Just installed it.....LOVE IT! I am such a huge Sense fan, but this Expresso sense is too bloated....LauncherPro beta makes it all better again! I miss some of the Sense widgets, but this is fast and clean and fairly robust. I can't wait to see more!

Sooooo, by installing a new launcher, isn't all the bloated software still sitting on your internal memory somewhere? I find the stock Sense system to still be quick, I just don't like how much internal memory it eats up...
Yea all the stock stuff remains theyre just running on a different home, I really dont see how it "speeds" up the phone as Im sure sense is still running in the background.
The slide's htc sense launcher is incredibly fast and responsive, I see no need in replacing it but to each his own I guess.
Im coming from the original mytouch so my view may be skewed. With all 7 home screens filled up with htc widgets and other widgets and apps I receive no lag whatsoever and have about 220m free. After I kill tasks I have about 305m. On the mytouch with 5 screens filled I always had somewhere between 20-30m free. So this phone is a godsend to me, speed-wise. :]

OOOOoooohhhhh dear...
Also, 220m free? I think thats the highest I've seen... Even after a wipe, I have MAYBE 140m free.
I have seen about 220 free after a restart with no widgets loaded up aside from Status Widget. I love Sense, just not the TMo crap that's added to it.
I like sense, and the widgets that come with it....
But I hate the stupid Espresso icons, and the MyFaves icon locked on the bottom next to the app drawer. Because of those two things alone, I installed ADW.launcher. The MyFaves icon being the major reason though, I can deal with the silly looking icons.
Before switching to ADW, I removed all widgets from my sense homescreen, along with all the icons. I wanted to make sure it wasn't taking up any more resources in the background then needed. I also went into apps, and cleared the data for HTC sense.
i really want adw with the sense widgets support
any homescreen replacement like that who does such?
I often see people saying, "I would go to vanilla if..." Facebook syncing, mail support, etc. So I thought it would be a good idea to compile a list of apps that can serve as replacements for sense functionality:
syncmypix - photo syncing with social networking (particularly facebook)
ringdroid - ringtone trimmer
adw launcer - good launcher replacement
launcherpro beta - my personal choice for a launcher
beautiful widgets - weather/clock widget as well as settings toggles (bluetooth, wifi, etc.)
fancy widget - free alternative to the weather/clock widget
cubed (3) - music player
Submit your own replacements, and I'll update the list.
Helix was my primary on my Hero, but the newest ADW is the awesome. I installed all the home replacements and ADW won me over with the customization options: Horizontal or Landscape rotation, ability to peg 4 apps to the tray, ability to add columns/rows, ability to not show icon names, and overall transparency settings.

Didn't think you could put vanilla on the Evo even if you root. Am I wrong? Kinda confused

There is not yet a functioning AOSP ROM, but as soon as HTC releases the kernel source we should have plenty.

No we don't have true vanilla, but we do have more or less "sense-less" roms to some extent. You can basically pull most htc apps out and replace some others with vanilla versions. Not quite vanilla, but I prefer it as little sense as possible.

I agree ADW is very nice, but don't overlook launcherpro. All those settings are available in launcherpro too. Of course, purely your choice and personal preference, just saying.

Any rough ideas how long HTC usually waits until they release the kernel source for a phone?

They wait forever. I dont know if its a sprint thing or htc. But the htc hero it took months for 1.5 source and we have been waiting for close to a month for 2.1 kernel source.
My guess for the evo... its going to be awhile.

I'm running froyo and 4g doesnt work so no icon.
Nexus one unlocked bootloader, running RA1.8 recovery, already have the 1.9a downloaded to flash but I'm kinda stuck on what to do
I love and currently use K-o-R CM based ROM...
but I wanna get something sense UI based for the htc widgets.. bought beautiful widgets and don't like it as much. its buggy, and just kinda sucky in general - wish I could refund....
Thing is, I dont like sense ui cus i can't add rows/columns to home screen launcher..
Ideas?
Download Launcher Pro, and donate to unlock Pro features - which are Sense-like widgets.
Nothing to do with ROM.

Calendar, Messaging, Twitter, Facebook? Or they're not enough "Sense-like"?
In that case, just install a Sense ROM. You can't get both worlds. Sense is closed source, changes in Rosie launcher are way too hard.
Of course, if you don't like it, you could try to reverse engineer the Rosie code and have your way with it.

lol reverse engineering is something I might do because I want it so bad. Unfortunately I just realized the downfall of my request... reverse engineering is usually not allowed.
Well, I guess I'll try to work the launcher pro widgets since i paid for them... i didn tcheck the calander widget from lpp
Sense for widgets? Seems like you want a weather widget. try beautiful widgets...no longer in the market but im sure an apk is around.
On another note, try evil's sense Roms.

The flip clock isn't even the biggest one, I purchased Weather Widgets donate and it has an H7C skin that looks just the way I want - given it still looks like garbage - its close enough for the look. Functionality wise it isn't even close though.
I would keep on using eViL's Sense ROM but quite frankly its just inferior to the KOR pack I've been using. It so much slower, things crash a lot more for no apparent reason - not really stable, hotspots and camera have been broken for a long time now and he hasn't fixed it
Enomther supposedly had a SENSE ROM but I only found "TheOfficial" Nexus One and flashed it... yeah, NOT a sense ROM. Skinned similar to one, but its not a sense rom - has none of the stuff I've mentioned
Try this fancy widget. Its exactly like the HTC sense weather and clock. HTC made them take it off the market.

