Samsung Vibrant VS the HTC G2 - Vibrant General

Wow no lag on the G2. Its so nice to select a button and the screen respond instantly with no lag. GPS locks even in my basement, something which the vibrant couldn't do.
But, (yes there's a but) I'm not sure I like the keyboard and because the screen is smaller, its harder to type on the touchscreen so I'm gonna have to play with this for a few days.
I love the responsiveness of the G2. So much smoother than the vibrant. I do miss the screen and the super light form factor if the vibrant. Kind of miss the SAMOLED screen too.
Samsung please tell me when Froyo will be released to the vibrant?

I will give these to the G2:
-Keyboard is great especially for emulator
-Preloaded Froyo 2.2 means no wait, no uncertainty
-HTC is a great company and has been in the game longer, making high quality hardware.
-HSPA+
What I will miss on my Vibrant is I switch to a G2:
-Native avi, mkv and various other audio/video format support (my biggest selling point).
-AMOLE screen (you should see this coming after point one)
-The more powerful GPU for emulator
-Believe it or not TouchWiz (it really makes life easier in some aspect)
I think both phones caters to a different market, but G2 just seems "developer", it is a GREAT phone, don't get me wrong but it is just very plain in terms of look and specification. It does what every other android phone does but faster because of newer internals. (Vibrant at least brings in container/format support listed above).
A newer handset with newer CPU and GPU is not really considered as a feature because as time pass better hardware means better handset internals, it is inevitable.

The g2 has a chip which reinstalls stock firmware when it senses the firmware has been tampered with. BIG downfall IMO

T-Mobile G2 Auto-Reinstalls Stock Android After a Jailbreak
If you were hoping to make any modifications to your T-Mobile G2, my apologies. Because the phone apparently ships with a rootkit that will override any changes you make to Android and reinstall the original firmware. That ain't right.
According to the New America Foundation, "one of the microchips embedded into the G2 prevents device owners from making permanent changes that allow custom modifications to the the Android operating system." The full 40-page blow-by-blow of the Dev Forum's thwarted attempts can be found here.
Between this and Motorola's Droid X eFuse kill switch, there's an unsettling—and growing—arrogance. An attitude that says you may have just paid for your phone, but you don't own it. Because if you truly owned it, you'd be able to modify it however you pleased. It's like buying a car and being told you can't buy new Bridgestones a month later. Or more relevantly, as NAF points out: it's like installing Linux on a Windows computer one night, and waking up to find Vista back in place.
So that G2 you bought? It's not yours. It's HTC and T-Mobile's. You're just borrowing it, and the terms of the loan are entirely non-negotiable. [Dev Forum via New America via Boing Boing]

My exact thought! Did I NOT say that the G2 would fail!? ahahha people arent going to to like not being able to use custom ROM's etc

they'll eventually get root for the G2.
That said, with the correct file systems, the Vibrant would tear apart the G2. The Hummingbird is a superior architecture, the GPU is better, the screen is bigger and better, the form factor is thinner and lighter.
But if I thought HSPA+ was going to make a difference, or if I wanted a keyboard, the G2 would win me over. It's a nice feeling phone, and stock Android is always a plus.

Anyone know if the Desire Z is locked down also?

pretty much this especially since is an HTC phone

The feature that I miss the most from my vibrant is the out of the box ability to play my flac files.
But I think my choice to switch will be a worth wild one.

Perhaps you all could help me out with something. I got a G2, and was seriously considering selling my Vibrant. But, in order to give the decision its due diligence, I'd like to see what the Vibrant is like on a custom rom. I have it rooted, with RyanZa's lagifix from the market installed, and was wondering which of the current roms would be best to try out, in order to best evaluate the "pick me" quality of the Vibrant? I'd prefer not to have to wipe everything, if possible. But I'm amenable to, if need be. Thanks, in advance, for your input. I'd certainly appreciate it.

LOL, you are going to have to wipe in order to use the best roms

Which would you suggest, based on your experience with them?

Try Eugene's Frankin-Twiz Rom. The thing flies with JAC's OC/UV Kernal.

I've tried Franken T-Wiz, and Bionix. I can definitely suggest Bionix. Very quick. Very stable. MUCH better than stock.

With JI6 much of everything is responsive

I appreciate the input. Just to make sure I'm good to go...
I have the RyanZa lagfix installed. Do I/Should I use th e"undo lagfix" option before attempting to flash this rom?
I see that ity wipes automatically. Does that mean it wipes my internal memory card, i.e. any nandroid I backup would be deleted as well? Or is it just like a factory reset, whereby I would just need to restore my contacts, apps, etc.
Again, thank you for your input. It's very helpful.

Ok i just got my G2 but i have played with it all night. Here is my review....
G2 -- Pros
-Fast(Yes it seems a little zippier than the vibrant)
-Keyboard
-Camera quality is good with flash
-In call quality is great
-2.2
-HSPA+
G2 --Cons
-Hinges are a real problem even though plenty of people on the G2 forums say that it was designed that way. They are just fanboys. I have had a touch pro2 which tilt and it tilted fine for months. It wont slide out if you sit rightside up but laying down on you back which i tend to do alot at night is a no can do.
-Video recording is so choppy no match for the vibrant
-Camera quality without flash is like 3mp to me
-Internal space not 4GB
-sdcard not hot swappable
-Battery life sucks(i hear its a random issue)
-Terrible! I mean Horrible! Torpid speaker on this phone!
Vibrant --Pros
-5mp camera with great quality
-video quality is superb
-fast(atleast for me im on stock with no lag unlike some users)
-16gb internal
-Audio & Video codecs
-4 inch screen SAMOLED
-Light
-A free hd quality movie
-Great speaker quality
-Touchwiz(Some may disagree but it makes life easier in alot of instances ie: music controls on locksreen, call end, speaker buttons in notification bar, wifi toggle in bar, facebook & twitter integration, daily brief)
Vibrant --Cons
-Phone quality sometime bad
-gps
-No 2.2
Now some may disagree but this is how i compare the two. When the vibrant gets 2.2 i have to say it will be much better and will kill the g2 in benchmarks. For now i think ill give the g2 back to tmobile and keep my vibrant cause a keyboard & HSPA+(isnt everywhere so its barely useless) arent enough to make me switch.

