I've changed my Android Rom from mattc/froyo 1.7 to 1.8 and can't find the blk keyboard that was on 1.7. (with the Mic symbol) .
I was just wondering if anyone knows of a decent keyboard or knows how to get the other keyboard up ?

ive been using mdeejay's HD build 3.0.5 now for awhile, several days and no issues.
aside from no camera, everything else seems to work.
wifi, GPS, sound (no skipping) no lag, calls are great, speakerphone is clear and loud. in call volume is really loud.
everything except the camera is working for me.

First enable it in settings (maybe it's already enabled by default, dunno), then press the symbols key a couple'o times.
I use Ultra Keyboard and as far as customisation, it cant be beat. Every aspect can be changed, key color, size, layout. It has gestures, swype style tracing, arrow keys and a toolbar that can be hidden/shown via gestures (toolbar has things like clipboard, zoom, quicklink to ultra kb settings, etc), camera option for texting while walking, and you can save/restore your keyboard settings so you dont have to set up your keyboard with each build on your sd card. It is a paid app in market, but imho its well worth the dollar or dollar fifty whatever it is. Give it a try and theres no way you wont be impressed, its the cadillac of android keyboards
I would say Swype, hands down.
Many keyboards have similar style of functionality, but none of them come close in quality and accuracy.
Yeah swype. Voice input swype is the best. Also their different skins for them too.

You're not wrong, the dev really put some work into this one. just tried it out, Buying now!
DROID X!!!!!!
Droid x keyboard is the best on android till today, plus its multitouch. I have used htc keyboard, swype, smart keyboard, black android keyboard and many others and NONE touch the droid x keyboard, give it a shot.
lol...okay just bought ultra keyboard and man its good....DOHHH!!!
second edit: WOW!!! ultra keyboard is it dude, i had tried all except from it, thanks guys. only problem is multitouch acts a lil weird.
Bought Ultra Keyboard on the back of this thread. I've become a bit disillusioned of Swype putting 'urea' when I swyped 'yea' and other such nonsense.
I'll try it out!

I really hope this is possbile. The HTC IME keyboard is absolutely indispensible to me. It in my experience has by far the best spell correction out of any keyboard I've tried. No other keyboard can I mess a word up so bad, add in a few extra letters than the word has, and it will still figure out what I'm trying to say.

The only thing I hate about the keyboard is that after putting a period to write down my email, it always puts a space after it. Errr....
If the HTC keyboard can be ported to the Galaxy S and Nexus One phones, then I'm sure it can for the Nexus S.
It'll be ported, no worries. In the mean time try Smart Keyboard Pro with HTC Skin.. very very similar. I actually prefer that to HTC_IME, but both are damn similar.
I had switched a while back to HTC_ime as well. I recently got tired of it's myriad bugs and switched back to stock and am loving it! Can't wait to see how much better the Gingerbread version will be.

i just switched to smart keyboard pro from the HTC IME and i will never go back. it's amazing, and the dev is very nice as well
Smart keyboard is great, and I would use it over stock keyboard for sure...
But I re-iterate, in my personal experience, no keyboard comes close to the spell correction offered by the HTC IME. It is VERY forgiving to typing mistakes. I mean you can completely misspell every letter of a word, add way too many letters, and it will still pick up what you're saying.
Then you gotta learn to make less mistakes!

Check the options you can turn off auto spacing after entering a period.
I personally use Smart Keyboard. I would like to use the new Gingerbread keyboard because of the multi-touch, but don't like that the keyboard TICK sound is not adjustable and it's very loud if I have my ringer/notification volume at full.
Smart Keyboard doesn't offer multi-touch, neither does HTC IME.
I will switch to Ultra Keyboard when I get the Nexus S because it is multi-touch.
Huh? AFAIK both Smart Keyboard and HTC IME have multitouch. Smart Keyboard even has an option for Multitouch AFAIK.
I'd try this kitchen, should work and you can customize it completely, check it out Great way to have nice, working HTC IMEs

smart keyboard has full multitouch, you have to enable it in the settings, though i think it's on by default.
Also depending on your phone it may not work too good, i've noticed on my nexus one the multitouch on smart keyboard has never worked good, but it works alright in apps like maps and the gallery.