I don't see how bad evil's sense rom is. If you are talking about his Desire HD port then maybe (I haven't tried it yet). But his normal Desire port is not even remotely close to slow and unstable.
In fact out of all the roms I have flashed for N1, I have yet to find a rom that is really slow and unstable.

Yeah I think it was his Desire HD port, it was labeled as (WIP)?? Assuming that might have something to do with it. If you read the thread tons of ppl whining bout the same problems
Did you try a specific ROM w/ sense that WAS good? Mind direct linking me to the thread so I can try it out?
I went back to KOR.. kinda sad that I don't have the awesome HTC widgets tho, the email one I really liked - Launcher Pro has no replacement for it. I use work email a lot with my job so something as simple as a very nice activesync app goes a long way for me. I get about 100 emails a day...

I would recomend going over to the Nexus One Rom Bible thread. just look there for what kind of rom you need

I will be exchanging my Epic for the first dual-core phone on Sprint (don't try to convince me otherwise!)
Anyways, I'm sure it'll be an HTC EVO type of phone, so it will be lacking Touchwiz. I have gotten so used to the touchwiz Lockscreen (I text ALOT!) and it's beautiful UI.
Will you miss Touchwiz when you get a new phone?
P.S. I stay away from roms that don't have touchwiz launcher. LOL
Meh. There are other lock screens and ADW gives me better functionality than TW - particularly the ability to organize the app drawer into groups.
Beautiful UI? Touchwiz?! You must be using a different version of touchwiz then
Personally all I will miss about touchwiz will be systematically hunting down and getting rid of any elements of it.

I actually think Go Launcher is very good. Touchwiz is somewhat limited on features.
Hey hey, it's very basic and the size of the dock is perfect for my setup. I came from sense and I have a sense ui feel to my Touchwiz, but as stated, touchwiz lockscreen wont be on HTC phones, which is why I will miss it.

And eww. I tried ADW, waaayyy too many options/preferences when adding just a single shortcut. Select shortcut name, icon, destination, etc. I just want to place the damn thing on the homescreen!
When I open up TW drawer, I can simply long press on any app and it'll drag it to the current homescreen I'm on.

Launcher Pro does.
I will only miss one thing: the slide to adjust brightness on the notification bar.
TW has its good points - the music player's above average and has nice dropdown controls, and the lock screen is useful. The launcher, however, is a real piece of crap, and I wouldn't miss it. There's plenty of good music players out there.
I don't.mind touchwiz but I like launcher pro the.best.

Samsung would be better off using Launcher Pro and Beautiful widgets.
If Samsung is smart they would just have the developers for Launcher pro with Beautiful widgets work for them. I use the android AOSP lock screen and I am set the only thing I hate is when I get an incoming phone call I have to swype the screen to answer the call. I hate twiz is sucks!!! It slows your phone down and it does not have very many features. Your benchmark score improve considerably without touch wiz. But I do like the hardware on the Samsung phone better the Samsung camera and screen are why better than HTC. Superior product inferior customer service. But I understand HTC does not update their hardware so it is easier to update their phone while as Samsung updates their hardware all the time so they need new code to get the with the newest hardware working at it's optimal level.
I wont miss touxhwiz...
Ill miss the wobble of the slider
If you think touchwiz is bad, wait till you get SenseUI. At least with touchwiz you can put on a new launcher and pretend it's not there.

Kind of. The htc dialer, messaging app, and email app are dumb and ugly as butt.
..
as i believe the short answer is NO
unless in one case, using CM7.
Just install a different launcher. Most of the apps they modified are actually pretty nice in their TouchWiz versions, otherwise wait for an AOSP ROM. There are always solutions to problems.
This is why we have XDA. Someone will bake a vanilla ROM.
The concept of giving us vanilla Android without crapware is actually one that eludes practically every Android phone manufacturer, not just Samsung.

Yeah, it's kind of annoying in a way, but in a way it's the spirit of Android. Android is open and allows anyone to modify it how they choose. The manufacturers use it as a way to brand the devices in their own way, but it is kind of annoying when their UIs are bloated and slow. Now that we are moving to dual core with more memory, the speed will be less of an issue regardless of the launcher you use, so it will make it better at least. I've never found TouchWiz to be overly offensive, but it certainly isn't the fastest.
I want touchwiz enhancements, are you kidding! Nicer dialer, nice MMS, nice little brightness adjustment shortcut, nicer camera. A gingerbread launcher will help get the phone to look like you want it to, and obviously, custom ROMs will make it feel like gingerbread AOSP.

I'm pretty sure the TouchWiz launcher doesn't run if you set another launcher as default. I haven't even had a ROM with TouchWiz in it for so long that I can't say for sure though.
The touchwiz launcher will run unless you root and delete it from system/app. All the other touchwiz enhancements will still work and honestly are the best part of touchwiz. The launcher is the only part I don't like, and only because it is known to be laggy/battery hog.
