Hey, I hope this is the right section to ask this in.
I have a MyTouch3G (32b) and I've went through what seems an endless amount of ROMs.
Can any of you suggest to me a good one. All I'm looking for is one that saves the most battery life. Everything else is extra.
If you can't point to a specific ROM, i understand. But what kind of things should I look for when reading through a ROM in a forum to tell whether it is battery-life-friendly?
If this is a stupid question/in the wrong place I apologize. Thank you for your time anyway!
go into the dream forum and get super d 1.8...for me its great on battery can go a day and a half with med to heavy use....plus its fast as hell
I switch between ROMs all the time, but I got the best battery life and with MANUP's 2.1 ROM for the 32B MyTouch. By default that perticular ROM is overclocked to 527MHz, but if you get the OverclockWidget V1.6 (that's the one I use...i forget who makes it, google it) and bring it down to 128MHz when the screen is off, and 384MHz when the screen is on, and then just switch it back to 527 when you play 3D games, It works great.
I have been back on MANUP's 2.1 ROM for the past 2 days, and I just hit 50% battery life, while playing Robo Defense for about 10 minutes, talking on the phone for maybe 3 hours or so throughout the 2 days, and texting maybe 10-20 times...
for me that is normal use, since I only have my phone on me for about 4 hours a day when I'm not at work. give it a shot, and at 384MHz, there is VERY little lag when you use the SpareParts app that the ROMs have on them and set your animations to FAST.
hope this helps...as I still consider myself a noob with the droid (I've only had my MyTouch for about 5 weeks)...
EDIT: with other ROMs, like the SUPER D, or SUPER E ROM, they have the option to grab either the ROM with or without the RAM-Hack (it adds about 10MB to your RAM), but renders 3D gaming useless...not even Labyrinth will play in 3d mode. It's up to you if you if you want that feature or not...
Hey, can you send me a link to Manup's ROM? I can't seem to find it anywhere x.x
Hey guys, I'm leaving for a hike later this evening, 100km over 3 days and I need to use my Hero to track my exact location.
My question is, what is the best ROM for battery life?
I took the Hero on my last hike which was 30km tracking with MyTracks and running my own 2.1 ROM (see sig) and the battery died after 9 hours.
I DO NOT care what features the build has, I need it literally to be able to run MyTracks with GPS and nothing more for the next 3 days.
I have taken an emergency charger but the battery time that's likely to give me is negligable so I need something that can make the difference between an extra hour or two, or if more is possible it would be really great.
Any advice would be appreciated asap.
Thanks.
Frankly, with GPS on, even if you turn off everything else, theres no way your going to get a standard Hero battery to last 3 days. Take charged spares.

I'm aware of that, but I don't have any spares, not time to get hold of them, you an't just buy the things locally.
I'm looking for a ROM that will give me atleast a bit more battery life than I'm likely to get with my current one and hope I can find somewhere to charge half way (1.5 days) in
maybe modaco's 3.2 ROM? its based on 1.5. the kernel would offer best performance i would have thought. all the 2.1 ROMs have bad battery life so my advice would to be stay away from those.
next time buy this bad boy

Yeh, I'm currently frantically modifying the stock 1.5 to remove Sense etc and see if iI can modify it it to be a bit more battery saving, I don't need 99% of the apps cause I just need it to run myTracks and nothing else.
My concern with Modaco is all the additions and performance increases may not necessarily be battery efficient, and the one and only time I tried ModaCo was a bad experience.
As for 2.1, of course I know theyre not great for battery, I made one (see sig)
im currently looking for a 2.1 that has decent battery performance im on the VillianROM 5.1 at the moment.
might try yours next
sincerely , i dont think that any roms would be able to get you one and a half day with gps.(
what i noticed is that battery drain differed from rom to rom with a couple of hrs between them ( like 3-4 maximum) but nothing like days

Even 3-4 hours is good enough, it gets the last recorded location 3-4 hours closer to where i was before the battery died, I'm hiking so there is only so far I can have gone within that time.
I'v just stripped down the stock Hero ROM and removed all the HTC junk including Rosie and Lockscreen and most of the apps, all of the htc widgets etc. Going to see how I get o with this, I really do like Rosie but will be interesting to see how I get on with this ugly duckling.

the mugen battery is very nice. i even bought one for myself at the beginning but i ended keeping it in my closet. The phone gets too thick and the lovely htc hero just looses its charm
well maybe you could try mcr 2.8 , disable all data sync(even google ...), even disable mobile network ( or switch on 2g). basically you can disable all the phone functions and use it only as gps i guess cause u need it for my tracks only.

