[Q] ota 2.2 to 2.2 deodeoxed? - Droid X General

Could it be done? Or will I get stuck in a boot loop? Well I have my x deoxed but I can't seem to install any transparent notification vbar. I did that ultimate 2.2.2 and manually installed the done file. And also did that service transparent fix so im not sure if I should have left the service jar alone or not. Any help be nice.

Automatic Updates?

Perhaps a silly question but do you need a SE sync account for automatic updates to be received in the notification bar? My phone has never shown these messages and i have updated periodly through SEUS.
Another thing is it true rooted phones won't receive automatic updates?
Any light shed on this subject would be ace, thanks I only ask cos I don't won't to miss the glorious day when 2.1 is released.

I didn't create a SE-login and I got a few updates in the past. Up to r2ba026.
As far as for the rooting, if you root using the x10 root .apk, I 'm sure everything will work fine
Sent from my X10i using XDA App
Thanks for your responce. I wasn't sure that's because I thought you may need the data sync to any FW updates can be sent.
I'm using the universal androot for rooting and finding that pretty good. It allows me to unroot if needs be, does the x10 root .apk you mentioned do this?
Does it make a differnce to any features or usabilty depending on different methods of rooting?
Sorry for so many questions, I am curious about all this

I used the .apk android rood method only to remove moxier and quadrapop, afterwards I unrooted... so I don't know
Of caurse the upgrade will again remove root, but let's hope the apk still works in 2.1

What is SE-Sync?
When updates are available OTA for unrooted phones, the carrier will send out a message as far as I know. I've been notified as soon as the update was available.
Then again, my carrier sent out letters in the mail to make sure people updated their firmware a few weeks ago. (got an update that doubled internet download speed with a new APN, and support for Japanese carrier mail)

If apk rooting doesn't work in 2.1 I suppose it will eventually work one day... Untill then I'll leave the unused apps alone.
Se-sync is the contact/agenda/favorites sync's app provided by SonyEricsson... I don't use it, I prefer google sync.

Un-rooting mt3g

K. Rooted my sons phone to put cm6 on it. Nandroid backup of his 1.6 before I installed it.
Reflashed the 1.6 so he can get the OTA 2.2. So, now he has 1.6 but is still rooted.
Now how do I unroot it?
Sent from my Vibrant using XDA app
You shouldn't need to do anything else. The update will overwrite the custom recovery which should be the last thing left of your being "rooted".
Sent from my HTC Magic using Tapatalk
Thanks. Just making sure. He hasn't had any notifications of any update yet.
Sent from my Vibrant using XDA app
I just thought about something, how did you root it in the first place? If you used the Androot method you will need to re-run the program selecting the unroot option, then I would suggest also doing a factory reset. Reason being is that with the Androot method you would have rooted the phone as the first step so you could use ROM manager to create the backup and to flash a new recovery.

Man. It's been so long I can't remember... I know I used terminal on my g1 and rooted his phone about the same time and I'm pretty sure I used the method on the cyanogen wiki. I will have to go look at that.
Still nothing being reported on his phone about any updates....
Sent from my Vibrant using XDA app
Okay. Checked on the cyanogen wiki and I am now positive I used the security hole in 1.5 method ny flashing a new SAPP.IMG file.
But, my question remains. The phone is still rooted and on 1.6, will it get the OTA update? I guess I could just wait until the weekend is over to see. Nothing so far....

New help with failed update

Other than being rooted. I added droid guy to notifications screen. When I tried to update it failed. I am I noob so someone please help me out.
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
If you open settings--> about phone
What does it say for your system version? Did you allow your phone to download the update, or did you try and pull an update from online? If you can provide some more information, that would be great, and myself or someone else can help you narrow down the problem you are having.
Thanks
System is 2.3.15.mb810. My phone downloaded update and started it up. It failed almost halfway thru. Will a factory reset and wipe get me back to stock. Really hope you can help me.

Have you removed any default programs? Im not sure if just a factory reset would work. Do you have koush's bootstrap installed to make nandroid backups?
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
Nope haven't removed anything. Rooted mainly to use apps. Only thing I changed was notifications drop down screen. I added little droid guy to it.

I don't have bootstrap.

So I factory reset and update failed halfway thru. The little droid guy is still in my notification screen, so that has to be problem. I used ninja morph to get him on there. It was really simple to do, but no clue on how to change back. Please help.

[Q] Questions on themes and deodexing

Ok I've managed to get my device rooted and overclocked, I have Bootstrapper and Clockwork Mod. My question is am I deodexed and am I ready for themes now
No, you have three options:
1) Manually deodex your phone
2) Install a Rom that's already been deodexed
3) Download and flash your stock files for deodexed ones
Ok how do I know which themes have been deodexed already and how do I know what apex I have

If you browse the droid x themes and apps section of xda, the theme creator will tell you what has been deodexed or not. I know the 928 blackglass theme is deodexed already but I do not know of many themes that come deodexed. Of you wish to deodex your phone, search google for "xUltimate 2.2 Manually deodex your phone".
As for apex...this is a custom ROM, so this will not be running on yout phone yet, you would have to install it of this is the ROM you wish to run.

I have a feeling that after I deodex I'm still not done ...lol I actually tried loading the DXred theme the other day and it worked ..then I noticed that the dialer button didn't work then it killed my service ...ya think that happened because I was not properly deodexed?

