[Q] Home dock? - G2 and Desire Z General

I like the clock function when docked - the problem is there is no home dock yet. Or is there, and I just cant find it?

I noticed the new myTouch has dock connectors on the side, which would hint to it being available. The G2, on the other hand, does not. Perhaps through USB connection like the myTouch 3G?

The Galaxy S was advertised as having a nice dock, which never actually came to be. The lack of docks, especially with these nice Android dock modes, is extremely disappointing.
Man, sometimes I really regret not owning a Nexus One.

I just made the phone open the clock app when I'm plugged in to power using tasker.
I liked this feature from the blackberry lol

same here...coming from a bb 9700 this is not so convient...wish there was a dock for this phone so i can actually use this phone as a alarm clock or a bedside clock....
^ hows that tasker app working for you?

There will probably some docks. I'm guessing seido is working on one. It shouldn't be too hard since the microUSB is on the side you would dock it on. Don't need any connectors or anything.

hopefully we do see a dock soon- what tasker app are you talking about?

Pretty well, no problems with it so far. I have a few options set up already and it's working quite well. Including wifi when I'm near an AP I'm familiar with (home and work).
I'm not sure how a dock would work, I don't remember seeing contact points like they had on the Bold 9700.

Not to hijack this thread, but I have it set to show the Clock App when I plug in the USB cord (whether it be USB from computer or from the wall--you have the option to choose one, the other or both).

[BRAINSTORM] Auto-change keyboards while driving?

First off, i know its illegal to text while driving, but sometimes its necessary. so lets leave that as my own business. save the smug comments, please.
---------------
with that said, im not familiar with car/dock mode on any device. im not sure if there is a way to activate any car mode for the vibrant. if there is let me know.
i basically would love it if somehow i could make it so that while im driving, swype automatically becomes my default input method. And then when im not driving, switch back to my default.
would i be able to use tasker? how would the profiling go? location or time based profiles obviously would not work consistantly... im a lazy american, so i would like for all of this to be automatic. I realize that i could just create a profile and activate it manually every time i get in the car, but whats the fun in that? i have a smartphone, i wanna see how smart i can make it.
anyone have any ideas?

The best you're going to do is get something that will switch over when you click a short cut. Your phone does not have any "vehicle sensors".

why don't you just text with your voice on Vlingo? Car mode is on the widget. It will also read your texts to you by enabling safereader. car mode is not automatic, you actually have to tap a little car.
Of u have time to text while driving it should be pretty easy to just press nd hold then tap and done.

Really? I've been running with it all the time for a while now and my battery is just fine. ~20-24 hours if I don't constantly text/surf. (Which unfortunately, I do.)
I have to say voice search does it for me, I'm always impressed at how accurate it is. And it literally is one long button press of the search button away.
What happens when you drive your car? Your GPS would be able to detect it moving at a certain speed.... but I can't think of anything else (nevermind the fact that it wouldn't detect anything out of the norm when you weren't actually in movement). Docking it with the car dock obviously could set that off, but there's nothing else.
Like you said, it is not a big enough hassle for people to bother with it. Long pressing the input window allows you to switch it very quickly, like you pointed out yourself.
Just use the voice type button on your keyboard. It's by the return key. It works fantastically.
Fyi it's not illegal to text and drive in all states either. You can safely text and drive if you concentrate more on driving. People just don't for the most part. That's all I'm saying so I don't feed the trolls

Personally vlingo or the built in speech to text is your best bet, tasker is always an option but in order for that to work well you would have to have gps on at all times. im not sure if its possible but you could use a better home or custom toggle to switch but until samsung gets its act together the car home app is unlikely to work the way you want it.
Never mind

It looks to me like there would be a way. There is that one app that can tell when your driving and turns off texting abilities. How much harder would it be to have it activate a certain profile. I'm know dev, but it seems like it's a possibility

Got mine this morning, copied over an mp4 movie and it plays very well. Don't like the default book reader because I don't know if its possible or not but I couldn't open my own epub files from it which would have been great because the app itself is actually nice. I'm still at work so I couldn't play with it as much as I would have liked to and the time I did have to spend on it I started installing some of my favorite apps (all free) like task manager, androzip, pandora, sketchbook...battery life has been great so far but again no real tests yet. I will def play with it more once I get home tonight and let everyone know if there are any issues. Sorry, forgot to mention how annoying the power button is as well as the extra charger that I have to carry around now.

How do I disable the annoying clock that comes on when on Samsung Desk Dock?

