Cell Standby - Fascinate General

Not sure if it's just me or not but has anyone noticed a cell standby issue too? My phone gets up to around 20% while I sleep which is weird because in my room I have four bars... so is it my device or does anyone else havt the same issue?

I did notice this myself. I would go to sleep with 95% and wake up with 70%.
So went to Settings/Accounts and Services/ and turned off Background Data.
Went to sleep last night with 97% and woke up this mornin' (nah na na nuh) with 94%. The gmail app seems to hammer the data. And I have found no scheduling within that app. Stock app has scheduling gonna try that and report back.
btw: with background data off and you go to the market it wants it on so I'll turn it on and back off after.
good day.

My cell standby floats around 11% at all times.
I find this to be acceptable.
My battery life has been satisfactory.

As long as this means my gmail/text/gtalk works automatically, I figure I may as well leave this off.
I don't use any syncing apps like Facebook, our anything like that.

I should have thought of this before. Turning off now, we'll see what happens. Also does anyone else notice flaky 3g connection mine is weird, a lot of the time my 3g bar just says 3g with a d under it instead of arrows and my signal fluxuates quite frequently verdict for you guys?

Ah, screw this.
Market doesn't work without it turned on and neither does the Yahoo Mail app.
That wouldn't be such a big deal if I wasn't bothered by Yahoo with a notification tray icon telling me to turn it on.

Use Gmail?

I use both and can't justify getting rid of my Yahoo just yet.

The d under the 3g bar is like a 3g "idle" icon if u will. But i have had a lot of issues with service and 3g. I rarely get above 2 bars and if i do its only for a short while. I lose 3g more often than i would like and get the dreaded 1x though it usually switches right back. I absolutely love this phone but the constantly having weak signal is killing my experience. Am i the only one struggling for service?

Nope, same here. Just left the Verizon store for the second time for this issue & connection errors with the Samsung email app. Their fix for this? "No one's having these problems that we know of. Let's try another PRL list."

I've encountered problems with the stock e-mail app on several Android phones.
There's seemly no answer to why it works and then doesn't work.
You'll find numerous threads suggesting you use K9, or some other 3rd party e-mail application for many POP3 e-mail addresses.
My main e-mail is a GMail, so that's a convenience for me.
I also use a Yahoo and before the Yahoo Mail app from the Market, I would also have trouble with the Android e-mail application from time to time.

According to the battery monitor, Cell standby is using a lot of my battery. Seems like this started happening more once I flashed the voodoo kernel and overclocked to 1.2 GHz, and put the "kickstand" case on my phone. I'm going to run fora few more days and see if it's consistently bad, and if so, I'll try taking the case off first to see if it gets better.
For instance this morning it says Cell standby has used 33% of my battery, it's been on for 11 hours, and I haven't charged in about 6 hours. I've dropped to 62% battery capacity, with the screen mostly off and not using the phone in those 6 hours. It says my time without a signal is 23%, I've seen it as high as 40%... I don't get very good signal in my apartment, but this seems wayyyy worse than it should be. I did a *228 update yesterday but that doesn't seem to have helped.

thanks, was wondering why battery drop 20% even when i set to airplane mode before bed.

Still have 100% Awake after Sprint MR? Report in!

