In an effort to clear up every other thread that you are all ruining with stupid unrelated to roms or kernel BLN questions I have created a magical thread for you all to use instead.
So if you have any BLN questions or issues or advice to give then put it here not in other threads!
Thanks
What is BLN?
BLN stands for Back Light Notifications
Why do we need it?
Well if you are prudent enough you will have noticed that unlike the majority of android phones, Samsung don't see a need to have a LED on the phone to flash to warn you that you have a notification. So some bright spark invtented a way to enable the menu and back keys to flash when you get a notification.
How do I use it?
You need 3 things:
- Modified Liblights.so (this might come in a rom or kernel, it might not)
- Modified BLN compatible kernel
- BLN Control App (free or pro on market)
Stock Samsung SMS app is not generating notifications?
No, this is because Samsung are not stupid, they knew the app was for a phone without an LED so they did not use any light flags at all. You have 3 options, hack the stock sms app to use a Lights flag, use a third party sms app like Handcent SMS or GoSMS or finally use tasker.
If you want SMS to work with stock Messaging app then flash on of these - http://goo.gl/DXlyn beware they are only for KG6 using on other roms may cause undesirable effects (or could be fine )
I want it to work for missed calls
Well then you need to get the Pro app from the market where it has an option to turn on the missed calls feature (and don't listen to some fools, this does work!)
But I am a cheapskate who doesn't buy paid for apps
TOUGH!
Awesome thread mate. Should clear it up for most people I do hope that more people release ROMs with a hacked SMS app for BLN

As soon as someone manages to make the app I am sure most custom roms with BLN would use it.

Well it worked with the stock sms on the S1, so I would suppose they can make it work for the S2.
Someone will eventually post this so let me be the one to do it instead
Why not hack the mms.apk for us so that the BLN can work with the stock sms app.

That's actually being discussed in another thread.
So.... what rom or kernels are bln enabled?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
Ninphetamine kernel is, villain rom 2.4.2 is, other roms that say in there thread title are.
Most roms are now as its the big new thing, also most custom kernels built from source are now but check there threads.
CF root isn't bln enabled as its a repackaged stock Kernel, stock roms are not unless modified with a custom kernel with it enabled and a updated liblights

Awesome idea OP!!!
Good idea, now let's see if people can keep the questions in this thread...
I've had BLN Pro since SGS(1), and with Criskelo and Ninphetamine it works great.
Only thing I've done differently, is install Handcent, to get BLN working with SMS and MMS.
To get calls working BUY THE PRO! and tick off "call notification" in "BLN for Android-OS apps"
Since this the appropriate thread, are there any major disadvantages for BLN to be on all the time apart from battery? Have S1 users ever faced BL issues, stop working completely or something?
Great thread!
Cheers

It's only battery AFAIK.
And with appropriate settings you can even keep the drain low enough.
I set mine to 30min blink and 45min static - if I haven't picked up the phone by then I wont in a longer time anyways so more blinkage is not required IMO and for the meantime I got all the notifications I want.
Drain on battery is totally OK for me with those settings.

yeah it basically is just the negative battery impact
your phone will not deep sleep while BLN is active so the longer you have it showing the longer your phone stays "awake" which therefore increases your battery drain
I have mine set up to blink for 5 minutes then be static for 30.
Thank you for the thread. Before that I had to figure out all that by myself. Time saving
Alright, I think I won't get banned by asking my 'noobish' queries 'here'. So here it goes,
► I flashed Ninphetamine 2.0.5 kernel and Flashed Liblights.zip from Jame Bond thread and installed BLN Control Pro. Now the thing is, Missed Call notification DOES work. Now the thing is everyone is saying that BLN drains battery, I mean how could it drain if it's not in use?
► Also, I'd like to know what is Static LED timeout? I have it Disabled. What does it do?
► Schedule BLN? Why should I turn it on when it works with it Disabled?
I am using it from yesterday and I don't see there is any extra battery drainage or something like that other than two extra services, w|FileObserver & w|LedObserver is there under Wakelocks for a minute or two, and usually that short period didn't make any difference on battery backup. So why is that everyone keeps saying BLN drains battery if it does nothing?
Thanks in advance.
Regards.
When the buttons lights up continually can the phone sleep? When they blink it's pretty clear why the phone does not sleep...you need an active timer to switch the buttons states.

Of course, when the buttons glow the phone will not sleep but that state won't be forever as a normal person does check his/her cell phone at an interval of 15-30 mins, least I do, I didn't ask for that. What I asked was, How does BLN drain battery when it's not in use, and by that I mean when you have NO new/unread notifications?
I hope I made myself clear enough.
Regards.
From my experience on my phone, BLN does NOT drain the battery when there are no notifications blinking.
Phones enters deepsleep and stays there.

1: see above, it's not
2: when the LEDs are on constantly-on / nonblinking (=static) this timeout controlls when they will go OFF again - as long as the LEDs are on it drains the battery more, so set this to a sensible value to allow the phone to go back to deepsleep
3: if disabled BLN does it's job 24h a day, if enabled you can set times when BLN should NOT do any LED notifications, for whatever reasons you might have.
I presume that there is no way to use BLN with an unmoded galaxy 2?

