[Q] Auto-Complete with keyboard - G2 and Desire Z General

Is there a way to turn on auto-complete with the hardware keyboard?

There may not be a way to do it with the stock Android keyboard but I know that both Better Keyboard and SwiftKey have that option. I prefer SwiftKey

It has a limited auto-complete in the sense that it will insert apostrophes and other punctuation as it's appropriate, but I don't recall that it will actually correct spelling or give you auto-complete functionality.

They were asking about the HARDWARE keyboard, not the stock android virtual keyboard.
I wish there was auto complete for the hardware keyboard too, but I haven't seen that option anywhere.

Swiftkey allows for the hardware keyboard to have prediction. Check out its description in the market.

I stand corrected. However, I must admit $4 to add autocorrect is a bit steep IMOH. The was a nice touch.

Yeah $4 is a bit steep I didn't realize it was that much! I got it for 99 cents a while ago. I guess they must have raised it since then.

I was just going to search for this. Looks like the swift KB is the way to go.
Oh well. Can't have it all I guess. Root will solve that problem.

Search for jonas's HTC IME mod on the forums. The high res version works with the G2 and has hardware kb word prediction.

I don't know why you would want the stock one when it doesn't even have multi-touch...
Just install smartkeyboard pro, it looks exactly like the stock keyboard but with multi touch, plus some other goodies.

thats probably why the stock android keyboard doesnt work. it doesnt support multi touch lol i never would have thought that.
s10shane I did that also and it force closed but its not because of the multitouch because the g2 has a multitouch chip and still runs it..

I may be missing something, but I believe my 4g already has the stock keyboard -- you just press and hold in any text input field, choose "Input Method", and select "Touch Input" -- that seems as close to a stock android keyboard as any I've seen.
I just installed it as well. I like the options it gives for customization but the prediction doesn't match htc's. At least not with changing the settings I have found.
I like sense's keyboard and how it shows the suggested words as I am typing. Skpro doesn't seem to have that option.
I'm willing to keep smart keyboard just because it wasn't that expensive but I may need longer to appreciate it.

[KEYBOARD] Stock Gingerbread Keyboard without smiley key

That damn smiley key was driving me insane, so I got the Gingerbread keyboard source from AOSP, got it to compile, and got rid of the smiley face button. Other than that, it's identical to the stock Android gingerbread keyboard, so requires 2.3+. Eventually I may figure out how to make it able to be turned on and off, but that would rather defeat the point. Enjoy!
(Note: you have to enable it in the Keyboard settings before you can use it, just like any other keyboard.)
The Eclipse project (source) is available here.
this sounds like a good thing for me because it also became annoying to me.
quick question though because i cant check out the keyboard mod yet, but does it remove the smiley key completely, or does it replace it with an enter key or something?
soon as i get the chance, ill install and see for myself
Nice. I like that it has been replaced with the enter key instead. I find that to be immensely more useful.
I replaced it with the significantly-more-useful return key.

The smiley key doesn't annoy me per se, but the fact that the Enter key was removed does. So now, it is impossible to have any semblance of formatting in your SMS'es.
Will definitely give this a go as soon as possible. This is definitely a must have as far as I am concerned.
Thanks, but i've a problem with your keyboard.
I turned on the vibrate on keyboard settings, but there is no vibration when I push a key.

It's probably because you've packaged up the WVGA keyboard file, and not the qHD version. The Sensation sports a higher res screen.

That would make sense, but I don't see why the same keyboard wouldn't work on all devices. I mean, looking at the code, I see nothing that would prevent scaling. I was never asked for a target screen size to compile for, nor do I see any way to enter it. If someone could explain a way to fix it, I would gladly rerelease a qHD-compatible version.

You should try and work it out that Long Press of the return key let's you select smileys. It's one of my favorite features of Perfect Keyboard. But non the less, good job.

[Q]Better than Swype?

I just want to know is there any keyboard which is better than Swype in matter of recognition and word deletion/correction?
ICS keyboard is the best one I've seen so far for android, as I'm a really fast typer coming from IOS (vest keyboard over all), I installed ICS keyboard from the play store and set the auto correct to aggressive so as I type every few words my eyes just look to the screen to see if the keyboard auto correct wrong any words then I correct it manually or just continue talking.
PS. ALWAYS READ WHAT YOU TYPE BEFORE HITTING THAT ENTER BUTTON, BECAUSE WHEN YOU DON'T, WE GOT SITES LIKE DAMNYOUAUTOCORRECT.COM.