I know I'm not alone with this and I think it's getting ignored because most people don't have the problem.
Even after the MR, I'm still having 100% Awake problems.
Yesterday I did the following.
1. Flashed back to stock rom.
2. Allowed the phone to perform the OTA MR update
3. Updated PRL and Profile.
4. Rooted phone using asroot2 process.
5. Installed Optimized/Zipaligned Apps found in this forum.
I then installed a random selection of my preferred apps. I did not log into any of the social networks on the phone itself. Facebook, Twidroid, Peep, Seemic are all on the phone but either not logged into or not set to update automatically. GPS is on, bt and wifi are not.
The only widgets I'm running is the normal clock/weather, big calendar, music player, and gps/wifi/bt toggles. Everything else is shortcuts and such. I'm using Gmail app for my mail, the stock messaging app for sms, and the stock browser. I'm syncing with Google for mail, contacts, and calendar. I have no other email accounts set up.
This was the 3rd time going through this process. The phone lasts roughly 24 hours with great low awake times, then suddenly starts climbing. A reboot will of course reset it so it shows 100% awake.
Things I've tried.
Installed Spare Parts and sorted by all sorts of things. Android System seems to be the biggest offender. Real vague.
Installed the Terminal app and tried to run top. Nothing seems to be taking up an abnormal amount of CPU but I don't know how accurate this thing is.
Obviously I've tried this 3 times and attempted to keep all widgets and other things that constantly update away from use but it doesn't stop.
I have shied away from task killers seeing how that's the normal reaction in this forum, that they're bad and I'm not sure they are a good idea.
My buddy has the exact same phone, way more widgets and things running, and his has been running for days without ever going over 25% Awake. We've went through all of our setting and installed apps and widgets etc, and cannot find a good reason for this.
I'm hoping to get some recognition for the problem. Maybe if others have the problem, we can try to see if we can come up with a fix.
Suggestions
Check the apps you have installed, some of the ones i liked say they 'keep the phone from sleeping' during installing. Just because you aren't running an app doesn't mean it's not running in the background. I would suggest you uninstall ALL external apps and test your phone for 24 hours after a full charge and see if that is the problem.
Another problem i had was i never gave my battery the proper charge when i bought the phone. I got much better performance from my batter by running it down to where it would not turn on then completely charged it without interruption. I repeated this 3 times in a row and my battery lasts much longer now.
I would also suggest to flash your phone with the fresh ROM .6b After doing this my phone was amazingly fast and excellent sleep times.
Currently Pulled Status:
After 48:15:00 Up Time Only Awake Time 13:01:00 (27%)
I'm aware of that app thing but I will say that I haven't installed any apps to speak of today. The only thing I installed today was a widget for turning the ringer off but I uninstalled that. Of course, that *could* be the problem.
Other than that, I haven't installed any apps today so you'd think that anything that would cause 100% Awake would have happened yesterday as well. Granted, that's an assumption and something best proven so tonight I will flash to stock + the OTA MR and leave it alone. We'll see if the phone with zero apps installed in basically stock form flips to 100% awake tomorrow or not.
I tried Fresh yesterday and it made no difference. Granted, I put it on top of a phone that already was at 100% Awake but still. I also don't care for what's installed/removed on the rom either. I would love to have my stock rom + rooted + removed apps + optimized apps and call it a day. I can hope right?
I was having the same problem as you...
I did a factory data reset after I applied the MR.
Then rooted
Then installed fresh .6
my phone has been sleeping like a baby ever since (over 1 week now).
Hope that helps...

I tried Fresh .6b but it didn't help. Granted, I applied it after the 100% awake problem hit. I don't really care for Fresh though.. but I might try it after I do a few experiments.
Bah.. I gave up on the experiment idea and went ahead and did this.
Flashed to stock
OTA MR upgrade
Rooted
Flashed Fresh .06 ROM
Flashed Optimized/Zipaligned apps
Only apps installed are Seesmic, SMS Backup & Restore, and Call Logs Backup & Restore.
I will leave it at that for now. It will get a full charge tonight and hopefully I'll see more than a 24 hour run of good idle time.
I can say that sms problem is also persists.
And i found out that i have SMS problem only when there is 0 in incoming number. If sender have number without ZERO - it works just fine.
Nice fix from sprint -) I think they do not test it at all

Could be a total coincidence but I was texting someone with a zero in their number when my awake time started climbing. But I had also been texting all morning with another person with a zero in their number and it waited until around 3:30 to start acting up.

make sure you look for the following
settings>applications>deveolopment
(uncheck stay awake)
if this is checked, your phone WILL NOT SLEEP when plugged in.
to avoid any silliness make you check the awake time when it is NOT plugged in.
...Just sayin

I understood your message, but i STILL have SMS problem on 2 HERO after MR update. Thats a pitty
Well folks, I thought I had the problem licked but last night it came back. On Monday morning, I did the following:
1) RUU back to stock
2) applied voice mail and MR update
3) rooted phone and applied optimized apk & clear screen mod
It was working so well until last night when I was playing with the wireless and wired tether apps. After I *uninstalled* those apps, the phone would not go back to sleep. I'm getting sick of this but will not be resetting my phone. Hopefully an update will come out soon to resolve this.
Yesterday I decided I didn't care for the Fresh .6 rom and went back to my experiment idea.
I flashed the stock RUU back onto it, let it do the OTA update for the firmware, and then installed only Handcent and Seesmic to keep from using the stock SMS/twitter clients just in case.
I signed into Google for my Gmail, contacts, and calendar and left all the update settings alone. I turned on GPS satellites, and I signed into the Facebook integration on the phone so I could get the photos/bdays/status updates in People.
That's all I did. No rooting, no additions, nothing. I removed all widgets except for the clock/weather and the big calendar. Everything else was deleted, I only have the 6 shortcuts on the first home screen.
I went to bed with between 1:15-1:30 awake time. I woke to 4:45 wake time and climbing. Sometime around 5am it stopped being idle and is now climbing steadily toward 100% awake time. Obviously I wasn't using the phone, I received no phone calls or text messages, and it was charging.
This is frustrating.