This was really helpful. I was on the fence about paying for a G2 coming from a Vibrant, but you may have helped my decision. The lack of hard keyboard is my only issue with the Vibrant. I just about loathe typing on it. I need a button press.
However, all the pros about the vibrant are the real reason i bought thia phone. I dont care about benchmarks, its not like these devices are gaming pc's. Its a rediculous thing to measure in a phone.
Ill keep my Vibrant for now, $499 for a G2 just to get a keyboard simply isnt worth it.

Yea benchmarks are only good to measure. It won't make a big difference in day to day use unless you have g1 vs a vibrant. Plus I only use the hardware keyboard when texting a lot. Other than that you will 90% use the screen

Thinking of getting getting Vibrant, opinions?

I currently have the N1, and I feel that the vibrant may end up being a better phone in the long run, even if there's small things missing from it. I want a phone that would be good with gaming and the Vibrant seems to be that phone.
Basically if you have owned an N1 please let me know if you're satisfied with the Vibrant. What makes it better, if not, again reasons why. I'm very curious.

Coming from a former N1 user, I think you'll definitely enjoy the Vibrant a lot more. It's just something about the phone...it's powerful, fast, sleek design, perfect screen size, 16GB built in memory and the AMOLED screen is best in class hands down.
The two fastest phones available for processing / gaming is the Galaxy S (Vibrant) and the iPhone 4 which uses the same Samsung CPU made in Korea.
Here is a GPU comparison for some of the leading smartphones:
* Motorola Droid: TI OMAP3430 with PowerVR SGX530 = 7 million triangles/sec
* Nexus One: Qualcomm QSD8×50 with Adreno 200 = 22 million triangles/sec
* iPhone 3G S: 600 MHz Cortex-A8 with PowerVR SGX535 = 28 million triangles/sec
* Samsung Galaxy S: S5PC110 with PowerVR SGX540 = 90 million triangles/sec
And for comparison a few consoles:
* PS3: 250 million triangles/sec
* Xbox 360: 500 million triangles/sec
I think the biggest advantage of our phone is the AMOLED screen. There's nothing like it. Check this out:

There are a lot of reasons of "why the Samsung Vibrant..."
You'll like it.
I'm a old n1 user for 6 months, although I miss froyo and the trackball alerts and flash, the vibrant is all around better. Its smoother, more sensitive awesome screen, amoled is beautiful and the gpu is amazing, its already been rooted so just wait, there will be some bad ass ****...
I
Definatly a worthy upgrade
While I can see that Vibrant may be a better phone on a paper and during the first impression, I get really annoyed with the list of issues that just keeps growing:
1. Signal issues (even if it's software related)
2. GPS issues
3. Market issues
4. No LED alert
5. No trackball/trackpad
6. Lag after few days of use
7. No adjustment for button backlight
8. No dev. support (althought I'm sure that will change)
I also understand that 2 of those are personal preferences but it still scares me that people experience all these issues 2 days after phone came out.
Good luck.

2. GPS issues Not sure, havent tested yet since I dont have the phone yet
3. Market issues Market Issues are happening even on my G1, so i dont think thats vibrant specific
4. No LED alert Workaround is being developed now using the screen OLED, search the General Forum for progress
5. No trackball/trackpad True
6. Lag after few days of use Same as 2.
7. No adjustment for button backlight I heard that was annoying but its only 4 buttons and im sure it doesnt take long to memorize their location
8. No dev. support (althought I'm sure that will change) lol its only been 2 days, dont worry im sure its gonna change besides we have JAC on here of G1 fame lol

Personally I think its worth it and those gripes are minor and easily solvable with either a custom rom, apk's being developed right now, and/or an OTA update.

I certainly value everyone's input but my mind is already made up, I'm not getting it and here's why: I spent enough time working out issues, fixing problems and finding workarounds with G1 (apps2sd, 10mb hack, Danger SPL etc). I want to get a phone that will be good out of the box so I can start improving it, not fixing it and Vibrant is not it, at least for me. I also don't think that I can overcome not having LED notification as I ALWAYS use it (along with a trackball but I don't think I really need it with a bigger screen)

That is probably a wise decision. I am probably returning my Vibrant in the next couple of days.
The signal attenuation of holding the phone naturally utterly kills my data speeds and the compass is a piece of crap. That compass does not work at all, it just randomly points around and jerks about.
The phone's display and speed are great, makes it a whole new experience compared to the G1, but with all the random bugs and the unfix-able antenna attenuation, I can't recommend this phone. Maybe if a firmware patch comes out for the compass and if you lived in an area that has excellent reception, then the phone would probably be great.

I'm with you.
After thinking about which Sammy GAlaxy i was going to get, i decided on the Vibrant. As a 5 year member and at times developer here, i too think that the Vibrant will get the most support from us. For as many reasons there are to not like the Vibrant, there are more for the other models.
Here are my personal evaluations on the Sammys.
====================================
Pro's for Vibrant
-Most like the original Galaxy (big plus for O.S. tweaks)
-Lightest weight, and best looking. This phone was meant to look good.
-Tmobile didn't load this with any junk.
-16 gigs of internal storage. Huge plus for apps. To expand to 32 gigs, only need to buy a 16 gig HC class 16 micro card. About a $100 cheaper than a 32 gig type card for Verizon/sprint.
-True 4G speeds, without paying the extra fee for it.
cons against tmobile vibrant
-LED (would be nice for knowing when phone is fully charged.)
-weird location for charging (TOP)
-no flash (front camera means nothing to me)
Con's against ATT captivate
-same hardware as tmobile but ....
loaded with ATT junk, restricted maps, ****ty network.
-no free movie, extra backplate or great headsets.
cons against Verizon fascinate
-2 gigs of Internal ROM storage (see above)
cons against Sprint EPIC.
-1 gig of internal storage (see above)
-Keyboard can be a plus/minus, for me, it's unwanted extra weight.
-HUGE. Biggest and heaviest of the bunch.
-Sprint extra fees for 4G even if you don't get it.
So it's all a matter of ranking those and more. To me, the biggest pluses are ease of development of which i believe the Vibrant is withs its' near Galaxy stock version. And the internal high speed memory of both ATT and Tmobile.
If a keyboard is a must for you, then the choice is easy.
If a flash camera is needed, then the Verizon/SPRINT is a mimimum. For those live for the webcam things, assuming you have or will have friends that use one of these front camera things, then only Sprint should be your choice.
I personally can't think of a reason to get the ATT model unless Tmobile doesn't have service in your area. And outside of a flash camera, I can't see a reason to get the lower memory Verizon version. I think it's a 2 horse race between the Vibrant and the EPIC.

