dell streak and windows mobile - Streak 5 General

excuse me for my question i'm really a newbye.
is it possible a dual boot for the streak with windows mobile or windows 7 and android ?
or the dell streak with windows mobile only?
I ask this, because it's possible the contrary for example htc hd2 with dual boot or with the rom android.
Thanks.

I don't think so and why will you do that? it's like installing windows 95 on a core i7.
I was a winmo user for a long time and the only thing that will get me back to it is Garmin XT but it is not worth it.
anyhow I beleive you need a hacked bootloader, so you can have a nice fancy menu for dual boot, but I doubt any devs here would like to drop WinMo at the streak. since we just had a release of Vanilla Froyo.

I'm ok with you regarding wm6.5 but Wm7 could be fun on it. It's being able to have the choice that make a piece of technology powerfull

Windows Mobile 7 is hardly anything like Windows 95 when compared to Android. Yes, I'm a former WinMo user happy with my Android device (HTC Desire) but that doesn't mean Windows 7 is in any way comparable to WinMo 6.x. Microsoft completely rewrote the OS, from the ground up, to run on these types of devices. I haven't had a chance to play with it but it looks to be a much more polished system that WM6.x ever was.

Actually the device will be very decent with 2 GB ROM - WinMo+Android+Lots off stuff installed on nand...

I'll be interested in that also. Win 7 interests me especially if they get the communication agrigation right as they claim.
I love Android because its open.......well kinda open.....carriers have spoilt that a bit

yes, so am I, because I feel better with tomtom and there's no android version,
so co-pilot , perhaps igo are compatible with it.

Oh yeah, one thing I tottaly forgot, winmo has a LOT of medical market and propietary jobs... here in my country the police uses winmo to check your id's and stuff. so I guess it's not a bad idea... but I can't imagine a police guy with a streak. Now a little off topic but there is a QIGI with 5 inch screen and WinMo 6.5 If you wanna look at it here it is

enjoy!

I really hope we'll see dual boot Android and WP7 on the Streak

bump!!! Bump!!! BUMP!!! BUMPPPPPP!!!!!!!

I would seriously love to see WM7 boot up on the Streak. There HAS to be a possible way to make this happen.

Wouldn't mind seeing this myself

Would be awesome to have 7 on the streak but for some reason I would prefer 6.5
Sent from my Dell Streak using XDA App

+1 on the 6.5. Although thats not fair since I haven't used WP7 yet.
hey...remember the old HTC Shift Tablet? that dual booted 6.5 and Vista...I'd imagine the Streak could pull a dual boot of WP7 and Android.

Omg yes, that shift tablet is sick! Found one at a local cell phone store. Would have got it but not willing to shell out the 1000 they were asking for. For me I have used 7 its nice but lots of things were missing that 6.5 had like a file explorer and the wifi hotspot thing.

Android is quite awesome and all, but I dont leave my HD2 home. iGO8 and Office Mobile have yet to be topped. In all honesty though, just give me 2.3 for the Streak.

i dont actually see anything that i would want from windows mobile on my android phone. i think windows phone 7 would be easier to get on the device but theres even less i would want from that. maybe im just a fan of googles services and dont care much for the metro interface.

Yep I was a die-hard winmo user and had no idea what I was missing in the android world. Android is so smooth, no sticky screens, stopped processing and hangups like I was used to in winmo.
No dual boot for me. Android is cool !

Windows Mobile 7

Will the Xperia be compatible with WM7 when it comes out?
Simple short question, but i am anxious to know.
Short answwer? Nobody knows, but probabl will be ported. Certainly not be official upgrade, but if they are able to put Linux on Experia, just couse it uses same processor arhitecture, that i am 99% sure they will port Windows 7 as well.
It is becomming more prety much like on desktop you can put Windows 7 on computer that came with Vista preinstaled right?
Windows Mobile 7 isn't the same thing a Windows Mobile 7. I am quite sure a version of WinMo7 will come out for the XPERIA when a beta version is available. There isn't a lot of new features in WinMo7 that I know of so for now I will use 6.1.

