[Q] Is anyone having problems with Google Sky after the JI6 Update? - Vibrant General

After updating to the latest Samsung firmware, JI6, I noticed several things. On the positive side, the GPS and the Compass both perform better than the original JFD firmware.
On the negative side, I noticed that Google Sky is showing up approximately 180 degrees out of phase. (Best to think of this orientation problem as the need to look through the back case of your phone rather than look at the screen). I noticed this problem because, last *night*, Google Sky indicated that the sun was above my head, when it should have been on the other side of the planet.
I elected to apply the JI2 GPS patch to see if that might help with this problem (because I didn't have this problem with JFD). As expected my GPS and Compass continued to perform better than with JFD. And, the good news is that this fixed the Google Sky orientation problem!
Just curious to know if anyone else is having this problem with JI6.

Did you have any problems applying the ji2 fix over the official ji6 ota update?

@jstein222, I didn't have any problems applying the JI2 patch on top of JI6. That said, I backed up everything first just in case it didn't take.

cool, i'm going to give that a try my gps actually worked with the ji2 fix and gets absolutely no locks with the new ji6.

I noticed that even with the JI2 patch applied to the JI6 build that I sometimes also have trouble getting locks. I think there is some RFI going on between the different radio components in the Vibrant.
I've found that if I turn off WiFi before using the GPS, I get locks much, much faster.

I checked the Google Night Sky app since you asked and I'm having the same issue. It's not a deal breaker for me, but I'm going to play with the stock JI6 for a few days more before I install the JI2 files. Maybe Google will release an update in that time.....maybe.

Calibrate the compass using the figure 8 motion. I had the same issue after the update until I calibrated the compass. Now works fine.

Had to do this for regular Maps as well, not just for Sky Maps.

@inverseflux & avogl, Thanks for the calibration idea. I tried to calibrate using a Compass tool from the Marketplace. It seems as if my compass is actually working fine in both JI6 and JI2... That's to say that it points N/S/E/W regardless of how I'm tilting the phone. That is a far improvement over JFD. And when it points N in JI6 it also points N with the JI2 GPS mod.
In JI6, it seems as if things are 180 degrees out of phase vis-a-vis the front-to-back orientation of the phone. In JI2, this problem didn't occur.
It is possible that I haven't properly calibrated, so is there a specific tool you can recommend?

[Q] Does JI6 OTA update fix the GPS and Compass?

Hey XDA community,
I have been reading a lot of positive things about JI6 and that the GPS is finally fixed. I am kind of a sceptic because I have been reading for a while that compass is seriously messed up on all Galaxy S phones and that it may actually be a hardware issue that can't be fixed with software. I have read that people are getting locks to satellites and that it locks quickly, but has anyone tested the compass to see if that has been addressed also?
If anyone has tested this on JI6 can you tell us how well the compass is working with the GPS and also how the accuracy seems after updating?

The compass was perfect in the JI5 release, so it's not a hardware problem. I'm running the leaked JI6 and the compass is ok, but not as good as it was in JI5. I'm going to flash the official JI6 tonight...hopefully it'll be good again.

Compass is prefect on official ji6. Gps is as good as from ji2 on which is not perfect but reliable...
GPS is working great. If it's bugging out disable Wireless Networks and make sure all of the settings under LbsTestMode are stock.. they do carry over if you update.
I can open up maps and expect a fix. Compass is working.. it has been changed for the better since JI2. It's not a "hardware" issue.

I can't open LBStestmode anymore with this new update, i think my settings are still screwed up from last time when i was messing with it.
The new code is *#3214789650#. The settings are exactly the same as JFD, Spirent, Standalone, etc.
You might want to delete GPS data, disable WiFi and wait for your first fix.
My GPS has always worked pretty good and on JI6 it seems even better but I haven't had a chance to do a lot of testing. My compass so far is finally working. It wasn't working too well at first but it started working great after calibrating it.

My settings are different now. My server shows:
h-slp.mnc260.mcc310.pub.3gpp
and I'm now MS-Based.
Are you sure you didn't change them prior? I flashed from a complete wipe and they are most definitely not like that.
GPS definitely works much better after the OTA update. However, i'm still curious as how it holds up to other smartphones. I created a thread for people who have another smartphone to compare JI6 GPS to other smartphone GPS performance.

my odin update went smoothly. the gps is perfect now, but the compass still has a few issues. seems like i have to calibrate it every time i use it. after that its ok, usable, but not perfect.