Well said and thanks for sharing.
I agree with you that the front facing camera means nothing to me. The led flash is not a big deal either.
It's important for people to realize that this is a phone, not a flash camera so they should really evaluate what the sole purpose of a phone is. Then they may begin to realize the appreciation of what the Vibrant offers and not lose sleep over the ffc or led flash on the camera.
As for the carriers, TM and ATT are contracted to share towers, therefore, the reception between the two are the same. What you have to do is to make sure you go to network settings and turn on the network to AUTO...by default they are selected specifically to their carrier and you'll only connect to that tower. How do I know this about the two carriers? Somethings are left better unsaid.
What I can tell you though is that it's very real. I know it's real and have experienced it myself in places I had 0 reception, now I have full bars. I check my phone and sure enough it says ATT, when I'm a TM customer.

As far as performance, the Vibrant benchmarks better than the Cyan 6.0 Nexus One, except for the linpack because of the JIT on 2.2.
Now I will tell you what I like better about the Vibrant than the Nexus One.
Hardware:
* Larger more beautiful screen and MUCH better in the sun.
* I actually like the lightness of the phone.
* VERY thin, thinner than the N1.
* Capacitive buttons that actually work correctly, the N1 has a problem with the lower section of that area.
* Battery Life is better. 1500mAh! Just don't load up the screen with all the widgets available.
Software:
* I do enjoy the daily briefing widget
* The camera takes photos as soon as you hit that button, no lag!
* Messaging is MUCH better with a nicely done "bubble" thread style.
* The calendar is MUCH better showing your agenda under the "31month" view like iPhone does. Better polish to it.
* Integration with contacts is huge! Facebook, twitter, SMS all in one place under "updates" in contacts. Swipe right to call and swipe left to text!
* World Clock! Something I use greatly on my old iPhone but Android never had one and the market versions I do not like. The Vibrant copied the alarm, world clock, stopwatch, timer app from iPhone and it is beautiful!
* Beautiful memo pad!
* Drop down power control! Just swipe down and there is your power controls, no need to use screen space for that now!
Samsung has done a great job at polishing up Android! I look forward to the improvements Gingerbread brings to the polish of Android but until then, I feel Samsung has done a great job!

I returned two today. Compass is useless but I can live with that. But the GPS is also VERY VERY bad. Didn't work in my unit, didn't work in my wife's unit, and, best of the best, didn't work in the store unit.
It simply a very bad GPS sensor.

I just tested my Vibrant to my N1 in maps and the direction the Vibrant thinks I am going is all over the place. There is a serious problem with the GPS or compass.
(Update) After a battery pull all seems well but slower to respond than the N1.

Boy did I see this at the right time, I am currently holding a vibrant in my hand, well its on my desk, I LOVE IT, sold my Nexus on Ebay for 450.00 and got this for 345.00 becauseiIt was an early upgrade. Well let me tell you, the Phone is INCREDIBLE (not the Droid..lol) The screen is amazing, it is fast, its thin and light, the rep told me its a Gorilla screen which is scratch resistant, but I still put a screen protector on it. The down side its android 2.1-update, but 2.2 shortly, I probably will not rom the phone, not sure why you would the Interface is amazing, and the screen I still can believe is amazing. Also there is no Flash for the Camera but it has some kind on night shot, the HD 720p video is amazing. (I should go work for Tmobile... lol). If you like to know anything else let me know.
Thanks
Lou.

* Beautiful memo pad!
* Drop down power control! Just swipe down and there is your power controls, no need to use screen space for that now!
Samsung has done a great job at polishing up Android! I look forward to the improvements Gingerbread brings to the polish of Android but until then, I feel Samsung has done a great job!

I agree. Samsung has done a fine job with the Galaxy S phones.

[Q] Pros and Cons of N1 to G2: A worthwhile upgrade?

