So we know about the major changes in donut (Market, search, new widgets, voice) but what are some of the things you've seen that haven't been covered yet? One thing I saw that really excited me was finally having the ability to clear the data from the maps application. Everytime I used it it would increase in size and the only way to clear the data was to uninstall and reinstall. Now I can just click clear data from within the settings app and be done with it. I also noticed that the 15% warning has a button for ok and a button to take you to the battery consumption meter thing so you can see what has been using the most battery.
The phone seems to be running quicker, lower cpu usage (even running openhome with 5 screens filled with mostly widgets). The battery SEEMS to last longer. I pulled 9 hours out of it before it got to 15% (and that was with playing with the new OS). And the new camera app is ALOT faster than the old one, both taking the picture and saving the picture. AHHH....I almost forgot that in the picture app if you go and look at the pic that you took and press menu>more there is an option to show on maps. This takes you to the google maps app and puts a dot where you took the picture (or the general vicinity if you are using triangulation). So far I have seen alot of new things thrown in. Pretty good for a phone that was reported to not be able to handle the update.
Has anyone else noticed anything new or interesting?
Okay, I'm sure a bunch of people have been having problems with their froyo upgrades... But I have had nothing short of an amazing day with my first 24 hours of Froyo on the Epic. So I am making this thread so we can highlight the POSITIVE changes that froyo has brought us Epic owners.
I have discovered a few cool things that Froyo brings, and I am sure there are more. Let's get a list compiled of all the positives:
What I have discovered so far:
1) Battery life ( see attached photo) - it is so much better than 2.1. I can't believe it's the same phone, battery!
2) The screen rotates left or right now into landscape mode. I was always astonished on 2.1 that it didn't do that.
3) Apps 2 SD. Long talked about, but awesome when it's finally here. I have a bunch of apps and I have 390Mb open on my phone. My wife has 412Mb open on her Epic. #4 is helped by this
4) The phone runs smoother. Of course Linpack scores of 13.92 prove it, but I haven't had any screen lag or lag when opening the app drawer or in typical use the way my Epic got laggy on 2.1 before. Apps 2 SD definitely helps clear up phone memory for every day use.
5) Colorized menus. It may seem trivial, but now I realize just how drab the menus were previously. The icons 'pop' with the color added to them.
6) Separate Sound and Display options in the settings menu.
7) Flash. 'nuf said on that one! Huge improvement over 2.1.
8) Improved Gmail and Youtube.
*the rest will be either new finds by me, or contributions w/ credit.
9) Pinch whatever home screen you are on to reveal all home screens. (thanks styckx)
10) I just discovered that we finally have copy/paste options of text that WE choose! When you are in a field where you have been typing and you click in that field, you get a blue slider button. You can slide that button to whatever starting point you want in your text, and then you can choose to edit and you can highlight, copy, paste, etc only the portions of text you want, not just a copy all option like before! This is a huge improvement over 2.1. Text select was the only thing I missed from my Blackberry, and now we have that too. Not in all situations, but at least it makes editing your current text so much easier.
11) I read it somewhere else before, but just verified it works. If you swipe to the right on a contact in your messages list, it automatically calls them. If you swipe to the left, it automatically starts you up for a text reply. Genius!
12) Robust stock audio player with tons more features. (thanks again styckx)
Okay, I know I am missing things that even I have already discovered and don't remember. 2.2 seems a lot more than a .x update. It's not just 1 or 2 minor tweaks like we have seen previously. Please post anything you have noticed about Froyo that adds to the Epic experience!
* I know there are some things about it people don't like. I am unable to swipe on the notification bar to increase/decrease brightness. I really enjoyed that feature. Feel free to post what you don't like about Froyo also. But I would like to concentrate on tips, tricks, improvements, etc. that Froyo has brought us!
Pinch your home screen
As great as froyo is, there are a lot of probs with it.
Random services keep appearing.
Samsung widgets disappear occasionally
Wifi not working at times (not sure if that's my connection)
Idk, I'm just curious, what measures are you taking on battery life?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
About all the bad I've noticed with the latest DK28 build is the auto-rotate is REALLY slow, and it doesn't seem to auto-rotate when on the main screen (only seems to rotate when I am in the "settings" menu). I had some odd issues with DK17 where it didn't like to delete messages from my Activesync accoutn that appears to be fixed in DK28.

