Mobile broadband in portugal - Galaxy S I9000 General

Hi folks,
I am off to Portugal for vacation and was wondering which mobile broadband provider you would recommend.
I would like to tether (and possibly use skype via that) but that is not required.
I found optimus and vodafone (that appears to have identical pricining to tmn)
I will only be in Lisbon so are there possibly any small-area providers that might be cheaper?
Which provider would you recommend me to get? (PS: This needs to be in combination with a prepaid SIM of course, since I won't stay long enough to make proper use of a long term contract.)
Thanks for you advice

To be honest, any one of the 3, they are very similar in terms of coverage and prices of internet.
In my case I use the prepaid optimus tag which gives you unlimited calls and sms/mms between the people with tag for 10€, and these 10€ can be used to spend in an internet plafond like 1.35€ per week that gives you 30 mb/week. And of course, the more you pay, more mb you get.

Hi Darkstrider,
You are right on the available providers. They are Optimus, Vodafone and TMN and they sell similar products.
I think your best bet will be on pre-paid broadband (for example kanguru from Optimus) but in this case you will not have a phone number associated to it, just net.
I know that Optimus and Vodafone have a product where you pay €10 and you have 10 days of net (at 1Mbit) without traffic limits.

Is there any way to get free wifi, or cheaper wifi?

Hi, i am a newbee. But i have my usa Mda working great with a Molski 2.26 Rom at 273, he is the man. So now i am looking for the best service for an unlocked phone. I am looking to use it for slingmobile, and skype. Right now i am using a prepaid cingular chip. I believe some talked about free internet with a t-mobile prepaid chip. So i am trying to see what you would recommend. Even if i had to subscribe to a cheap paid phone service to get a cheap package deal. Unlimited internet and phone combo, for a low price or free. Come on hacks, help. Please.
Eh? Wifi? Just use a free wifi locator (google for it) and try to find an open net.
If you can't, then you're talking about using cheaper data?
Where are you based, ie country, network, what kinda data usage etc.
Best bet is finding open networks though...
V
Location: Long island, New york. As far as how much data, Unlimited for either skype, or Slingmobile.

[Q] Just moved to the US... and already lost !

Hi everybody...
Ok, so here's my (short) story:
I've just moved from France to the US (Minneapolis), and I brought with me my HTC HD2 (Leo) from France... and yes, it's unlocked
My provider was Orange France, and I used to pay 29€ (approx $32) for my plan, that includes 60min and unlimited data (I really don't use text messaging a lot), and that was perfect for me.
Since I just moved to the USA, I'm a little bit lost looking for cell phones plans... I have a hard time to find a decent plan that won't cost me too much.
What I need is: approx 60min for calls (could be a little more) and data (unlim. or a least 200mb/mths). Text messages are optionnal. I'd like to pay something's around the same price I used to pay in France (let's say max $35 to $39)
(I might be wrong, but it seems that US plans are really expensive... so if you have any advice I'll be very happy to hear about it)
Thanks a lot for your help !
Go for prepaid its cheaper but not good data plans...but there is Simple mobile that has good plans
There is no such thing in America. France sounds like a magical place for smartphone users...

Agreed, the plans here are no where close to as cheap as $35. Most providers here will make you get unlimited data if you have a smart phone, to avoid overcharges, but I don't think you'll get what you want for $32, that's crazy cheap.

Simple Mobile runs on T-Mobile. Their "Unlimited Data" is capped @ 1GB and they will terminate your line if you go over. If you don't use that much data, then go for it: http://www.phonenews.com/simple-mob...b-accounts-terminated-when-cap-reached-11989/
Thanks guys ... I'll take a look at the differents plans.
... and yes, France was a magical place for smartphone users AND internet (my internet plan was 29.99€/month, that includes really fast broadband, free phone to all countries and cable TV)
29€ is more like ~$40
virgin mobile
$25 - 200min and unlimited data\mms\txt
or 40 for 1200min
the only downside about cdma prepaid plans is they usually dont have a great selection of phones and usually phones are expensive.
but you can learn to "flash" phones..

Virgin runs on Sprint. They wont take any CDMA phones that aren't branded as Virgin. They have the Blackberry Curve 8530 for 200 and they're getting the LG Optimus V (same as Optimus S from Sprint) for 150, which is without contract.
If you want the Android cousin to your Leo, go to Sprint and get the HTC Evo which is what I have. They're still pretty cheap. Or you can buy one from someone and flash it to Boost Mobile (which also runs on Sprint. I don't recommend MetroPCS because their data is slow, however they're cheap and they will flash the phone for you to their network in one of their stores.

I know how to flash phones..., mine is already flashed
And I'd like a plan whithout buying a new phone, my Leo is just 6mths old and I really like it
Well, I'm just back from downtown MPLS... asked about plans at a T-MO store, it seems they have a $29 plan for 500min calls, and a $10 plan for 200mb data, which may fit my requirements.

Visiting US for one month: which operator?