Swiftkey 3 has the best word prediction and correction that I've seen.
But the current Swype beta is close to it.
Both will get better the longer you use them
I can enter in text faster using Swype beta than Swiftkey.
Even faster again if I use the S Pen.

Swift key is one of the best in terms of prediction. But sometimes I find it a bit laggy.
I'd liked Swift Key 3 but it does not support swyping input on keyboard guys.
I liked the way it recognizes and corrects words.
I used to love Ultra Keyboard...but it doesn't work properly now on ICS....gets force closes...
I prefer Swiftkey 3. My flatmate prefers swype.
Pretty much everyone I know uses either swiftkey or swype.
new swype beta also has word prediction.
I have found that the standard ICS keyboard is best primarily, in addition to it being very accurate, It allows for speech recognition where you do not have to speak all at once- you can take breaks between words without any problem, whereas swype does not. Be sure to enble personalized recognition in settings as it does not do this manually. IT MAKES A HUGE DIFFERENCE AND I DONT EVEN HAVE A WEIRD ACCENT.

Any idea why it doesn't even work with an international ROM?

I agree. But hey to each his own right.
The Samsung keyboard, even though it's a version of SwiftKey, is crippled without autocorrect so I just use the normal SwiftKey which is amazingly awesome. I thought I really wanted the always-there number row on the Samsung keyboard, but adjusting the key hold duration to ~200ms on SwiftKey makes inserting numbers nearly as good while taking up less screen space.

That is a great suggestion for the SwiftKey keyboard. I have multiple keyboards loaded and find myself constantly switching back and forth. Different KBs have their pros and cons. I like the number key on the Samsung KB, but missing AC is not so nice.
Reducing the key hold duration per your suggestion makes SwiftKey much more usable for me. It's now back to my default KB.
Heh. The KBs I have on my GS4 are:
A.I. type KB free
AnySoftKB
Kii KB
MessageEase KB (never really got into this one)
Swype
Samsung (OEM)
Google voice (OEM)
TouchPal KB

If you are the person who is a tap to type and swipes occasionally, then Swift Key hands down or TouchPal X which has been recently updated and is now a contender
If you prefer to swype and have the most forgiving swype experience, then I would go swype & dragon all the way.
FYI.... I've bought them all and tried all them. Ultra Keyboard, Swype, Swiftkey, Kii Keyboard, TouchPal, SlideIt, google keyboard, Etc.
Good luck
Just wish swift key had a dedicated number row.
Touchpal FTW
sent from state where marijuana is NOT illegal ! now Free
tried all, for swiping, swype reigns
I never tap to text anymore and have been using the swipe method for texting and typing on my smartphone for sometime now, and I have tried all the major and most minor keyboards out there including buying the paid version of several. After testing and comparing them all, and still doing so, my opinion is swype is still the best keyboard for swipers. it intergrates everything better and just works. It's by far the most accurate and easy to edit if it does get it wrong. Though the others are good keyboards, for me, I always lose functionality when I don't use swype.
I keep trying the others though.
Currently using Google keyboard, free and it works well, will try swype keyboard and a couple of others..
I personally prefer Swype, I like the way you can copy and paste with just gestures. Swiftkey is not bad I suppose, however it does not support Chinese input which I use on a daily basis.

Stock Google one or swiftkey are the ones I fall back to
I have to say the Google Keyboard is my favourite.
I used to use Swype back in the day, but when Google brought out their swipe keyboard, I found it much more friendly. I recently tried the Swiftkey swipe keyboard, which I like to some degree, but the one drawback is when it incorrectly guesses the word you swiped, you have to hit the backspace, then it only gives you 3 options, none of which ever seem to be the correct word. I prefer the feature of the Google keyboard where you can long press on the central word it suggests and then it gives you a grid of like 20 words it thinks you typed. That is the best feature for me.
I really like the stock Google keyboard.
TouchPal X is the best no doubt.
