Howdy, I tried to film the aftermath of the bizarre weather we've been having here in Scotland yesterday, but I noticed that when I played it back, even converted it to an HD Avi and ran it through VirtualDub that at certain points the video lags and freezes, the sounds remains the same but the picture will pause for a second. I'm assuming (based on some research on Google and here) that it's because the memory card I'm using was the basic Class 2 that was shipped with the phone. Assuming I buy a Class 6 or that, the card will be fast enough to write HD video to it? I'm just wondering if any of you have had these problems, and/or does a higher class SD card fix it? (before I buy one!). Or, is it for a separate reason on the Desire Z that the video is jerky? Thanks! Below is my video should you want to see an example!

Yes the class can have a massive impact on HD recording on this phone (and others), get a class 6 and you should soon see the differences.

Thank you, I shall, I just wanted to make sure! On a side note, if I change my memory card does Android get confused because of how it "deals" with the SD Card? (I'm coming from five years of Windows Mobile & I know they had no issues with SD Cards being swapped) but I noticed Android "Prepares The SD Card" whenever you unmount it or that.. Is it a straight forward swap and everything's working or is it a hassle of reinstalling certain things? Thanks!

Perfect thanks! I'm away to buy one, I assume that a higher class will improve the frame rate too! Thanks for your help!
Mine even stops recording after 13 seconds or so. Also have an older 16GB Class 2 card. I'm also getting a good Class 6 one.
Regarding files on the sdcard: Just copy everything from your old card to the new one. If you are using linux, be sure to also copy the hidden directories

Thank you, shall do! I'm just waiting on it now!
I have a 16Gb Class 6 card and have noticed the same thing with my HD video recordings being choppy.
I attributed it to other things going on such as data downloading or the system splitting resources to keep other balls in the air at the same time.
I can live with it, but would like it to be better as well.
I don't think the Class 6 card will make a difference for you, but it can't hurt either.
As to switching microSD cards, there's no issue with that. I don't know what happens behind the scenes when it's 'preparing the SD card' but the only issue I had was on the G1 when I was using apps2sd and have all of my apps on the ext3 partition.
I use a couple of different microSD cards regularly, no issues with swapping.
Good luck!

I'm using a 8GB Class4 card, same situation.
I tried to disable Live Wallpaper, put the phone in Flight Mode, close all user background program, overclocked to 1.4GHz. still lags.
If you change to the resolution just below the HD level then the videos record smoothly even on my 8gb class 2 card.
Does formatting the SD card with a different allocation unit size increase performance? Can anybody with a spare mini SD card test this -- the higher the size the better the performance (but more space gets eaten up by small files). The general idea with this is if the aus is small it conserves file space but you get slower read/writes -- if the aus is higher you get faster read/write but files take up more space.
I wonder if there is a good alternative video recording app that would handle the recording better...?

Yeah, the 480 works fine on my standard SD too!

For info i had bought a Kingmax class10 8gb, to swap with the supplied one but
after a 10 hours use of my desireZ, i had a message "sd card is read only"(corrupted files on it, in fact), at that time i used only googlenavigation/Layar/whatsApp as software "using Sdcard" and took 2 or 3 pictures with the camera for testing.
perhaps it's a single defective unit, but for feedback and history purposes, i post that
I just got an "advertised " centon class 6 card. It seems a little quicker. I can't tell. Anyone can shed some light on this?
Maybe because the card is empty and doesn't have thousands of files on it, like my previous one does, might have something to do with something.
using a faster card will impact the performance slightly. Any time the phone has to go to the SD card to read something (opening apps, pics, videos, etc.), the faster it can read it, the faster it performs.
Is it necessarily noticeable? Probably not.
not a placebo at all, If you had let's say a Class 2 or class 4 sd card and you get a class 6 you can tell the difference.
I changed the stock card for a class 6 and I can tell the diffence as when you view pictures or play music.
For recording and watching video and copying data would benefit from a faster card. With video, you can get studdering if the card can't send and receive data fast enough to keep up with higher bitrates. If you have a card that reads two meg a second and a video that plays at almost four, the card would probably be the bottleneck.
On my old phone (moto backflip). Using aps2sd and swap on the sd card I noticed a difference. I went from the stock card to an 8gb class 6 and then to a 16gb class 10 and noticed a difference each time.