I have been on wi-fi since last night. Not a single issue for me regarding that. Yet. So it may be your wi-fi.
As far as battery goes, I am straight stock everything, no battery juice defender sipper type apps or anything. Just rooted, with no Sprint apps. Nothing special.

I am getting the auto-rotate to work both ways on the home screens, and it takes maybe .2 seconds to do it. Maybe try and wipe and re-flash? Just a suggestion.
I am getting lag at random times. Sometimes the phone will just freeze for like 30 seconds as launcherpro slowly crashes. Rotation is slow, 5 seconds i mean come on. Wifi has been weirdish, might have fixed itself. So far, no where NEAR as smooth as stock DI18. Eclair on the epic was AMAZINGLY smooth and polished.
I like the new features, but there is no way that DK28 is ready for primetime. They need to do a lot of bug fixing on this to make it anywhere near as smooth as other phones running 2.2 that I have seen.
Also, I installed it correctly and several different ways, so its not a bad flash. I am currently running Stock DK28 with root and clockworkmod that was ODIN flashed from stock DI18 which I ODIN flashed. GPS is working.
One thing I really like a lot is the new Audio player. EQ, Visualizer, audio "effects", much better navigating of albums and artists.
I mean, I own PowerAmp which is THE BEST audio player period, but the new default audio player is leaps and bounds better than the old one and is fantastic for default (free).

Agreed. The features are all here. Now it just needs to be polished and smoothed out like the original Eclair builds were.
Bluetooth dialing is busted. Media hub wants to upgrade, but there is no upgrade. On the plus, my gps works now. I don't care what anyone says. This is a beta for hardware level.4 phone to test. I think we will see a newer release pushed to our phones.
I'm just going to keep it. It's stable and usable enough until the real (and hopefully more refined and stable) release is sent.
I'm sick of flashing and restocking my phone. I'm thinking a upgrade from DK28 to the real release won't require the dreaded WIPE WIPE WIPE and a rube goldberg puzzle to get the GPS to work.
If for some stupid, company killing reason DK28 as it stands now really is going to be the official release, I will go back to 2.1 and stay there. We'll see.

Hey OP you might want to try that again because I'm on froyo and can still increase/decrease the brightness using the notification slide-bar technique. The bar may hide but if you move your finger left or right even when its already gone you should see the brightness change.
Mine doesn't change orientation either unless I'm in a program. If I'm in a program, it's instant pretty much..on the homescreen I've waited and the only way I can get it to change is by flipping open my keyboard.
All of this is overshadowed by my sd not working after the update there by rendering most apps useless

Seems to be working good for me so far. The only thing annoying thus far is the lag in bringing it from sleep with the power button. There's a second or 2 delay before the screen comes on after you hit power. In 2.1 it was nearly instantaneous.
Im not getting it to rotate to the right,

There is no Syndicate rom for DK28.
Thanks for the Post! Found some things I wasn't aware of.
I'm on this Stock Froyo Rom(DK17) and everything I've tried is working great. Notification Bar swipe for brightness works as well as Media Hub.

