Yay, updated.

I'm going to see if it helps out with 4G signal on my way to class tonight. Here's hoping.
Hope this fixes 3g at my University, it was fast before now it's a piece of crap, and with full bars too. At home it's blazing.

Chances are, the towers at your school are loaded. I have the inverse effect. 4G rocks on campus, but has a 2-3 Mbps degragation in the city.

You might be right, but I don't understand how it could be fast(800-1100kBitps) from the moment I got my Evo until one day when it was just rediculously slow and hasn't been fast for even 1 second since. 80kBitps max

I couldn't answer that...my two cents:
1: Students don't use their phone at the beginning of the semester and are now starting to use the network during class.
2: Everyone and their pet mouse learned how to tether and is bogging down the system
In all seriousness though, I only get 80 kbps down on 4g sometimes. If you are testing near folliage or right next to a wall, that can increase attenuation in the signal and drop your rate.

Forgot about that, yes I was using 3g heavily during summer classes, less students attend these days.
Are other carriers this bad?
prl fixed my shoddy speedtest results.
getting ~1000-1200down, and 600-800up
i could barely break 500 down, and 500 up before
I was able to pick up 4G about 2miles further away from campus...which is odd because I didn't notice any new towers and I wouldn't think PRL would affect that.
Updated! Thanks

Hmm, this didn't help at all for me. Now I get 0 bars in my bedroom and office, where as I used to get at least 1 or 2.
just got it...no difference for me
That's the reason my cheese is faster now lol! Glad I checked here
Thanx man other wise I wouldnt have noticed hah

Lol, who needs Sprint's towers when you can just use Verizon's
Though the 250ms latency is lame, but the signal is niiice. I get a 1x signal at some of the places I go to, where on Verizon's PRl I get 4/4 bars. (-67 dBmw)
Every time I update the prl I never notice a difference in signal quality.....

Hey guys. Does anyone have experience with Sprint 4G right now? Speeds? Reliability? I love the EVO and want to know what 4G might be like using this device.
Don't expect much off the bat, to be honest. 2-10mbps, spotty service, etc. It's like 3G was when that was rolled out, it's going to take time to iron things out.
It probably depends on where you live. In Corpus Christi, I can great speeds, up to 20 mbs, in certain parts of town and less than 1 in others.
I have an Intel WiMAX card in my notebook and an Overdrive device. I always get considerably better speeds using my WiMAX card than I do the Overdrive. The WiMAX connects using Clear's service, but it is the same service that Sprint's Overdrive connects to.
Eddie
How is the latency? Is it good for gaming or better for just browsing?
I used Clears WiMax service at home for a couple weeks. The speeds were so so but latency was so horrible that I could not use it for voip or xbox live at all. The best part of it was at midnight or so every night (when I get home from work and need it the most) the service would go down for maintenance for 1-3 hours.
p.s. WiMax is not 4G

???
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/4G
Wimax as it stands now is not "4G" in the certification sense. Then again, neither is LTE. The 4G certification stands at 100mbps, Wimax2 and LTE Advanced will have the 4G certs. LTE and Wimax are technically called 3.9G, as the basis of the tech will lead into 4g.
That being said, Verizon and AT&T aren't going to say anything, because they're doing the same damn thing.

You sir have no idea what your talking about. WiMax is Sprint's forth generation technology, you should read a bit more about 802.11m.