Yeh, most probably, but which ones are light weight and stable (I'll stick with 1.5 builds because theyre official and fully working.)
Like I said I'm currently ripping everything out of the Hero stock one because I havn't been able to find a decent vanilla 1.5 for hero, most of it seems to be for the G1.

I would recoment SetCpu or something to keel the CPU running at 245mhz.

Use SetCPU or CPUoverclockwidget.
I use CPUoverclockwidget because it can change the CPU speed to 128MHz and also change how fast the phone should be in standby and with screen on.
My DHD turns up
No doubt wont be long before its not on stock ROM, which is the best day to day ROM thats around, closest I've gotten to DHD so far is MDeejays HD2 ROM's so have no idea who's who on the Android front.
See from a quick poke around that there are a few issues with the stock ROM, are these usually fixed with custom ROM's?
Is it too early for Gingerbread, should I just stick with 2.2 for now?
Battery life, seems to be a load of threads about this, what shoudl I expect from the battery?
Wifi, on teh HD2 WinMo there is the ability for the phone to switch the wifi off after so long if its not connected, havent seen this on MDJ's ROM's for the HD2, is it not something Android does? Does it make that much difference to the battery life? I've noticed people say they get low drain (current widget) even with wifi on..

3g appears to be the big drain on battery life, i can recommend Superpower which lets you set it to turn off 3g / wifi / Bluetooth etc when not in use, after a week to ten days you should easily get 15 - 18 hours moderate use out of the phone without unreasonable tweaks.
Everyday use ROM, I don't think you can go wrong with Cyanogen, it's stable and fast and should have enough to keep most people happy, but have a poke around the DEV forum and see what grabs your fancy and enjoy
Cheers chap, 15-18 hours isnt bad, the phone is on charge every night, I have a car charger as well as a charger in the office at work so powers not a huge issue but on the off chance I get dragged around Ikea by the missus I dont want it to die in a few hours..
Will check out the Cyanogen thread tomorrow when I get to work and colelct all the bits I need to root/flash the phone when it turns up...
Ended up going with Revolution 1.9
I like my sense clock widget..
I have noticed tho coming over from MDJ's HD2 Android builds that I've started to get adverts in Angry birds and a few other apps, there a way I can get rid of them, I'd rather pay for something and not get ads than use a free version and get ads that slow stuff down...
I just typed out my post and got the Mac equivalent of a BSoD and lost what i typed (wow fist time that has ever happened to me).
Flashed Decks, I have tried both tiamat and SavagedZen kernels. Followed a few different guides and no luck at all batter still stucks. Today my stats were as follows. 4h 55m on battery with very light to little or no usage at all and battery is at 10%. When i had it on stock ROM have much heavier usage and was never that low before. I rooted to get rid of bloatware and my main reason for AOSP ROM was to get away from sense messed up BT stack (want to use Wii controller), but if this is what I'm up against I will stick with a sense ROM (probably go back with fresh had with my hero and it worked well). is this the norm for ASOP? Ive seen other post about better battery life on sense ROMs. is it just how it handle the system different I already followed this one here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=19474607#post19474607
And couldn't get it working fully. Does anyone have any other suggestion. Different ROMs, kernels, setting I could try as a last shot. Would prefer a basic ASOP with good battery life, and most stuff working (don't know if that's to much to ask).
Thanks in advance.
I don't think that 5 hours of battery life should be considered normal for any ROM. If that is all you get from a phone then something is wrong.
Have you tried wiping battery stats in recovery? Sometimes the software just reads the battery level incorrectly. It would have to be pretty far off to claim you were at 10% after only 5 hours but who knows...
You can google it but the typical process is to charge it up to 100%, wipe battery stats, then reboot and unplug. Drain the phone until it's absolutely dead then you charge it fully again and it should read the battery level more accurately. Apparently it is bad for Lithium Ion batteries to be drained completely though, so it is not recommended to do this often as it can shorten the overall performance of your battery.
I haven't seen much of a difference in my battery life using Cyanogenmod 7 or MikG (currently running 2.58 but 2.60 is out now). I personally really prefer sense ROMs and MikG is definitely the best one I have used. Give it a shot. I have gotten 60 hours of battery life on the stock Sense ROM (granted, it was with almost no use) and over 30 hours with pretty decent usage. I posted some youtube videos to demonstrate this since I figured everyone would claim I doctored photos:
over 50 hours (wound up being 60 hours by the time I finally unplugged):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fGJucqVw0RQ
32 hours:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SPqtsRDRYEs
I have since moved to MikG but I pushed my battery again last weekend and got another 30+ hours of it. I'm extremely happy with my battery life!
I am sticking with MikG over CM7...I have too many issues with CM7 and there just isn't enough to keep me there. I was going to write up a huge post about that now.
yea i actually did wipe that stats. Ill probably just do a full wipe and start fresh with sense rom and see where it goes. What are some advantages of mikG any features that make it special over others? What version of sense does it have? Im downloading right now. is there a info page of what all it includes? i couldn't find much info for it.