Glad to hear this as I just ordered a 16GB class 10 Patriot card from amazon, was only 35.99 Beats the hell out of my current 4GB class 4
The class of a card is based on write speeds. It could still have bad access speeds which wouldn't do anything to help performance. Random access speed is the spec you care about for stuff other than taking pictures or video. I would look up tests people have done on the card before buying and get one with fast random access speed. There is no easy way to know other than benchmarks people have done. For example I have a 2gb class 2 card that works with a few emulated games(castlevania por in particular) that even a class 6 gives problems. Also it only matters when you are accessing your SD card of course.
I haven't noticed any increase in performance with a faster sd card. The only thing I noticed is a lot better is HD video recording. It can now record HD video without stuttering like before.
When i try to UL large files to my desire HD I get very slow UL speeds around 2 MB sec max, sometimes it even gets stuck for a minute or so. I tried different USB ports etc.
What are your UL speed on average for larger files? How can I speed up my UL Speed?
Open to any suggestions
Thanks
you are using the wrong cable (UBS)
depending on the SD card class you have in your phone will determine the read and write speeds. I believe you recieve a Class 2 or 4 with the phone.
It depends on your SD card. A Class 2 card will have a max write speed of around 2 MB/s.

LOL.
What SD card are you using? I'm still using the one that the device came with and it's copying at around 6MB/s.
Also If you copying a big as amount of small files the speed will decrease
I get 14MB/sec sustained transfer rate from PC to DHD on Kingmax 8GB Class 10 card.
On the original Class 2 card I get around 4MB/sec.
I've got a 16gb class 4 Dane-elec card and the write speed sometimes goes down to 850kb/s and never goes past 2mb/s
I tried the card in a different phone and also with the adapter to make it an sd card with the same results so i assumed the card was faulty. Getting it sent back for a refund, while copying my data back on to the standard 8gb card that comes with the phone the write speed is at 576kb/s.
Not really sure what to do now, have already reformated the 16gb dane-elec and that didn't help. My next card will be a SanDisk as i've heard good things from them.
Any help would be appreciated.

Might be a fake card. Class 4 should have a minimal write speed of 4 MB/s (actualy it should be even higher). SanDisk is an excellent choice if you have the money.
I got a 32Gb MicroSDHC class-10 memorette card.
I verified the speed with a card reader + h2testw that write speed is : 14.7MByte/sec
read speed: 17.5MByte/sec
But when I used the class10 card in tmobile HD2, I am shocked.
When I copy a 720MB movie the write speed is about 4MByte/sec.
h2testw program when used on hd2 connected to PC, showed write speed as 4.8 MByte/sec only.
It needs to be noted the same card when tested with h2testw and a card reader gave 14MByte/sec but gives less than 4.5MB/sec on HD2.
How to fix this problem of HD2 microsd card speed!
Looks like HD2 usb controller has some problem.
the card is indeed class-10.
Please let me know a solution to this problem on HD2.

The HD2 doesn't read or write to sd cards at that high of speed... that's why it's pointless using class 6 or 10 cards in a HD2. I think most phones are like that. Class 6 and 10 cards are mainly used for digital cameras, where having high sequential write speeds matters.

I have earlier used a nokia 5800 xpressmusic phone with a class 6 16GB card.
The data transfer speeds were higher than HD2.
Generalizing from a single instance (HD2 scenario) may not be correct.
I'm going to go with that the HD2 does not transfer faster than 5.3 MB/sec between the PC and the phone regardless of what the internal transfer rate between the phone and card is.
Using a class 6 card myself, i have noticed that the phone is much more responsive than it was with the class 2 card in there and movies play without stuttering from the class 6 card and applications launch quicker.
my nokia n81 8gb did 8MB/sec from internal 8GB and so did my KM900. The KM900 did 6.2MB from the same classs 6 card
I was under the impression the HD2 maxed at 16 gig. Maybe that's the problem?
Like zarathustrax said, the HD2 isn't capable of read/write any higher than a class 4 card. I think somewhere on the EVO forum there's a fix to unlock the read/write capability for a higher speed but I dunno if anyone here has tried the fix, or if it even works for the HD2 at all.

This is not true. I've copied large files at over 10MB/s directly to the phone. I can't vouch for every hd2 though as it's quite possible they have different hardware. Also the speed drops dramatically if you're copying many smaller files.
I am thinking to buy memorette 32 gb microsd class 10 for my HD2.
As far as I have understood:
1) No matther what I cannot use it fully Class 10 speed when connected to HD2
2) When I connect it to my PC with card reader I can fully use class 10 speed.
I have sandial 8 gb class 2. When I connect it to my pc with card reader and transfering large amount of data (150+ MB), it cease to operate. I have to reconnect it. Then I shuld transfer in less amount of data or reduce copy speed (such as UltraCopy) . I think that is a safety issue for preventing disk from get burned. My question is, will I possibly have some issues with memorette or some other class 10 cards?
Also would it not better using class 10 card in HD2 for using on SD installed Operating System instead of class 6 or 4?
I would appriciate if someone return about memorette. I have never heard about that trademark. I am planning to bid on ebay today.