I noticed that corpus was one of the cities to get 4g. I look forward to it as I am visting at the end of June.

i am in Ft Worth texas.. it has had 4G/wimax (whatever) as one of the test cities. I got the overdrive device 3 weeks ago.
I live in the suburbs and work near downtown.
at both locations I only get 20% signal strength. And the speed is about double what I get on 3G. well the 3G signal strength was also about 20-30% too!!!
sometimes, i can get 40% and see the speed hit 1.2-1.5mbs. but that is for a very short time, maybe a min or two. 95% of the time i am 20%.. and sometime i loose all signal!!! I have tried to download larger files 100mb or higher, but it fails because, before I can finish the download it will loose signal and I have to start over. So i have no faith in the stability of this tech, at this time. It is good for casual internet stuff, but for work, large files, time sensitive issues, I would not bet on it. They need more towers!!!!!!
4g is great u just have to be withone one mile of a 4g enabled tower in order to get real 4g service

It seems pretty good. My step son has his Xbox360 connected and plays Call of Duty all the time. He says there is no lag at all. He was getting lag when connected to our Road Runner account.
It does make a difference on where you are and where you place the modem. He puts the modem in the window.

I'm sorry, what's so funny with that statement? I find it hard to believe that the latency is lower with a 4g connection, but I donno... I guess I just don't get it.
I have noticed I get MUCH faster while USB tethered, and when I have everything killed on the phone. SO all it's doing is routing over WiMax and the lapotp/computer is doing most of the work makes sense though.. it's having to do less work so the CPU can focus on routing WiMax packets only.
Anyway, I was doing some updates over ubuntu's update manager tethered and I hit 12.7Mbps down!
XDA scales down the pictures so much I have a zoomed up pick too of the network metrics
Guess I should mention I am running BBv0.3 (Hope pete comes back soon and fixes v4 or even drops froyo v5 on us)
And I have used Titanium Backup to pull nearly all htc sense stuff off that ROM as well as removing anything I didn't want running in the background.

Actually those tests were run, and I am currently sitting on the basement level of a large concrete government-style building. Granted I have a tower about 2 blocks from where I work though, still I haven't seen all these "penetration" issues people complain about with WiMax. Houston has some strong signals though.
I've actually started noticing 4G is a LOT better after the update, but it has always been very good here in Boston, even though it's not even officially launched yet.I have read somewhere that new markets have newer equipment, and Sprint is literally adding WiMAX base stations to all sprint and nextel towers. It will only get better with time.

Well those numbers were from the JSC area, and I can get 4-6Mbps where I live in West U. The "signal" strength is kinda pointless IMO because it's more your connection to the tower than your bandwidth to the internet. I have noticed better bandwidths with 1-2 bars than with full 4 bars a lot of times
well i live in an area saturated in 4g well everywhere in town but where i live...sigh

I think some people have come to expect too much from WiMax. I have heard complaints about it not getting more than 3Mb/s yet they don't complain about the 900kb/s they get otherwise with 3G - its more than triple yet they want more.
I am happy to get sustained 3Mb/s speeds wirelessly anywhere. Hell 2Mb/s sustained is better than any Wifi at Starbucks or places that offer free Wifi. Most of them let you ride off their T1 line. Can we say 1.5Mb/s shared to everyone!
I am very happy to get the speeds that I do. It's SOOOOO much better now with the update. I am interested to see where I got the 5Mb/s before the update to see what it will give me now. It's a local starbucks that I frequent. I am curious.
Great speeds by the way!

As good as it is, 2.5-3 mbps is equivalent to AT&T 3G speeds, that's why people complain.
You can say their network sucks, but it's bigger than Sprint's 4G at the moment
No 4G for me here, and I would be happy with 3 mbps sustained, but I wouldn't call expecting more than that unreasonable for 4G. It should (and will, eventually) handily beat other existing 3G networks. Looks like it has already started according to the OPs results.

