Google Maps to Device
Check out Orux Maps. It will allow you to select and download a google map to your phone for use with GPS when no cell signal is available. I've used it hiking with a google terrain mapo and it works great!

is the compass in google maps wrong in portrait for anyone else? its correct in landscape. its just off my 180 degrees when i rotate the phone.

[Q] Google Maps and Navigation

Hi guys I have a question, does the google maps on your Streak have built in launcher to google navigation or is navigation a stand alone app?
For example if you search an address in google maps does it give you the option for both directions and navigation? or just directions?
Because I bought a Streak used, and the latter seems to be the case for me.
Thanks.

I do not have my streak on me at present but i am sure its the latter
stand alone app in launcher bud
Oh, I see, geez that sucks. Oh well, I hope 2.2 update brings lots of needed changes. I love the 5 inch screen, but really thats not enough.
It should be able to do both. When in google maps, hit menu, directions, choose a place hit go and screen will show up with directions and also "show on map" or "navigate"options to click on.
or you can use just the navigation app.
Google maps does have an icon which when you click will take you to a screen where you get options for navigation like voice, past trips etc. you can also place regular trips as icons on desktop

Agreed, navigation is an option on current google maps.
I have the navigation icon also.. remember that google maps will not update itself unless you visit market and install the latest version from there first..

The navigation button is enabled in google maps labs. It becomes an option on your icon along with call the icon.
Great if you are searching for a place you can just click navigate to get to it.
Also when directions are invoked in google maps it gives you the option, to use the normal map directions or navigation
The google labs options are good. It has layers button, measure tool etc

Thanks for the update. I pulled the battery and now it seems to work fine. Maybe i was installing and uninstall too many apps from the market?? Not sure but in any case its working now.

[Q] Which GPS app are u using?

As the tittle says which gps app are u using for ur hd2 running android? I've searched around but i couldn't decide which one will be ok for an hd2.
Also, google maps is 100% offline on android right? Is it any good to use?
I live in Greece so i need an app that has maps there.
thx in advance
I'm using Sygic Aura and it's just awesome. Much like TomTom for WM. You can get trial version from Market.
I am using CoPilot but not sure if it's available for Greece currently. It costs me $5 and you can download all the maps you need via WIFI (due to size) for free.
Google navi is ok but drains battery faster than CoPilot for instance.
Also, Google can work off data only if you cashed maps out already and they are stored in your phone.
thx for your replies guys
i just downloaded sygic aura from the market and the greek maps but i cant seem to find any satellites. Do i have to do something else before using the app (apart from turning the GPS on, duh ), something like QuickGPS in Winmo? How long does it take to find a satellite?
I'm using Sygic Aura with cotullas Rom no issues, i guess you might have a problem due to the gingerbread gps drop issue....
I'm using Navigon. Didn't like Sygic Aura too much...
Just my 2c...
I'm in Australia and was using CoPilot whch wasn't too bad but a bit laggy and took ages to get a satellite signal.
Swapped to a RAM build and as a matter of course thought i'd try out iGO 8.4 which seems to be much smoother, quicker to load and quicker to acquire a signal than CoPilot.
As a matter of interest I was using Navigon on my last phone (iPhone 3G) and it was the best of the lot but probably becuase it used Sensis maps (i think, or was that another GPS???). Either way, I remember Navigon being good and Sensis maps being good too.
They all seem to have free trial periods so why not give them all a go and see which works best for you? Or you can always go the APKTOR route ;-)
I use google maps and google navogation.
Used it driving from katy, tx to hollywood, fl about 20hrs drive. No issues whatsoever.

[Q] Offline GPS Navigation App

Anyone know if such a program exists and specifically for car navigation (unlike the offroad one currently on the market)? Kinda like Microsoft Streets & Trips but for Android. I am hoping to use my Xoom as a offline GPS since it is Wifi only model.
There are several. The cheapest is CoPilot. I have it as a backup for when I don't have data. The US only version is normally $4.99 (but I got it on sale for $2.99). I find it OK, but I prefer Google Maps Navigation.
Another is Navigon (it's quite a bit more expensive). A market seach should turn up some more.
Don't forget that Google Maps Navigation will cache the map and route for you . So you can start Navigating while you are in a WiFi hotspot and it will cache all of the maps to finish your navigation. Of course, if you get too far off route then you will have a problem.

