There's two type of ROM upgrades: Operating System ROM upgrades and Radio Stack Upgrades.
Radio Stack Upgrades:
Radio Stack upgrades are distributed by the devices resellers. They come in packages with names that may or may not include "Programme B" or "RSU", and they are usually about 2 MB in size. Version numbers are a mess, and lower version numbers do not mean earlier versions. There's at least three different paths of version numbering out there, and the version number on the file doesn't always match the version number displayed at boot and by 'Device Information'.
The official Radio Stack Upgrade process is a mess. We've seen way too many people wreck their devices doing nothing weird or strange. Our advice regarding Radio Stack upgrades is to get them from your own device provider (so you know it's for you type of device: 900/1800 or 900/1900 MHz), and to only upgrade if you know the upgrade will fix known issues that are bothering you.
Operating System Upgrades:
Operating System upgrades are distributed by the resellers in packages whose names may contain "Programme A" or "RUU" (to confuse things, RUU stands for "Radio Unit Upgrade", even though they do not upgrade the Radio part but the PDA part). Operating System upgrades are usually 15 MB in size, and unless you use our utility 'adaptROM', they will only install on phones sold by specific resellers in specific markets.
In this community, the OS is sometimes also distributed as .nb1 file, for use with our XDArit tool. These files are often zipped to about 15 MB, uncompressed they are 32MB (well: 32 MB minus 256 kB actually).
We've seen a number of people doing terrible things to their devices by upgrading their OS ROMs. Here's what we've seen:
- It appears someone is distributing an EXE file for the PPC2003 ROM that contains a part of the OS in the spot where the bootloader needs to be. People that use this EXE to upgrade to 2003 may experience problems immediately or later on, possible making their device unusable.
- We've observed our XDArit tool in the hands of people that should not be using it. If you don't know what a DOS box is, or think you can rename .nb1 files to .nb0, or if you generally do not feel technically proficient, do not use XDArit. It's as simple as that.
(We also blame ourselves for this: XDArit is very counter-intuitive in some parts, and is long-due for an overhaul....)
- Apart from the above, there seem to be problems for people getting back from PPC2003 to earlier versions of the OS. We've been busy doing other things, and we haven't really researched this yet.
- It seems the exe files Jeff makes are OK, and if they aren't, people would know pretty quickly. We advise against running exe-files from others until we've found what causes this 'bootloader mangling' we've observed.
Thanks for your warnings. I just checked my device information. It reads rom version 3;14.06 ENG, Rom date 10/01/02, Radio Version T313. Being not technical at all. Your advice is not to upgrade the Rom or de radio version.
But that leaves me with some problems. F.i. when I try to synchronize with Outlook on my pc. I keep losing mails. The only mails being synchronized at all are those from my inbox. A series of attachments cannot be converted and there is no way to know which mails they are in. I was also hoping that a rom-update would solve my constant memory-lack.
Are there any other solutions?

Upgrade radio fail
Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately I read it a bit too late.
I download ROM from O2 site, program A (3.20.06ENG) and program B(4.21). Upgarded my xda with program A, after reset it works. When upgrade the radio program B it hang for half hour. After reset the xda does not boot!
Is there a way i can flash back the ROM so that i can use back my xda?
Original version ROM 3.17.03ENG and radio 3.14.
Thanks in advance.
After upgrad radio from 4.16 to 4.21, My O2 does not reset or hardreset normally. After a long process, I get a blank screen with only input icon on the lowwer right corner. How to fix it now?
problem solved.

If you push the power buttom and than do a hard/cold reset do you get a bootloader ???
If so you need a storage card and put a good rom on it.

Re: Upgrade radio fail
I got a problem yesterday night, while trying to updgrade the ROM with the XDA developers Special Edition ROM v1.2, I got the message from the tool saying it will take up to 5 min and a scroll bar appeared on the XDA and not removing it from its base.
But I accidently removed it (in fact, I caught my foot on the damn wire and everything went to the floor).
Now nothing works, except the diagnostic bootloader when I reset and press on button. Hard reset changes noting.
The screen when I hard-reset it shows the scrollbar that was displayed when I tried to upgrade it.
ActiveSync does not recognize it anymore (PC beeps when the XDA is put in craddle, but it does go further).
Any idea how to put back original ROM content ? I have backup of the content made with Active Sync.
I own a SX-56 and subscribe to Rogers AT&T; I guess my config is identical to a AT&T phone, as it's written on top
Any suggestion will be welcomed

You need a storage card (32 MB or more SD or MMC will do) and a reader/writer for it,
than write a rom on the card, put it in your devices an start the boot loader, than if everthing went good it will ask you if you wanted to update the rom.

