Skyfire and UK Users. - HD2 General

After weeks of messing around with settings, re-installs, et al, I find that support for UK users using Skyfire has been removed.
The following is a quote from Skyfire support:
"We've consolidated datacenter operations in the US. Because all connections now appear to come from the US you may not be able to access sites that block non-UK traffic by IP address."
I noticed this because I could only see the international version of BBC News website, which includes adverts, and some videos don't work. TVcatchup doesn't work either.
See http://support.skyfire.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=5949&st=0&gopid=30616&#entry30616 for further details, including my grumpy reply.

Don't worry... I'm a Brit in the US... The damn Beeb won't let me watch anything of theirs... I want all those TV license monies I gave them for all those years... Cheap bastiges!!!

It's really annoying isn't it. One little change at their end and suddenly most of my favourite sites have stopped working. Back to Opera I suppose - but it's not the same.
At least there's the fantastic MyPlayer app for watching iPlayer (although I assume it's not ex-pat friendly).

The TV Licence fees you already paid were for the years that you used ol' Auntie Beeb.
The only solutions are a UK proxy (either paid for or free) or, I think, MyPlayer - which uses its own fileserver of 'borrowed' BBC programmes.

I was in the military for 10 years where I spent 6-10 months of each year unable to see a TV. I should at least get a rebate...
I'll look into MyPlayer... Thanks.

Just to confirm MyPlayer does work outside of the UK as I used it to download some programmes before a plane trip back from Spain last week.
Wonderful app.

Stream FIFA World Cup live on X10

I have searched the entire forum and others and have come up with a few suggestions but none actually work.
Skyfire 2.0 has the loading video window stuck on the screen in front of a perfectly playing live stream of the game behind it, very frustrating.
Ustream loads a frozen image of the game and does not stream on my device.
ESPN3 does not work with Skyfire browser.
Is there any "working" solution to streaming games live on the X10 here in the States?
Actually i watch using ustream.
At least earlier it worked ...
I tired a lot of channels until one of them was fine.
When i saw still images instead of a stream i checked the standard ustream in the browser and i saw the same issue there too.

Thanks for the reply.
I saw 171 views with no reply and I thought it was hopeless.
I tried all the ustream channels with no luck but I have heard others also find success with it so maybe it is a network issue.
It is too bad skyfire development won't fix the loading window error because the video streaming behind it is quite good.
Too bad you are down in south... Rogers Canada user can pay $15 to get all the FIFA2010 on the X10 and iphone.

Agreed.
I would definitely pay the $15.
Does anyone know how that works? It's $5 for rogers on demand mobile and another $10 for the "world cup premium package". What does the world cup premium package do if you can already get content from CBC with the $5 package?
I am using the rogers on demand app. It works flawlessly, quality is great amd there is no buffer or skipping. It is 5 a month to use the app and a one time 10$ fee for access to the world cup matches. Worth every penny for the matches but will not use it after. Little to no content otherwise.

This works wonderfully with one exception as stated in my opening post.
The loading window freezes at 50% and the game is playing flawlessly behind it!
The skyfire devs know about it but haven't provided a fix.
My guess is they won't due to our outdated 1.6.
ustream working well today.
I could not get one station to stream yesterday.

iPlayer for Android released - and NOW WORKING!

http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/bbcinternet/2010/06/bbc_iplayer_on_mobile_a_new_ve.html
From this BBC blog, the new iplayer mobile site for android has been released and uses Flash to deliver its content. It says you need Froyo 2.2 and Flash installed, then just goto iplayer site.
But has anyone managed to get it working, mine just constantly tries to load the video.
Every video I tried failed to load - can't remember the error message now. On wifi too.
Still bookmarked it though.

Doesn't that kind of defeat the object of it? The mobile stream is a 400kbps optimized stream which should look a LOT better than a non-optimised stream through the full site.
It works now!!

Because its paid for by our TV licenses, ie its not free.
I get the error saying that I should use Wifi to access the service as 3G is limited to Vodafone and 3 only. Except my phone IS connected to Vodafone.
Will try with Wifi when I get home.
Yep, same problem.
Wifi fine, Voda 3G = no go.
works a treat now over wifi!
I'm just getting the normal desktop site when I go to the following URL, is there a special one?
http://beta.bbc.co.uk/iplayer
yup and our tv fee's are going up year on year so the rest of the world can get a cheap proxy and watch for free surely this is theft same as stealing cable etc.
I think the bbc's corporate arm should have a paid version of iplayer for use outside the uk, i dont think UK residents should pay for other countries to use it.
just a personal annoyance of mine.
or better still get rid of the f*cking fee's altogether

$50 Media Hub credit for those who ordered prior to 10/31!!!

http://forum.androidcentral.com/sprint-epic-4g/44376-free-50-media-hub-credit-epic-users.html
I confirm that it works.
Mediahub blows. I tried it once and bought a Tosh.O episode and midway through the encoding on the video was jacked up. Picture went unviewable and the player stopped. I was forced to hunt and peck on the timeline to resume after the botched section of the video.
Never touched it again after that. Besides, content is overpriced.