I just noticed that myself. It's like it doesn't want to save or keep the calibration setting.
I'm trying to upload a video showing how fast I get my lock over WiFi or the GSM network but Youtube keeps speeding it up. Coming soon..
I flashed the "OTA" JI6 recently to avoid any problems. The file sizes are exactly the same. The GPS performs the same.
Can someone post the stock settings?
Like I said above, they're the same as they always have been. Standalone, Accuracy @ 50, www.spirent-lcs.com 7575..

Compass and GPS perfect for me after the update (used ODIN, didn't feel like waiting).

That's the weird part. I did play around with settings; after the Captivate OTA I managed to get those guys to post their GPS settings and I applied them to my Vibrant. Here's the server they gave me:
- h-slp.mnc410.mcc310.pub.3gpp
I tried it and it didn't work so I thought (not quite sure) I had gone back to spirent.
But my auto config settings after JI6 is definitely
h-slp.mnc260.mcc310.pub.3gpp
Not quite the same, and I didn't input that string, so it came with the update.
Now, I tried inputting spirent-lcs and also did a toggling of Standalone vs. MS-Based... no significant difference in GPS performance. I did think that I was able to get lock quicker on Standalone when Wifi was on, but I'll have to test that out more.
Regardless, I can use spirent or the mnc260 server and performance is the same. The GPS fix is definitely not in any user settings.
Thanks for all of the replies everyone.
I finally got tired of waiting for the OTA and I flashed JI6.
In my experiences the GPS does perform better than stock but it definitely doesn't seem 100% fixed. If I am stationary and I use the GPS Test app I have about 11 satellites in view and I would consistently be locked to 7-10 of the 11. This is an improvement from my stock GPS especially for the amount of time it takes for the GPS to lock
I took the GPS for a drive though and the accuracy seemed bad. The GPS seemed to lag about 30 feet behind my actual location. Halfway through my drive (it was only a 10 min drive) my GPS completely lost me when I made a turn and then navigator froze until I locked the screen and then unlocked it.
Before upgrading to JI6 I reset GPS data, rolled back to full stock except root, and did a factory reset under the privacy settings.
Is anyone else having accuracy issues and problems with the GPS losing its lock while driving around or is it just my phone?
I will test it more and report back.
JI6 Problems
The GPS locks good sometimes but then it is terrible most of the time. Signal drops still occur & I was going down a street (Google Maps) & the video had me visually going the opposite way.

JI6 GPS still has major issues

Got excited after updating to JI6 this afternoon and the GPS locked on with 10 seconds, however tonight I went on a drive and the GPS wouldn't lock on after minutes. Finally gave up and rebooted which resolved the problem.
I'm also seeing some issues with the GPS being off by 100's of feet which is causing maps to reroute. Seems like mainly when stopped at a signal light.
Hopefully rebooting solved the first issue, but I not happy that there is still problems with GPS after waiting 2 months for a fix
Also the LAG seems worse. LAG needs to be the next top priority
That's a drag man, sorry to hear that. Maybe consider installing a custom ROM? I'm running Bionix 1.4, no lagfix because I'm getting zero lag. Rooting and flashing was very quick and my phone is now very responsive.
GPS is still hit or miss, but it's mostly hit and overall is working much better.
To be honest flashing this ROM has improved my phone ten fold.
Maybe give it a try. Just a thought, and sorry again to hear about your issues.
fix: flash (clockwork) "Vibrant-JI2-GPS.zip"
ji6 gps BLOWSSSSS
enter *#3214789650# and switch to MSmode, This solved the accuracy problem for me on JI6.
I don't know why samsung insists on seting Standalone mode for the GPS, Swiching to MSmode was the first thing we did to fix the GPS months ago.