Yes I ignored it because it did not pertain to the issue at hand. If you had read my entire post, you would see that it had, on all previous times, went from idle to 100% awake while off the charger. Last night was the first time it ever went awake in the middle of the night and it only happened 3 hours before I woke up meaning that it had been on the charger for 5 hours previous without being awake.
Also, that option isn't even checked by default. The only way it would be checked is if you were too stupid to read the text next to it. Needless to say, mine is not checked.
So no, never once in the time of having his phone has that setting been turned on. This issue is not related to your post in the least.

well just for ****s and grins.... retest with it not being plugged in. just to rule out even the remote possibility of that being the issue.
EDIT: also if you are really hard set on figureing out what is causeing it do a stock RUU, then update it.... then don't touch it... at all, no market apps, no enableing anything.... then test
if good, then add a variable.... use scientific method of figureing out what is wrong. Don't just test with a random set of variables and hoping someone might guess at what might be the issue.
from the information you gave.... my money is on the charger causeing it. I may be just totally wrong, but my track record is being right most of the time with this type of troubleshooting.... but if you want a second opinoin... by all means... and a tip of the hat to you sir

I'd say you're wrong because I'm not experiencing the issue at all.
Since the OP's phone and my own are similarly modded, I'm thinking that it has something to do with his own personal info (contacts, calendar, etc.)... because I have NO issues.
I use HTC Peep to update/view Twitter.
I use Handcent for SMS/MMS.
In contrast to the OP's phone, my phone has a ton of stuff installed (25 free apps from the Market, last I checked)... yet my awake times are consistently <30%.

Except, again.. of the 4 times I've reloaded this and had the 100% awake time, only once has it happened on the charger. So I find that theory a bit weak. I suppose it could be, but still.. seems a bit odd that, for instance, it would wait until 3:30 in the afternoon (7 + hours after coming off the charger) to act up.
I'm currently stock + 2 apps which should eliminate the supposed leak with the SMS that some people still claim is happening. But I will flash the stock RUU and then the OTA MR and leave it alone. I'm still going to use the functions of the phone though. I see no reason why syncing with Google or facebook or using peep should matter since those are on the phone from the get-go and intended to be used. I'm sure everyone on here who has no problems at all has a lot more things turned on than I do right now.
For instance, X99Percent and I have compared settings. He has WAY more widgets running, WAY more programs installed, and is signed into all the social networks. Yet he can use his phone for days with normal idle time. I might make it 24 hours, or in the case of yesterday, about 14 hours, before going to 100% awake.
I'm convinced it has a lot more to do with something wrong with the phone itself or a software bug than anything else. And if you notice, I'm not alone in this problem, there's others complaining about it on here and on PPCGeeks.