I'm struggling to type accurately with both the stock keyboard and the Swype beta. Somehow the iPhone keyboard seems to be much more accurate for my typing style - possibly because the keys are smaller and have larger spaces between them?
Is there an iPhone-style keyboard available for the Desire Z?
You can do a Google search and find some things like what you're looking for, or you can just go to the Market theres an app called iPhone keyboard emulator
If you haven't used Swype for very long, try to give it a chance for a while. It takes some getting used to. But once you do, its far faster than hunt-and-peck typing. I can't stand the iPhone keyboard, very inaccurate, and results in many many typos for me. My wife has an iPhone, and she prefers my Swype keyboard.
Have you tried recalibrating the keyboard? This might help. Go to Settings>Language & keyboard>Touch input>Text input>Calibration tool.
Otherwise, there are a ton of alternative keyboards on the Market (some with free trials), one of them must satisfy your needs.
There are acouple paid apps on the market that emulate the iPhone keyboard while throwing in their own predictive AI. The apps that come to my mind are "Better Keyboard", "Smart Keyboard PRO", and "SwiftKey Keyboard".
All of the above are paid apps and should suit your style more than the stock android keyboard, HTC keyboard or the physical keyboard. I understand what you mean about the apple keyboard though, I found I had WAY less mistakes typing on my ex-gf's iPhone 3G than on my HTC keyboard on my old Hero, even after calibration. Swype does take alittle getting used to, I would have to admit as well.
For me, the physical keyboard beats out anything out there. I don't think i'll ever get another phone without a physical keyboard anymore!
smart keyboard its paid though, like 2 dollars? it has an iphone theme on it and looks just like it
If you want an iPhone keyboard you need to download "Better Keyboard 8" and download the skin "iPhone Better Keyboard Skin" For It. It won't be free unless you download "Applanet Market". But the skin should be. Good luck finding another method other than this one!

I like Jonasl's modded HTC keyboard. It's basically the HTC keyboard with every additional option and feature you can possibly think of. There's even an online kitchen for you to customize every color, font, and symbol of the keys if you want to make your own, custom themed one. Btw, it says 2.2/Froyo but it works perfectly on Gingerbread.

FlexT9
was free on amazon the other day. I like it over swiftkey because it isn't as intrusive. Lot of flexibility and easy to use. speech to text works VERY well.
I'm gonna go with my personal preference (not best) Swype
Personally, I really like Better Keyboard. I've been using it for the past couple of years and it's never caused any problems. There are a bunch of skins out there for it, but the thing I especially like is you can change the height of the keys. I tend to make the keys around 80% of normal height so I can maximize the viewable screen size.
Just wondering what you guys think is the best keyboard.

I prefer Swype
HTC_IME Mod, it has the great HTC sense keyboard with some great tweak built in and is available free in these forums.
The Market version of Gingerbread. Largest keys and best layout imo. Closest thing you can get to the Iphone's which has always worked best for me.
The physical keyboard
cause the digital one is a security risk:
http://www.engadget.com/2011/07/15/eafts-magictile-marathon-tablet-gets-priced-opens-up-the-flood/
Though personally I'm fine with any keyboard..I was never abe to take advantage of the "swiping" in swype or the suggestions..I just type out everything manually on the screen anyways :/
Swype, but I wish they would allow to uninstall it and get full version with support for more languages.
I use Smart Keyboard Pro because I have this t9 addiction... <_< hahaha

I use hardware 95% of the time. I like the fact I can slide out the keyboard and it doesn't take up more than half of my screen.
I am also curious when they are going to make a tablet with a slideout keyboard.