I know the two devices' internals are extremely similar, but I'm strongly considering getting the G2 anyway. I'm just having a hard time fully commiting to justifying the purchase even though I really, really want it, haha.
What do you think? Are the pros and cons for this upgrade a worthwhile endeavor?
Here's what I'm thinking so far:
Pros:
The Adreno 205 GPU, supposedly 4 to 5 times more powerful than the N1's: http://gizmodo.com/5633855/g2s-benchmarks-show-that-despite-processor-speed-it-should-be-fast
Flash Hardware Acceleration, which apparently the N1 cannot do (wtf? really?) (see "Adreno 205 features": http://smartphonebenchmarks.com/for...t-compare-to-other-gpus/page__pid__65#entry65 )
Lower clock speed CPU (800 MHz) vs the N1's 1 GHz, yet the same performance (or better). This, along with the last point = possibly better battery life?
Better multitouch panel (no axes flipping). Would be good for those multitouch games, which I've mostly avoided with the N1
No screen miscalibration issues (having to turn screen off to fix)
Optical trackpad rather than trackball = longer life / won't get dirty / break.
[Edit 9/29]:
HSDPA+!!! For faster 3G, or "4G" even!
Much more internal space for apps etc (4GB on the G2 vs 512MB on the N1)
(Hopefully) the soft button weirdness is fixed (ie the pressure points on the N1's soft buttons aren't directly on the button labels)
Wifi Calling Possibly? http://phandroid.com/2010/09/27/t-mobile-g2-to-feature-wi-fi-calling-but-no-tethering/
Cons:
Slower Google Updates since the N1 will still be the developer phone and the T-Mobile G2 won't be
The G2 will be a bulkier and heavier device
Optical trackpad = no trackball notifications [Edit 9/30]: --> www.youtube.com/watch?v=FCUrxJg_TwQ !!!!!!!
Cost / inconvenience of switching devices (my contract ends in March 2011 so I'd buy off-contact and re-sell my N1 to cover the cost)
Small screen; I'd really like a 4" screen, preferably a Super AMOLED. Sticking with 3.7" is a downer. And there's always some better device on the nearby horizon. However, one with Stock Android is going to be rare, is it not?
[Edit 9/30]:
No FM Radio, HDMI-Out, or Front-Facing Camera (not that the N1 has these, but surely other phones coming out a month or two after the G2 might)
And then there's the keyboard, which at this point I consider neither a positive nor a negative. I've grown accustomed to an on-screen keyboard (Swype) on my N1, and I'm not really that heavy of a texter anyway. So it could be amazing to have a physical keyboard again (I had the G1 previously), or I might ignore it and hate the added weight/bulk.
What do you think? Is this a worthwhile upgrade? Any other pros or cons that I'm missing?
i want one, but to justify it like u said is hard. The N1 is still IMO one of the top phones out even after all these other phones. I will keep mine for some time. Since I never upgraded with my N1 I will buy my wife the G2 since shes coming from the Cliq. They just got 2.1. She will enjoy the bigger screen, flash for the cam, and flash/ 2.2 and she has to have a keyboard.
Will there be a N2 or a phone the google will call there N1 in the future? Thats what I wait for. There is no way Im selling my N1 either
N1 to Vibrant or G2 or what?
I had the misfortune of having my N1 "go away" (don't ask) and I ended up going for a Vibrant as the "next best thing" -- but have since been feeling left out of the Android game (I'm an Android developer, as well) and have been looking at the G2 with some interest.
I've pretty much decided to wait. The N1 is still the phone of choise for developers, ROM cookers, and modders. Part of it is because it's great hardware, but I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that it's the closest thing to the Android code base. It will always get the first updates, it will always get a more stable platform, and it's pretty much the phone that Android itself is coded for/on. Every google employee has one (or at least had one at one point), including the google devs. And I think it will be that way until google either launches another phone, or has an intimate connection to a specific phone (maybe even on a specific carrier.) That's the phone I'm waiting for. And hopefully my Vibrant will catch up a bit with the custom ROMs and I can go back to "pure" stock Android. Not into my Android looking so much like iOS.
The N1 and the G2 are great phones, and I think they'll be at the top of the pile for a while longer, but they won't be forever. And I'm just waiting to see where the next next generation phone shows up.
Just sharing my thoughts, not really looking for debate on my points.
My biggie would have to be INTERNAL SPACE. This is a major flaw in the nexus. I can't even install sense like roms along with my necessary apps because of this.

If you're a developer, wouldn't it make more sense to stick with N1 instead of the Galaxy? Even with Gingerbread/3.0 coming out soon (read: Nov/Dec) the N1 is still pure Android supposedly be able to run 3.0 as well.

How many necessary apps do you require? I was able to install the Sense ROM from these forums without issues.
One in particular is a space hog for corporate email "Good for Enterprise" takes up well over 35mb on a slow day and it contains widgets so i cant move it to SD.
Did you go through all HTC apps and move them to SD card?
Either way to most internal space i have even now on cm6 is 30mb, internal space on the nexus is horrible.
@fnirt: Yeah you're right; I forgot to mention that the N1 will probably have more support from XDA etc than the G2. Although... Cyanogen, THE man himself, is actually purchasing a G2... So who knows, maybe the G2 will gain just as much support from the community as the N1?
@gkaugustine: Ah yes, I didn't even consider internal space. The N1 has 512 MB of space for apps while the G2 has 4 GB? Wow, good jump. Although I can't say I have trouble with this since I use the Apps2SD feature of CyanogenMod6 to move all my large apps.
Oh yeah! HSDPA+!!
Well, I didn't even think about this until you mentioned it...no trackball alerts?
There better be some blinking (and I mean every 2 seconds, not the idiotic one every 15 seconds we had at the launch of the nexus) led notification.
Otherwise it's a dealbreaker for me.
But if they're right about flash being hardware accelerated...I'm intrigued, for the first time. (I don't care about gaming because the only time I find myself having TIME to game, I'm already home and my PS3 with Wipeout HD are right there).
Honeslty Paul I wouldn't upgrade until you know that there are no GPS issues like the galaxy phones and other issues which may not be apparent until later.
IMO, the Nexus One is still the most complete package of a phone.
Yep, no trackball alerts. Though I think the trackball as we know it will soon be phased out of all phones forever (in favor of trackpads), so you can pretty much kiss that feature goodbye. In addition to trackballs getting dirty and eventually trackball failure, it's probably cheaper in the long run for the manufacturer due to less support and fewer phone replacements.

Yeah, I'm definitely not going to pre-order the G2. I want to at least play with it in store (unlike I did with the N1, though that was a HUGE jump from the G1, so it didn't matter as much).
Also, because my upgrade date is 6 months away, I actually can't pre-order haha.

I realize that, and I am already starting to worry about my Nexus's trackball becoming dirty/sticky and I have no idea how I'm gonna replace it. I'm all for trackpads, but having no dedicated LED light like on the iPhone or the Galaxy S phones is totally a dealbreaker for me. I don't want to have to grab my phone to know I have a message. Do you know if the G2 will have one?
But I like the idea, IF true, that it will hardware accelerate Flash, because more and more sites are starting to have higher quality videos which get choppy on the Nexus, and that's unfortunate, since one of my regular bashing points on the iPhone is the lack of flash.
Does anyone have the internal spec sheet on the G2? im interested to know where the radio antenna is installed.
I love my trackball... especially when I had my sidekick 3 and it had trackball notifications. Awesome and convinient.
I would hold off... I have a full upgrade with tmobile and I'm holding off for a bigger screen, front facing camera, and other gingerbread goodies to come next year.

I'm sure that at the very least it has a charging light, that can be hacked. I've also heard for other phones of people looking into hacking one of the 4 soft buttons, so that the backlight on one of them acts in a similar manner to our trackball notification.

Ah yes, I forgot about the front-facing camera feature. Buying a new phone without it makes me pause... Though to be honest I would never, ever use it, but it's just a point so that iphoners can't brag about it to me.
Trackball alerts are great, but a poor alternative may be the Blinker app. It uses the charging LED for notifications, so you only have a few options (orange, green, blue), but with rate combinations...
I'm thinking about a new phone for my wife, and there's not many Androids with keyboards.