Although many great reports.. and some not so..
This is obviously NOT the final release. lets remember that..
It is so close now and will be great. (or better at least)
I myself tested on 3 diff phones, found recurring and non- recurring defects which point to the fact that this particular release in its entirety wont be pushed OTA to the masses.. it cant. wont handle the endless differences out in the wild..
And to be expected.. Exactly the reason why upgrades take time.
Hi Chaps,
I'm getting pretty fed up with crashes, performance and low space on my Orange Hero w/2.1, as well as still being miffed by Orange screwing up everything with their tinkering of 2.1, sooooo, I'm going to flash.
But, I need some help, 'cause I think I'm just getting too old for all this tinkering lark and I'm reading up on a lot of ROMS and just can't choose - I'm reading, but nothing is sinking in!
So, I like Sense, or at least I think I do. What I actually like is contacts / Facebook integration, 7 pages of home screen and the HTC weather clock and the weather animations when I unlock the phone. I like the threaded SMS.
I DON'T LIKE: Orange screwing up the speed dial widget, running out of space, the fact that the default camera apps photos have gone 'stripey' since 2.1, (other cam apps are fine). A lot of complete hangs and force closes, including lately, something.htc.bgp force closing several times a day.
I use GPS a lot (CoPilot, Cardio Trainer, Latitude, Maps) and listen to music. The std music player is average and slow, but has some good features (headphone out pause, album art, lock screen control).
So, a lot of requests there, but I think it boils down to me needing: performance, apps2SD and reliability, and compatibility with a wide range of apps. Root not essential, since I run all the apps I need to, but I guess it comes part and parcel with flashing a new ROM. I have already installed and rooted with universal Androot.
Any help for me?
Thanks,
Rich.
Hi there
If sense is a must, look at rcmix. 2.1 with sense.
If You would like to experiment a bit You can try some of the 2.2roms, ie floyo, villain 1.6 to name a few. But it is hard to find a good dialer, and Facebook integration is on much lower level than sense roms. They should be quicker, so depends on You hope this helps
Sent from my HTC Hero using XDA App
I'm not sure if Sense is a must actually... what does it give me? The 'skinned' buttons across the bottom of the screen i suppose (phone, apps and add), but there ae other apps that do this aren't there? (Launchers?). What else does sense actually do that I might miss if I don't have it?
Is Rcmix running android 2.1 as it's version number suggests? Is there nothing with 2.2 yet? I see Rcmix does appstoSD, and I think after the phone just running right, space is my next biggest issue, so I suppose it could keep me happy.
I extremely agree with you. You have just, like, took this out of my head and put it on the forums!
Except, for me, the most important thing is the facebook integration. Doesn't the actual Facebook app provide that outside of sense?
something.htc.bgp is the location service, I think. After that crashing, foursquare stops working properly. I can't live like this.
With the Facebook intergration, I just like the way my contacts show pics from Facebook, and I get the status updates from the contacts too.
I think I'm gonna try Cyanogen. It's the most popular, I don't think much can go wrong. Still, I'm massively scared, haha!
I agree RCMix along wit kimera2.1 are great choices wit flykernal 11c or bfs. Had both and rarely had issues. Biggest losses from not having sense is the weather clock and a decent dialer if u plan to try a 2.2 rom
This might seem biased, but if you try following the instructions from this thread you will end up with a very nice, speedy hero setup. It even has info in there of a very fast, usable dialler app, as well as an app to sync your facebook contact pics.
LauncherPro Plus has a Facebook stream widget built-in, and you can either use BeautifulWidgets or FancyWidget for the clock.
Should all be in the post! (Don't worry, it's not as complicated as it looks, and its a lot to read, but might be worth it for you).
Zeb
Well, I got Cyanogen Mod, and so far I'm very happy with it. Definitely will try out the widgets from above
Me too... went for Zebwen's suggestion above (Thanks!) and pretty happy with it. Took a bit of customisation to get it nice, but now I know how easy it is to flash, I'll probably try a few.
Am I right in thinking I can do as many Nandroid backups as I want, and later on, restore to any previous, full setup, including Apps and data?
Verified my own question on Nand backups.
I had a problem yesterday with the camera force closing... is this a known issue? Reboot seems to have cured it so far, but despite the rest of the ROM being fine, the camera does seem a bit 'iffy'. Exposure wouldn't adjust when using it with barcode scanner the other day.
I like many on here was very disappointed with the quality of the camera, but thanks to the excellent guide posted on here it improved it 10 fold, but i decided to give a camera app a try anyway and looking through "htc likes" apps on My phone stumbled onto an app called "camera360".. I thought i'd give it a try as it gives you a free trial version (limited to just the basics).. and after a while (getting used to the many many options) decided to buy it, this is the first app ive bought for my dhd.. only costs $3.99 (around £2.69).. it had a handy paypal link so no messing about with my credit card etc.. if you pay with paypal it instantly becomes the pro version (it did for me anyway). They also send you an email with the file and instructions to make it the full (pro) version in case you have to do it manually or reinstall it (after a factory reset etc).It also says it gives you free updates when they're released. It has anti shake, effects, HDR, and loads more options i haven't got a clue what they all do yet! lol. The only "problems" ive had with it is although i can take 8mp pics it doesnt like me trying to take 8mp widescreen ones, and the zoom is slightly less than the htc standard camera, these may be able to be fixed by someone with more knowledge on the camera side of things. I havent got round to posting any samples but hopefully with starting this thread other people using the app will be able to post images on here (as i am a total newbie)..There are sites that gives a brief review of it (including sample pictures of the various effects available) I am unable to post the link to the review sites (as its only my third or so post). just type "camera360" in your search engine and read up on it .Like i said it works great on my phone, give it a try.. if ya dont like it just uninstall it (you have nothing to lose after all)
I have also installed the free version of cam360 and its got a ton more options than the standard camera, I will ave to try and take some comparisons - although someone with some more advanced knowledge of cameras would be better. The annoyances with 360 is the dodgey English throughout and a quite complicated interface, still use the stock one for now, just because its faster to start up, and with the guide on xda its not too bad.
I might upgrade if I can tell there is a solid advantage over stock app.

