should I update to JI6 through KIES or wait it out?? - Vibrant General

I want to update to JI6 but I hear it could be until the end of October when I receive the OTA. I hear it's available now through KIES. Is it worth the risk? is there even more of a risk than doing it OTA? I had the one click lag fix installed and got rid of it a few days ago in preparation of the OTA update. I can't stand the lagggg. I want to install the lag fix back on but won't until my phone is upgraded to JI6 for fear of bricking.

I called tmobiles customer support yesterday and asked him about when I could be reciving the update. He told me if I didn't get it by friday to call back and that there would be a way to get it manually from tmobile. If you can hold out till friday call them and get it.

i say flash it through odin. If you have hardware locked phone, flash ji4 first to unlock it and then flash the JI6. After that, you will have to flash mobileAP.

I don't know how to tell if my vibrant is hardware locked. Also, I've never used Odin. I plan to bone up on it in case 2.2 update takes longer than expected. That was I can install a custom ROM and be done with it.

Wait what? How is updating via KIES (official Samsung software) more risky than updating via Odin (a third party tool)? KIES may be a bloated POS and it may not officially support USA phones but if an update is available on KIES do that over Odin. Or wait for OTA but I am personally sick of waiting

I just updated from stock ROM with root. Worked like a charm, I had to use the one-click-root to get back superuser permission afterward, though. No biggy though.
Everything seems to be working great!

forgot to add that I used Kies running on my Windows 7 32-bit laptop.

I bricked my hardware locked, totally stock phone earlier today using the Kies update. I mean, I'm not saying that the danger of bricking is that great, but its definitely possible.

Well, my laptop just died trying to install the latest kies version. I guess I'll wait till Friday now.

Thank you.

did anybody's avatar movie lock up after the update? I can still watch it but it does nothing but prompt me everytime saying "avatar.dcf is locked. Do you want to unlock it?" I can also only watch it through the movie player. The shortcut won't work.

They usually release only to a few thousand at a time the first few days, then up to 10,000 a day a few days later or something like that, so you might not get it till next week if its truly coming out.
They also have typically announced the update in the Verizonwireless.com forums under the android\incredible section. Until you see it there I would consider it a rumor.
Im just wondering if we will even get the ota if we're rooted or if we will have to unroot first.
According to this, the update is for real:

Oops...can't post a link yet.
hey OP, make this a poll
I've been seeing it everywhere, but haven't gotten it yet.

gonna have to unroot to get updates.
EDIT: I take this back. It depends on your version. If you have an older version of software and you have not turned off notifications you will get the notification to update. If, however you're running a froyo ROM then my understanding is that you won't see the update.
Been on all the android forums today , so far nobody has gotten the update OTA.
If it was out today vzw would confirm it like they did when we got the first update.
All I heard today was a friend of a friend got the update , RIGHT !
Verizon hasn't released the "official" OTA, but there is a leaked version that people are downloading and installing. It appears to be authentic, but since not an OTA may affect future Radio updates if you install it. Plenty of info over at the Droid Forum.

I'm really anxious to get the update, but I'm going to wait for the OTA. I updated my Eris with a leaked OTA, and I ended up regretting it. It made rooting much more difficult, and stopped me from getting the final OTA.

Do you know how it stopped you from getting the final OTA? i would think if you wiped and went back to a stock ROM the network wouldn't know the difference.

Nope. Known issue with the Eris leak.
Well, I'm not sure if if I have the OTA or not, or just part of it.
I rooted with the original instructions, then updated everything with Unrevoked 3.1. Stock ROM installed, have working WIFI tether.
Yesterday, got a message in my notification bar that a Verizon widget was available. I can now add a new Data Usage widget to my desktop, which says "Data Usage 0.0/0 MB Estimate as of N/A". Not sure why it isn't updating, but it's possible that it's related to me having a corporate rather than a personal account.
Never got a prompt to install any OTA. Tethering still works.
Hardware version 0002, Firmware version 2.1-update1
So maybe the Verizon widget was pushed by itself without the full OTA since I don't have the standard recovery?
FYI, the OTA has been halted in favor of packaging it up with the official Android FroYo v2.2 update. So instead up two OTA's we will have one OTA to rule them all!

No, the recommendation would probably be to hold your horses and wait till the OTA get's patched so we can simply upgrade without any hassle.

can i update?

i rooted my phone with the method found here after the froyo release. my phone is now wanting to update and i have canceled it a coupe times. i believe part of the process was revoke forever whch allows for the updates with out problems but i want to make sure first as i use mine alot!!!
Try this
For ease of updating your software, why not just download a stock ROM that's got root?
♠♠♠SteelROM♠♠♠ UPDATED 9/22 Froyo 2.2, v3.29.651.5 │Rooted│ DeOdexed RevG
If you are rooted, NEVER take OTA updates.