So I take back that statement. Screens look awesome.
Those pictures aren't official. Why are you guys making assumptions?
Well you can be sure WInMo 7 will have EVERYTHING rewritten. Every menu, SMS sending everything, no more ugly menus, so it is not that much abaut features iPhone has less of them for example. But if you will be moving through setting or stuff anywhere you won't see one single resemblance to WInMo 6. It will be like TF3D would be made to completly remove any WInMo 6 stuff there is, just different, so WinMo 7 is bringing buty to Windows Mobile, somthing that has been neglected from winmo 1 to 6. And a little tweaked for 6.5.

Windows Mobile 6.5 on Aria?? - Resurrected December 26, 2010

Does anyone know if it is possible to install Windows Mobile 6.5 (from the Aria's brother, the HTC Mini). I want to buy an Aria--but if it can not upgrade to Andriod 2.2 with more Bluetooth calling functionality, I actually prefer Windows Mobile with Microsoft's Voice Command.
This topic died, but I want to resurrect it.
In response to those that asked if I am crazy, of course I am. But that is not why I wanted to run WM 6.5.x on the Aria. Here are my reasons:
1) The HTC HD Mini (an Aria running WM 6.5) has 900 and 2100 for HSDPA bands. I am on AT&T which uses the 850 and 1900 bands for HSDPA. So I can’t get a high speed connection on the Mini. But the Aria has the AT&T bands.
2) Android is fine, but I prefer WM (no, this is not crazy). I want WM 6.5.x because I am hooked on having the ability to effectively use voice dialing with 2,000+ contacts, having my callers name announced, having my appointments read, and having email sender and subject read (if I want), all over the phone speaker OR Bluetooth earpiece. Tried Android, and it can’t do any of that.
3) I want to easily sync my phone calendar, contacts, tasks, notes, and favorites directly with my PC and my laptop, ActiveSync does it perfectly—Android does not.
Does anyone know how to install WM 6.5.x on the Aria? Any ideas? Thanks.
It can be upgraded to Froyo and I'd expect it to be later this year.

Why? What do we expect in AT&T's version of Froyo that we aren't getting now?
The main question is still being leaved unanswered: It is never possible to install WM on an Android phone.
Im suprised that people want windows mobile on android phones. The only thing i really like about windows mobile is MS Office. But honestly, there is little to no chance of ever getting windows mobile on an android device.

Why is this. What is there to keep WM from working on the HTC Aria. I am not a programer and I shure do not understand the innerworking of cell phone operating systems. I own several HD2 phones and found it to be very simple to install cooked roms. I have spent the past two days reading through the forums on the Aria and am not any closer to understanding what is needed to be done to get there. Anyway, It would be nice to see WM working on the Aria.
The aria is just a hd mini with android you want winmo get hd mini check the specs they are pretty much identical
Um im not 100% sure on this
But i believe the bootloaders are different for windows mobile and android phones. There phones are also partitioned differently and just because the phones have identical specs doesn't mean it uses identical components and drivers. I.e. the wifi chip could be a different type, the speakers might be different, you would have to find the correct drivers, IF it were even possible to use the bootloader to boot windows mobile. Its not as simple as flashing an htc hd mini rom to an aria because the phones look the same. But if you really want windows mobile so bad, id say just buy a windows mobile phone.

I could be wrong as I am not a cook but from what I understand;
Android seems to work well at adapting to different operating environments. The core is just more versatile than WinMo. A lot of that comes from the more open development environment of Linux and proprietary nature of Microsoft. Android is made to just work unlike Microsoft's archaic mobile platform.
I think of it like this;
Android(Linux) = Nails, They will simply drive into nearly anything and function.
Windows = Screws, Things have to line up perfectly, you usually have to pre-drill, and it takes a lot of twisting.
There seems to be enough failed WM phones out there anyway. I hate to see someone take a functional phone and cripple it. My old tilt went through maybe 15 different WM ROMs and none of them worked as smoothly as Android.