I've tried this a few days ago but I don't like the way this app returns non-accurate colors.
Cheers from my DHD.
Camera360 is really good.
Can you guys enlighten me how bad the camera is. I thought it is clear enough.

I just tried several versions including the latest 1.3 version of Camera 360 Pro and there is NO ghost setting/effect, how or where do you get it from as it is not in the list...
Hi..the ghosting effect needs to be downloaded (free)..its an add on, i think its on the apps store.. it puts images of ghosts on the pic (they look like the girl from "the ring" series).. you really have to look to see her though, its quite good how they put it in the pic..it randomly places the image on the photo.

I have Camera360 on my DX, and the app doesn't seem to focus in either of the focal modes I choose. Anyone else have this problem? Is there another way to focus?
In manual focus mode, I'll press the button halfway for focus, like in the regular stock camera, and a message appears informing me that the shot is now in focus and to take the picture. Only, it didn't focus. When I load the stock camera, and hold halfway, I notice how it takes about a second or two to focus, and the shot is much clearer than the Camera360 app.
It's really frustrating since I paid money for this, and I like all the features, but it doesn't focus!
I must be doing something wrong.
----
Okay, I fixed my issue. All I needed to do was uninstall and reinstall the app. Once I did that, the camera focuses like it should.
I tried it but it keeps force closing, i think i will remove and download again. Just to try it.
Hi at all,
I am using a CarCamOne but would like to replace it with my android phone, as the quality is far better.
However, I don't know, if there is a suitable app: I need an app which captures what the camera sees (i.e. the street and the cars) while driving. It does not need to show it, but can run in the background, so that I can use GPS navigation at the same time.
It should be possible to specify a certain path in which the same video gets overwritten everytime I drive. Let's say I drive on January, 1st, so it save 010111.avi, then when I drive next time, it deletes this file and creates one of the specific date, so that I always have the latest drive on my sd card.
This whole thing is meant to be able to prove what happened when an accident has occured.
(I would also accept such a program for Windows Mobile, if there is none for Android.)
Thank you very much!
+1
Want this, too.
I'm driving a lot. German motorways are fast, idiots all around risk is high. There were certan situations in the past where an app like this would be very helpful for evidence.
Would be great if it will work automatically when car mode is detected by snapping the device in the car mount near the window.
I try to but can't remember ... I'm sure that I have seen similar feature in another camera app ... but sorry, memory has gone.
PS: would create finest youtube stuff, too
PPS: maybe something from here: http://www.androidzoom.com/android_applications/car video recorder "car accident recorder" or "video loop" ?
I tried "video loop" test app with 5 seconds restriction.
In car mode app the cam stood still and stuck.
When trying the programm as a normal application it creates files without file extension (like .mp4 or whatelse). Wondering why it's available in the market.
At myvideoloop.com there is a remark, that the android version is still under development. So, still searching.
Search the market for AutoGuard Blackbox. I haven't tried it, but it sounds like what you are looking for.

