AdFree .
Temp root has no use what so ever. The only useful thing I could think of is aid to find permanent root.
I just think that its not worth going through the trouble rooting this thing to have to do it again and again, etc.

its pretty easy with the 3 click root....
block ads with a new hosts file (love this)
vpn into your companies' ipsec network (assuming you have the group password)
wifi tether (you knew that already)
poke around in the file system, view/replace your wpa_supplicant.conf file with the old populated one from your G1 (oh wait, that's for me)

I get the whole its easy part but you are back at square one each time. Its fun to try but not something id enjoy doing every time the device had to be powered off.
I'm just saying I hope we get permanent root soon. But that's another topic.

What?!? I have read in several places that the EVO doesn't support "permanent" root.
First of all, technically what does that mean?
Second, what does it mean for a "lover of ROOTed EVOs" like my self??
Just a little confused and worried now...lol
Sent from the MATRIX... while plugged into my EVO... using the XDA app... from a galaxy far-far away.......
Could you link some of the places that you heard this? The original unrevoked 1 was a on phone app that was not permanent. I think it might mean you can unroot if you choose to. Not sure though. There is defietally permanent root.
Well if it's not permanent it is sure lasting me a long time. Like 6 months now. How much longer do you think I have before my root runs out? Please answer this is very important.

I'm new to the whole rooting thing and I wasnt sure what it meant... I will try to find the places I read that... I know one was in the market for a one click root app... And when I saw that I googled it but couldn't find anything conclusive....ghats why I thought I would ask the experts here

hehe sorry. We absolutely have permanent root. Like The Dude said, the original unrevoked was not permanent but every method since has been permanent. I'm sure whatever you read was old and/or possibly misinterpreted. Rest assured, your root is permanent and will not run out any time soon
Cool... I didn't think it meant it would run out, but it tricked me into thinking that something could happen...

I think he's talking about z4root which isn't permanent with the Evo due to requiring Nand unlock.

Well I've read through the wiki and I'm still lost... what's the best way to root a new Evo for 004 hardware? I've been told Unrevoked is good but I've also read threads that it doesn't work with 004. Any help would be greatly appreciated...

I heard they updated unrevoked to root 004.
Search the dev section. You will find the root guide.

it is not the easiest way.. but it will teach you want you are doing at each step and why.
uses unrevoked and amon_ra
these are solid.. and will be great for future mods.
Unrevoke is the easy way off rooting, but make sure to have hboot drivers install( windows only) before rooting
sent from my evil evo!!
No worries
I use Unrevoked all the time and it works flawlessly on Hardware 2 through 4 phones. Just make sure you download the latest version at:
http://unrevoked.com/#evo
Other methods as mentioned above work too but can be somewhat complicated. In the end, they all use Unrevoked to achieve S-OFF.
Add one more vote for Unrevoked.

the all in one root method. search the dev section for it. very easy & simple.
Ha... I'm familiar with Adb, have Android SDK setup on ubuntu and windows, but the sheer amount of info here for the Evo, its overwhelming, a lot of defunct procedures and conflicting info, I just didn't want to start down the wrong path. I'm seriously considering getting the Thunderbolt, I'm in the 30 day trial with Sprint and although I like the Evo with all the development here, the Thunderbolt is looking
awfully appealing... Cheers to everyone for your assistance...

I guess you have never rooted a G1 or MyTouch. Some you even need to make what is call a Goldcard just to root. The Vibrant is pathetically simple.

WORD.
......................
You think the vibrant is hard to root?
Try installing a Nand Android on a HTC HD2 for the very first time. It literally took me an hour and a half to research and install Android.
The vibrant is the only phone that I can root and install a custom rom without connecting it to a PC.
Yeah it was super easy... too bad all phones can't have Odin .

Manually puttig in codes for partitioning the SD card was a pain too, when the recovery didnt do its job. HD2 was easy too lol, before the VIbrant i had a HD2 and Nand was easy
That's because you don't even have to root the gtab. Put clockwork and the rom on the sd, vol+ and power and boom! Instant gratification.
Check usb debugging-dl z4root app from 4shared.com-root
Takes less than 2 minutes.

Yup. That's pretty much in a nutshell how these things work around here. No sense in getting particularly agitated about it, if nothing else this may be a good chance to take a breather from the site for a bit while things settle down. At the very least just stick to the development forum to keep tabs on the latest roms and kernels.

But besides that, I don't know any other method

The revised apk works great!
Who would think with Verizon's name on the app that it would not like rooted phones. I am so happy that I dropped them last month and switched to Sprint. While the service is not up to Verizon's yet, not worrying about losing my unlimited data is awesome.