Anyone figure out how to not make the clock appear when docked? It's like pulling teeth to try and get out of it... ugh
The only way I found is to hit the Recent Apps button to return to whatever apps you had up before. It does make it frustrating because I wanted to use the tablet while docked. I suggest opening up all the apps you plan to use first and then docking. This definitely needs to be fixed with the next update.

Yeah I read it in another post too... WOW, that's utterly a deal killer. This dock is going back to best buy first thing in the morning. For $35 that's intolerable not to be able to work around.
I have the Samsung Infuse 4G and the Samsung OEM desk dock for it, and all you have to do to disable it is to remove the Samsung Dock app... but I'm guessing they've baked it into their version of 3.1... I'm assuming the issue will go away once a clean Android stock comes out or custom ROMs, but the dock's odd, too-slanted viewing angle was annoying me anyhow, so it's going back to BBY, hehe
The only way around this that I have been able to find so far is to delete the DeskClock.apk from the system/app folder. Obviously this is only for root users.
That kind of sucks because it leaves you without a clock. I tried putting the stock honeycomb clock from the xoom on the 10.1 and the desk clock still came right back up when connected to the dock.
Use Root Explorer and navigate to the app. Should be in System/App. Then rename it to ClockOld or something. That should disable it.
I am rooted so I just froze "[ALARMS] Clock 2.0.3" with Titanium Backup. This does not effect the clock in the lower right of the stock Honeycomb launcher and that's enough for me.
The freez did the trick!!
What yiou have to do is a hard reset, which is the factory reset. You lose all data but it seems to be working for me now once i did it.

Let's Rant!

Here we can rant about our beautiful new smartphones to hopefully relieve some stress. Sound good? I'll begin.
For starters, I hate the framrate issues that occur too often for a phone with 2GBs of RAM! Clearing a recent app, hitting the home button, or opening up messages always gives me an annoying st-stutt-ter that simply should'nt be ther. I also hate that it is impossible to access your internal storage from a Mac or Linux based computer? Really? I can plug a cheap $10 mp3 device from the 1930's, drag and drop some music and be good to go. Also, what is up with pop-up? pop-out? play?! Why can it only be used (for my knowledge) with videos that are saved onto the phone?! AND how can I put them on the phone with my Mac?! URGH, I can choose between 16, 32, or 64 GBs BUT I still need an SD card to put basic media on my phone? I also don't like how you can't change the shortcuts on the lockscreen, the phone has 8 different main colors between TouchWiz, ICS, and the Nature UX, I originally made this thread on my phone but got a text and tried to go back into Chrome and my text disappeared, AND how they took the AutoText? feature out of TouchWiz (when you can make your phone automatically substitute "sm" into a smiley face or whatever else you want to configure AKA the thing I liked most about TouchWiz). WOW, *takes a deep breath* I feel better. What would you like to rant about?!
P.S. I LOOOOVVVVEEEE my phone though, it just has some slightly annoying kinks (just like every other phone).

I know! This is such a huge letdown. I went into a T-Mobile store today to test it out and was disappointed because I wanted to watch youtube videos while I multitask. I have not ever been given the choice to what player I would like to use except for once on a facebook video someone uploaded and it DID work but other than that it does not allow me to use this on YouTube videos. :/ maybe someone could help? I can try to mess with YouTube real quick.
Update: nope, still couldn't get it to work and I tried both the mobile sight and the youtube app. Different settings, longclick on the video etc. Oh wells
I love the feel of the phone, the battery life, the WiFi speeds, the display, and the speed, but...
The noise on the headphone jack is distracting and awful. Like, making me wish I had bought the Galaxy Nexus bad.
The Bluetooth range for my headsets appears to be about half that of my Vibrant. I used to be able to leave my phone on the counter and wander from room to room, but now it needs to be in my pocket. (To be fair, I haven't tried it with Power Saving off yet.)
How do I.....
Remove labels under the icons on the home screens?
Remove the page indicator?
Reorder bookmarks and get the reorder to stick in the stock browser?
I want to stick with TouchWiz and stay close to stock for now. I understand other launchers can do what I want, but I don't want to change for now.
Thanks!

I'm not aware of any TouchWiz settings that are user-configurable. (I don't want to discount Samsung making configurable options that could be set with the installation of a configuration program.)

Anyone notice the phone getting warmer than usual, not hot but just enough to become uncomfortable, i am coming from a skyrocket and did not have the same issue, i thought the s4 was supposed to run cooler however the lower half of the phone seems to get warm doing very light browsing and sometimes doing nothing at all.