Thanks!
Seems to be pretty well with several options like limit by video size or limit by minutes and so on. Also video quality can be changed in several way.
When linked to the carmode-app it works in my private couch potato mode. Will test it soon while driving the next days.
Some features will work in the paid app only, but the free app should be enough for testing purpose. $1.89 / €1,39 if you wanna have all features. Cheap if it works.
( Can't imaging to use the collision detector. I will recognize an accident by myself - exploding cars are very loud. )
@lamajstro, sorry, for hijacking your thread. Hope it will help you, too.
Thank you all.
Stepsch, no problem at all. Could you please give a feedback to that program after having tested it? That would be great!
Thank you!
I humbly suggest my free app: DailyRoads Voyager. You can search for it on the Android Market. More info here: http://www.dailyroads.com/voyager.php
Video Road (http://www.androlib.com/android.application.com-androidlab-videoroad-qnEmF.aspx) also seems to have decent reviews...
I tested AutoGuard Blackbox for only few km until now.
It was working from a link in the car app as expected. I used the original shipped micro USB cable with a car charger, so the phone switched immediately to car mode. The app does what it says with standard settings. It feels a little bit ... how should I say ... cumbersome or sluggish. But this could be caused by my individual phone setup.
DailyRoads Voyager: installed only, but not tested in car so far. When using at home it feels a lil bit more lightweigt, fluently than AutoGuard.
Would be great to send the videos to an hoster of your choice. Until now it can be sent to Daily Roads Website. To be honest - I am lil bit to paranoid to send it over there, I also try not to use most social hubs.
Will take a look at Video Road too.
Testing those stuff creates lots of workload, as there are so much settings available for video quality and lots more. Won't be easy to get comparable results.
So, now I am with DailyRoads Voyager, which works well in the background.
Issues: GPS position is often incorrect and km/h is always zero or much to slow.
An additional running navi app was a little bit too much for the i9000, both app slightly stuck from time to time.
Glad to hear you made the wise choice
The GPS position and speed values depend on what the GPS sensor relays back to the apps. I don't do any calculations for speed, except the conversion from m/s (what Android provides) to km/h or mph.
I've noticed that the speed readings become more accurate when the number of visible satellites increases. In the next version of the app (1.6) I show the number of satellites, and filter out speed readings obtained with 4 or less satellites.
Beta versions of v.1.6 are currently in tests, and I expect to release it to the Android Market in about a week. Will post here when this happens.
Good news! Thx a lot! Looking forward your ping.
Speed is not so important while driving. Also the position is not sooo critical. But maybe it will be helpful in case of accident as evidence, when the videos have time stamp, defined position and correct speed - when one crashes in a gasoline truck.
Indeed, the GPS info is not always important. But, video evidence is, as explained in this recent TV news: "Victim uses smartphone app to record hit-and-run"

Man, you have *no* idea how much this app is going to help me out! *EXACTLY* what I'm looking for, thank you.
Anyone want to recommend a windshield mount?
I dont need the full blown N1 mount from google/htc, and a lot of the cheaper ones on ebay look like they would do the trick, but the bigger question is, if the mount will end up in the frame of what DRV is recording?
One prob is: most cheap mountings that I saw until now are somehow not stable. They let the phone vibrate all the time and your eyes have to vibrate in same frequency when you want to watch the vids afterwards.
Important is a stable and short neck between windshield sucker and the device itsself.
Third party products or those universal mounting need mostly one hand more to connect the USB charger in the phone. A lil bit uncomfortable, but if this isn't a issue for you, you should take care that it can't vibrate so much only.
Brodit seems to have good reputation and has lot of matching parts.
It took more than I expected to finalize the beta tests, but now DailyRoads Voyager version 1.6 is on the Android Market. Added quite a number of features, and the full changelog is listed here: http://dailyroads.com/voyager/changelog
i tried DailyRoads Voyager v1.6 on my Desire HD. i'm sorry to inform you that i had no chance but uninstalled it within an hour.
with it on at the background for some minutes, my device automatically rebooted itself (knowing that it was a known issue in capturing GPS signal, i've turned off the option of using GPS signal in DailyRoads Voyager). i had to uninstalled it after auto-rebooting the third time.
Sorry for causing such problems The symptoms seem to indicate incompatibilities between video resolution/encoder/format. If you have Android 2.2 installed, it'd be best to select HQ (High Quality) in the app, and only try CQ (Custom Quality) settings if you know your device can handle those. The native camera app can also be used to manually determine what the camera is capable of.
Hi
I've tried DailyRoads on SGS 2.2.1 (JPY) with root/lagfix and i'm having strange problems with it ...
It looks like DailyRoads makes problem with cache of system or sth like that - after 1st time install and run, everything was great through about 5 mins until freeze and autoreset ... then i had all my apps settings erased (contacts, smooth calendar settings, gameloft games savegames etc.), icons/shortcuts layout set to default, menu sorted alphabeticaly and every app with account like facebook, twitter, google reader started to freeze so i've erased cache of DailyRoads and all of those freezing apps but it didn't work. I had to reinstall those apps to fix it, and configure them/other apps again ;/
Doing this i've also uninstalled DailyRoads, and since my SGS was quite well configured again i started to think to give it 2nd chance ;>
It's sad it happened again, but this time after about 10-15 mins of using DailyRoads, and it only erased cache setting of smooth calendar and extended controls so i've uninstalled DailyRoads again
I'm not 100% sure why it's happening but until today i didn't have any problems, and it happened twice while i was testing dailyroads ... maybe it's because of lagfix ?
Anyone having similar problems ?
Besides DailyRoads is gr8 and i'd even buy it if it wasn't free ... and causing such problems on my SGS