That's an awesome analogy, I'm gonna have to use it sometime.
I know the HD2 guys are porting Android over to their WM phones. This is the first time I've heard of anyone wanting to go the other way though.
It seems most of the discussion is Android vs. WM, but I think some people just want to know if it's possible to put WM on an Android device.
In all likelihood it probably is though with limited functionality. However there aren't many, if any, devs that are interested in trying to get it to work. For the most part Android has taken over the crown for people who want to tinker with their phone. Even while I had a WM phone it was obvious most of the devs were moving to Android phones, or just porting Android to the WM devices. If you really want WM the easiest way is probably to just get a WM phone, or you'll probably have to do your own work in trying to port.

dell streak running wp7. is it possible?

hi all
i am a complete technology newbie. i would like to know if its possible to port the developer build/final build (i know its not available yet) of windows phone 7 on dell streak? i am sure streak meets all the hardware requirements. i just want to know if its possible at least in theory?
I have fallen in love with dell streak but i dont like android that much. i would be on top of the world if dell streak could run windows phone 7 as i believe it is the OS of the century!!
are you for real?
from what ive seen of wp7 it looks like a really boring OS. blank screen with text....yawn.
yes the streak is awesome, yes it does suck having 1.6 on it but once the updates or hackers start messing about its going to rule.
i do have to agree, why would you want to? the hardware isnt supported anyways. i want is htc sense. still android! but prettier.
Not going to happen I'm afraid!
People managed to get windows 98 running on the Nexus One (although it was pretty pointless; no wifi drivers, no double click, no right click, no click and drag, etc.)
I'd rather get XP running on the Dell than WM7 anyday
I would definately be up for WP7 on the Streak!

thanx vinokirk!! i almost got blasted for asking that question.
I would be an interesting challenge, I too am intrigued by WP7.
Android is growing on me, but it feels half baked at times, too reliant on 3rd party apps for the best experience. Maybe 2.2 will sort allot of that.

Hopefully the streak will get WP7 through some hacking to get it working. WP7 may look boring to some, but I think it looks amazing. Also, since it supports XNA its going to have some amazing games on it.
As much as I like android, its just not very polished.

wm7 will be out in October i have just read and there will be loads of devices that are running it so i don't see the point of putting it on this device, it was built for android, just buy a wm7 tablet i know of 4 manufacturer's that have said they will be building a wm7 tablet/phone
I doubt any will be a 5" device. Plus, its fun hacking phones and putting new OS's on.

exactly!! i can put dell streak into my pocket but a 7 inch tablet or larger is not pocketable and all i hear is that wp7 tablets will all be 7 inch or more...no rumour or anything of that sort on a 5inch device running wp7..
moreover, i just love the design of dell streak and would love to have a polished OS running on it.
who would actually prefer this over android...it seems cool but it would probably get boring after 2 or three weeks
is this convosation still going on.

WP7? Another dumbed down iphonesque straight jacket OS, more Apple than even IOS? With no flash, no multitasking, and minimum possibilities for personalization? I personally really don't care for any operating system that assumes I am too dumb to use a phone and that I have to do everything just the way big Daddy wants me to or I will mess it up.

i think thats wrong. android is NOT an app running in windows mobile. this would mean android is runnning as some kind of emulation. as far as i know, winmo is still needed in order to initialize the hardware. by starting haret.exe, the wince-kernel is shut down and a linux bootloader is started.
hopefully we'll be able to flash an android rom to nand and have a device which can hold either OS equally. I personally like the fact that the HD2 can become versatile. I agree - that if someone wants to run android only, he should buy an Android device. I wanted to have a taste of android with the ability to run WM as i have for the past 4 years.

Can some one answer this question. What windows mobile 6.5 do, that android can't do? This is my first WM phone and I tho it was alright. I would of got the Evo but I can't switch carriers until the end of the year. Since now we got android, I'm staying with t-mo. I pay full price for this phone ($560.00 in NYC) I first regretted and since android I don't. Anyways I found that android do much more for me than WM. So if I'm wrong please some one tell me. Ps: excuse my english.