EVO 4G continously downloading Facebook photos - possibly from Friendstream

So my wife and I both have Sprint's latest EVO 4G, and like many other people, we are experiencing battery issues.
I set my phone to use my WiFi network at home, and on my router administration, I can see every HTTP request that is made. What I am seeing is that there are continuous requests for Facebook profile photos, and it requests the same file repeatedly anywhere between 10 to 60 times in a row.
I'm sure this is what's draining the battery very quickly. I even have our phones to sync anywhere between every 2 hours to every 8 hours, but it's still doing it.
I read around and saw that some people are removing the Friendstream widget, so I gave that a try, but that didn't seem to help.
Next step, I turned off Sync Contacts for Facebook for HTC Sense, and sure enough, the requests have stopped.
I will have to test this out a little bit longer to confirm that this is indeed the cause, but so far, I think that's a big culprit to our short battery lives.
Can anyone confirm that they have experienced the same?
I've put up a screen-shot as well:
http://www.makotosan.com/files/Facebook-HTTP-requests.png
I noticed that my EVO was doing something similar when logcatting (and I don't use the Sense Launcher or widgets). Will definitely do a battery test w/ contact sync on/off to see how it effects things when I get a chance. I average about 6%/hr battery drain currently...
Just realized that I forgot to update the subject line. I originally thought it was Friendstream while writing this post, but have determined that it's not.
I started a seperate thread about how the 'People" widget was really causing battery drains on my Evo. ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=6898378 ) I used it for my quick contacts, but I always noticed that it would update the pictures from facebook/have status messages updated..
So I betcha it's the people widget..
-mark
I read your post on this and decided to give it a try and remove the people widget, but that didn't stop the continuous HTTP connection that the phone had open.
I was able to finally narrow it down to the Facebook contacts sync.
My wife was driving around town for just a couple of hours the other day and her phone had died after a fresh charge within that time.
The other day, she went to the doctor's and was playing on the phone for about an hour to pass the time. Along with her normal use of the phone, it made it to 38% by the end of the day. This is after I had turned of the Facebook contacts sync.
I think the developers of the Facebook book need to investigate this issue.
I set facebook to only update once a day, and disabled the live feed sync. I like the contact sync; it's useful for new numbers, birthdays and caller id pictures.
yes, i have the same problem too, had to disable it kuz i would have to kill the "people" process too
I have over 300 of my phone's contacts synced to facebook.. and my battery would drop half way in a matter of an hour..
ive posted about this numerous times in the data usage thread, being that this had costed me about 13 gigs (being all the links to facebook)
It happened to me too. It was causing reboots and killed my battery from a full charge to 10% in less than 4 hours while just sitting there. It also made my awake time and up time exactly the same. I identified this problem by looking at my processes in os monitor. The people process was at 30% cpu constantly. It was actually making my device hot to the touch.
You don't need to remove the people widget, just turn off auto facebook contacts syncing like the op said. Now I just manually update my contacts every once in a while.
I tried this and have definately noticed an increase in battery life. To me the contact syncing is pretty much useless except for the the contact pictures so this isn't much of a trade off. Would definately rather have the extra battery life. I don't have 300+ contacts syncing with facebook so it's not as huge as some, but it *is* a noticeable difference.
Yes! This is all but confirmed in a few threads on androidforums and now here. It seems to be some kind of glitch in the contact syncing. Basically turn off the automatic syncing and maybe do a manual sync once in a while to pull new contact photos, etc.

Google Voice and Nexus S

I've used Google Voice with my Mytouch 4G and battery consumption was alright...i've checked usage today with my Nexus S and it shows Google Voice as 24%! Almost more than my display (25%). Anyone else experience this?
pretty sure gvoice has a refresh interval setting
My battery has been going for 20 hours + and here is the breakdown of my batter use (for some reason my google voice isn't even listed, and I used it a bunch of times today to text). I'm using the stock Nexus S google voice... haven't updated.
Display 29%
Cell Standby 26% (I'm at work, getting very spotty reception in the building.. same with verizon)
Android System 13%
Wi-Fi 9% (Wi-fi is connected all day at work and home)
Angry Birds 5%
Microbes Live Wallpaper 4%
Android OS 4%
Phone Idle 3%
Browser 3%
Market 2%
Dialer 2%
battery is at 26% still after 20+ hours

Not really a refresh interval setting. I'm looking at it right now, in the settings you can "synchronize inbox" or not. I think when you don't synchronize, you only get stuff with a manual refresh...no intervals like in a lot of apps.
I've not had Google Voice show up in my battery status yet.

I had this happen to me also. It was showing Google Voice was keeping the phone awake and was the largest % of everything running on my phone. I uninstalled and reinstalled GV and so far it has not come back. But it has only been a day and a half. So we will see. I posted in the GV app support forum on Google asking them to fix it also.
i can't uninstall google voice on the S. Only the updates. i never use it for calls. i receive sms on it throughout the day (less than 20) but that's it. There really is no interval settings every since its all push now. Using it the same way i am on the MT4G.
I'm going to uninstall updates and retry.

Set GV to "do not use GV to make any calls". You should be fine then.
Yeah, I just checked again on mine. 9 hours 45 mins uptime, GV was 3% of battery use. The fine details show 29 mins of keep awake. Not really bad, but I certainly wasn't in the app that long, I wonder why it needed to keep the phone awake that long.
Not really an issue on my phone, in my opinion, with that kind of usage. I'll have to look at my other Android and see if it has similar behavior.
I uninstalled updates and reinstalled them. I did a wipe of my phone this morning just for the heck of it and it seems fine now. The dialer though is now spiking at 17% . Hmmmmm

Solution for craptastic battery life...