Ah, ok. Xultimate is an application that runs on your computer, not your phone.
If you have your phone rooted, and know how to use the Droid X bootstrap to install .zip files, then download this file:
http://www.mediafire.com/?gvvgnum0uma2huk
Run this with Droid X bootstrap and you will be deodexed, and not need xultimate.
Ok after a lot of research I finally understand the whole thing.....most if the themes I see on line you need a custom ROM to run them which of course I'm running stock therefore I have to choose from the stock ones which is cool. I found a pretty cool one called Executive Red and it's working perfect. Thank you very much for all of your help

No problem. Glad to hear you got where you want to be. I would recommend just doing some research, and when you feel like you're comfortable, try out one of the custom ROMs. I regret not jumping into one a little sooner. They really have a great advantage many times.
Look into themes from Bignadad. He does themes for liberty, rubix, and did one for the original 2.3.15 OTA. Check him out on twitter as well, and you can keep up on what he is working on. I would recommend Bignadad by far, he is in my opinion the most thorough with his themes, and they always look amazing.

You have to pay for the hotspot app to work unless you perform another modification such as the one that team black hat released to use it for free.

Ok so even though my lap top sees it and says it's connected they (Verizon )can still block you? And how do I get this mod from team black hat

Yes, it will say its there, but you cannot use it without paying (kinda). There is another mod, where you start the program, then put the plane in airplane mode, then disable airplane mode and it works as if you had subscribed to the service...
or there is the tbh hack.. which they say is unethical, and they don't condone, so please read the whole page before using this... just a disclaimer.

You basically download a .zip and flash it in clockworkmod recovery.

So I just rooted

Hey,
So I just rooted my DX. I have milestone overclocker and titanium backup as well as ROM manager and wireless tether. Now what do I do ? I'm sorry for being a complete noob but I'm eager to learn. I have heard a little about flashing custom ROMs and was just wondering if there was one that is like Gingerbread (2.3) out for the DX. I just got this phone a month ago and I ready to jump on the Rooting Wagon

I would recommend looking around the Droid X android development forum:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=691
Here is where you will find a lot of the discussion and posts from Developers about their ROM's. I think Fission (latest is 2.5.7) has a gingerbread theme set up. I believe there are others as well.
When it comes to ROM's its really a personal decision. In my opinion, all the bigs ones (Rubix, Fission, Liberty, Cobalt, GummyJar, Tranquility, Apex) are all AMAZING roms. It's really just what you like the feel of... I personally use Liberty 1.0 right now. Its a combination of Kejar31 and Jrummy's work. There is a "new" dev team, phoenixdevs, that will be picking up the GEM series that cvpcs (one of the most amazing android developers ever) had been doing.
To start, just make sure you have a nandroid backup from Koush's recovery, and then try out the different ROM's you are interested in and see what you like best.
If I can make a recommendation about themes...check out Bignadad's themes... He does work for Rubix, Liberty, and GummyJar. Here is his latest work:

No problem. You can grab it from the attachment below =)
then just move it to your phones sdcard. Use a file manager like Astro File Manager (free on the market) to browse on your sdcard. Press on the .apk file and then press the install option.
Then in your application menu, find the app, then click the first option (this hijacks the boot process the same way that ROM manager does). ROM manager has a built in version of this app and does the same thing. I just prefer to do it through Koush's app personally.
After you click the top button a pop up should come up with the word success (press this). Then click reboot recovery. From there, use the volume up/down buttons to move the green cursor that highlights the options, and use the camera button to select. Go down to Backup and Restore (press camera button to select), then press camera button when Backup is highlighted. (I am merely suggesting how I do it, as I don't rely on ROM manager for much personally. that and I dont remember how ROM manager manages backups... LoL).
It will do its thing, then bring you back to the main menu when it is finished. Click the camera button on "reboot system now" and you now have a working backup. They are stored on your sdcard in the following hierarchy: /sdcard/clockworkmod/backups
Then you just use that same menu if you ever want to restore using the restore option instead of backup =D
I also use Koush's app to install my custom ROM"s and themes as well. You just go down to the option that is something like "install .zip from sdcard" and then you can browse your sdcard for any ROM/theme/mod you have downloaded and saved there...
Hope this helps! Ask if you have more questions, I'm glad to help =)
Wow you made this sound so simple that I just did a nandroid backup on my phone for the first time! I have had my X now for about 4 months its been rooted since day one but I've never had the courage to go forward with roms. So is it really that simple , just dl the rom and flash it with Koushs bootstrap? If I flash a rom but want to update via ota to gingerbread I would just flash my nandroid using the flash rom from. Zip option? Im excited to start with roms I never ralized it was this easy to get back to stock!

Also do you have to use titanium backup to backup apps to use in new rom, or can you use what is in the nandroid to reinstall apps on rom?

Yes it really can be that simple. just keep track of any backups you make, and always restore back to a clean nanroid for when OTA's come out, and you should be good. Just make sure if an OTA comes out and the bootloader version gets updated, don't go back to a nandroid with a different bootloader...you will brick your phone.
Example: on old ota (2.3.15) and update to 2.3.34. Then try to go back to 2.3.15=brick =(

Depends on what you mean by 3g hotspot. There is "wireless tether for root" in the market for free. This allows you to tether using your 3g signal. The default Verizon app (don't think it is in Liberty...) requires a paid service... People have found hacks to get by this, but I don't recommend it, since it is cheating the service provider (Verizon) out of money if you hack their app.
I see no problem with wireless tether for root tho! Totally a dev's own work to get free tethering.
Thanks
