media Player (marginal results)
Ristretto Image viewer
ABE's Amazing Adventure (game with full working sound)
I was hoping to have some sort of ScummVM, MAME and SNES emulator to run, but unfortunately they don't even after a successfull install.
Cheers!

I know it's a bit late for commenting lol. And probably my post may be off-topic. But was your issue the <no sound coming from HDTV via HDMI> one?
I also had this issue in webtop going on for like 3 months (like flashing and reflashing webtop to no end), until I stumbled upon this Motorola forum:
h**p://supportforums.motorola.com/message/330591#330591
(had to mod link because I didn't reach the minimum amounts of posts to allow links -_-)
Basically, if you switch display resolution to anything other than 1280x720, sound will not redirect to HDTV. And as for me, after switching to 1280x720, I had to reboot my Atrix in order to finally have sound . No need to find for drivers.
My sound would work within the Webtop apps from Motorola. But if I wanted to use a Linux MP3 player, watch a video etc there would be no sound. Kept getting a gstreamer error.
Hi g2tegg,

Try to reflash the webtop and then the mod again. There is a thread in the developers area I believe called webtop mod v1 or something like that. When I get the chance I will try to dig it up. Driving in a snowstorm at the moment slightly hinders my searchability haha. Good ol Ontario I tell ya
quick question: are these persistent? can I make a desktop icon for these or do I have to apt-get them everytime?
seems counter intuitive to not be able to "hard" install the applications

You dont have to apt-get everytime. The installed applications are on either the phones hard drive or the SD card. Only thing you will have to do is start the gnome panel every session, which is easy enough.

Yeah after tinkering with them for enough time I figured that out!
only question is how do I figure out where they are located on my phone? I can't find a DEBIAN folder anywhere on my device (sd or sd-ext) my webtopmod folder is on my internal storage btw
thanks for the response!
If you use webtopmod's debian chroot (the white shell) they'll be in the linuxdisk file, as it's actualy a filesystem in itself. You won't be able to 'directly' access them. I recommend switching to webtop2SD. I didnt' want to, but everything is native that way and most things run better anyways, I installed xfce4 and got rid of that stupid awn dock at the bottom and put in a little bar. Now it feels like linux!
My apps so far:
OpenOffice 3
XChat
rdesktop (doesn't work, keymap doesn't work)
gimp (not used yet)
Any other useful ones people know of? I don't need an email client... the phone's gmail app is sufficient enough, and if I need more support I'll just use gmail. Kind of wish I could get an updated firefox, or a tun/tap module so i could use hamachi.

I installed chromium, and it's running smoother than firefox ever did. Haven't really had a reason to install anything else, but i think i'm gonna get fxce4 because the current dock at the bottom annoys me

^yeah after using it exclusively for the past day or so it's quite capable but I can also see the limitations of debian through chroot. I'd ideally like to get rid of the webtop all together and just have kde or gnome (i'm not picky, xcfe4 would work for me too)
but I'm assuming if I do webtop2sd I can have ubuntu with gnome installed no problem?
I went through the process of putting all of my gnuSTEP icons on the webtop and it's very much like my current gnuSTEP machine (supremely capable btw when using a debian core) I haven't run into any real problems using the chroot method, save for not being able to put shortcuts on the AWN bar and the occasional, but when I get my lapdock in the mail and start exclusively using this when I'm out and about I'll look into doing webtop2sd. I need to get a bigger sd card too, I have a 16 but I'd rather have a 32 external only for webtop and the 10 or so internal for android I don't listen to music on my android (I own a zune) so 10 should be plenty to just have apps and android

