I just got my Google Ion yesterday. The trackball has a light inside of it that blinks when the phone is ringing, but doesn't seem to light up for anything else. Is there any way to get it to blink for other types of notifications like SMS or Email? It's much easier to see than the little LED on the speaker.
my trackball does blink when getting a sms, and then it blinks sometimes afterwards.
Well damn. I've scoured the options and I can't find mention of it anywhere. Is it possible that the Google Ion version of the firmware omits this ability for some reason?
I also would like an utility like for the led to assign colors to events....
For the LED you should try "Missed Call" app in the market.
Cheers.

Thanks but I was saying that i would like and application LIKE that one for the LED but for the trackball
Bye
Ahm..yes, you are right. Should have read every word you wrote...
The notification box comes up, but only for a while. After that there is only the single line on Home screen.
Is there a fix to keep it until manually dismissed?

You mean the "Miss call notification" icon at the top bar? It stays there until you open up call history, and see the missed call.
No, azahidi, I did not mean that.
When I miss a call, I get "1 missed call" text on the Home screen in the line above the Calendar. The green LED also flashes. That stays on until I do something.
About 3 seconds later, a large white notification box appears at the bottom. That only stays for several seconds and disappears. I would like it to stay until I dismiss it.
For older people, using the phone without reading glasses, the larger the notification the better. With my distance glasses on, it is not that easy to see the icons. Specially outdoors.
Anyway, this is not very important, but if it was possible to do, I would do it.

Sorry Joe, I musunderstood you. Now I understand what you wish. I am not sure if that's possible at all. I customised the "Missed Call" icon at top bar to be in bright red round background.. a bit better than white.
I suppose I will have to get used to the flashing LED.
Can it be made to flash faster?
Joe
Hi,
The led in htc hero blinks for only 5 minutes after a e-mail is received (and not checked). This is awfully, since the whole point is check thru the led if any event was missed. The ppc has a registry hack to make the led blinks to infinite (or till you check the message), so, any workaround for hero?
Thanks.
PS: We already don't have colored leds, and now this, very disappointed with HTC.
Sell your phone then.

This doesn't quite resolve the issue, as this program doesn't use the trackball LED, but instead uses the green LED in the speaker. Also, it doesn't have settings for emails, which it seems andreofgyn would like.
When I get some time, I will do some digging around and see if I can find the trackball settings in the system. There's a good chance it will require a rooted phone to adjust the setting. I'm working on a custom bootscreen atm, once, I've got that sorted out, I'll look into this.
EDIT: Alright, maybe andreofgyn wasn't referring to the trackball LED. I just realized that when the Hero gets an email, the speaker-LED is actually the one that blinks, and not the trackball like all our other notifications.
Myself, I'm more concerned with the trackball LED for missed calls and text messages only lasting 5 minutes, so that's probably what I'll look into first. If people want to provide feedback about specific LED's (eg. would you like the trackball LED for emails, or is the speaker LED ok?) then I can see what I can find.
Okay E-Mail isn´t supportet but SMS and call. Is it difficult to make a option more for E-Mail?
The trackball isn´t support from any programm. By example Handcent SMS has got a option, but it doesn´t work. HTC release a developer kit, but nothing work yet. So when you will make it, I say thank you!

Yeah, I was refering to "speaker-LED", but if you can do unlimited flash with the trackball LED, it's good too. Missed Reminder is a good app, but like craig0r said, no e-mail reminders.
I have a rooted phone and can test anything. Thanks for all good will answers

Hm... maybe this will automatically get fixed in Modaco when they move to a newer base ROM.
I also have a telus htc hero with the modaco rom and the blinking LED/trackball only blinks for about 5m than stops

Green led does not blink at all.
is there any solution to this other than using a third party app?
Hi I know there is an excellent app out which allows a little red square to appear on the screen when you get a notification.
I miss a notification led but was thinking could the lights for the touch buttonds be used instead, I was thinking used the menu button for email/text messages and the back button for missed calls as they kind of look like the right sort of symbols anyway, plus the screen wont need to be turned on at all ( the screen does produce some light when it is only a black background)
I will be taking tomorrow off work to attempt to learn android and possible make a simple live wallpaper but if anyone can point me in the right direction I may look at doing this also
a simple search pops up the original topic

Doesn't this phone have a LED notification feature??
Why should it have?
Isn't that obvious..?: To notify the user of missed calls and new text/email messages...

The lock screen does a pretty good job of keeping you up to date on whats been happening. I didn't even realise any new smart phones had LED notifications.
That response is hilariously absurd. I have to actually pick my phone up and look to see if something is happening?
SWYPED from my SUPASONIC
I have to say - I had the HTC Diamond before my Omnia and this is the one feature I miss.
The Phone is a million times better in every other aspect, so I will oversee this flaw

No, it doesn't. Unfortunately, this is one of the features I miss from my HD2.
But there are dozens of things that are better, so I'll get along with it
Just noticed that. I've been adapting to the icons and never checked.
I like the icons it seems, with Txt, E-mail, Multiple accounts and apps with their own notifications. Wouldn't want to have to memorise each beep. dash. dot for what i missed in this day and age, the icon tells me in one glance what I've missed with a symbol, maybe coloured dots would be the same but, i did wonder how do you not look at the phone to see the LED notification?
That i wanna learn
Point explained
We're talking hardware design here. As far as I can see from inspecting the device, it DOES have LEDs under the buttons, which means that it is INDEED possible to implement a LED notification hack of some sort... like it's been done on the Samsung Galaxy Tab, for instance (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=830782)!
The advantage: A slow-blinking LED will enable the user to become notified of a new text/email message/missed call by just glancing at the phone from afar, ergo not having to pick the phone up AND turn on the screen.
It's an epic fail, in my opinion, that this cannot be found in the otherwise great hardware design of the Omnia 7, as all well-crafted smartphones these days incorporate such functionality (e.g. the HTC Hero).

If someone writes such an app, and it does not consume much more power, it would be a reason for me to do the unlock...
I guess there is no chance that this app would be approved via the official way?
Just realized: Someone's actually made an app for submitting and voting for already submitted ideas for improvements to WP7. It's called "My WP7 Idea", and yes, it already contains my idea. USE IT! (and please, please, please VOTE for this)
Does anyone know if there's a LED under the middle touch navigation button (the one with the Windows logo)? Would be cool, if this could light up with notifications, wouldn't it...?
Theres not a LED. Only the other 2 buttons lighten up. I don't think that's a problem tough.
You could think of a procedure like back button enlightened when a new sms is there, search button when you have a missed call or something.
Close to the light sensor i saw another something,i dont know what is it for..but on a video on youtube..i saw it blinking in blue..when the user used bluetooth for calling...anyone noticed that?
we got 4" led display !
can notification led just be emulated by a small blinking square right in the center of the screen ?

Yes. Ludicrous, isn't it.
I don't understand how this could bother you so much, unless you like people to notice that you are popular. You should have looked at the specs before you bought it - seems to be an ongoing problem people have with phones.

you can't be serious? since the dawn of man (ok,mobile), a phone has had a visual indicator that you have missed an event. This is like having an alarm clock with no alarm. you just have to keep waking up and switching the screen on!
I've recently got my hands on an Omnia 7 and today I realised I was missing emails, sms etc because there was no led flashing. I thought it was broken. Turns out it isn't... the logic of samsung is.

You could go to settings and set a sound for new emails (not set by default) and see if it's better, it vibrates too