Very strange. My phone is significantly faster, even better than before with OCLF. No stuttering at all.
Bionix 1.7 is the answer to your woes
Did you **** with any of the GPS settings prior to updating?
My GPS is working great, tracking, navigation and all. Lag? What lag?
Also, why did you think this topic deserved another thread? We already have one on this topic.. thanks.
Is anyone seeing their GPS just start wondering off? I'll be setting perfectly still and the GPS will start jumping in one direction by 100+ yards each time and it'll keep going, like yesterday I ended up over 200 miles away from where I actually was. Oh and instead of being on the street it has me in parking lots and fields. Not seeing the fix on my end.
It's working like a charm for me after JI6 !!!
GPS is fine for me and even better after enabling agps
For some reason agps is disabled by default.
Can you guys tell me your exact settings on the LbsTestMode? Not just the usual ms-mode/ supl.google.com/ 7276.. I need to know all the settings you have cos I messed with mine and want it back to stock
No problem here
I must be lucky, I am using Frankin Twiz final and a simple fix and i have 5-7 sats locks and 10-15 m accuracy. From all the reading...... depending on how you customized your phone, it seems to me that you have to customize the gps fix as well, as I see no absolute fix by anyone that works for all.
GPS
I got the update. The GPS worked for awhile but now it doesn't lock in. What's the best way to solve the problem?
Yes I have the same issue. I also noticed that when at a stoplight the gps will drift which causes maps to recaculate routes.

I don't see the USB icon after pluggning the cable. Anyone seeing this issue?
Preface: I was rooted with lagfix using OCLF. Prior to the OTA, I unrooted & uninstalled lagfix. My phone got locked up in Vibrant/Samsung screen during the OTA installtion like many others.
I used Odin to return the phone to stock, then download & flashed the JI6 file using Odin. GPS, compass, Task Manager, HD Camcorder, Youtube HD, Media Hub, etc are working fine ... however, no USB icon.
Has anyone else still not received this update?
People put your phone into fight mode and see how accurate GPS is after
Mine works perfectly, I am digging this update specially the new task manager. I can't wait for froyo.

How To: Froyo Compass fix

Credit to: abrognlie for pointing this out here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=11552644&postcount=163
Figured this would be easier to find in searchs.
Problem: Your compass is backwards and overly erractic and inaccurate.
Solution: Upside down horizontal calibration
How: Plant the phone on a flat surface upside down. A low ceiling, top of a door frame etc. Make sure it's flat and facing upside down. Go to: Settings, Display, Horizontal calibration and calibrate it upside down.
Bingo bango, your broken compass should be fixed. This also cures slow auto rotation
Just tried that. Still as erratic and jumpy as ever.

Hardware problem?
The first time I used Google Maps with EB13 it told me that the compass needed to be calibrated and to move the phone several times in a figure 8 manner. I did it, and the compass has been fine. I'd never seen that before. I hadn't used the compass at all before this, so I don't know if it "fixed" a problem or if I just didn't have a problem, but I thought I'd throw it out there for people who are having problems.

Same for me but it was still broken. X-Plane was unplayable, auto rotation was slow and sometimes unresponsive because the compass was backwards and jumping direction erratically. (download a compass app and check yours) North was south, etc.
The upside down trick 100% cured the issue. Not the figure 8 or the right side up calibration.
*shrug*
Wow! Best find ever! The upsides down calibration worked for my slow gsensor lanscape bug! All this time, rooted was needed for the
"system/bin/sensorcalibutil_yamaha" code to work! Very nice!
I wish I could claim credit for this (the member who deserves all the credit is styles420), and I wish it worked for everyone, but someone found this back when DK28 first leaked. It seems to help with a group of us with sensor data that gets mapped backwards during the flash. It shows up in the compass or google sky maps, but it seems to be a problem with the g-sensors that affects how the compass works.

try downloading GPS Status from the market. Open it and do the calibration tools. Should fix this. Also may improve your GPS (if it isn't doing well)
Possible, but it was the same on my previous epic. I haven't put too much effort into it since I don't really need a compass very often, but it would be nice to have it work for once.