Im in the same boat some what, but I will say your time should be better with no use. Im not getting huge battery increases with aosp roms when using the phone. Im better off with the stuff that worked well on sense roms for me with no tinkering (gps, slow sd speeds, updating prls, etc)
Im convinced the people that claim these lengthy phone hours dont use their phone besides texting much even if they say otherwise. Most screen shots I see rarely even have voice calls registering. I think the best way for "me" to get a full day is to buy an extended battery. Im not on wifi all day, Im in and out of low signal areas. I need to keep data on due to emails for work. Maybe Ill run into a miracle rom and kernel, lol
I do like the classic rom which I backed up and I will try some others today (fusion/hyrbid ex1)

I totally agree with you with is why if you watch my second video posted above, I actually go into the usage screen and tap on the things to show what I am using. 50 minutes of voice calls, 25 minutes of words with friends, 41 minutes of GPS, Bluetooth on 100% of the time, etc.
But typically when I see those you tube videos I see people saying they were using their phone heavily and got 25 hours out of it. If you look closely in their battery stats screen though, you'll see that cell standby was the top battery user. That refutes the heavy usage claim right there!

I put FreshEvo and it looks like battery is holding up well. I got MikG tp play around with..(it does look beautiful). A few quick question about it.
1. Does it have the native hotspot app unlocked or just wireless tether?
2. Has CarrierID been removed or disabled?
3. Should I use the default kernel in the rom, or is there a particular one you use.
Thanks,

Great! I have found MikG to be awesome so I'm glad it works for you too. If you want to upload a screenshot then tap the power button and quickly hit home. It should take a screenshot. Then if you want to share it you can go the gallery app and tap the share icon (circle with 2 arrows). If you want to attach it to a post here from your phone (xda app) then start a message and then tap the more button. You should be able to attach something from the gallery.

Senseless MikG 2.9 has gotten me over 2 days of moderate usage consistently. This however does not include 4G since I can't get a signal anywhere >_<
I use CM7.1 + SavagedZen (latest) SBC (BFS) and get between 40 and 60 hours depending on usage.
I am also using the Sprint extended battery, however. By my estimation, this accounts for roughly 8 - 10 of those hours.
The kernel made a HUGE difference. Tiamat 3.3.7 was only getting me about 20 hours tops.
Phone is also undervolted, and supercharged. No overclocking or underclocking. I am incredibly pleased with this phone - definitely can't switch phones unless I know that I can get something remotely close in terms of battery life!

