Whatever your kernel allows. If u have the newer version of set CPU u can overclock only so high depending on ur phone. jus so it doesn't explode in your hand. But only certain kernels act right wit overclocking. It doesn't really matter because your always gonna change the settings anyway from my experience. Just play wit the gauges and presents jus to see how ur phone responds to it

Like for charging purpose I had it set to 1200 max and 200 min and when I pick up my phone it was pretty hot I unplugged it real fast

As long as your battery temp doesn't go over 110 u should be ok but if ii go to a tab in set CPU it should tell you what ur kernel allows as far overclocking. But u should look into switching kernels because it may not coincide with your Rom.

SetCPU configuration

Hello,
I just installed SetCPU and configured some profiles. I'd like to hear comments about them:
Screen Off 83/83
Charging 667/83
Battery < 15% 83/83
Battery < 30% 222/83
What do you think of setting 83/83? Too low?
How can I overclock?
I'd like to set a profile for temperature controlling, what is considered a high temp?

Using 83/83 was way too slow. When I had screen off and wanted to turn it back on, it would take too long.
I'm currently using these profiles (in order off priority):
Charging 667/83 (ondemand)
Screen off 222/83 (conservative)
Battery <30% 222/83 (conservative)
I haven't figured out how to overclock yet.

Not yet. But now that the first view custom roms came up i believe we will find one coder that's building a custom kernel.

That's exciting! Are the custom roms you refer to the ones from samfirmware?
Nope... I refer to the real custom roms. Aosp, jpb light, jpa hybrid... And currently there seems to be an eclair rom with ext4 fs is in work... Have Look in the development section.

current setup gives me bout 45-52 hours of usage time.
this includes around 200 msgs a day(outgoing), a total of about 1 hour wifi on time...and around 30 mins bluetooth on.plus an "always screen on " option while texting...

$brightness is minimum....always.can increase using widgets when u wanna read or check sumthin out, then revert back to min.

#sceen filter(to reduce brightness below android's set level, good at nite)

Yeah, but we need someone who's crazy enough to try to overclock his i5800 without any information on the CPU X)
SetCPU lagged my phone like crazy all the time it was on.
Launcher pro+SetCPU was a damn nightmare, apps took close to 9 secs to load.

Do you get lag after turning the screen on?
I used to have anipet Aquarium Live Wallpaper + ADW Launcher EX, and had huge lag when turning the screen on - with 222/83. I stopped using the Live Wallpaper, and it got better, but there's still lag sometimes. I don't know how heavy ADW Launcher EX is, if it is it's fault or not.
Using performance scaling, if I'm not mistaken (the documentation page of setcpu is down) forces the cpu to always run at the max frequency, so it'd be the same as setting the max and min frequency as the same value, right?
I'll give a try at using conservative instead of ondemand and see if I get less lag, though I'd expect exactly the opposite!
What's the point on downclocking the CPU while using the phone ? I mean, 333mhz makes me think i bought a chinese phone (And not a cool one like the ZTE Blade).

i totally agree, i would love to able to overclock it, not underclock it
i have undeclocked it coz i want a longer "ON" time...i am texting and callin ppl most of the time so battery lasts jus for a day.i don't wanna charge it everyday.plus using at 333 isnt so bad..i don't play games(much)...and even when i do(angry birds,paper toss) it works fine...u will get used to it....and whats the point in overclocking this phone? with a crappy resolution no HD game will run on it.
the only thing that sucks at low speeds is the gallery.however this can be "solved" by using the Quickpic app.it's better organized and hella fast.but it lacks the fancy looks...

A bit useless.. But there is a way to clock it at 523mhz if we read the CPU's specifications... That could be cool..

Wow thanks for this. I used these settings except for the last one (underclocking when the cellphone is being used)
Last time I recharged was 63 hours ago, and battery indicator still shows 50% left! I have:
- Watched an episode of Kenny vs Spenny (640x480)
- Played ~1h of games
- Surfing + downloading ~30min on Wi-Fi
- Installed ~ 10 apps
- Texted about 50 messages
- Made about a total of 10 minutes of calls
- Sent songs through bluetooth for.. ~10 minutes
- Listened to music for about ~30 mins
Still 50% left? Amazing. Of course this can (or is) a problem with the crappy indicator and it can quickly decrease to ~15 in a heartbeat, but it still is pretty amazing.
Phone says it has been on for 73 hours, I wonder if that's the actual time I recharged it for the last time, or if It's the last time it was charged?
Once again thanks for those profiles. First time I used the app I reckon setting the same but I used OnDemand scaling (What's the difference between these btw?) and It lagged like hell when I turned the screen on again. None of that happens now, the phone works the same way as if it had normal clock speeds.
Oh and I don't use 3G and I've got APNDroid blocking all internet connections. I wonder if that does anything to the battery life?
EDIT: Now I used some bluetooth for 15 mins and made few calls and it got bumped down to 15% and told me to recharge. Guess It'd still work for about 6 hours on stand-by but still the battery life for me was ~67hrs, whilst being ~48 before.