I already have GPS Status. I did that calibration from that again, and it is still messed up. It jumps a little less, but I can turn the phone 90 degrees and the compass rotates 180. Then I turn the compass 90 degrees the same direction, and the compass jumps backwards 90 degrees. I'm having a really hard time figuring out a reason for the pattern. I might have to sit down and draw some compass diagrams.
Worked for me. Fixed slow auto rotate as well

Another issue, maybe?
I wonder if there might be an underlying issue here...
Was doing some research on why my battery life is garbage after EB13.
I hit on this thread because it looks like the compass sensor is consuming a ridiculous amount of CPU... I mean, foregrounded using 7% CPU when nothing else is going on.. like, no compass app or maps being used.
With my Epic pretty much quiescent, top consistently reports it (/system/bin/sensorserver_yamaha) as the highest user. Under DI18, it never even cracked the top ten.
Samsung Epic (EB13 Official) + Clockwork
wow thanks for the tip! i almost returned my epic because of this.
Amazing... how you found this out is beyond me, but it works!

[Q] GPS reset utility?

Does anyone know of a utility to reset the internal GPS completely?
I use location-based tools all the time, and this annoying GPS failure in EC05 is a real PITA.
I know some folks have had some luck doing a "cold start" using the GPS Status utility, but this has not worked for me.
Symptoms are that the GPS works fine for a while, then loses lock. Going into GPS status reveals no satellites visible at all, and the GPS icon on the notification bar is gone..
Using Menu/Tools/Manage A-GPS state I have tried both reseting the state (cold start) and downloading assistance data. Turning the GPS off and on again also does nothing. OTOH, if I simply reboot the phone, the GPS comes back right away.
Many have reported this issue was fixed in EB13, but came back in EC05. I'm running SRF 1.1 right now, but I also had this problem in the stock EC05 that I received OTA.
Having the GPS just work properly all the time would be ideal. But short of that, being able to restart it from scratch without having to reboot the phone would be an acceptable workaround. Even a command-line utility would be better than nothing.
-Sean
It's aggravating... I have the issue and I too am waiting for some kind of fix/workaround.
I use my GPS at my evening job pretty extensively. I suffered from this issue on DI18 ROMs daily, but I haven't experienced it yet since the dk17 froyo beta.
Exact same problems here. I am on Bonsai 4 but have also had the same problem with all the other EC05 roms I've flashed and the stock EC05. It was fantastic while it was working in EB13.

It came back in ec05 because people didn't use the fixes we used in going from di18 > dk28 > eb13. Search these threads and do what we did and you won't have the problem either.

I was on whatever the stock Eclair release was out of the box -- bought the phone literally the day after Sprint suspended the EB13 OTA rollout.
I got EC05 pushed to me OTA a month later. GPS had the same issue on Eclair and EC05.
To get from the OTA EC05 to SRF I had to Odin back to EB13, but I only had EB13 on the phone for a few minutes -- did not test the GPS behavior.

I've tried a few things.. but at present, I went back to stock Eclair through Odin, then took the OTA to EC05.
Basically, I installed clean, so it's a mystery to me why others don't have this. Actually I think quite a few do, but haven't realized it yet... because the first time you get a fix after boot, it works magnificently well... 3-10 seconds. Great.
It's the down time after that, the hours that pass after that first fix that seems to change things. Without doing anything specific, just using the browser and other things.. the ability to AGAIN get a fix is hindered. Sometimes the GPS doesn't get one at all.
I'll let all the smart guys work on this one. I'm just a competent end user with no real knowledge of how the GPS works.
Just wanted to chime in..
I was waiting for someone to bring up this issue. Symptoms identical to OP's. Stock eclair worked perfectly, and this problem appeared in eb13, after a manual update. Ec05 did not change a thing and Gps status cold start did not help either.
This sucks since I use gps all the time.

As I noted above, I'm not a real gifted technician.. but I'm guessing this issue has something to do with the internal compass. I noticed that my two co-workers who both bought the Epic based on their favorable impressions of my phone, had issues with screen rotation after going from stock Eclair to EC05. Neither are advanced users. Neither rooted or otherwise messed with their phones. I too have tinkered with the compass.. the upside-down calibration and the terminal command pertaining to Yamaha.
I can effect the quality and time of the fix by waving the phone in a figure eight pattern in an attempt to calibrate.. so I'm thinking it's all related.
Running SFR 1.1.0 and I haven't experienced this yet. Took a three hour walk yesterday and CardioTrainer locked me the entire time even through the trails.
How long does it usually take for GPS to lose lock?
If it matters, I only enable GPS, not network-based location.