A good quality class 2 or 4 sd card is usually better for running an operating system off of, as lower class cards tend to have faster random access speed and better random read/write speeds. Class 6 and 10 sd cards are designed to have a higher sequential write speed, but to achieve these higher speeds, the card initializes the part of the card that's about to be used. The initialization takes some extra time to get started, but boosts the sequential write/read speed so it's great for digital cameras or writing files sequentially.
But when it comes to using the card to run an OS off of, like android or wp7, or using the card to run apps off of, you are going to be reading and writing many small bits of data from different parts of the card. When it comes to this, you need a card that has a good random access speed and random read/write speeds. A high class card that is tweaked to have high sequential read/write speeds ends up being slower because it keeps initializing each part of the card before accessing it, while the lower class 2 or 4 card that doesn't do the initialization is a lot quicker accessing many small parts of the card because it doesn't have that extra step... but they don't get the speed boosts with sequential read/write.
Many people just assume that a higher class card is always going to be better, but this isn't true at all. It all depends on what you are using the card for. Higher class 6 or 10 cards are perfect for digital cameras, recording video, or transferring large files, etc... if you are going to be doing sequential reading or writing, higher class is better.
But for running apps off of, or running an OS off of, or using it as internal memory for an OS like wp7, or anything that will be accessing many parts of the card quickly or reading many small bits of data, etc., you want a card with a good random access speed and random read/write speeds, and that is something that is not rated on cards... but generally lower class cards are better than higher class cards... especially if you get a good quality brand, like sandisk. Sandisk class 2 and 4 are very good cards for random access speeds.
I hope some of you find this info useful and stop assuming a higher class card means better for all situations.

I am using memorette class 10 32GB microsd currently.
Its affordable and is fully working. I have tested to full capacity read/write using h2testw as I wrote in an earlier post.
Just check the seller's feedback and the description though.
I use TEAM micro sd class 10 on my hero, but after a month my sd card write speed is only 2MB/s.
At the first time,it reach 11MB/s when i tested it with h2testw and sd speed test on my handset.
I only use 640MB for app2sd (ext2) without swap cache.
Could someone explain to me what was happen to my sd card?
Sorry for my bad English
I have a PNY U3 Turbo Performance 64GB High Speed MicroSDXC Class 10 UHS-I, up to 90MB/sec Flash Card. It seems to get slower with time. I mean it is literally taking me like 60 seconds to delete a few pictures. The card is formatted to portable storage. I only store music and photos on it. Reformatting offered no improvement. It is borderline unusable.
So, I benchmarked and found that my read speed is about 59 mb per sec and my write speed is 4.4 mb per sec. I can live with the read speed but the write speed is horrible. What gives?
How many pictures are you talking about, and how large are they?
128KB clusters?
I found trying to use 4K clusters in exfat was resulting in the same slowness. Reformatted to 128KB clusters and it flys (~20MB/s write ~70MB/read). Sandisk ultra plus 64GB.
I have this issue as well I have one of the fast Samsung cards. First few months worked great super fast but now takes a while to carry over a gig of pics and music. I also notice lag in loading and delteing photos through the phone
These are normal pics 5-6 MB. There has to be something wrong.

If you find any info/solution let us know.
Im thinking about running it through one of the tests that show the read/write speed, if its not up to par on that I will contact samsung see if its covered under their warranty.
Why not opt for a 128GB sd card? My Moto X Pure will be here Thursday. I have a 64GB in my old phone but I may get 128.
Has the OP tried backing up their data and reformatting the card?

Yes, I have tried this a few times and it did not help. The write speed of this particular card is somewhere between 5 and 9 mb/sec. I have used multiple benchmarking tools that all confirm the same thing. The sad thing, if you drill down into the specifications for a lot of these new sd cards there is no mention of write- speeds. I asked a question similar to my OP on Reddit and had somebody with the same card echo my issue. Terrible write speeds. I am not in the mood to buy another card with great specs only to find it performs poorly in my phone? There is still a part of me that thinks it's hardware or software related and specific to the phone. I can't quite believe that something advertised as "turbo", UHS-1, Class 10, and 90 mb/sec has an actual write speed of 5 mb/sec. It seems criminal.
^^See my post #3. I've found this card to have very good write speeds on the phone of ~14-16 MB/s, reads around 40-50. On the pc through a usb 3 card reader I can write at the speeds posted above.
But yes, unless you drill down, the marketing and advertising doesn't list write speeds. I can see why. It all depends where you'll be using it. I'll be lucky to see sustained 10MB/s read through my dash cam (not sure what the write speed even is) even through the card is capable of 40MB/s +.
I should say, using the moto x, through MTP, I've seen read speeds upwards of 35-40MB/s, write speeds of about 7-10MB. The card is faster through twrp, backup stats indicate ~14-16MB/s.