Hello people,
Here are some screenshots from the Official Gingerbread 2.3.4 update for Milestone 2. I can say that i tested all the custom roms (CM7, CM9, MIUI), but this Official Gingerbread is by far the most stable, fast and responsive from all (720p also working fine). It is true that after you install it you cannot install another custom rom, but for me that was the best option.
I like the custom roms, the only problem is the recording in 720p ..
now custom rom based on ch gb kernel will work on uk kernel too.
Most stable? Maybe. Most responsive? Maybe. Fastest? Definitely not! I don't want to flame, I just don't want to see some begginers confused by your post. Also it can be faster, because of that >$>$€[ blur thing, which consume both CPU and RAM resources...
And why people are using custom roms? Not because of stability, not because of hw compatibility, but mainly because of really good functions and speed!
But it is matter of choice of course.
Guess you didn't use the new official Gingerbread yet.
Let me tell you one thing: it is DEFINITELY faster. It doesn't use a lot of resources: all com.motorola processes together use about 24Mb on my device. For comparison: SwiftKey uses about 18Mb of RAM.
Does it use more CPU cycles? Only when you tell it to. By default you must choose Blur to be active on a mobile connection. If you don't, it simply doesn't do a thing. And I can tell you, I have it enabled and it certainly doesn't hit my battery life as bad as the Froyo ROM did: I still manage to get about 48 hours of battery life.
So if you don't want to flame, please get the facts right! Stock Gingerbread is perfect for beginners. Should you use CM7 if you want more power? Of course. But don't tell Blur is **** and only uses resources.
I use 2.3.4 official GB ROM on my MS2 too and must say: I like it. I used CM7 before and several issues and everytime the upgrading...
So my MS2 is fast and really good. I don't use Blur so it's fast and 48h battery life is normal (again)
@all other 2.3.4 GB users:
have you found the additional programs: Settings -> applications -> manage applications -> all ? (HipHopOfficial, Revolver TV, Rock on Altitude, True Country, Video Editor Lite)
There are really interessting things, but I can't find a way to start them. I never installed them and did a complete wipe before installation without a restore. So they are not left others from previous trys.
I used all Custom roms available on this forum, and yesterday I installed the new UK GB SBF.
I must say I'm impressed, but still miss some tweeks on it.
It is indeed faster, stabler and smoother than other roms.
What I really miss is being able to control the media player on the lock screen, and the widgets in the notification bar to control wifi, screen brightness, call volume, etc...
At the same time, all this can be solved with 3rd party apps, so I do not see any problems with it yet.
Since I always recharge batery at night, I can only say that I can use it all day long and still have some batery left.
I like CM7 a lot, but I am not regretting one bit about not being able to use CM again...
They have been there since forever
You can access them in Connected Music Player: Go to video's and select GoTV Channels and there they are.
The Video Editor Lite can be accessed via the Gallery. When you have a video, you can edit it and it will open Video Editor Lite. It's the same way Blur has a photo editor It can also be accessed from the Gallery by choosing to edit a photo.

The music control on the lock screen is indeed a function I miss as well, since the CH version got it. But well, for now I can live with it

I've charged my phone today. Right now it's discharging for 5 hours and it's still at 90%. I didn't note I've got the extended battery.
My settings are WiFi and 3G on, automatic brightness and sync on. From those 5 hours 58% was used by the display because I was chatting.

I never knew such a thing existed.
What is its capacity in mAh? And does it charge okay inside MS2?
It's 1820mAh, and it's an official extended battery for the Milestone 1/2 & Droid 1/2 by Motorola. You do need to buy an new battery.

So it fits in just fine inside MS2. What about the mV you get on this? I'm guessing it will be related to the size of the battery and should be more.
Edit: I just found out that it comes with a new back cover too.
hey, how can i install it? im from Argentina, and now im in CM7. What can i do? Thanks
It is a pity that there is no way miui room on this firmware ...(((
Hi,
I'm from Malaysia with a UK set Milestone 2. I received the 2.3.4 update on Nov 2011..and i kinda agree that the new 2.3.4 is more stable and fast than the stock Froyo. And the UI is better too. However like many others i faced the battery problem which drained and with my frequent used i can only get around 6 hours of usage.
Currently i using a Custom ROM from Nightly with ICS theme and i must say, my battery life improve. With my frequent usage now i manage to get 7-9 hours of battery life and with less usage i mange to get around 13 hours..
Nevertheless, the 2.3.4 update for Milestone 2 is still the best if u using stock ROM and i'm glad that motorola do that.
Thanks Motorola..