This simply confirms my theory that you can give every body gold bars and some people will still complain that they didn't get silver or platinum.
I have my code and it's a nice way to get folks to try out the features. Perfect for a plane ride, or better yet, a delay.
Thank you OP. I was a little pissed that I couldn't get my $50 when I heard about this promotion. I don't care if the content is crappy, it should pass by slow nights on IT call.
Good luck with mediahub, folks.
With bittorrent, any price above $0 for broadcast entertainment is overpriced, to me. I get all -- 100% -- of my TV via bittorrent downloads, and virtually always available before anything shows on commercial pay-for-media methods.
Now, with bittorrent clients available for android itself, you can eliminate the step of having to first download to your PC, then transfer to your phone. Just as convenient as MediaHub.
In fact, even more so. Set up an RSS feed from EZTV, PBay, or other torrent aggregators, and you're phone will grab your favorite show as soon as the torrent is available -- again, usually within a few hours of airing.
Finally, with tasker you can set things up to only download when there is a wifi connection, saving you from on-air data charges.
That's how I've got all this set up -- I see no reason to use MediaHub at all.

Ads = profit for companies and payment for actors = incentive for them to make more stuff.
I'll pay for media, though I am not against downloading somethings. But non the less cheap bastards DO ruin industries. "Oh its just me and my $10 bucks, they won't miss it" Eventually with enough people it adds up and they will miss it. Not to mention I personally know people who have had homes raided by FBI over stuff like that.

Ill have you know sir, that downloading TV shows online, through whatever medium, is not considered illegal filesharing. A judge ruled that sharing TV shows over the internet is the same as giving someone a VHS tape back in the day. It is not illegal and can be distributed anyway the people who record it please. Be it hard mediums or digital. Now, if one were to say download a DVD copy, THAT would be copyright infringement, but we are talking about downloading 0 day shows from EZTV - which is perfectly well within your right to do.

How about uploading TV shows, which is what torrent does? Isn't it illegal to upload files, if you don't have copyrights?

Unfortunately netflix app won't work due to hardware limitations of the snapdragon. But newer snap dragon processors will work. This app makes it possible for us unless Qualcomm is lieing about the hardware limitation.

I am fascinated and captivated by the vibrant screen on my epic galaxy s.
Just flashed bionix-v today on my vibrant. I was using bionix fusion 1.2 before and that was great, but so far this rom is amazing and has FROYO!!!
I recently cancelled my cable tv and have replaced it with Netflix and PlayOn. What's even better is that PlayOn streams Netflix, Hulu, my Amazon VOD, and all the other great channels and plugins right to my phone now from anywhere!
I didn't buy PlayOn right away because of the price, but signed up for their newsletter and jumped on a deal for 1 free month and $20 for the first year and then just $20 every year after that.
Can you tell i'm just a little excited?
Unimpressed. All this does is stream from those websites to your PC which then streams to your phone. Yawn. I can already do this with RDP/PC and access all websites that can stream to my PC.
Would be great if it streamed direct to phone via WIFI/3G.

Nope. I opened the market and installed it. No tricks, no VPNs, no market enabler - nothing. Worked on both Stock and Prime ROMs. Same with my phone, and, come to think of it, my wife's Nexus One.
I'll give it another try tonight.....thanks.

Yeah, it was OK. I just couldn't justify the cost, when the TV stuff is so easy to see rerun on cable over and over, all day long. It's a shame, but once they doubled my price I cancelled Watch Instantly and went back to DVD-only.
It's hence rather annoying that, having removed the Netflix app (which helpfully doesn't let you manage your DVD queue), it's been forced back on me by the latest firmware when I don't have (and will never have) any use for it.

It's going to get significantly worse, as well. Netflix lost their Starz deal, which means they'll be removing ~1,000 of their best movies from Watch Instantly as of early 2012.
The money they *were* paying for the Starz content (~$30 million per year for all ~1,000 movies together), they will instead be spending on Dreamworks content from 2013, priced at $30 million per year, PER MOVIE.
In other words, Netflix dropped 1,000 Sony and Disney movies through Starz, and used the same amount of money to pay for one single Dreamworks movie. And they'll be getting a grand total of three Dreamworks movies in 2013 -- which means they still need to find another $60 million worth of existing content that they can drop, to pay for the other two Dreamworks flicks.
Watch Instantly is rapidly spiraling down into a vortex of suck.
I'm confused. Wasn't Netflix available on the iPhone/iPad first?
*EDIT*
Yup. OP says iPad>Transformer
Transformer has Netflix. Netflix on mobiles isn't that old. It was first released on Apple Products then slowly released to Android. Whats the big deal? We could watch Netflix even before it was "officially" supported.

Yup, we could side load it pretty early on, ever since I have had my TF at least about 3 months. Im waiting for an official hulu+.
I bought most my employees ipad2s a few months back and fired one about a month ago so I had some time to play with a rooted ipad2. I must say that I was not impressed, I loved my TF more in just about every aspect. The only place the ipad was better was in battery life, but it also took 4 times as long to charge compared to my TF. Plus the TF paired with the dock leaves the ipad2 in the dust. I ended up giving the ipad2 to my church lol.

Not to mention that the recent tablet-specific UI update from Netflix came out on Android tablets first and it hasn't come out for iPads as of yet.
As for Hulu+, have you tried side-loading their app from a phone yet? I "harvested" the apk from my Glacier and installed it on my TF, and Hulu+ runs just fine on it. You just can't have any of the ad blockers running or your HOSTS file blocking anything.