Now I'm serious... You know how switching to 1x (or EDGE) often doubles, sometimes, triples battery life?
On my phone, the HTC Incredible, toggling between 3G and 1x is painful, it requires a whole restart and messing with cryptic network settings. It gets old fast.
I like 3G, duh lol. You know how setCPU can throttle the CPU down when the screen is off? Why isn't there an app or a setting or anything, in fact, I've never even seen it mentioned... I know you could also turn off always on data, but then, you don't always have data!
So, why isn't there an app or a setting that, when the phone is in standby, it switches down to 1x for much better battery, I mean, why on earth would 3G need to be on when your phone is sleeping? Unless you tether
But not just for standby, but also for the phone to only switch to 3G for things like downloads, web browsing, and email, facebook, etc.
Sure, maybe not doubled battery life, but when I'm in school, I put my phone in my pocket and don't even touch it for at least another 6 hours. If its 15 90% when it goes in my pocket, it's gonna be at around 83-77% by the time I get on the bus! The biggest usage of the battery: Cell Standby!
So, if there's any good developers out there, here's a best-idea for an app since SetCPU!
So you want an app to turn 3g to 1x? There are like 20 million.

I dunno, how about G-mails, work e-mails, Twitter updates, Facebook updates, Market updates, radio/music streaming, etc.
Background 3g is pretty much essential for me

Why do you need 3G for that? You don't really need the speed when the screen is off lol, they'll still download, just on 1x. And when the screen goes on, it should switch 3G back on.
The problem is that 3g uses twice the battery of 1x and when 1x is download updates it makes twice as long... Thus same battery consumption
Why not use one of the 2g/3g toggle widgets from the market?

THe market does not work on 1X, pretty sure pandora would sound like s*** on 1x. I turn 3g off during school since I barley use it. My rom has the toggle in the notification drop down.
Incredibly Re-Engineered 3.0 all the way!

Worked for me on 1x, painful, but lol

EMail app at 100% CPU load

I had a problem with the stock EMail app.
It stuck at 100% CPU load, the phones back was hot and the battery lost ~70% in half an hour.
I can't understand how this could happen, the app is set to check both my EMail accounts every hour and there has been nothing out of the ordinary (no big attachements or so on).
Anyone else had this problem? Any solutions? Should I use a 3rd party app for EMails?
the same problem

It happened to me three days ago Using OS Monitor, I only showed 34% usage, but this time, Android System Monitor acknowledged 100% usage, but was unable to account for where it was being used. where did you see it stucks at 100 % , it sometimes shows wrong , ;
you can also check ur email mobile or 3rd party app or reboot ur device you can also fallow these steps , maybe it helps you.
go into "Settings...Voice input and output", and, if the Eyes Free TTS engine available, the default TTS is not set and check the box to have the native TTS as the default, and checked the box for "Always use my settings".
I saw it in the Samsung Task Manager. I think it showed correct because also the phone's back became very hot.
But, fortunately, this never happened again until now. The battery life is terrible after all, but the EMail app seems to be fine
I have a similar problem if I'm not using the standard Samsung keyboard.
It's a bit of a pain in the arse as I have to remember to swap keyboards if I decide I need to reply to something. If I forget the phone locks up and the battery drains very quickly.
I've seen other posts with same problem. Wouldn't be so awkward if the standard keyboard wasn't so useless.
I binned the stock samsung email app, and use the 2.3.4 vanilla email app
I'm having major problems with the Mail app too - consistently high CPU usage, short battery life, back of phone warm to touch and Mail showing as the top battery hog (& CPU hog in Watchdog). Not impressed!
High CPU usage and email app gets stuck
I have the same issue. When I am in the email app it just gets stuck. This is crazy. I switched out from a HTC EVO 4g to Samsung Galaxy so I could have more ROM. I hope I don't regret it. Tell me if you find a solution.
I had the same issue on my SGS II and now my Note. I finally figured out it started after I installed Viber. I uninstalled Viber and the issue went away.
Does anyone else with this issue have Viber installed?
I had this problem only once yesterday - picked up my phone to answer a call and it was very hot. I can't think it was a co-incidence that earlier that day I had enabled Contacts sync with Exchange. Whatever the issue was it has gone away by itself. The only other factor worth mentioning is I was in a supermarket with Free WiFi - but it only works after you click through their homepage. Previously I seen this cause background apps using data to constantly stall due to the HTTP redirect they encounter.