Just a heads up. There is a led notification at the top right of the phone that Does appear to blink. Also, a lot of people are saying the ring around the trackpad lights up. So we'll see.
I just sold my N1 for $400 and pre-ordered the G2.
What sealed the deal for me:
4GB internal memory
720p recording - I know the N1 has it hacked, but it was always slow for me.
Dedicated GPU
Flash Acceleration
No multi-touch/screen positioning issues - This was a big one for me
HSPA+
Keyboard - I text a lot :\
What I'll miss:
Fast updates
Crazy dev support
Beautiful styling
Noise-canceling
AMOLED display - G2 uses STFT.

They could, and should think about doing a light halo around the trackpad like around the button on the touch pro... (obviously it should be a RGB one, not just plain white leds)
Even better let it have segments (like an xbox...)
HTC... gimme a job!
Oh yeah, I also forgot the soft button weirdness on the N1. I've always found that it works better to tap above the white labels than directly on them. Hopefully the G2 has this fixed.

All i need is a little convincing...

Hey guys. Im new to the forum, I've been over at M3 with my Motorola Cliq. I have a full upgrade available to me, and right now im considering the Vibrant since my fiance just got the captivate and its pretty sexy.
The only problem is, I dont know anyone with a vibrant, so instead of googling for bonehead reviews, i figured id post here and get opinions from people who are actually involved with their phones (and i will most likely root it). So my main question is, why should I get this phone instead of waiting for the G2 or the MyTouch HD? What are its main downfalls? Also, how is root on this phone? Hows the tethering, overclocking/underclocking? It looks like theres plenty of ROM support. Also, after briefly skimming through these forums, I'm seeing a lot of stuff on a "lag fix". What lag are you referring to?
So I welcome your personal opinions, good or bad, i appreciate it. Thanks.
PS - Cosmetically I must admit I'm not impressed. The IPhone-like body repelled me at first, and it really does feel like it may be TOO light. But if the good outweighs the bad, im sure i can get used to these things.
best screen on the market
hummingbird processor is superior to snapdragons
it's thin and light, barely noticeable in your pocket
super easy to root, super easy to tether without apps (instructions for OSX)
major downfalls include waiting on samsung's lackluster support and some users are experiencing GPS issues
i personally thought my vibrant was still more responsive on 2.1 than an EVO i was playing around with on 2.2. i can't wait until this phone gets froyo, it should fly!

Thanks for your input. Well, I'm pretty used to horrible customer loyalty, having had to deal with Motorola for the past 10 months.
Thin and light: I must say, it feels like a toddler could snap it in half. That is one of my main concerns.

Vibrant all the way!!!!! one of the best phone's out there!!!!!!!!
"Vibrant" screen, memory, speed, processor, thin phone, NO SLIDing KEYWORK, trackpad and touchscreen don't make senses to me... So vibrant all the way. For rooting i used "one click rooting" and lag fix i used Ryan's Lag fix, and to fix the GPS i used "vibrant-JI2-GPS.zip" (room manager needed)

Yes. I'm using Bionix's mods & he's got the GPS & all that other stuff fixed in his ROM. As long as you use a custom ROM it's all good.
I was disappointed with the stock firmware, and had started regretting my purchase. Then I rooted the phone and applied the bionix ROM, and now I'm loving my phone.
The thing is, Samsung takes a long while to support upgrades to Android, so if that's a problem, you may want to go HTC G2. Personally, I don't like the slideout keyboard, because they invariably feel more flimsy and prone to break than the candybar style of phone.
The GPS has been a problem for many people, myself included. Samsung has acknowledged the problem and is reportedly working on a fix. I can tell you that the bionix rom, like several others, incorporates a fix that has made it workable for me.
Another issue for many of us is the lack of a front-facing camera. Another poster has found the hardware for it online for $17 US, and I hear that one of the developers may be working on the software.
Overall the phone, once a custom rom is in place, is snappy and a good performer. After flashing the rom, my only real complaint has been the poor T-Mobile coverage, especially in my home. There is a recent rumor that T-Mobile is going to enable UMA (cell phone calls over wifi) for recent Android phones. That would pretty much finish off any of my complaints...
Hope this helps
I have not owned any other smart phones before I purchased this Vibrant. That being said, I absolutely love this phone. The only issues I have had with it is the GPS problem (takes forever to lock on and loses signal randomly than can't find a lock again for quite some time) and the "Lag". For clarification, the "Lag" is a very minor issue that affects only some phones, and is only noticed by the picky users IMO. Basically, you click on something and the phone "lags" out every now and than for maybe 1 second.
Now it needs to be stated that not all Vibrants are experiencing these issues. My wife has a Vibrant as well and has not noticed any major issues with her GPS, while I have on mine.
However, if you have no qualms with modding your device, the two major issues this phone has can easily be fixed. Rooting couldn't be simpler with the One Click Root (You install it on your computer, attach your phone, and click a button, than follow 3 easy steps on your phone). There are One Click Lag fixes that are just as easy (Which can be downloaded from the market). I have used it and it without issue. The GPS can be fixed by either flashing one of the multiple fixes out there, or simply installing a custom ROM from Bionix, or Eugene. (I am currently using Eugenes Frankin-Twiz and my GPS locks on in about 20 seconds, and hasn't lost signal once.)
That being said, I have heard that a JI5 update for our device is being rolled out pretty much as I speak via KIES. Don't know what that update fixes, but from what little I have read, people that had GPS issues are no longer having them after updating. I just backed up my current ROM and will likely be flashing the update shortly to test it out.
Hope this helps in your decision.