For me, I would consider the NAND flash for Android ROM the 100% fully functional since that is of primary importance to me here.
I bought my HD2 even though I knew it had WM. And at the time I didn't want Android at all, just my WM, but with some configurations & such.
But now that I have Android running on it instead, I never want to go back.
And just like someone else said, there ain't an Android phone around that have the same hardware specs as the HD2. Except the EVO, but I've had my phone a long time before they released the EVO. And from what I know it's only available in the US. Maybe I could import one and configure it to run on Swedish networks, but wth..
The wife and I got this phone and she didn't realize it was Windows Mobile. This was my first experience with Sense UI and thought it was awesome.
I loved the phone for what it could do and actually "Used" it to it's potential. She "HATES" it. Then again, I don't blame her. Sense fails hard when it comes to texting and load lag
She can't wait till I can flash Android to her phone. Me, i'll stick with my options.

I don't think people who HATE WinMo buy this phone with the sole intent of putting another OS on it. I think most people bought it for the screen & the media capabilities. For me, I saw a lot of potential in the hardware specs and bought mine cause it's the last real WM phone(I'm sappy like that) and because it's a GSM phone that I can unlock & use for years to come. It was like buying a barebones PC that I could run whatever I want on & have multi-boot systems.
I decided to run Android on it initially out of sheer curiosity, and so I can learn the next OS I'm gonna be using. When WM dies out(it's GOING to happen, so we may as well face it), Android will be what I will move on to partly because its Linux & open source, and partly because there's no way in pus-spewing, blood-gutted hell that I would ever use an iPhone or Blackberry(WP7 has NEVER been an option). I must say, Android runs VERY well on this phone even in its current stage of development, I can't wait to see how awesome it'll be as a fully flashable rom. I'm already almost to the point of not even missing WM anymore. I've been running it for a week now & I'm getting to know how everything works & I love it. Very versatile & powerful, and quite stable. I don't think I quite realized just how many lockups and crashes I was really having with WM until I started using Android as my main OS. The first time I used Android I HATED it because I had a bad build & an underpowered phone(One of the first leaked Froyo builds on a Sprint Hero) and it ran like crap. But with the combo I've got now, it's simply awesome. Everything is so integrated & all the programs mesh together so beautifully. It really does 'just work', and it's hackable & customizable at the same time. Best of both worlds. If & when a NAND version of Android for the HD2 comes out, you can count me in.
Don't get me wrong, I will ALWAYS love WinMo. I think it's the best mobile OS there ever was, and it's incredibly sad that it's dying. It would still be going strong if Microsoft had just marketed it better & hadn't copped out with WP7. But I'm not gonna stay with a stagnant platform that nobody develops for anymore(I'd have stayed with Palm OS otherwise), and I was honestly starting to get bored with it. I had pushed WM to it's limits & did everything I could possibly do with it, and it's just time to move on. I believe Android is the wave of the future, and will eventually overtake the iPhone in popularity.
Plus I love robots, so anything named 'Android' is automatically cool in my book
I agree with you wholeheartedly. Friendly robots are a plus in my book.

Windows phone 7? No
Windows 7 (OS)? No.
The elfs processor is 1/5th of the reqired CPU usage for a start, and wasn't even meant to run winmo 6.5.

elfin has only a doubled rom/ram difference, cpu is the same. besides, not that a slight difference would work
what about eclair or froyo?
does someone have cab for that?
The answer is still no. There is only android1.6 donut for the elf/elfin. Wing Linux have done a great job getting it to the state that it is in at the moment. If you want a phone that is going to run android fully then just get an android phone. The elf is a very old device now when you consider the changes to mobile phones in the last year alone.
I'm sorry to be so blunt but I don't think it will happen. And even if it does it will be very slow and you'll probably end up with a negative impression of android or winphone 7 and not want to use it. You.can get early android phones for relatively cheap now. Look at the Hero, massive.community, but again, people are moving to faster devices already.

Saying that though, there is no.reason that you can't offer a helping hand to get eclair or group ported. Wing Linux will probably welcome the help.