[Q] Battery

So I have my phone running Ice Glacier 1.1.6 everything is fine but like I see a significant drop in battery from not much use. and it says display is taking most of the battery power. I have auto brightness on and not many widgets.. Any ideas ??
Do as I did change your blacklight settings and don't use auto bright. Then disable some service using 3rd party apps and trust me there is alot of them that you will never use or need so get rid of them from even starting and if it even restarts have it shutdown. I am also using IGv1.1.6 as I flashed it last night and normally comparing it with IGv1.1.5 its better. Also scale your mCPU with SetCPU and when idle underclock it normally its 800mhz on avg load. Don't waste your battery trying to OC it lol just so you can brag about benchmark. Do this 3 you will see improvement, most folks always talk about uptime but we talk about awake time as thats what really matters.

Set cpu is a program you can download that allows you to change the speed your cpu runs at. U can even make profiles so say when ur battery reaches a certain level it will under clock the cpu to run at a lower level to increase your battery life. It also allows you to overclock your phone to run faster but at a significant loss to your battery life.

Oh set cpu isn't free now but there are others on the market that do the same thing that are.

What most ppl do is set a profile to run at the minimum speed when the phone is turned off to increase batt life..also, use a reasonable on demand setting for all other usage..no need to do crazy overclocking if you dont need the power

Try installing an overstock kernel, like Eugene373's Deadhorse Kernel, then you can download One Click Lag Fix from the market.
Just install a kernel that has oc capabilities and use set CPU to adjust the frequencies

after you have the oc kernel installed go into set cpu and set an audible alarm and for when your temp goes above 115 Fahrenheit, in that profile have it drop your clock speed down to 1000 or 800 to help your phone cool off before reactivating the full oc. Ive never had any problems with the cpu getting to hot oc'd to 1.2 thats not to say you wont.

All you need is a kernel that supports OC ie. (DoW, Tigersblood, Overstock, Dragon) you should be golden but double check compatibility with whatever ROM ur running.
I use "set cpu" to torque it up to 1.2(or whatever the kernel OC's to) Then i use "SystemPanel Lite" to check and make sure its actually OCing. In the system app it has a CPU Clock in the top right corner which monitors ur current cpu. When the system app opens it has a list of active applications i simply move the list up and down repeatedly really fast and watch the "CPU Clock" if it maxes out at 1.2 or whatever its good to go. I remember one time(cant remember what kernel)but set cpu showed 1.2 or 1.4 and even in system CPU info it showed OCed but if you did like i just described the CPU Clock never went above 1000Mhz. Like it was just showing as OC even tho it really wasn't it was really weird the clock would max out at 1000Mhz with dead space above it like it could go over but never would.

i never knew you could set audible alarms(guess i never really looked into it) thanks for that! running DoW221 OC to 1.4 i used to see my temps hit 120-130 it would freak me out! but never had any problems except for batt life avg 6-7hrs.
Personally my best OC ROM/kernel setup to this date has been MALICE[EDT]+Tigersblood(any release) everything works and great batt life for a OC kernel

Just make sure you backup before trying. Some Vibrants cannot handle overclocking (and there's no real way to know until you try). Mine is one of those, and if it can't handle it, an Odin to stock will be in your immediate future.

Preferred Overclocking Utility

I'm running Bionix V 1.3.2 with the Immortality 2.1 kernel.
What I'm curious about is everyone's preferred overclocking app?
From what it looks like, it comes down to SetCPU, No-frills, Tegrak, or CPU tuner.
No frills advertises doing the overclocking without running in the background- which is appealing.
What are your thoughts?
Im not familiar with anything other then set cpu. I like it because I set up profiles for charging, screen off and temp. Ive used it for a while even when not overclocking, just for the screen off profile.

So it looks like there are a couple of categories the overclocking apps can be divided in to- those with profile management and without, and those for the SGS only.
Profile Management: SetCPU ($1.95), Tegrak ($1.95), CPU Tuner (Free)
Without: No Frills (Free), Voltage Control (Free/$3.84)
Both Tegrak and Voltage Control are specific to the SGS family- why would I want to buy a program that only works with specific phones when I can get a solution that will work with all my future phones?
I know SetCPU is the most commonly used solution, but I keep reading so many complaints in the forums. Does anyone have any experience with CPU tuner in comparison to the others? I'll at least tinker with it when I have time since I'll have more than 15 minutes to see if I like it.

Instability. Lagged my phone even with oc only up to 1.2

Sounds like your kernel is not compatible with setcpu =]
Some are not and votage control is preferred.
I'm on MIUI revamped Xx-2 with glitch 11 anf haven't had a problem with setcpu.