I'm going to visit the US in a few days for one month (holiday). I'm going to travel with Amtrak trains through the whole country.
The problem is that roaming in the US is extremely expensive. I would like to have internet access, but I don't want to pay 10 euro per MB. Therefore I'm looking for a US-carrier who offers an unlimited internet access (PAYG) for only 1 month.
I have a Verizon phone (HTC Touch Pro 2), but I don't know whether I can use it in the US (I've unlocked it to work on European networks).
What do you recommend me? Using a SIM-card or re-enabling my Verizon phone?
Thank you
- Edit: I would like to use it for my laptop as well, if possible
Virgin does for 25 $ a month I think and boost is 60$ verizon is 30 for "unlimited" data extra for talk time and texts. Tmobile is ok in densely populated areas ATT is the same

[Q] Traveling to Germany and Greece, need advice on SIM/Pay as you go or plan

Hi,
I will be traveling to Greece (Paros, Naxos, Santorini) and Berlin next month.
I already have a SIM unlocked Motorola Milestone. I want to purchase a European SIM.
1) Can I expect to use the same SIM card and plan when both in Germany and Greece? Or am I better off just getting 2 different ones?
2) What are good companies and plans? I don't really need voice... but I expect to use a lot of data for Internet access and hoepfully tethering. I found out about
WIND Paygo in a different thread, but no details on what to expect price-wise.
Anybody (either local to these countries or a fellow traveler) have any experience with this?
Thanks

You should get a separate SIM card for each of the countries... they are two different countries after all, and carriers will charge you higher roaming fees if you want to use their SIM card in a different country. The EU did regulate a maximum for roaming fees just recently, but you'll still be better off getting a new SIM card there.

For Germany, I'd go with a prepaid data flatrate plan, e.g. http://www.simyo.de/tarif/flat-internet.html (€15/mo up to 3GB @HSDPA/7.2 Mbit, after that GPRS), or e.g. http://www.klarmobil.de/tarife/datentarife/Internet_Flat_5000/index.html (€20/mo for up to 5GB HSDPA speed, after that GPRS). These are just two examples for pure data flats (since you said you didn't need voice).
I think you can get these types of discount carriers at gas stations and supermarkets. There are a lot to choose from; just make sure it's a prepaid data flat. The major carriers like T-Mobile, Vodafone, O2 (that have their own POS stores) are usually more expensive for prepaid as they focus more on 2y contracts.
No idea about Greece... maybe someone else can help you out there.
Hope this helps.

This REALLY helps, at least for my week in Berlin. Thank you very much.
For Greece, I would advise you to choose COSMOTE Internet On The Go Prepaid. You may find more information on their website:
http://cosmote.gr/cosmoportal/page/...p/section/Internet_E-mailwithLaptop/loc/en_US
You are better off buying two seperate SIM-cards (one for each country), as cheaper data-roaming options typically are only available with contracts.
In regards to tethering, this shouldn't pose a problem - european providers typically don't police a "one-device-policy", especially not with internet-on-the-go-type products.
An alternative to COSMOTE is Vodafone KartoInternet, but their prepaid plans are a bit more expensive and COSMOTE is said to have better coverage in general: http://www.vodafone.gr/portal/client/cms/viewCmsPage.action?pageId=8638&request_locale=en
Both sell SIM-only starter packs which include their sell-value (EUR 20) as prepaid-balance for internet use.

Thanks for the tip. I looked both web sites and they are what I am looking for. The prices seem similar enough for my purposes...MUCH better than roaming
I do have a follow-up question:
Both companies have DAY PACKS for 1Euro per day that includes something like "unlimited data" but is throttled after a specific amount of data is consumed. Does anybody know the specific of the the Thottling? I don't mind a bit of a slowdown...but how crippling are we talking about? Are they booting me down to 2G speeds?
I couldn't find any details on either web site about the specifics.
Just an update after my trip. Germany was a problem as a lot of the prepaid carriers don't have English customer service. I bought 2 different SIM cards and could not get them activated. I didn't have much time to mess around, but I was really disappointed.
Greece was good. As suggested in this thread, I went to a Cosmote store and got great service. I got a data only sim and an additional regular sim. They activated them for me with my passport. My only problem is that the data only sim ran out of cash and it is not possible to refill them from most outlets....I used the cash on the other sim, but the price per GB is not the same.
The moral of the storey for me: go to a carrier store directly and get as much as you need right away. Being in remote locations can make it hard to refill prepaid cards.

Prepay Flexi Cap ($30 AUD)
500 mb data
$150 worth of credit to spend on ANYTHING (txt, calls (national and international)
$350 worth of voice calls to another Australian Vodafone phone.
Best deal I could find.
help
also I'm new
I need more help please?
can any body give more details & experiences
I usually use 1GB per month Internet traffic
Well it depends what youre looking for!
are you looking for pre-paid or post paid? and also depends on your needs and your budget. For the best service, Telstra is where to go, but is the most expensive which is not what youre looking! I'm on Optus and must say that for me, i find it the best plan, for price and coverage. amaysim is probably one of the cheapest you'll find, but im not too sure about the coverage on that. Red bull mobile also offers a 'pre paid' plan, which gives you virtually unlimited everything for $365 which last for a year. So a dollar a day. Red bull uses Vodafones network, but there is alot of complaints with coverage in Australia with Vodafone. I know for myself i had to change after bad service.
As I said, it depends on what youre looking for as there are alot of options.
