I went ahead and ran the firmware update Last night. The progress bar went all the way through, but when it got to the end it said "update is fail." I don't know what to do. I booted into stock recovery and I'm wondering what will happen if I click "reinstall packages." Any chance this will undo whatever the firmware did? What will happen?

Well reinstall packages as in? What is your update.zip?
Is it the one from Clockwork?
That's a good question. I don't know what it is. I was hoping that clicking on it would work like going back to a restore point or something...
I guess it might actually be the one from clockwork...

Well it don't matter, I'm pretty sure that no "Update.zip: e.g; reinstalling packages will take your phone back to stock, You must use Odin to do that, Read that thread I posted a few comments up..
When I try to boot into download mode, I hear the T-Mobile jingle, but then it just stays on the "Vibrant" screen... Any tips? Not sure what I'm doing wrong.
Finally got into download mode with the help of another awesome xda forumer. I'm on step 4 now. Which .pit file do I select? I downloaded the first three files on this page: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=734475
There's two .pit files there though. Which do I use?
s1_odin_20100512.pit
s1_odin_20100513.pit
Had my last question answered with some more great help. Next, is the "PDA" file the "T959UVJFD.tar" ??
My questions been answered here. Thanks to those who pointed me in the right direction(s).

There is a thread with this info in it, but it is buried deep in over a hundred pages and I thought the warning for HelixLauncher bared having a new post.
Here is the link to download the update.
http://android.clients.google.com/packages/passion/signed-passion-FRF50-from-ERE27.1e519a24.zip
Looks like that link is dead... here is a mirror
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/113487/signed-passion-FRF50-from-ERE27.1e519a24.zip
And one more just in case the others go down.
http://www.filefactory.com/file/b1chb29/n/update-nexusone-FRF50-signed.zip
Warning!! If you use Helixlauncher, uninstall or remove its defaults. It will go into a Force Close loop, making the phone unusable without booting into recovery again and performing a factory wipe/reset.
How to flash the update, I used these steps and it worked fine, but remember, there is always the possibility to brick the phone.
1. Download file from link up there.
2. Rename the file to update.zip.
3. Note that if you're using Windows and don't have "show file extentsions" turned on in the file explorer you won't see a .zip. Just rename it to "update" (no quotes, of course) because it's already a zipped file.
4. Copy the update.zip file onto your microSD card.
5. With your Nexus One off, hold down the trackball and press the power button.
6. You'll be booted into a white screen with three Android robots on skateboards. Select "Bootloader."
7. On the next screen, select "Recovery."
8. Your phone will reboot, giving you a picture of the Android robot and an exclamation point inside a triangle.
9. Now press the power button and volume up button at the same time. It could take a couple of tries.
10. Now (using the trackball this time) choose "Apply sdcard:update.zip" and let things run their course.
Taken from the update-1 instructions on:
http://www.androidcentral.com/how-ma...your-nexus-one
Also, I don't think my phone rebooted own its own after the update. After a minute or two, I tried hitting power and power+vol up to get the menu and reset manually. During that time it reset and booted up fine. So I say give it a few minutes before trying to reboot after the update finishes.
Edit: a ton of threads have popped into existence about froyo, but I didn't see any with early warnings about Helixlauncher.... ah well, maybe this post can be helpful for someone out there.
Edit 2: From what I am seeing, AT&T phones are on a different build of Android than the T-mobile N1. Seems like if you have an AT&T version you are out of luck for right now. This update was meant for the demo devices given to the Press outlets around launch, before the AT&T phone existed.

about the HELIXLAUNCHER:
there is NO NEED FOR WIPING everything! i had the same problem after updating and these force kills were really anoying.
here's what you have to do
1. remove your sim card (necessary because other wise your phone will reboot in safe mode - don't ask me why, but it did)
2. get into safe mode: (menu button long press while the X flashes on the load, give it a few tries, it vibrate long if it works)
3. delete helix
4. reboot
5. pray and thank me ;-)
worked for me!