You wouldn't say that if you used an app that hits the database hard.
Newsrob for example, an excellent google reader app. It's SLOW on a stock vibrant. Apply any of the lag fixes, and it FLIES.
For many apps, I would actually agree that it's nit-picky. However, Samsung F-ed up by trying to force their stupid proprietary filesystem on all of us when standard ones perform significantly better. There's no good reason to cripple this excellent hardware with crap software when free, open source software that is already in the Linux kernel Android is based on is so much better.
Thanks guys. Im surprised these threads dont have a "thank" button
i do regret jumping the gun on getting the vibrant, because i'm a huge fan of physical keyboards, and the g2 looks to have a pretty decent one. with that said, that is the only advantage the g2 has.
vibrant's pros-
display. i really don't think we'll see another phone that can match this phone's screen for a good while.
tv out. loading movies up on my phone and plugging them into the tv is fantastic!
gpu. everytime i check out some market games, the general comment concensus shows that the galaxy s phones never really have an issue running any games. the ps1 emulator running flawless is pretty much all the proof you need.
dev support. coming from the g1 with cyanogenmod, i was kinda worried that we wouldn't have any decent devs working on this thing, but my worries were unfounded. the user sombionix has made a ROM on his own (as far as i know) that has made this phone into the powerhouse it should be. the battery life is worlds better, it runs like i expected it to run when i first got it, and the list goes on. there's also a handful of other users whipping up some pretty decent themes and mods for us.
that's all i can think of at the moment. my personal cons with the phone are no led notification, no keyboard, and certain elements of touchwiz. i really wanna like tw, but there are some features that should be able to be changed or completely disabled.
so it's really up to you. just know (as i learned) that once you buy a phone you really want, there's gonna be 5 more just around the corner that you'll really want too. so just do some research, weigh the pros and cons, and go from there. luckily for us consumers, we've reached the point where there's nothing but good **** coming out, so let's reap the benefits.
I've noticed alot of Devs are moving towards the Vibrant, that says it all. Yes there are minor issues but fixes are already present and official fixes are on the way. Plus when we get Froyo, this baby will be on steroids. Get it! I hear that Walmart is selling it for $99. That should seal the deal for you.

Im actually one of those picky users that you guys are referring to ....processor speed is number one on my list of things that i want out of a smartphonee, thats why i was concerned about this issue, but i hear nothing but positive results from these "lag fixes" so i dont think its enough to affect my decision. heres my list, in order, of important things in a phone for me:
1. Processor - 1gh hummingbird, which can be overclocked/underclocked....+1
2. Storage/Memory - this phone has pllllenty....+2
3. RAM - from what i gather, this phone is up to par, no more no less than the average Android smartphone....0
4. Modding abilities - The developer support for this phone seems very good, with a decent amount of ROMs to choose from that offer your basic root features, and software improvements +1
5. Display - no need to explain....+2
6. Keyboard - Lacks physical keyboard....-1
7. Design - IPhone look is too unoriginal and basic (not looking foward to people asking "derr, is that an iphone??"), phone seems way too prone to damage with being as light as a feather....-2
8. Firmware - I can't grade it, cause it's not something you can judge on paper, but its last on the list because ROMs usually address any issues....0
Well, based on my horrible, makeshift, totally irrelevant grading system...as a non-user, this phone gets a +3.
The only reason im dissecting and trying to pick all of your brains is because, 2yrs is a long time to commit to a phone, and like christpuncher said it will most likely be behind the pack within 6months, and i really want to make sure this phone will put up the longest fight possible.
Android 3.0 should be released around the New Year, whats the likelihood the Vibrant will see that?

More important then specs and what everyone else thinks in a biased Vibrant forum is what do you want and need. I've owned the MyTouch (1rst Gen) HTC G1 and iPhone (jailbroken), HTC Touch Pro II and Vibrant on T-Mobile. And have used the MyTouch Slide for a few days. I don't think you can compare these phones apples to apples.
At least in my expeirence and view, the MyTouch phones are more along the lines of messaging/social phone. It's outta your way when your not using it (small) and feels more like an on the go phone. In contrast my Vibrant feels more like a premier and capable phone. It's more of a multimedia targeted phone and boasts a stronger cpu and better display. The G2 will have a hardware keyboard and if you've used the Touch Pro II's keyboard (best in market IMO) then you'll have an idea how great HTC's hardware keyboards can be. I miss that keyboard but have grown to live without it on my Vibrant. The G2 from what I've read wont carry the huge specs (800mhz cpu?) of the Vibrant but then again it's not targeted at the same market. I see the G1 and G2 as the do everything good phone.
My best advice is to wait till the G2 comes out and head down to a Tmobile store and play with them. I was set on buying the MyTouch Slide when I headed down to the store and check out the Vibrant b/c of the rave reviews. After holding it in my hands and playing with it, I was amazed but still was going to get the MyTouch Slide. Then I compared price, specs, and features and the Vibrant in my case was a steal after I headed to Walmart where I got it for $150. The MyTouch Slide was selling for $179 at Tmobile.
Anyhow, I would personally purchase the Vibrant again over the MyTouch and I would only want the G2 because it adheres to Android rules more so then Samsung does (filesystem and stock apps).

If I had to take a shot in the dark I'd say the Vibrant will NOT be seeing 3.0, but that is 100% speculation on my part. I'd imagine the G2 will get 3.0 and probably some updates further than that. That said, the dev support for the Vibrant is outstanding. At the moment I'm rockin' Eugene373's Frankin Twiz and Voodoo lagfix. I'd be willing to bet even if we don't get an "official" 3.0 update that we'll still see it on our Vibrants in due time.

Do your think the new mytouch4g is better

Well I've been showing my phone off tio my friends and most of them say they think the new mytouch is better than the vibrant and some guy thinks his ipod touch 2g is better because his pocket pond app has better graphics

its all about personal preference.
vibrant has best gpu,samoled screen.
mt4g has flash, hspa+, and a ffc.
id personally stick with my vibrant. once its lag fixed and oc'd its a beast.
and that ipod 2g is not better than the vibrant lol that guy who said that has to be a noob, the reason pocket ponds looks so good on it,because its optimized for the hardware.
Yup! What's ffc

1. Vibrant will have full flash once 2.2 hits.
2. Hspa+ is a backwards compatible service, so the vibrant will still benefit from it (up to the hardware limit which is like 7 mbps)
3. You can mod a ffc onto the vibrant if you really want it...but there really aren't too many practical uses for it right now anyway.
The vibrant is by far still a better device imo.

I think he is talking LED flash
From the last Apple announcement:
Reporter: What about flash support?
Steve Jobs: Our phones love flash, that where we store things.
I do think Vibrant is a better choice, even though the Snapdragon 2nd Gen processor in HTC phones (G2 and MyTouch 4G) is a beast on its own, but if it weren't for somewhat childish looks of MTG4 and the fact that you cannot mod the damn thing (only temp root, and no RW access to NAND) makes it a bit of a downer.