[Q] Leaked update...help...

So i was following those announcements about the froyo official update leak, so I went ahead and downloaded it to my Epic 4G, now they are saying that Sprint announced that the leaked update is not approved and therefore shoukd not be downloaded, I want to unroot my phone, but will it unroot it back to the Eclair version successfully or am I going to have problems with the phone?. I've read about the one click rooting and unrooting, but is it really safe to do so?
Whoa... too much here to cover in a small space. Since this appears to be your first post I suggest you start reading. You have many options and with just about as many pitfalls.
Is your phone working ok? If so, why worry now. Wait for a future update.

Yeah it's my first post here, but i've been reading instructions on how to root and unroot. My phone is working perfectly fine with the leaked update. However, when Sprint releases the official update, will the rooted phones receive the announcememnt and will we be able to update it? lol

rooting your phone does not block official ota updates, flashing custom kernels and roms will. also if you do not delete any sprint apps (nascar, telenav) you should not have any problems upgrading to new updates ota.
All I did was install update.zip of sdcard on my phone nothing else. So is my phone rooted? I have no custom roms or anything just the installed dk28. I'm gonna be able to update ota with this installed right?

dk28 would be considered a non stock (ie custom) rom
no you will not get the update ota.

so i did the same thing, downloaded the update.zip file, put it in my memory card and updated the phone using the recovery mode, so i'm not rooted just flashed, and wont be able to get the OTA update from Google?, btw im having a bit of troble with the GPS, when i enable it it say im abot 20 blocks away from my actual location, however, when i connect to a wireless network, per say my home network the location is right 0.o
other than that, the phone is working just fine

[Q] lets clear this up to relieve some stress...

So installed 2.2.1 on my phone via sdcard blah blah blah. That's it. Nothing else. No changes unless that update did it itself. Someone said as long as you did just that, I can still update to the official OTA 2.2. They said this doesn't block updates, changing roms and kernels does. Is this true cause if so then ill just wait till the update and not revert back to stock.
no. you will not recieve ota updates running anything except official stock rom. that would be di18 or older.

Relax, take a deep breath, and stop making threads.
If your phone works fine now, go with it. The official update will be leaked here too, and you will be able to flash it the same way you flashed DK28.
Will you be able to get it OTA? Possibly, but Sprint rolls everything out slowly. I got my phone 2 weeks ago and it claimed I was on the newest version: DG27! Obviously DI18 was out but their OTA system is flaky at best.
If you want to go back to being part of the masses, go read the thread about how to Odin back to stock and wait patiently for Sprint to update you.
If you want the latest and greatest, stick with DK28 and flash the new version when it comes out.
Simple as that.

NO it didn't i just found the link to the "official" update and downloaded it, flashed it and thats it. chances are, the ACTUAL leaked version will be able to download before the OTA actually hits.

When I first got the epic my first phone was on dg27 and after 2 days still wouldn't update so I did it myself with odin. I took it back cause I felt maybe there was something wrong since it wouldn't update itself. The one I have now came with di18 on it. Why do some phones not update themselves?

It has nothing to do with the phone. The OTA system rolls out slowly across the country. Also, the function to check for updates seems to not actually check the main server, but rather waits for updates to be pushed to it. This push could take a few days even if your area is live for the update.
Just another reason to flash from our wonderful community and ignore their OTA updates. Also, a terrible reason to return a phone...
Are you saying that if I waited long enough it might have updated itself? I called sprint tech and explained to them that I was two updates behind and they said it should have updated by now and that it must have an issue. So he said take it back to where I got it and he would put a note in my acct. That the phone was defective. So I played with it that night and flashed the update to it and rooted it just to learn.

You can do an OTA update any time you want, you just have to have a stock version running on your phone. When you do an OTA update it checks and verifies your phone to see if everything is there that needs to be there. If you're running a non stock ROM, it'll fail. If you're running a Fruitcake, it'll fail. If you want to OTA, which...there are other ways to upgrade, but...if you WANT to OTA, flash the Froyo .sbf to get back to stock. Since you're on Froyo. Or you can flash the Gingerbread .sbf to upgrade that way, or...do it online at the website.

No guarentee you will be able to root again after each ota, its just a general RULE of all custom firmware, once you root/jailbreak/whatever your device, you no longer get updates from official sources, you get them from custom sources same as you got root. Of course you CAN do whatever you want but that doesnt mean you arent gonna f*** something up. For example: the first three updates for the Atrix you would have been f***ed accepting the ota beofre running "retain root" software. Just fyi, you may have only lost root accepting the ota (this time), but you still did it wrong. Read and learn. Follow the rule for all devices, or you WILL without a doubt eventually cause yourself more trouble than if you just did it the right way the first time! And the right way, again, is: Once you root you dont accept ota updates, you get your updates here at XDA.