Bootloader not recognising sd card image
I am having the same problem. When pressing power and reset, bootloader shows v 5.17 GSM fail.
I have an sd card which has a new bootloader and nb1 file on it. I do a reset with the card in the slot and i get the same screen v517 GSM fail. From what i have read i should be getting an option to upload the new rom.
Can some one help me out please?
If I currently turn the device on normally activesync does not recognise the device.....
The sd card I have was configured using the xdirt programme and it appears to have worked as the sd card is shows not formatted now...
Thanks for all the info and warnings, just got my XDA II today and Im not too hot with it yet so I guess I will be leaving the ROM's alone for the time being

We have several system where the GSM rom is toast. Is there a way to get a GSM Rom to SD w/o using the PC Monitor program?
The systems will successfully bootup and we have tried loading the GSM rom using RSUpgrade, but it fails after 1%.
Is there any other way to recover the GSM Rom?
You may try speaking to Cgigate on this forum, he has hardware methods of programming the chips directly, whether it works for the radio stack as well as the bootloader and rom you will need to ask him.
Instaead of Hi I say you are great people
So the case is... I just need to have working Qtek 1010 with SOME additional soft on it inside a ROM...
I've read many pages in this forum and I'm able to find too many ways to change my ROM. I'm totaly confused.
I work for extremaly big worldwide company and they gave me q Qtek, told me to use it, gave me one simple application and web link... so I do.
But the Qtek is much powerfull than that so I need to flash my ROM.
Now comes a question: where can I find one document how to prepare for it, what tools do I need, how to do it... I know after some tries I will be confident enough to do such stuff easlily, my problem is I have only one try, they will make me w trouble if I screw my company recource.
I understand you had milion similar questions like that. Basicly I need help how to flash so I can be sure 100% not less that I can recover in case of trouble. I hope you understand I'm afraid to do it because lack of experience and you are able to tell me if I should try to flash...
or maybe it's better for me to ask my boss to by me a 512 MB SD and install all additional soft on it and stop worring about memory?
I'd appreciate any opinion... you are the best and I'm just new to this bussines...
Get an sd card, backup existing rom to sd card, very easy to do by bootloader method. Enter bootloader by holding down power while inserting stylus in the reset hole on the bottom left of pda then press top right function key, then choose ce to sd. Once you have done this you can check if it has in fact backed up your rom by putting sd card in the pda, enter bootloader, it will then give the option to program the rom, just remove the card and push the reset with stylus again, the other method to check a working backup is to put the sd card in the pda, the pda will ask to format it, say no and remove it. Once you have a backup you can either use xdatools to copy it to your pc or keep it in a safe place, no more files must be written to this card otherwise it will be rendered useless, if you wish to reuse the card sometime it will need formatting. Once you have your backup, go to www.yorch.net, cook yourself a rom and download it in the exe format, this will do a normal install from your pc while connected to pda via activesync, if it messes up you always have your backup. Once you become more proficient at using xdatools you might wish to try out lots of different roms until you are happy with the result, you can go on to sd card flashing which is a much better way of programming rom and much less prone to error because it doesnt rely on a pc connection. I would advise you to leave the radio stack alone, if you can make and receive call ok leave it alone. Have a thorough look around the forum before proceeding. Its good fun to program your pda and you can make it a much better tool, but make sure you always have a way out if things go wrong.
www.yorch.net not working... is there a place like that?
Hi!
I read the above post, one of the clearest here, and I almost got the confidence to finally do this ROM update...
But:
1) Can't find the www.yorch.net website where I could "cook myself a rom and dowload it in a .exe format"
2)It's still not very clear to me what exactly cooking a ROM means: it concerns the OS (the version 1.53, 1.72 type of stuff), the extended ROM (the default programs u get starting after and hard reset like the SW for the camera etc) or both?
Thanks!!!
Chris
Another ROM Kitchen
Try the following ROM Kitchen http://lumpistefan.dyndns.org/
I noticed that you have the XDAII. Now, someone please correct me if I'm wrong but the directions above and the ROM kitchens are all for the XDA I or Wallaby version.