Will you have to get the official update to get flash? I'm running Eugene's froyo and my phone won't receive any updates at all for other reasons so if i can't get flash that would suck.

my mistake i should have said led flash.
and yea once the banding issues are fixed i am buying a Ffc lol
From a majority consumer point of view, the MyTough3g is better.
FFC isn't a niche device, it's pretty mainstream considering you can now chat with people who use Yahoo Messenger from your Android phone if it has a FFC. Don't really care about Qik, but Yahoo is very much in use in the world. I suspect Windows Live Messenger will debut this feature quite soon with some Windows Phones coming out with FFCs.
The phone is snappier. Doesn't have the crappy RFS file system. The GUI looks good, and the Speech recognition works great. Doesn't feel like a paper plate in you hands, either (though I've added a cover to my vibrant to put some weight on it).
The Vibrant is a good device but the software (and I've heard FroYo doesn't really change much, outside of the fact that it's FroYo and yes I do need some of the features in FroYo so I welcome it) is terrible and some of the ommisions are just mind-boggling. No LED on front for notifications, for example. No Flash. GPS that still doesn't work correctly for half the people who have it. Slow as hell file system that makes the phone unusable from time to time. Less Application RAM than an HTC Aria. The GPU really doesn't matter because Android 2.1/2.2 still doesn't have a gfx accellerated GUI and Windows Mobile 6.5 has more games than Android (more games that you're bother installing, that is).
HTC also typically has an HTC Sync application for their phones, which makes managing them much easier than Galaxy S in the US (no Kies for us).
TBQH, I'm tired defending this phone. I wonder when others will get tired of it (prolly never on this forum, people still call the HD2 the greatest phone on earth here). This device is being completely overshadowered by other offerings and the only reason why it sold so well on AT&T/T-Mobile/Sprint is because:
1. T-Mobile didn't have anything else worth buying in the range of high end smartphones (HD2 not an option for most people with it's OS and problematic reputation)
2. AT&T Doesn't have much other high end smartphonts other than Palm Pres and the Torch that just came out with the Captivate (the Pre and Torch feel more mid-range compared to iOS/Android devices, and there was the Aria as well in that space).
3. Sprint had so many issues with Evo backorders/issues that customers had no issue but to get something else. They have no other good phones. Their Pres are 1st gen and no one wants a Touch Pro 2 or Hero, Lol...
How that there are other good phones coming out... I wouldn't expect much.
Not everyone is a power user. My mom doesn't cry about not being able to jailbreak her Blackberry and when she had a WinMo phone she didn't even install an app on it. She just used it as a phone/txt device (basically as a feature phone). The temp-root issue is only an issue for a very small minority of users - so it isn't even an issue at all in the grand scheme of things.
I looked at the new mytouch.
No thanks.
And I'm at a loss as to the above posters issues. This is my third android phone, and it us by far the fastest happiest android device I've used. My last phone, the Nexus one, although sexy, would need a reboot at least once a day to keep it snappy.
And I live the size if included internal memory is the Vibrant. No need for special hacks to get files on SD.
The Vibrant, for me, is a fantastic phone.
And yes, can't wait for the banding issue to be resolved for the FFC.
Oh, and it doesn't need a flash. It takes better pictures in low light conditions without one, than other phones that have a flash
Well, the one thing that is unmatched on the Galaxy S line is the amazing screen. Sorry, but I can't go back to LCD or plain AMOLED after this. After all, you use the screen more than any other feature on a smartphone.
As for the other things, it all depends on what's important to you. GPS works great for me now. FFC would be nice, but not necessary for me. As for flash? Meh, LED flash is barely adequate as a solution.
Personally, I picked the Vibrant because aside from the core smartphone functions, I wanted a phone that could also replace my old iPod. So for me, having 16gb of built-in memory was more important than even having a camera, much less a flash.

My First Impression Of The MyTouch 4G:
The screen on the MyTouch 4G is much higher in resolution. You can barely see pixels. The MyTouch 4G produces real whites, the SuperAmoled produces green/blue whites. However the SAMOLED has a much better contrast ratio, meaning colors pop since blacks are much darker.
The 3.8 inch screen is too small for me
The Build Quality of the 4G seems to be good.
The GPU seemed slower than the Vibrants PowerVR.
The CPU is faster on the 4G.
Now here is the odd part. I must admit I've noticed the same thing with the G2.
Both the G2 and the Mytouch 4G are HSPA+, while the Vibrant is not. However, side by side, running speedtest app. The vibrant EVERY SINGLE TIME had both higher download and upload speeds. It just doesn't make sense. Side by side, the Vibrant got almost 6mbps download. MyTouch 4G best it could do was 3mbps. Same with the G2, I don't get it.

Every phone has its fanbois. I just left T-Mo and played with an HD7.
Vinrant fells like an 8088 PC-XT compared to that. Only way to think this phone is snappy is to have only used worse phones.