Setcpu because in the "About? " it has says "Its over 9000! " plus its simple to use.

Well I'm using voltage control right now because its tailored to the hummingbird and I like the undervolt settings. Once you find the right voltages, your battery will be (more) amazing.
However, I've used setcpu since I've had my htc hero and it works wonders...at first when the galaxy s came out, there were conflicts and setcpu couldn't tune the hummingbird(atleast for the Epic 4g, the Galaxy S for Sprint), but that's since been worked on.
Setcpu is very straightforward. When you start it up, just tap autodetect speeds and it'll have a slider for min/max and yyou just slide it to the appropriate speeds. Then you use "governors" that dictate how the processor clocks...for example, on "conservative" the cpu scales up to the speed it needs to process what you're doing and slows down really fast when not in use. "Ondemand" is basically the same thing, but it scales high up and then lowers itself to the needed speed. "Performance" keeps your cpu clocked at its highest speed and keeps it there. Its good to run performance when you need to run benchmarks or do a lot of stuff on your phone at once, because it kills the battery faster (obviously)
Just try em out...setcpu is free on xda, just look for it in the apps section on android general I think or the g1 boards
Voltage control, be wary about, because if you mess with the ettings and don't know what you're doing, it'll corrupt your phone.

I like voltage control too and pimp my CPU mainly because SetCpu hardly ever supports the kernels I use and when it does it gives me reboots

When you use VC, do it one clock speed at a time. The voltage slider moves in -25mV increments. Each processor is different. For example, my phone can handle 1.4ghz unervolted by -50mV but if I put it down one more notch, my phone freezes and its FC galore. So its good to have a backup.
If you're not turned away by the amount of time it takes to tune VC, then it'll be worth it. You just have to thoroughly test the phone each time you undervolt to make sure its stable before you set it as Boot. To test just scroll around and run acouple of benchmarks.
For example, when I started my UV, I started with 1.4ghz and worked my way down to 1.3, 1.2, 1.1, 1.0, .8 and .6 ghz. Slide it to 1400MHz and then slide the voltage bar one notch to the left to uv it by 25mV. Hit apply and then run smartbench, quadrant, neocore, linpack, w/e just to make sure your phone can handle it. If it can, move it one more notch and test it out. Rinse repeat for the rest
Setcpu is way more user friendly and does what its supposed to, but vc is for power users I guess

How to get kernels set up perfect for your phone

This is a guide I have typed up on how to get the best display , sound, and battery out of your phone...
First you need to set up voodoo color with the voodoo control application on the market.
The way I did this was turn each setting all the way up and turned down gradually until the color went away. Now my display has never looked better.
Voodoo color settings differ from phone to phone due to screen use and the fact that different colors are different on certain phones. My phone is less blue than others, so I recommend that you follow that technique and do it yourself.

My next thing I am going to talk about is sound.
In some kernels the drivers for voodoo are currently built into the kernel but not accessible via the UI.In cm7, voodoo sound doesn't exist at all. I purchased the payed version of voodoo control and the loading of the driver via that works without squealing. If you need voodoo sound, buy it. To get optimal sound, you need to tweak according to headphones. Plug in your headphones and play a song that you like with good quality audio. Now tweak the bass boost and equalizer (if your media player has one). Left side is bass(background stuff and shake), right is treble (clear voice). I usually keep the middle low and sides high.
If you have a phone that can go to 1.5ghz with ease, these are the settings I recommend.
Min: 100
Max: 1000
100 -150
200 -125
400-800 -75
Remove 900
1000 -100
Next, speed and battery. Get the voltage control app for this. Use ondemand for voltage testing it gets a wide range of frequencies. At the lower frequencies, undervolt starting at -150. Lock the phone, let it sit for a minute, if it froze, bump the voltage up to, -125. After the lowest step is set up good, change the other steps starting at the last voltage slide around the voltage control application and then idle a bit, if it freezes, move the voltage up... do the same for the next steps, starting with the voltage of the last.
Now you can test speed with governor and schedulers. I use ondemand and sio but most like lagfree and vr.
Overclocking is an option for speed but I advise against it due to.horrible, the risk of data corruption, and the decreased ability and life of your phone.

Governers tell the processor when to go to certain speeds. Comservitive keeps it lazy and not moving around much. Lagfree keeps it high when the screen is on. Performance keeps it always at the highest. Ondemand keeps it at a mix of speed and performance. Smartass and savagedzen make it low when the screen is off and scales according to demand.

Marcusant, I've been thinking about this a bunch lately. When people use profiles in something like SetCPU aren't they setting up redundant commands? In theory a well programmed governor would notice the state the phone was in and adjust according to the governor's master settings. By setting a profile would it be like having a governor running within other governors?
Profiles really **** **** up... the processor will go wherever it needs to go.