i live in allendale michigan during the school year and the past month or so my speeds have been just like this. my guess would be from an increase in network traffic from all the new evo's. ill do a test right now at 11 pm, will probably be much faster than i normally get nowadays. its damn ridiculous, before the evo i used to get 1.5 mbps download all the time.
IN BOTH TEST I HAVE 4-5 BARS. (i can see the cell towers out my back door)
test 1
download 357 kbps
upload 127 kbps
ping 477 ms
test 2
download 95 kbps
upload 169 kbps
ping 829
these are horrible, data is pretty much unusable at these speeds.
edit: btw i do live in a college town (grand valley state university) so there are a lot of cell phone users.
Suck it up! Data speeds at my apartment are TERRIBLE even though I've got fantastic service. I've got tons of these extremely slow data tests.
It's been a while since I was testing - I've given up. I just steal the neighbor's wifi for my phone now.
BTW, I'm like 45 mins west of you, hockey4life. I'm in Muskegon. It's only bad right near my apt. though :/ It's fine all the rest of the time around town here.
1.27mbit up HAH I'd love to see that. The only two which are moderately fast on my speedtest list are when I was trying out 4G in Grand Rapids!

Have any of you tried using real signal from the market? Just because the phone shows you signal bars, it doesn't necessarily mean that you have good signal for data. Real signal will show you your actual signal strength as it relates to both voice and data service.

no, but in my case the tower is right outside my house so it definitly should be high.
also, its not just in my house where its bad. it is everywhere in this area. the only time i get good good data speeds is far from area. i made a report and they said they would send a technician to look at the tower but doubt they actually will. if im stuck like this for the rest of this year im gonna flip.

Looks like quite the improvement to the speeds that I get at my house in Idaho.
But...I get 4G in most places that I'm at + I use android tether all the time, even at school sometimes. I try not to complain about Sprint's ****ty 3G too much, especially since the price is right.
Getting awful 3G speeds in Kalamazoo, MI as of late.. i'm lucky if its above 100KB down - upstream seems a little slow but closer to normal..
Hmm.. Whats the deal?
I think those 3g speeds are great compaired to my 150kb down and 110kb up in my house.
There's 4g about 15 ft away, but unusable 3g inside.
do any of you michiganders have any improvements? how about anyone else? im starting to wonder if things are gonna stay like this, i cant take these 2g (or 1g) speeds. there is essentially no reason for me to be paying data right now cause the only time i can use my phone pretty much is when im on wifi. if i was a new customer i definitely be using my 30 days right about now and switching carriers.
for the past few years ive been a sprint advocate with their good data coverage, good speeds, and good pricing but this is just horrible.
We all know their network sucks right now, including myself, but Sprint is working on this. They are rolling out what's called "Sprint Vision" (and forgive my lack of technical know-how) basically they are adding some "boxes" with multiple "cards" that can be inserted in them allowing for better/faster coverage in multiple directions that can easily be fixed if one goes down by simply replacing this "card" (something to this degree). The full "vision" has not been rolled out yet and is mainly the cause why the speeds suck right now.
Oh God.... This sounds like they're trying to whip up a janky version of a CMTS (Cable Modem Termination System).

I read the announcement on this... its actually pretty good. The towers will now only need one refrigerated smaller box to do 4g 3g and 1x(saves energy and space) they will use fiber cables to the top instead of copper for less signal lose. They will need less towers because this one can do all of it.

What's wrong with this setup? The cable co's use it, and in most instance it works well. The issues occur when there's over saturation - not enough blades to handle the load. Speeds go down, noise goes up, speeds go down more so... Perpetual cycle.
In fact, I recently had an issue with my cable provider where during prime time hours, speeds would drop 25-40% or more. At first look it would appear to be a capacity issue, but in my talks with the head of local operations, that wasn't the case. Plenty of capacity in this area to go around. Turned out during prime time, due to additional load, a failing card/blade (not the one I was connected to) was generating noise, which ultimately was causing my issues. They replaced the offending part, returning my speeds back to 20mbps at all times of the day.
Bottom line, who cares what method they use to increase speeds and bandwidth, so long as it works and is consistent.
Well it makes sense here..whatever it is...they might have it done in my area of Chicago....because a couple weeks ago 3g improved in a major way. Data downloads fast here now.

They do lease them. They still get to decide what goes on the towers.

