What is the fastest, quickest, speediest way to search for a contact? with or without an application
the universal search app. part of donut 1.6 and included with cyanogenmod experimental.
you mean the hardware search button? that just searches online, unless I first open contacts and then use it. Can I get a shortcut to directly search contacts?
no, the universal search app. it behaves in a similar manner to spotlight on OSX - searches your handset for contacts, web history, music etc. The results of which appear directly beneath the search bar.
ok, don't think I have that, in the 'about phone' section is says firmware 1.5. How can I upgrade to 1.6? I have a vodafone magic so not sure if that's possible. Or is there another way to get the app? There seem to be plenty of search apps on the market but don't think any of them are what you are describing
to get it you will need to flash CyanogenMod ROM
Oh ok, will look for an app that can do a similar job, as I can't be bothered to erase and reinstall everything. Thanks.
You Don;t have to.............

Download "aurora" Free off the android Market , its exactly the same as the universal search and to top it off it was actually made by a Dev on this forum. You'll see the thread in the Dream forum if you wish to have a look at the dev
Enjoy

actually downloaded it a few mins ago, brilliant app, just what I wanted and more!
My Hong Kong service provider, CSL, who supplied my HD2, has messed with the Opera and ie apps. They've put in a bar at the top advertising their own website, MyNet, and I can't see how to get rid of it. It takes up about 25% of the screen real estate. Any ideas how they did it and how to get rid of it?

I'd recommend flashing the 1.48 ROM to get rid of that. You'll need to read about Goldcard, but it's currently free, and will allow you install an official HTC ROM.
Goldcard stuff is here...

The official ROM thread is here...

I expect you'll have plenty of questions about this process. Don't be afraid to ask the guys in those threads for help. Just make sure you've read all the posts first, as there's lots of help already out there.
Good luck
This sounds like the same irritating CSL MyNet "service" they tried to provide to me.
If it's the same thing then it's easy to disable.
In addition to the MyNet tab there are two other tabs to the right. The 3rd is "Customer Service". Near the bottom of this tab is a section for "1O1O MyNet setting" which provides an option to disable MyNet toolbar. After you do this you will then get a warning about having to pay for data accessed outside "MyNet" but I think this is nothing special as presumably you have some data plan already. The warning only comes up at the time when you disable the "service".
I don't know whether this is just a coincidence, but once this toolbar was disabled I found that Opera's zoom (which had stopped working properly sometime around when MyNet toolbar first appeared) was working properly again.
BTW I can't see how to re-enable it once it is disabled. (Not that I want to do so, it's just my nature to want to know how to reverse whatever changes I make ...)
I own a HTC Hero (in the guise of the Tmobile G2) running stock updated everything.
My issue is relating to a specific program called "calorie counter".
I am not able to download this program no matter how i try, in fact whenever i search for it or link to it via barcode, it just pretends that it doesn't exist.
Now i am aware that this suggests compatability issues, for instance i cannot find google goggles either due to its lack of backwards compatability with android 1.5. So you'd think this was the same......however, my friend who has a HTC Hero on Orange, running stock roms, can find and download the program no problems....go figure
leaves me confused
are market apps restricted by carrier?
thanks
Hi everyone
I just got myself an i337, liking it so far.
Only problem is- i can't use wifi hotspot, which sucks.
I am not on AT&T, nor do i live in the U.S, and my carrier allows tethering free without limitations
The problem is that the phone for some reason blocks the option. I searched around and saw something similar was on the i747 at the time, and there was a fix. (didn't find anything about the 337 though, i read the noob helper thread and searched for quite some time before opening the thread)
Is there a fix for the stock i337 AT&T rom? i like touchwiz and do not want to move to AOSP/AOKP etc, my phone is rooted and i cleaned AT&T's crap off it.
Is there any fix, or a rom very close to stock (dosn't matter if it's i337 stock or i9505 stock as long as everything works) that does give the option to use the wifi hotspot?
Any answers appreciated, thanks.