Correct.
You need a custom kernel that supports BLN.
Just wanna know is there any call blocker app that when people call to my phone, i want them to hear a sound like my phone is in switch off mode? I dont want a rejected sound. I know every telco operator provide you with many different kind of sound when someone try to call you when your phone is in switch off, like unable to reach the phone bla bla bla. I wanted my phone to fakely appear offline or in switch off mode and on the other hand i can still play with my phone, surfing internet and so on.
is there any app or xposed module that can make our phone to do that?
Sorry for my english.
Um curious to know who you are trying to block??
Have you tried 'Call blocker' in xposed framework, maybe you can customise the block mode. Failing that Google (Store/Web) is your friend.

You can either use all volumes and vibration to silent (in which case people calling you will get the same feedback as when you are not near the phone) or you can use use airplane mode (more like when you outside of the coverage area or out of battery). I am actually all 3 (2 mentioned + blocking mode) depending on what I want to achieve.
For the first mode if you will use a program like LLAMA you can even set exceptions (and a different set of exceptions could eventually be set for blocking mode).

1. You can not hide from your telco, you are either connected to them or you are not.
2. If connected the telco gets to decide what other people hear after a rejected call.
3. If not connected (airplane mode) you can still be connected to WiFi and browse the internet.

AFAIK atm there is not such app that can do a job as you require. I'm also searching for this kind of app for a long time, but have not found yet. In the older Symbian phone, I've used the app "ACM - Advanced Call Manager" and it does this job exactly what you need.
If there was an app like that, it should work in the following manner: When there is an incoming call from a number in the blacklist, this app will answer the call automatically and then play the preset announcement (e.g 'The number you've called is not available at the moment, please try again later' blah blah...).
Atm the best call blocker app on Android I've used is 'Call Master', it is very powerful and flexible. But it doesn't has this feature yet.

Yeah, Finally a very good and professional answer to me. Thank you my friend :good: I'll thank you later. Im limited to 8 thanks already. Yes i use this feature in symbian phones years ago before i take my step to android, like you said the app really do the job. But there are no apps that similar to ACM for our Android atm. I really wish they make one in a short time. For me, it's the best and a must have app for workers like me who dont want to give bad customer service to the clients by not rejecting their calls using samsung blocker.
Root call blocker. Used to use it on my old nexus s. If I recall correctly it made it look like you are out of coverage. But, as the app's name says, you have to be rooted.

Nope, it does not and it can not made it looks like you are out of coverage. The ONLY way this kind of app (if any) works is by auto-answering the call and auto-playing the announcement, that I have said in the previous post.
Root call blocker is just a simplify version of Call Master app, that I have mentioned above. They are from the same developer.
I'm currently using Call Master. Call Master is more powerful and more flexible than Root call blocker.

Switched to this phone from the Moto X...just looking for an app thats similar to moto assist in the aspect i can set up a silent profile at night and have anyone that calls more than once go through? I've seen tons with lists of contacts to allow to ring but I need something that will allow anyone calling more than once in a row to go through like the assist app has. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance and not sure if this could go here to start a discussion in case someone is in the same boat or if it needs to go in Q&A
Yes, questions should go in Q&A. What you're looking for is Agent:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tryagent&hl=en
The "Nights Keeper" app on the Play Store might do what you want. In addition to the whitelist which you said you are not really looking for, you can use "emergency call" mode and specify the number of times a contact must call before ringing through.

One word: Tasker. ?
been very happy with agent so far.
Nights keepers is really good!
Tasker
I'd have used smart connect if it had better functionality but its too basic. So Tasker for me too.
1. Auto GPS- Very simple profile that automatically turns your GPS on when opening Google Maps, and as an exit task, automatically turns it off when you exit Maps.

2. Gaming- Increases min CPU freq to 2265600 and max CPU freq to 2457600 while in games (just change the games I have, to games that are on your phone). Then as an exit task, sets it back to normal.
https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=95897840722648884
3. Home- When connected to my home WiFi network (just change my WiFi ID to your own) disable mobile data and turn brightness way down. As an exit task, I make it wait 30 seconds then then turn my WiFi off, turn mobile data back on and screen brightness back to normal as well. **REQUIRE SECURE SETTINGS PLUGIN**

5. Nightly Power Saving- From 2:30am till 9:00am turn auto sync off, interrupt mode set to none, notification LED off, background data disabled, background app processes at most 2, and turn on power saving mode. As an exit task, everything gets set back to normal. **REQUIRES SECURE SETTINGS PLUGIN!**

I'm using the LG Style and would like the watch to switch to DND when it's being charged, switching it back to allow notifications when removed from the charger.

Thanks but I know of that app -- I have zero desire to link the phone and watch DND (I'm one of the few people who think they made the right call in separating the two).
I want my phone to stay completely silent 100% of the time. The watch I want to notify of messages/calls ONLY when on my wrist.