Me and my roomate both had our Vibrants in the store. We were astonished by the difference, just in scrolling form home screen to home screen. The Vibrants were obviously laggy doing something trivial. The Windows phone just blew through everything. The UI is beyond polished. The minimalist look definitely works well.
Microsoft definitely took the best route short of developing their own phones: Lock down the hardware and focus on doing what you do best - software ~ namely the OS and all the device drivers. Google should take note, or Android will suffer (although I'm sure it will be prevalent in the low-mid range device market, since Nokia isn't that big a player - at least in the US).
We played with the MyTouch 4G. The phone itself is ugly and I'm not a fan of screens < 4". It has some Sense elements in it which = update churn like 90% of other Android phones. The G2 performed decently but it has a whole host of problems. If you haven't experienced that ****ty hinge I implore you to go to a T-Mobile store and play with it. The minute the phone is perpendicular to the floor the phone starts closing (more like slamming) on you. That makes the phone unusable for me if I'm lying in bed and using it (as I often do before I go to bed). I guess something like an Epic 4G or Droid 2 wouldn't have that issue, though. That hinge was a terrible idea, Lol.
Oh, and did I mention the touchscreen keyboard on WP7 is /drools/ worthy.
I can't see myself getting any other Android Phone again.
If you get a phone with a UI on it that looks decent it is bound to come with hoards of issues and update churn. If you get a stock phone the built quality is pure crap and/or half the space is taken up to lock the phone down instead.
In any case, I heard FroYo for Galaxy S in the U.S. is supposed to be coming Nov. 11 on Facebook from "Samsung Galaxy S."
I heard Galaxy S performance is still below acceptable with FroYo, though... Some people are reporting regressions.
i just picked up the new mt4g. i have two phone lines (one for my work) and will probably keep both phones. i will need to use the mt4g for a couple of weeks go form a complete review/opinion on the phone v. the vibrant.
the mt4g is very solid and very snappy considering all the bloatware. with its HTC Espresso UI, the interface isn't for every body. Just like HTC sense it does a huge amount of social integration, moreso than the vibrant. And just like HTC sense you have pre-set "themes" you can load in terms of personal and business preferences.
it's screen is super crisp but no where near as "vibrant" as our vibrant phones. in terms of gaming, i haven't compared the two yet as i'm sure the mt4g can handle them well to a certain extent vs. the vibrant being that it's a second gen snapdragon. but i'm sure in terms of rendering and graphic display, it won't match the vibrant. i'll probably compare the gaming and video playback between the two later this week.

There's been no announcement or even real rumor of the sort, unfortunately.
The only thing that's confirmed is "by the end of the year".
If the mytouch had at least a 4" screen I would get it. That being said, I'm looking forward to the android version of the Dell Venue Pro

You're wrong.
The source of my info is in the the sentence you quoted.

Do You Make This Trade?

Hey guys.
I've had my HD2 for about 6 months now, and have enjoyed tinkering with it.
I've run WP7 and Android on it, and I'm currently running HyperDroid GBX.
I've listed it for trade in the marketplace. I've gotten two offers so far.
One was for a G2, and the other for a Samsung Galaxy S i9000.
Do you make either of those deals? I like the AMOLED on the Galaxy, but other than that I'm not sure that I'm getting anything special over my HD2.
I appreciate any feedback.
Thanks!
stay away from the galaxy! theres a reason why its called samsucks
I wouldnt trade it for a G2, specs are pretty much the same. tho the G2 is 4G capable, the big screen on the hd2 wins me over(plus the fact that you can have both android and windows). the keyboard on the G2 is kinda iffy too IMO. just wait for a better deal

the only good thing about the Galaxy is the awesome screen display...thats pretty much it. ive read a lot of threads about how the phones gps doesnt function properly right out of the box and several other issues. a couple friends have one and also say they hate it so Ill take their word for it lol. try searching phone prices on ebay for the HD2 and then try for other phones to get a good idea of what a good trade would be. hope this helps you out
I haven't tested the GPS on the captivate i'm using now, but either way I don't care, since GPS down here is useless.
Whilst I will say performance wise, the captivate is better, but in terms of amusement, I enjoyed the HD2 more. Reason being the HD2 had a lot of roms to try out, each with something different. With the captivate, it's either stock, themed stock, touchwiz or themed touchwiz. There just isn't variety in them, only in performance atmost. (Or maybe i'm just bored with android, who knows, i think i'm being too critical here)
Well one plus I like for the captivate is the fact it plays almost any video I throw at it, up to 720p, save for MKV files with subtitles, subtitles just refuse to show. Also I like the macro focus on it, but not everyone is an avid photographer I guess. Battery life is better also, but it's not a big difference.
I was offered a T-Mobile G2 as well.
Thoughts? I really don't know much about the G2 as far as customer satisfaction...
The G2.... Umm I guess the most you can get is better performance and a keyboard i guess. Prolly battery life also. I'll just lay the rundown of the advantages over the HD2 that i'm sure of
Better performance (Note on a custom rom)
Camera with all working features, with shutter button
More ROM for internal storage
Keyboard
That's all I can think of.

Cool. Thanks for the info.
I want to make an educated decision here.
My options are the Galaxy S, G2, and an iPhone 3GS.
I'd go G2. I also came from an HD2 and I can confidently say that the hinge issues don't exist. Its how the phone was designed. The keyboard is also one of the best I've used on a phone.
Also, the performance is by miles, way better than the HD2. Not gonna lie.
The only thing that might hold you back is the screen size. Also, the G2 ROM selection might not be up to par likle the HD2's.
And as icing on the cake, its got 4G.
I'd say, go for it if you want to move on. That's what I did. And i'd say I made a wise decision.

If you have a grandfathered (read cheap) data plan like me then no, you don't make the trade.
Putting my tmous sim in either one of those devices would instantly double my monthly data cost.
No thanks.
Other than that consideration I can't say since I don't own those devices.

As far as I know my data plan is not grandfathered, but I could be wrong.
How does the network know the difference? I mean, T-Mobile can't even tell I'm using an HD2. Last they knew I was using a 2G iPhone.
Is it because the G2 is 4G, and I'd have to update my data plan for 4G?
I believe it is related to the IMEI of the device, nova.
The HD2 isn't a native android device so it sneaks by the filter.
If you're already paying for an android plan then this won't have any effect on you.
I have 2 lines of web-to-go unlimited data @ $10/month each which I'd like to keep as long as I can.

Haha! Seriously.
Does anyone know what the standout ROM is for the G2 right now?
As far as speed?
I'm currently using HyperDroid GBX on my HD2 and it rocks.
I had a galaxy s for a month before getting an hd2, the galaxy s has far superior multi touch screen control and runs games, gameloft, FIFA etc, a lot better than the hd2 ever will, the galaxy lacks led flash/torch, the GPs is rather hit and miss, the screen is superb although at night you just can't get the brightness low enough, the device runs laggy unless you flash a custom rom, physical build quality is poor, but the phone is a lot lighter than the hd2, I would say if your a gamer, go for the galaxy, if you use GPs a lot don't even think about a galaxy, hope that helps a little.

Well, I've used GPS a total of two times in the 6 months I've had the HD2.
So that's not an issue for me. I've had some mixed feedback on the Galaxy S. It seems like a really good phone. Wish I could try one, but I don't know anyone that has one.