As long as you're rooted, there is a fix which involves replacing the TetheringProvision APK (I'm not sure if this only applies for AT&T users or not). You can give it a shot, half link since I can't post real ones yet:
galaxys4root dot com/galaxy-s4-tutorials/how-to-wifi-tether-att-galaxy-s4-sgh-i337/
I used the terminal to do it instead of Script Manager, if you don't want to get a new app.
You can use es file explorer, just go to settings>tools>net manager and enable hotspot (in es file explorer) pretty sure you domt even need root...but I think the may have patched it in MF3 (latest software) not sure...
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337 using Tapatalk 2
I am running the stock MF3 rom, but not the MF3 bootloaders/recovery. I found that many of the tethering methods broke, because any method that tries to forcefully enable the native tethering ability will be detected by TetheringProvision and it will try to call out to AT&T to check to see if you have the plan. Some people are reporting that if you simply keep trying repeatedly, it will eventually skip the checking part, and turn on the tethering anyway. This of course doesn't work straight from the Settings page, though.
Here's what I do, detailed in a very long-winded bulleted list:
Installed this app. It's free and very easy to use. You touch the icon for it, and it attempts to start the tethering service. However, don't try it just yet, because it will still call out to TetheringProvision.
Disable TetheringProvision. You can freeze it in Titanium Backup, or you can simply run these commands in a terminal emulator or via ADB Shell:
Code:
[B]su[/B]
pm disable com.sec.tetheringprovision
If you ever try to enable tethering through the system Settings, you'll find that Settings will force-close on you. This is because Settings is trying to call out to TetheringProvision, and it flips out. No harm done. You can still enter the settings area for it and adjust your hotspot settings (i.e. WPA, SSID...). Just avoid that ON/OFF button.
Once you have your settings set, fire up that tethering app. It will also force-close the Settings.
The first time you run the app, it might still prompt you for WPA settings. Adjust if needed.
The tethering probably won't start and work the first time. Try it again. In fact, you may have to try a few times each time to get it to work. Occasionally you'll get an ad from the tethering app upon loading it, but otherwise I've not seen any other ads from it. I might eventually upgrade to the Pro version for $0.99 to eliminate the ads, but I'm really just lazy.
If you see the little blue icon in the notification area, you're set.
Enjoy.
Holy hell, that is a LOT of work for a hotspot, is there some kind of rom i can use instead? (touchwiz, no vanilla/aokp etc.)
I'm not on MF3 btw,

OH!
In that case, just download that app I linked to you, and use it normally. Also, the ES File Explorer one works too, apparently.
Also, you should get the update to MDL at some point, and then disable updates from happening so that you'll never get MF3.

There are several options. You need to search (or just look) through the development section and see if the (near or close to stock) ROMs list tethering in the OPs. You could also use Nottach X-posed (also located in the development section), it offers several mods including tethering. Personally, I use P-ROM, again by Nottach. It offers a modified framework that stays completely stock yet has built in changes, such as tethering. All of this is located in the "development" section. Alternatively, you can use one of the many apps that allow for tethering. Searching through the AT&T S4 forums should get you several threads that list what these apps are and how they work. Good luck and read all the information about whatever you decide to do before you do it.
I read the blog post on XDA about getting rid of Google on an android phone.
http://www.xda-developers.com/setting-up-android-marshmallow-without-google/#comment
It started with install TWRP. I know what it is, but just had a problem with it on a Nexus 4 running CM 10. I could not get to it through recovery. Finally had to install Clockwork Mod, and that got me to where I needed to go to put 12.1 on the Nexus. I had gotten both from Play. Is there a better download for TWRP elsewhere? and a good wiki? (I do read everything)
I've had problems with Play, I have an Oppo and Google told me some of my apps would not run. BULL! i repurchased from Amazon and they ran just fine. Google has also insisted that some of my wifi only tablets belonged to my carrier.
I can't get Carbon to run - tried everything possible and no joy. Can TWRP run a backup if you aren't rooted? I didn't root the Oppo. You could turn everything off so rooting was not necessary.
I've ordered the Moto X Pure, and since I don't use Google for anything except apps, I have no contacts, sms or other goodies stored there.
I don't want to, either. There's other cloud services besides Google. I also have friends that despise Google. They buy a phone and only use what the carrier offers. They just leave phone stock and don't want their names in Google's database via emails. The carriers update the phones. I also don't use Gmail. The account is mostly just to give out to spammers and to buy apps.
If I'm paying for a private mail service, I don't see why Google should get the info.
I'm concerned about the contact list.
Will TWRP help? and which 3rd party is best?
Thanks
I use a fairly fast phone for certain apps. All are reference and I like having them on the phone. All my info is at my fingertips. These apps will not run on anything but a smart phone. I also always buy unlocked phones. TMO is switching bands and the Oppo doesn't have the newer ones that I want to try.
I'd prefer to give the phone a chance, but if I get too annoyed, I'll root it.
I see the info here has improved - it's no longer in phone shorthand where you have to look up all the shortcuts.