On DI18 based ROM's, the GPS data cache would not flush itself properly and you would lose GPS functionality usually within hours after it seemed to be working fine. My evening job I work as a delivery driver, and I would have to reboot my phone a couple times a night because of this bug. But as I stated earlier in this thread, I have not experienced this bug since dk17. I did experience some issues in DK28 where the GPS signal would drop out for a few seconds here and there, but since EB13, it's been perfect. No issues. My other Epic is stock EC05, so I will run some tests with that one tonight to see if I can get it to foul up.
So is anyone running Bonsai 4 experiencing this problem at all?
My understanding is that Bonsai uses an EB13-based kernel with only select EC05 elements, so perhaps it is not prone to this issue. If that's the case, that may be enough to make me switch to Bonsai from SRF.
It would also appear that the problem is not universal across all EC05 (and EC05-based ROM) users, as there have been several reports in this and other threads from people with no GPS problems at all. This makes me wonder, among other things, whether or not some specific app or module is either causing (or clearing?) the problem. Since lots of folks on stock OTA have the issue, that would likely be an OEM app.
This problem is a real PITA for me as I use the GPS all the time. Really, really want to find a solution.

If you just want to reset your GPS cache data, there is an onboard utility invoked by a dialer code. Open your phone dialer and punch in
##GPSCLRX#
That opens a dialog that requires you to key in the MSL code for your phone. Normally the Sprint support desk has to give this to you. (If they do, write it down for future use.) There are other methods to find the MSL, including this one.

##GPSCLRX#
That opens a dialog that requires you to key in the MSL code for your phone. Normally the Sprint support desk has to give this to you.

Thanks, I have the MSL. I've also now placed a shortcut on the home screen directly to this utility, which actually bypasses the MSL. From Launcher Pro, long press on a blank area then select Shortcuts/Activities/com.android.hiddenmenu/GPSCLRX.
We'll see if using this GPSCLRX utility brings the GPS back to life next time it locks up.
While I am on the hiddenmenu subject, does anyone know which module is the GPSsetup utility? Supposedly this ships with the phone, and was previously (pre-Froyo) invoked with the dialer code *#1472365# but, according to threads on some other Galaxy-S forums, Samsung changed the code due to customer abuse. The alleged replacement code does not work for me, and I've tried all the obvious modules in hiddenmenu with no success.
In the interim, I've flashed LBSTestMode, which seems to work fine for reading and testing the GPS chipset, but is purportedly for a different chipset and so it is not clear if it can actually change settings (see androidforums.com/samsung-epic-4g/308885-gps-aquistion-ec05.html).

Does nothing show up in LauncherPro with a name like GPSSetup or GPSsetup?

Thanks for that data point, but I was really asking about stock Bonsai, since if I switch, that's where I'd go.

As of last night, that version is now stock Bonsai.

I could not find anything. The only Activity I saw with GPS in the name was the aforementioned GPSCLRX. However I should note that I am on SRF 1.1.0, and it is possible that K0nane removed this module from the ROM. Does anyone know if it is in the stock EC05 build? Also, what's the .apk named, so I can try to find it and load it?

compass and gps on 2.3.4 (9020)

i'm finding it's crazy again. 2.3.3 seemed to tack it down, but it seems worse than 2.3.2, and the gps seems a lot slower too.
i haven't been out yet and properly tested it, but has anyone tested it yet?
2.3.4 actually seemed to fix the compass for me, it seems a lot more accurate now.
GPS works well too but I didnt have a problem with GPS on 2.3.3.
if i lie the phone flat the compass will say one direction, if i pick it up, so it's perp to the horizon, it says a different direction. the compass in 2.3.2 went crazy in one particular angle, gittering back and forth, same now
GPS fixed for me as well. I get a fix in five seconds
Compass is less jumpy
2.3.4 no fix gps for my i9023
any 1 got solution?
i am from malaysia
and i hope no need root to fix it

Isn't a compass supposed to be held horizontal to the ground?
Anyways, it's best to wave your phone in a figure 8 pattern from time to time if your compass is spazzing out. This will get rid of any abnormal magnetic fields in the phone.