What's the kitchen for XDA II
THANK YOU!
I was starting on the wrong foot... :-( :?
Anyway a couple of more question:
1) Is there a place like that for XDA II Kitchen? Is my undestanding of what a kitchen is correct?
2) The process for ROM backup outlined above, is still correct for XDA II?
Thanks!
Chris
I'm in the same boat as you CChris. I've been diligently a daily searching through the numerous topics on this site looking for similar information. I haven't found it yet - or at least nothing not-to-super-technical. I do know that you get to the bootloader by pressing the power button, reset button, and down on the toggle at the same time rather than the Wallaby way of the power and reset buttons only. It also seems that there are issues regarding 'country' and that it requires software to get around this. I haven't found the software yet - the links that I've seen all point to "itsme's" website which is currently down.
You can read the thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=9053&highlight=
Hopefully, someone with a lot more knowledge than me can go over updating the XDA II as clearly as cruisin-thru did for the XDA I.
The instructions on http://wiki.xda-developers.com/wiki/HimalayaRomFlashing are correct.
Unfortunately, there was an issue where the wiki removed the ~ from itsme's website's address. It's been replaced with %7e and now the link works.
If you download a ROM from the same vendor as your device (e.g. Qtek ROM on Qtek device, iMate ROM on iMate device, etc.) you don't need to use these instructions, you can just install the ROM upgrade from your vendor.
If you want to use the latest ROM (from iMate) and your device isn't an iMate, you need to decrypt, change the "country" code, encrypt, and then run the upgrade.
You can also edit the extended ROM when flashing, but it's easier to use itsme's extRom Tools. See http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=8422
You do NOT need to flash the ROM if you are not experiencing problems, or if you are experiencing problems which the new ROM also has (for example ugly cleartype fonts, which may be fixed without flashing). Flashing the ROM may void your warrantee. You will lose all your data when you upgrade, and you should not restore a backup, only your my documents folder.
If you are a newbie, it may be best not to flash your ROM. If you typed in itsme in google, you would have found his xs4all address as the third link, and would have quickly found out his site wasn't down at all, but the link was just wrong.
Just a warning: the things that could go wrong when flashing are potentially much worse than a wrong URL, and the answer to those problems won't be the third link in google.

I read this..... From this forum

I only have two things to add:
1. RSUpgrade _fails_ much more often without SIM card inside the phone;
2. Your battery should be fully charged (100%) before you start the upgrade, since if it does fail, the battery will stop charging, and the next time you attempt to upgrade, you may not be able to get past 1%, even if you have power adapter plugged in. If you happen to have another XDA, you could swap batteries, or use an extended battery, if you have one.
Good luck...
And MrDollyMaker wrote
I never do the RSUpgrade with a SIM in my phone.... Never failed unless I tried to do it with the EXE thing. But I do agree to make sure you have a full battery, but since it already is at the 1% error, you can charge it with the charger if you do not do anything when the error comes up. just let it sit and charge.
This mean i must charge battery in another and wait until show green led light in another O2 and swap battery to dead xda.... And ran rsupgrade.exe this way is make me pass 1% ????? Or not... I have no idea to repair it... Please somebody advice me to repair...
This is my trouble
1. Xda in first case can go to today screen and use pda.. But cannot sync with pc coz it's show cannot find .... And after try to another rom in 2002 or 2003...it hank and show blue color on top of screen ...but have owner name calendar and contact .... I cannot go to start menu coz cannot align screen ...but in xda-developers ser12 that mae me go to today screen and use file explorer
2.xda in second case can go to today screen, sync with pc,copy 4 files to xda by active sync but cannot pass ...1% i didn't flash os rom to another coz 4.00.11 can pass to today screen...
Please someone guide me to fix 2 dead xda for my best friends in my life.... I beg u..
Sorry to long story and very bad english...
And i hope for help ..... Best regard...
anybody ???????
any idea ? help me please
It looks like you have tried just about everything, rs 4.21 was the baddest of the bad when it was released, the tales of woe are endless where that radio stack is concerned. There is a person on this forum that can fix your xda but he lives in Canada and it may not be worth the trouble. I think his nickname is cgigate.

