i decided to find out what the hullabaloo about Beautiful Widgets was and bought it... and then tried their fanciful widgets and weather and stuff. Not sure if I get the deal, (I look at the sky to find out the weather and I dont need more reminders of what time it is) but anyway -- last night I got into some settings in BW and then remember something about "reboot to disable home button" or whatever and I forgot I was not rooted, so I went ahead with it. (Had i been rooted I would have done a data wipe and restore and not needed to make another XDA thread)
But now I cannot use my home button. It goes nowhere. It vibrates but thats it. Doesnt go "Home" and long press doesnt give me my last 6 apps.
I uninstalled BW (both the apk and whatever the widgets were) so now I have no more BW on the phone, and it somehow even reset my system settings so I had to set that all up over again!!!!
I had Launcherpro apk and Zeam and have uninstalled both of those and now I only have ADW launcher. I set the ADW settings to enable the home button to go to "default screen" but now it doesnt do anything.
I havent been able to use home button normally since that Beautiful Widget setting thing last night.
My next step is to go into fastboot and do a data-wipe (the stock settings for data reset doesnt really come close to what a fastboot data wipe does, I think) but then Ill have to deal with restoring a non-rooted phone and not looking forward to that without my beloved Titanium Backup.
So anyone know Beautiful Widgets inside out who can let me know how to get my home button back to normal. Otherwise its a hardware issue and I doubt it because ive been treating this phone like its the queen of england, delicate and carefully.
Im positive this was caused by a Beautiful Widget setting change...
solved
I tried everything possible.... and got so pissed about the home button not working that I did a factory reset off the SPL. That fixed it -- my home button now works.
So something in the Beautiful Widgets settings caused something to become embedded and it made my home button useless. Im 99.9% sure of that -- .01% would go towards "hardware malfunction".
careful in those BW settings. nice widgets, but horrible batt-drain. Too Sense-i for me.
Did you try resetting the default app settings for Beautiful Widgets or the built-in launcher? Menu -> Applications -> Beautiful Widgets -> Reset Defaults.

I was reseting my Epic and was presented with a surprise dialog box that allowed me to choose the non-TouchWiz home screen. It was one of those "what do you want to use to complete this action" type prompts. I don't really know what I did to get it because it doesn't happen normally. It was either that I was touching one of the soft buttons at the right time or that I unlocked the home-screen as soon as I possibly could.
I ended up with three home-screens and the pullout application drawer. Also when I touch and held on the home-screen, the Samsung widgets were not available.
I just thought I'd share.
Did you install LauncerPro or something similar? That's exactly what happens when you install a new launcher frontend and the Epic doesn't have a default home-screen.
Samsung widgets are not available on LauncherPro, but there are comparable/better ones available on the market, too.
Yea. Phone comes with just a" home". Go to settings, applications, manage applications and find twlauncher. Select clear defaults. Hit the home button and then u can select the basic launcher.

@nmezib - nope, I just did a factory reset so there was nothing nonstandard installed.
@sultan - That's it, very cool.
What your seeing there is the stock Android launcher. This is what ADW is based on. You can go and clear the cache of TouchWiz in Appmanager and it will prompt you with that dialog again.
Not sure why, but when I turned my streak (1.6, no hacks/updates), once it boots, I could before depress the off/on button for a split second, and the screen would go to sleep. Now, it won't. If I hold the off/on button, the menu pops up like normal to power it off. Tried removing the battery.
Short of a blow it out reset, anyone know what I can do to make it go to sleep when I tap the off/on button?
this happend to me with a build of analog clock v2
in case you have installed a clock modification or docking application , this is probably it.
Weird...I haven't installed any docks, or clocks.
I guess I'll just go through the apps one by one, installing them and see what happens?
I don't have that many installed.
Screen off (just installed so I could turn off the screen)
Z4 root (but hasn't been run)
Google sky map
Speedtest
Epocrates
Google Maps
Facebook for Android
Radar Now
Watchdog task manager lite (not running full time?)
Dell Backup & restore
Fandango Movies
Skyfire Browser
Advanced Lock (worked ok for a week before the pwr button issue)
Astro file manager
compass
Xda-Developers
AT&T mark the spot
Google Googles
Shop Savvy barcode scanner
Photobucket Moble
Weather bug (lite)
Get ES File manager. It's way better than Astro.

Tried taking out advance lock, the watchdog thingy, and a few other
apps, rebooted, still no joy.
Oh well...I'm sure a wipe will fix it...at least I can use the widget I installed
to turn off the screen, which I guess in a way is probably better, since I
won't be hitting the on/off button as much
This happened to me after I did the EM unlock and explored the options. Came out of it and power button wont go to sleep anymore. Thought I might have changed a setting, but can't find it. Peace
I think mine did that too come to think of it.
I picked this up on sale the other day. I like it but when I press the home button it takes be back to the default launcher screen, can't figure out how to fix that (I have used open home to make it default).

From there you can pick what you want the home button to do...hope this helps man..
Tried that but its not sticking... hmm thanks anyways
Ok now I see the problem. Using home switcher when selecting my default home app it is not keeping the adw launcher. For some reason it is reverting back to the stock android launcher.
Fix its, just cleared everything in manage apps...
A problem i have
I just installed ADW launcher on my tab and for whatever reason the damn "menu" icon won't go away on my homescreen. Its right next to the multitask button and it refuses to go away. I have seen many people who use adw not have this problem any ideas?

When you first installed adw and pushed the home button for the first time, you should have been given an option (pop up menu) to either go to the stock launcher or adw, and under those two options theres a checkbox to make it your default choice. You may have accidently checked it and went to the stock launcher.
I'd try going into settings/applications/all and find the stock launcher and if you select it than there should be an option to clear defaults for that app.