Yeah that's kinda what I'm worried about. I need this to be a 100% offline app with full stored maps. Also obviously to be compatible with the Xoom.
which phone do you have, you could enable your wifi hotspot using your 3G network. (I do it on my desire Z/G2)

I have a Blackberry and has no option for Wifi or Bluetooth tethering. I can only do Dial-Up Networking but android doesn't support it as a client.
Have you tried Aura Sygic? if it works on XOOM and Honeycomb?
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.sygic.aura&feature=search_result
And you can find it for free on a site for Pirates.

I used Sygic back when I had a WinMo. Was a good app. I'll check this out.
Found several apps:
Aura GPS Navigation
MobileNavigator USA
Locus Free
CoPilot Live USA
NavDroyd
Anyone try any of these and know which works with the Xoom?

[Q] No location after installing brut maps

Hello,
I've rooted my Wildfire and as I'm not in US, I've uninstalled the original Maps app and replaced it with the hacked version of Maps 5.7 that has unlocked navigation (also so that I don't have 2 Maps apps on my phone). However, now all apps (including maps) cannot find the location using the network location mechanism, only if I turn on GPS, then the location can be found (I also need to be outside for the GPS to work, but that is normal). Using the location via the mobile network doesn't work at all. Is there a fix for this, or do I somehow need to reinstall the original maps? I use the stock HTC froyo ROM.
Thanks a lot.
Cheers...
I also use the hacked maps, but network based locations works well. Anyway i downgraded to a lower maps version because the fonts in newer versions are not very clear on my wildfire.

[Q] Gps Programs for 1280x800 resoution

I live in a dark age country were no real data contracts exit. So i need an offline gps application, like say Igo Myway.
Has anyone used a gps app like that on the note ? How are they scaling ?
I will be using google maps for now, but i have a total of 300mb for all my data needs. ( the dark ages really)
I would also appreciate any advice you could give me about navigation applications.
Is google maps a data drainer? Is there a way to download the entire city map?
Thanks.
Can you just load the google maps on your home or business internet before you leave? According to the google navigation for mobile site it caches the routes.
I can't post a full link...
google.c o m /mobile/navigation/
sygic or copilot
sygic is better and works flawless
http://www.sygic.com/en/android
Interesting, but I suggest to the administrator moving this thread to "apps"

You can pre-download, over wifi, sections (10 x10 mile square) of google maps by turning on the 'google labs' option. However, they expire in 30 days and you must redownload them again.
Google maps, like any continuous data flow, will suck down data pretty fiercely if you are doing a long drive.
I'd definitely consider getting a standalone nav program if you can't rely on your data plan.
- Frank
I preloaded a route before i went on driving. It worked really well. It used about 2 mb for a drive of 34 miles.
Thank you for that
But i will diffidently need a dedicated off-line app.
sygic or ndrive are the best.
google maps is poor at best, quite often out of date and the navigation only works in a handfull of places.

I'm living in a wood age village too. Try using "Mapdroyd". Works just great.
Someone advised Locus. It looks good.

sygic looks wonderful on the note. Beats many dedicated gps devices.
Oops, sorry. I don't have my Note till tomorrow. This was used on an Orange San Francisco (ZTE Blade)....
Navmii is a free app I downloaded and tried for the first time yesterday. I don't know what map regions are available but they have UK and Ireland, which suits me perfectly. The UK maps are a 300MB+ download for offline use. There is no need for a data connection to run the app once it is installed (via WiFi of course. ).
Details/discussion and download links here - http://getsatisfaction.com/navmii/topics/android_release
I also have CoPilot Live Premium, for which I paid, and have in the past used TomTom. On yesterday's 100 mile journey Navmii gave a route identical in distance and forecast ETA as TomTom. It worked flawlessly on that journey.