Dragging and dropping works fine on a Windows machine. Android uses the long-standardized MTP protocol on USB but it seems little work went into support because only the Zune really used it. (Even on Windows, there are a few quirks.)
It's an awesome protocol for what it does and it fits nicely with Google's new unified partition model (you like getting upgrades for your phone and not managing storage space, right?), but this is the proverbial broken egg to make that nice Android omelet.

My phone gets warm in bright areas almost certainly as a result of the screen power usage. Is the phone plugged in? It gets warm on the lower half while charging, too.

It's kinda silly, but I like the stock clock and weather on the home screen. I also like some of the widgets, especially the calender. I have purchased several alternative in the past that I could use, but the calender is a biggie for me. I have tried many of them and none of them quite hit the mark, for me anyway.
I have tried many launchers. Go Launcher is the only one I have not played with in depth. I may give it a try tonight. I really like ADWex but the lack of a nice calender bothers me. I used smooth calender with it, but I really like the TouchWiz calender.
Always open to ideas. Thanks.
yea most phones get warm when plugged in but this one seems to be getting warm while not on the charger and also while not being strained too much at all. Maybe i got a lemon but id like to hear other owners experiences. I will be exchanging it regardless but when you pay this much stupid issues like that should be resolved before launch.

Go to android.com/filetransfer/ and download the app. Open the app, then connect your phone to your mac. Bring down the notification bar and click on the USB connection. Change it to connect as camera and it will work. You'll then have access to the internal filesystem as well as the sd card.

I have been emailing manufacturer's because they are apparently working on software to use with the device to pair to the phones. There are no current apps that utilize call handling from Phone to Watch so the device is more of a standalone device for now. Plays videos, good camera, touch functionality is good, it got a little bit hot while i was runing ADW launcher so i uninstalled that... stock launcher runs fine. Charges fast - FM radio feature is pretty damn cool however you have to use stock headphone it comes with as antenna, they plug in via micro usb. Overall great build quality... In the video, the person said that the battery will last 1 and 1/2 days. (Not a China dude but I still understand their Singlish)
Btw the battery life is probably the same for other similar smart watches unless they have battery tweaks like the Qualcomm toq and the pebble smart watch which reduces or fully disables touchscreen and colour
Well the battery life i don't know because i haven't killed it yet..... The battery meter goes up and down QUITE a bit though so i can't get a real good read on the battery gauge, which is kind of frustrating...
So far i've rooted and changed the boot animation with rom toolbox pro. I cannot get the stock lock screen clock and launcher to go away tho, even after changing the filenames in /System/App which leaves me boggled. I am running ADW and a large digital clock on my homescreen and would rather unlock to that then the analog clock.
If you guys are interested, i did a quick review of the watch i will upload to youtube tonight and make new thread with video

Well the battery life i don't know because i haven't killed it yet..... The battery meter goes up and down QUITE a bit though so i can't get a real good read on the battery gauge, which is kind of frustrating...

What are its capabilities as far as connecting to a phone
Short review
I just received mine in the mail and must say, I'm pleasantly surprised. Build quality is excellent. The screen is bright and hires enough to be able to read everything. Wifi is stable and quite good, in contrary top most other China devices I have (mostly JXD). Of course the keyboard is a bit cramped and hitting the right letter is a gamble but the screen is sensitive and it doesn't take a strong touch. The interface is very smooth and responsive. I have installed a few apps which work well. The only thing that keeps crashing is Skype, which is weird as it came with the watch. There seems no way to use Google Now either (it keeps crashing) which is a pity as I don't want to even think about searching with the on-screen keyboard. The loudspeaker is okay (not great). I haven't tried using it to call anyone yet, that will be next on my list. I just noticed that the watch doesn't take micro sim cards. That quite surprising for such a small device. Now I'll have to go out and buy a regular sim card. I'm not a big fan of adapters.

It looks like a nice device I'm torn between buying this watch or just waiting around for the kickstart project Neptune Pine. Which seems to be a much more polished product
I'm also thinking about getting this or the neptune but the Pine looks so big it will make my already small wrists tiny!
I like the idea of the Pine but think I might go for the ZGPAX....

The thing is that its recognized by bluetooth as a phone so there is file transfer capability but not call handling or notification handling until the manufacturer releases an app to provide support for this... I would advise anyone who purchases to try and contact the manufacturer and get this info. Ive been looking a week now for an app in the store but have found nothing.