I know the last few updates for adw has had some issues so I'm not sure if this is one that people are complaining about.
But what I did was create a shortcut to show/hide the action bar.
Just long press the screen, than go to launcher actions and select hide/show action bar. I also replaced the icon with a transparent png so it's invisible on my screen.

I see what youre saying.
This must be something they added with the latest updates, but I can see why they did. If you use adw on a phone pressing the menu button brings up options for the launcher. These options are customizable by the way and actually come in handy. So maybe their just trying to make it more uniform to phone versions.
But I dont think theres any way you could get rid of it, adw is calling for the os to display the button, so unless theres a setting with in the app or unless you edit the apk youre stuck with it lol. The older versions like the one Im running now dont have this, so thats why you didnt see other users with the issue.

Thank you! ill make sure I "legally" obtain this version to try out!
Solution.
I have been using ADW Launcher EX version 1.3.3.55 and I think this solution will work with other/older versions as well.
Search the Market for: Home Manager. Once you install and run this app it will give you the option to clear default then select the the default home you want. I've been using this myself and can assure you it works. I suppose it enables a service that ensures the default home settings 'stick'. Anyway once you're done and it works then you can disable the the status/notification bar option in the app as it doesn't need them running to function properly. Happy Home Skinning!
After rooting my VS980 (using the ioroot method), every time I reboot my device I loose the stock launcher. It will boot directly into Nova Launcher with no option for a different home. A quick check with root explorer shows both LGHome files present in /system/app with the proper permissions. Does anyone have a clue why this would happen?
History... before achieving root I copied over both LGHome.apk and LGHome.odex files to my /sd to have for later modding purposes using Solid Explorer. This is the only thing I can think of that would cause the issue. The only way to get the stock launcher back after each boot is to copy over the LGHome files from my /sd back to /system/app and overwrite the ones in place. Then after hitting home on the Nav bar it will ask which launcher to use and I the option to choose "Home" or Nova.
If anyone can shed some light on this for me I would appreciate it. It is getting to be a nuisance copying files over at each boot... Thanks!!
Hi,
Maybe this: first go to settings/Nova Launcher and Clear defaults. When you choose the launcher (Home button) you want, a pop up will appear asking you the default action (I mean Nova or stock launcher), don't choose "always" for Nova...
So at boot (and when pressing the Home button) you'll have the choice for the stock launcher or Nova (but not very convenient each time you press the Home button)...

I have never used Nova as the default launcher on my G2, only tried it out since it was my go-to on the GNex. I always have Nova cleared out and "Home" selected as my default launcher. I've even tried going into Nova's app settings and clearing all data and cache (no defaults were set). On reboot Nova would still load as my only option. I've thought about uninstalling Nova then rebooting to see what would happen... but I'm a little scared that I would have no interface with the UI. I do have a CWM backup though. Thanks for the reply.
Settings, application manager, menu, reset app preferences. You will have to reconfigure all defaults and disabled after.

No dice, already tried that. Thanks though.
Maybe I'm not being clear with explaining the issue. It's not about "how to" set a different default launcher, it's that the stock launcher is GONE on reboot. Like not accessible at all. The only way to get it back is to replace the LGHome apk and odex in /system/app ...per boot. But of course I loose data every time I have to do this.

This is so odd. I've never experienced anything like this in 3 yrs of rooting and modding android.

Damn weird. How though?... I.... don't understand. Some app not being very friendly? Mind blown.

Agreed. This doesn't make any since to me... Depending on how many beers I have during the MNF game tonight I may just chance it and install Nova, reboot and see what happens. I guess I could always unroot and see if that fixes it too...
Thanks guys for the suggestions but something not obvious is working at boot to mess with Home. I'll try hooking it up to adb later and watch the output to see if I can see something weird going on at boot

Has anyone loaded another launcher and enabled Ultra Power Save mode? I've loaded Google Now Launcher and when I enable and switch back, all my icons are gone from the home screen except email. Basically have to set everything back up again. Anyone seen this or have a resolution? Maybe I just have to switch back to TouchWiz if I ever want to enable it?
I have no problems using it with Next Launcher 3D.
That happened to me too as soon as I returned from Power Savings mode. All icons gone except a few like you said.
It works with other launchers but the Google Now Launcher.
Any ideas on how to fix it?
Just to know:
when y enable saving battery or ultra saving
the whole performance of phone decrease.
as responsive on callings
i told you cauze i forgot this morning that i switched on saving battery and calling responsive was awful
Had the same issues. I cannot use the power savings mode without having to add all widgets and shortcuts to my home screen. I even created screenshots of how they look like in case power savings is activated.
Any ideas on how to solve it?
i dont have any issue, try factory reset..maybe resolve yours prob?
Same issue for me. Googled the issue to find this thread, hoping for an answer. Sounds like a bug in Google launcher on galaxy tab S.
More research show problems with Google launcher on Samsung S5 as well using ultra power save mode. But Google launcher not "officially" supported on S5. Not sure if it is supported on Tab S...
2 years later and 3 phones laterl.. same issue
Bump in hopes someone has found a fix. Having the same issue with my galaxy on5, and it keeps deleting my themes. This is through the phone's theme setting no less
This fixed my s6

Go into Settings>Application Manager>Disabled Apps
Touch the "dot dot dot" at the top right and a drop down appears saying "Sort by size" and "Reset app preferences"
Touch "Reset app preferences" and it resets everything to default preferences.
It seems to have fixed my problem. It did not restore the apps on my home page to where I had them but that just means adding them from my apps menu again. I can use my apps as before and now I can update, install, and uninstall with Google Play again.