Miniature bluetooth keyboards eliminate the necessity. Otherwise it's just a netbook.
I can't believe no one has mentioned SwifKeyX! It is the best keyboard at predicting text.
Swype all day unless I have to type in sometimes email or something that consists of numbers and letters together, then I use the physical keyboard.
Posted by some phone named the Epic.
Gingerbread (from the market as well) for this guy. Easy to use. I do wish there was a way to have that keyboard but have swype enabled for it. I think that would be the best of both worlds!
Hi guys,
So if you've used the Stock Samsung Keyboard, I'm guessing you have worked out it's even worse than the iOS keyboard, actually no it's not that bad, but still. It's missing key features and for some reason on each reboot of the phone it seems to forget words I've told it to remember. Coming from a One X, this keyboard is extremely hard to adopt, as the Sense keyboard is absolutely beautiful.
Does anyone know any good, free, alternative keyboards that I could use, maybe even a Sense keyboard? To date I have used the following keyboards, and hate them!:
AOSP Gingerbread
AOSP Ice Cream Sandwich
GO Keyboard (HATED THIS!!)
I can't think of any alternative, however if you guys take the time to make some suggestions I would really really appreciate it! I don't mind installing applications that aren't in the Play Store, I just reeaaaaaly want something better than this!
Thanks guys, you da bomb
I use Ice Cream Sandwich Keyboard by johntanmi
I used to use Smart Keyboard PRO when I was on my GS2 with Gingerbread.
I actually found the Sense keyboard very hard to use and have always been a fan of the iOS keyboard. I really wish there was a ripoff for it for Android that came close. I can use an iOS keyboard on a 3.5" screen as well as I use the ICS keyboard on my 4.8" GS3 screen.
I highly recommend SwiftKey X. It's excellent.
There is a free version of SwiftKeyX, though I would honestly suggest buying it, and eventually Swiftkey3 when it comes out of beta. I don't have an S3 (yet), so I don't know the compatibility it'll have with the phone, but unless you're looking for something similar to Swype, Swiftkey is the way to go.

Or even better, the SwiftKey 3 beta.
Was using ics keyboard donation version for a while but siwftkey keyboard blows it out of the water.
《tapatalked from galaxy s3》
I'm also a +1 for Swiftkey 3 beta (using it now on my Galaxy Nexus)
here's the link (download at bottom of the page):
http://www.swiftkey.net/swiftkey-3-beta-smart-space-ui-themes
I've used SwiftkeyX before (and personally wasnt a huge fan), but I find the changes in Swiftkey 3 have been amazing so far. Especially the new themes, Swiftkey 3 makes the whole thing look much more professional.
Tinker around with the Swiftkey3 settings (I like setting the spacebar action to complete the current word)
I only have a few issues (which im sure they'll work out in the future) - such as their voice input (its not like ICS keyboard where it will dynamically populate your words as you speak , but instead will LIST out options of what it thinks you said)
anyways - Swiftkey3 ! DO IT
I have tried over 10 different keyboards and I keep coming back to Swiftkey. The auto-correction and prediction algorithm is second-to-none. It also handles up to 3 languages simultaneously, so it makes it simple to type in multiple languages (in my case, English and Portuguese). The beta also looks very promising, so it will keep getting better.
Thanks for the replies guys! I'm going to try SwiftKey X and SwiftKey 3, means a lot to me the replies I have had. Support on this seems to be buzzing a hella lot more than over on the One X forums
+ 1000 with SwiftKey... it's just the best! You won't be disappointed of wasting some bucks on it!

What i really love about Swiftkey X is that this keyboard learns my "typing habits" from my SMS, gmail, facebook or twitter. The text prediction become almost perfect.
On the GS3 (coming from a HTC Desire), i tried the samsung keyboard, and installed Swiftkey again after 5 minutes of hating this stock keyboard.
Yeah, I must recommend SwiftKey also, the beta is amazing, I type almost as fast as I do on my desktop... Sometimes it feels impossible to mistype lol. It reads my mind :s

I've tried just about everything but I keep coming back to FlexT9. I wish I didn't as it's uglier than everything else IMO, but in terms of functionality and usability I can't find anything that beats it.
You might try out Thumb Keyboard. I wrote this especially for devices with large screens. Besides a standard layout it has split layouts for landscape and portrait. Although I'm pretty objective when it comes to keyboards, I still find myself typing the most fast on this one.