mabey clear your sdcard of nandroid and any other roms or patches just in case and any other root only folders like titanium or setcpu etc. etc.
The only thing I did was use nandroid, I already deleted my roms. Where is the setcpu folder?
long story short, i had root and oclf, i uninstalled it and installed voodoo, let system sit for 30 mins, i guess i got impatient, so i pulled and restored, i created the disable_lagfix file and it ran through the paces, so i decided to put one of the other roms back on that had d1 update.. anyways, it loaded but i had NO cell radio, none, also i seem to get a invalid argument when booting up to recovery but i can still boot into CWM, i have tried to restore just the modem file part to see if that works but i think it freezes about 2/3 of the way and i get a scirpt ABORTED MESSAGE (STATUS 7).
I really need someones help.
any suggestions

Not saying u did this but not having a cell radio is often a symptom of flashing something in the "phone" part of Odin instead of in the "PDA" again not saying u did this but I've seen several instances of people having this problem in irc all being caused by that. Be a little more careful with the new one. I do t think a backup will even save u if u flash something to the phone part. Goodluck sir

You could easily determine this by looking in setting - about phone - baseband version. If it says uknown, you've killed your cell radio by flashing to "phone" instead of "pda." If you have a version number, you're fine.
I flashed CWM into "phone" instead of "pda". Is there really no fixing it? I've tried nandroid recovery, Odin, everything and still no cell radio and also force closes everywhere...
Also will VZ take the phone back? The phone's less than a week old...I'll make sure to be more careful next time
Try and say you tried to run the ota update and it loaded that

Yes, there's really no fixing it. To fix the FC issues you need to get to the OS to do a privacy wipe, or wipe /dbdata from the shell. I would start with restoring everything from the Odin post to get everything back to stock. At least when you go to return it, it will look like a fully functioning phone, with just a radio that happened to crap-out.

if someone skilled pulls SCH-I500_OpenSource.zip from opensource.samsung.com, maybe theres a baseband file there somewhere that just needs to be built? idk just a desperate thought

I don't have a baseband file but i may have a fix for this. I just need to know if you are able to boot into CWM.
So first off im gonna start off and say that I dont really care about being rooted in the first place. I thought id be flashing a lot more stuff but It turns out that I never flashed anything. So on my phone as of now I just have root and I have twrp installed onto it. I did that process to take off the custom recovery status from using motochopper as well. Now my problem is that every time i try to take the ota I get booted right into twrp and then i am unable to take the update. I even downloaded the zip file and tried flashing it and I just get a failed message. Can anyone tell me whats going on? Or point me into the right direction so i can uninstall twrp so I can take the update?

Like axman said, flashing with Odin to stock nothing gets deleted. If you do a factory wipe, everything gets deleted.
You could also try to update with kies instead of ota. Maybe that will work.
The problem is not that you removed root you still are using a custom recovery you need to get back to full stock use odin to get the phone back to full stockso you'll have a stock recovery

It's a long alpha-numeric number that is associated with the file. Next time you download a rom look for it on the download page. When you down load a file the md5sum should match the original indicating a good download. There are apps that check the md5 and most file managers will show it in properties

If you've done the factory reset and that doesn't get you out I'm guessing the rom you flashed was a bad download. You made a nandroid backup before you flashed the rom, right. Boot back into recovery and restore it. Then re download the rom and try it again

Live and learn, I was afraid of that. You're probably going to have to use Odin then which will return you back to stock. And then start everything over again. Have you let the boot loop go for like 5 minutes. Sometimes it can take that long on first boot, but the vibration isn't normal.

You're just going to give up? Seriously? It's really easy to flash stock fw with Odin. And also easy to root afterwards, to each their own.

What do you mean giving up? I'm going to wait until my microSD card comes and then I will transfer the zip file that way. I don't have time to fiddle with odin. Besides I don't even have a pc, i have bootcamp, which takes a year to boot.