Contact your dealer for the nearest repair centre. They will replace your radio with a new one using a special SD-card. This will work regardless of your current radio.
thx for reply me
but repsir center in my country is say only word... can't fix it u must change mainboard.... Dumb center........
now i can sync with pc
last try to flash rom in first case to 4.01.16 original roby t mobile....until finish i can go to today screen and align screen......and..can...sync dead xda in 1 case with pc...and copy 4 files to xda....run rsupgrade.exe...bad luck cannot pass 1% same in all lastest radio all of version
( asia,at&t,t-mobile)and when i flash back to another rom like a xda-developre ser 1.2 that cannot show align screen.... but jump to today screen without align screen ?.....and cannot sync to pc ...
i have 2 rom to bring me in today screen ...and use file explorer another rom except this make me hank on boot screen..//
1.xda-dev ser 1.2 cannot sycn
2.4.01.16 can sync but cannot pass 1% to upgrade
may be tomorrow i will trow it in a bin ....... thx for any reply
You need to replace the radio stack using a special SD-card, and your dealer (or a repair shop) should definitely be able to do this for you. This is the normal way for the service guys to do an upgrade, they won't rely on the USB sync to work.
I had the same thing happening to a friend of mine, and we got his device updated for free.
thx for reply
thx bamse ..... for reply but i think people in xda-dev.. so clever more than my repair center : (
hello all,
After spending some night to test on the xda1. I found that if your radio stack error, you can never get the radio stack fix in any way. So, don't try it because i waste your time. We can only fix it when we have the sc card radio stack fix by using the bootloader. (there is no way to fix it in window)
SX56 GSM ERROR YOU CAN FIX IT
In Some cases, you can fix this yourself, read this thread (last line of this post links to it), and try my solution, or PM me and I will make arrangements to fix it for you.
Too many people are getting this error, SIEMENS only wants your money, everyone is looking for an answer. It took some time, but I fixed mine, and I'll help anyone who needs it do the same for their SX56.

i have notice there is a new radio ROM 1.03, how do i upgrade my radio ROM? any online doc? i want to try the new radio rom because my phone signal is worse than 2s
It wont improve your siganl at all but its worth having the newest version ...
You will need to upgrade the whole thing, as you cant just upgrade the radio rom seperately.
check here for Pugs upgrade mod http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=25801 its on the 2nd or third page in.
Try this (can't be sure if it'll work though so try this at your own risk).
Download this file below:
ftp://xda:[email protected]rs.co...ified XDA_IIi_Upgrade_v1.11.162 Radio_1.3.rar
Un-RAR up the archive using Winrar to a folder on your desktop. Open the folder that you have just extracted and delete MS_.NBF and NK.NBF
Backup all your data (especially contacts and personal documents) to your PC or preferably memory card as updating will essentially perform a hard reset and wipe everything on your alpine (except storage and memory card).
Connect your alpine to your pc and run MaUpgradeUT_noid.exe. The update will fail, just run it a second time and it should work. This should in theory upgrade just the radio stack.
If you're able to upload the ROM update that you are using to the following folder then I will be able to Make sure that the Rom will work before you try it on your alpine. I can't download any of the asia rom's from here but they will be on the CD that came with your alpine.
ftp://ftp.xda-developers.com/O2 Alpine Roms/Asia Roms/
Thanks in advance if you can do this.

This means your device is in bootloader mode - keep the device connected via actisync and open the file you were installing once again on the oc - should work normally now... be patient

Hi this happened to me during the last two stages (Extended and CE) of upgrade. It seems to cause some kind of power dip through USB as my usb mouse stopped working in one incident. This is what I did to perform the upgrade:
1st attempt:
Followed instructions with MAUpgrade_noid.exe etc.
2nd run of program worked and the re-flash carried on going.
Flash stage 1 (radio stack) OK
Flash Stage 2 (Extended) 34% and power reset.
XDA IIi turned on with hard reset but no customisations (I guess the extended section was corrupt after partial flash).
Started again (from stage 1) and this time reset at 81% during stage 2.
Again the xda turned on ok so this time I removed the radio stack file from the upgrade directory (radio_.nbf - make a copy) this means the flash only upgrades stage 2 and 3.
This time it powered off during winCE upgrade (stage 3). This time the xda just stayed on the splash screen. After initial panic I put the device in bootloader mode (power+rest+action button) and docked it in the cradle. I then removed the extended flash file (ms_.nbf I think) so the only 'nbf' file left in the directory was nk_nbf (winCE) and ran the upgrade program again. The program then went on to upgrade just that part of the rom.
I would like to stress I am not an expert I gleaned this approach from one of the threads in this forum. I had also made a rom backup of my original rom and thought if I cannot get the new one in I knew how to restore the old one.
If I was you I would do the following:
1. Copy the whole directory for the rom.
2. Put the device into bootloader mode.
3. Delete all nbf files other than radio_.nbf and run the upgrade utility.
4. Delete radio_.nbf and copy ms_.nbf from the original directory.
5. Run the upgrade utility again.
6. Delete ms_.nbf and copy nk_.nbf from the original directory.Repeat
7. Run the upgrade utility again.
8. Once all complete hard rest device.
Each time do not touch the xda just leave it in the cradle, swap the nbf file for the next and then run the upgrade program again. If you get a PC reset then start that one upgrade again (with device in bootloader mode).
Anyone who knows their stuff please feel free to ammend or correct the above strategy.