Didn't Sprint sell off all their towers to TowerCo in 2008, and leases all of them?

They didn't even have any to sell here. IIRC nTelos owns all the towers Sprint uses in WV.
I can vouch that my 3G signal is much, much nicer, it was upgraded in my area about a week ago. (And no, I'm not using an Airave.)

I heard Verizon is leasing many Sprint towers - Although I could be wrong.

The only way I make a call that won't drop is by rooting my phone and using the roam control app. Wtf sprint? Why cant we get the strong signal on the sprint network that we get from roaming?

You realize that there is probably someone that has Verizon that does the same thing and is complaining about the same thing???
You aren't going to get perfect signal everywhere from any carrier.

Yeah, except Sprint was the last one in the spectrum pool, so they ended up with the 1900 mhz spectrum, which doesn't penetrate buildings and cars as well as the 800 mhz spectrum that the other folks are playing with. And don't get me started with the 2.5 gHz spectrum that WiMax is living on.
+1 on crap signal everywhere
+1 on the 1900 PCS band being garbage
+1 on 2.5 ghz being even worse
Higher the freq, higher the loss....
I carry an Epic, a Captivate and a 7" G-Tab. I keep my epic permanently roamed on Verizon for voice services, leave the tab on Sprint for unlimited data and the cappy is for work. Verizon by far has the best call quality and highest signal levels. Even when in a spot with full bars on all of them, big red calls sound the clearest.

Network Vision is Sprint's attempt to become the most dependable (if not best) network by 2013. They're converting EACH of their towers to multinode frequencies. So, each tower's radius will be increased along with the amount of capacity it can handle. Those areas where you have1 bar should increase dramatically (and it should all be done by 2013-2014).

I'm excited about it! Sprint is also introducing an enhanced 1x/3G technology (EvDo B) which is supposed to have speeds equal to or greater than WiMax (greater than 19mbps.)

I can appreciate what they're doing to fix this problem and I appreciate you giving this info. But like I said in a similar conversation yesterday, I can't wait until 2013 to make a reliable phone call. Patience is one thing, but waiting 2 years to make a phone call from my desk is a bit much. Once winter hits I won't want to go stand in freezing tempretures to save 20 bucks a month on my phone bill.
Edit: I know this pic is blurry, but it shows 1 bar of Sprint vs full bars of AT&T. If AT&T can make it in here, I deserve at least 2 or 3 bars from Sprint damnit!

The most I've ever hit was 11 mbps on Wimax. Maybe it's because I'm sharing the network, though.

Its because they're rate limiting it...
I was in a building today where the opposite is true. Zero service from Verizon and 4 bars from Sprint. It just seems funny to me when people make these complaints. If you don't get service where you spend a majority of your time, you picked the wrong provider. If AT&T was the only company that had good service where I live, i'd be paying a lot more for cell service. Fortunately for me, all the major providers are pretty equal in Portland, so I can go cheap lol

I dont get service in my house. I step RIGHT out the door, BOOM im drowning in spectrum. Come in, no service. Lol im sure my walls arent made of led since i get full service roaming on verizon.
I hope with network vision, they really up the building penetration of atleast 3g. I also get 1 bar of 4g with the random reconnect (which i dont blame it on...im lucky it catches the signal at all!) and 0-1 bars of Sprint (all g's) lol
when i head upstairs...i get all bars everything. just my part of the house is whack

thats the most ive hit too lol so that immediately screams "CAP!" to me lol.
but nah sprint was gonna have rev b a long time ago as well but decided against it. I think the max was only 6mbs or something. Source where its capable of 19mbs please? (just curious cuz rev b interested me since i found out about it the day i got my hero...)

I don't think that will be possible. The part of the 3G spectrum Sprint owns is not very good at penetrating buildings. The best you could hope for is that with a stronger signal strength they'll be able to compensate for that technical limitation, but it won't be as good as what other carriers offer in terms of building penetration.