Did you use the jaunty hack to get chromium working?
I successfully installed chromium but every page loads for a second and then crashes. I didn't really look into the chromium hack (I don't think I use jaunty for anything and synaptic/apt-get can get all the repositories I need) but it seemed intensive especially to get flash.
I've found that while firefox has FANTASTIC flash support (like, really good and speedy, no chops) I just end up using konqueror for regular internet tasks. I can't seem to get it to install flash (I don't know how to install .deb packages) but it's speedy for other things and makes an excellent file manager
If you could get chromium without 2.3.5 i'd get it... but 2.3.5 offers what appear to be no benefits at all, correct?
Just kinda scared to have to rebuild from a bricked phone.
Trolling from my ATRIX 4G's XDA premium app, still on the gold medal winner of worst customer satisfaction for the second year in a row! Congrats!
I upgraded to 2.3.5 it has the new firefox, it runs fine from what I've seen
I'm trying to install synaptic by "apt-get install synaptic", but it shows several "Failed to fetch http://ftp.debian.org/debian/......" messages.
How can I fix this?
I started on the wrong foot, but finally found that it likes Android 1.6 Apps!
- Angry Birds!!!!!! (with music and usable, albeit, it just takes a little time to Start just Once Initially, the everything is quite normalish after initial start..... But the initial Splash screen looks so cool on the smartwatch it is worth the wait).
- Dolphin Browser
- Opera Mini Browser
Hints:
- To download anything in Opera Mini, select the DCIM folder, it seems it does not like to download on initial root. Warning, it is not fast downloading.
- When typing remember that it is a good idea that when typing in the small keyboard, that if you are fast, and keep pressing a key and notice it was not the one you intended, before releasing the key, if you do it fast enough, you can move your finger towards the correct key before releasing your finger. This is much faster than having to delete a wrong entered letter. If you keep pressing and fail to move fast, it would suggest alternative based on the wrong letter and you can no longer move to next, but if you click elsewhere, it won't type the wrong letter.
- Dolphin Browser is great because you can define shortcuts for common menus (remember you don't have a menu key), with its gestures. I made a gesture for settings and other to go to downloads and for full screen!
More Apps come!!
Please Share your Apps!!!
More Apps!
- Aptoid works quite fine to install new apps.
- Backgammon Free
- Bazooka Rabbit works! (albeit, not all the screen appears, but it is playable).
- ES File Explorer
- .... more to try ...

I just recently got my imwatch and I'm already using the amazing side loader machine to load random apps onto it. I'll try to get a video going of it if I can but otherwise not many apps seem to work on it. If you can give me some ideas and a link to the apk to make things easier I will have more examples to show.

I'd be interested to see how some apps work compared to my Motoactv. So some examples would be emulators such as gbcoid, snesoid and n64oid. Maybe some android games such as Hill Climb, and Hardest Game Ever. Apps, I dunno, maybe root explorer (or just explorer), a browser (I use boat browser mini), and mxplayer playing a video would be cool to see. Everything but the emulators I just got off the Google Play store. If you can't access the store on the I'm Watch yet I remember being able to take apps off my phone. Just download the app on your phone, then use a file manager to browse to /data/app/, then send it to your computer (I use bluetooth). I can send you the emulator apk's, just PM me your e-mail.
Use bluestack make it easier to grab the apk and download multiple apps at the same time,
Games or apps compatible with android 1.6 will have a much better chance of working...
Good info
apps
Got some more apps that seem to work on the i'm watch after the 2.1.2 adb update
go jkeyboard works
mobicalc
advanced task killer
voice search kinda works, cant find netwrok connection. would like someone to get that working.
dropbox works
graffiti pro keyboard works
dolphin browser works
gesture search
but there arent many people who are rooting and or doing things for the watch,. So if you can give me any ideas as to what to do to it or how I'd appreciate it,. Such as unlocking the bootloader
What I'm finding is that anything where you can draw or speak is more useful for this watch.\
rooting with super on click was the best way of doing it honestly .
Ok so I found a useful group of apks that make customization something a greater thing.
email me @ [email protected]
for the link. (don't have enough posts for links)
Thanks!
There is a new ADB version out. The last was 2.1.2 but now there is a 2.2.0 which I am going to update to now and attempt to see if it changes much.
Heres hoping.

Well theres two ways to do it.
1. you can do the whole rooting process by getting the ADB software from imwatch and using super one click to root it then install it through a sideload manager.
2. you can download all the apks in there and go to the im market and get Sideload Manager app from there. Then you'd put the apks in the DCIM folder and go through the Sideload Manager and install it that way.
Note: You should disconnect from the pc when trying to install through sideload manager app for option two.

It's still pretty buggy. But from the things I've seen android phones have apps that are capable of handling and changing the volume and etc on there.
Don't quote me but its just what I've heard. I have an iPhone 5 so I can't really share from experience.