anyone know how long this upgrade should take?
The upgrades normally take me 30 minutes or so. 45 to get all my software back on it.
To stop these update errors due to power dips, plug the cradle into the the mains using the power adaptor and this will stop the device drawing any significant power from the usb connection from your computer. This power dip is more likely caused by a "dirty" power supply, which in the UK for certain is unavoidable without the use of UPS devices. The power adapter for the phone will damp out any minor fluctuations and leave the usb socket to do just data transfer. This transfer puts little strain on the usb socket and isn't as prone to power fluctuations then.
By doing this you should be able to update in a one-er. Also try using a laptop rather than a desktop as they are by design less prone to power fluctuations too.
upgraded fine nice one
Hi Pug
This link you provided doesnt work, can you provide an updated one?
Cheers
Jonno

Try that link instead.
Good luck.
I keep trying the link but keep getting asked for a username and password. Any ideas

cheers thats great
I wonder will the universal rom work on the qtek 2020i?
I dont know if this has been asked yet
It wont work ... ROMs for each device are pretty much device specific, they need the right drivers etc embedded so it works.
So even though the XDA II looks exactly like the XDA IIi they are completely different, which also means the Universal is completely different too.
Hello
I think I have a compete dead HTC Touch ELF here. Someone I know tried to flash it but he bricked it, so I decided to try some things out. He already bought a new cellphone so if I can revive this device I can use it.
Now the problem is it doesn't respond to anything. When I try to reset (Camera button + reset button) nothing happens at all.
When I connect it to the PC (using USB) and I reset it find a device called "PocketPC USB Sync" (Windows 7), but still no screen
So I tried various things from the stickies but nothings seems to make the screen function again.
Could anyone help me further?
Thanks!
I have now discovered something. If I connect to USB with no battery, do a hard reset and insert the battery, an orange led turns on.
with any luckthis is what i am looking at making a guide to fix. I have one in the same state.
Theres not alot that may help, but it may be worth looking at the recover your elf thread. Should be in the rom section. May be something there to try. You may find this thread gets closed as you're not meant to post a thread per each phone though.

Thanks for your reply. Yes I've already tried different things out those stickies, except that Goldcard since I'm currently unable to do the first step.
I'm sorry for opening a thread than, I'm new here and my only intention is trying to get this cellphone back to work!
Edit: I think the screen/screen controller is broken. I managed to install an original ROM from the HTC website. Now sometimes it does those Windows Mobile Alert sounds.

open it up and check that the ribbon to the lcd is attached/ damaged, i think the lcds go for about £15-20 at the moment. They're real easy to change, just be careful on the latch at the back.
Could the no screen be the result of something going wrong when flashed?

i'm not an expert when it comes to that, but i'd guess its highly unlikely. It could be worth checking ribbon etc first, rule that part of hardware? Do you have a second elf? Could try that lcd with it if you do and don't mind opening them.
I removed the screen and placed it again (checking the ribbon). Still not working.
I do not have another ELF to test the screen.
When I try flashing again it seems its unable to get the old version number ("Ancienne version" in the picture). Is this normal?

As you can pull the device info and flash stuff, it doesn't sound like it is dead... Have you tried running MyMobiler to see if that can connect to your device so that you can see what would be on it - Will help decide if it is dead. It will prompt to install on your device though, so you will need to guess and press the left softkey after running the exe on your pc.
If you have flashed a new firmware onto it though, you would probably need to realign - May be able to your msp_remotealignment for that - Not sure.
When I try the Remote Screen Alignment and I press "Skip" it gives this error message:
"An error occurred while trying to configure the remote device. Please reinstall Remote Screen Alignment"
MyMobiler doesn't want to connect, but it also says "Running on your mobile" and sometimes it pops out "Connected", but still doesn't work.
Hey CTWA, did you manage to fix your problem? Did you get a new lcd screen?

No I didn't had the time to go look for a new screen yet. I'm not sure if I will either.
Hmm, does that mean you no longer are using/wanting your device? (I'm still after one to test JTAG on!) If you want to sell, let me know.
Sorry to change the subject slightly, but I otherwise hope you do manage to
Since the device still isn't technically mine, I cant just sell it. I'll ask my mate about it!
